[Bug 392815] [NEW] Ubuntu Thunderbird's Contact List crash in Romanian
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: thunderbird Hello, I am running Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 + all online updates. I am running Thunderbird for email (stock package). When system is set to Romanian language (via the graphical utility in the System menu), Thunderbird's interaface will become Romanian, too. In this situation, Thunderbird's Contact List won't allow inserting new contacts (vCards); the error message, written in red, is: Behaviour becomes normal if system is set back to English. That seems somewhat logical, since no official Thunderbird 2.x exists for Romanian language yet. It is not very clear for me where the present localization of Ubuntu's Thunderbird comes from (if there is no upstream Romanian Thunderbird 2.x, localization is done at Ubuntu packaging level ?!) Steps to reproduce: 1. Install stock Ubuntu 9.04, including Thunderbird 2. Put system's interface in Romanian (via the System menu standard utility) 3. Open Thunderbird's Contact List and try to insert a new contact - one will get the above error message 4. Put system's interface in English 5. Open Thunderbird's Contact List and try to insert a new contact - it will perform normally Suggestions for solving: 1. Until Thunderbird 3.x is not available in Ubuntu, setting system's interface in Romanian would let Thunderbird's interface in English. Thunderbird 3.x WILL include Romanian localization (upstream); actually, the current Thunderbird 3.x beta works great in Fedora. OR 2. Already include Thunderbird 3.x beta in Ubuntu, via online updates. Observations: I didn't verify it, but I'll bet the described situation affects ALL languages that have no official Thunderbird 2.x AND use a non-US set of characters. I also had the problem that Lightning, even if it installed succesfully (from https://addons.mozilla.org/ro/thunderbird/), won't allow me to import any calendar (.ics file): the Import Calendar button was grayed out. The solution we empirically found was: - uninstall Lightning - sudo apt-get install libstdc++5 - reinstall Lightning Regards, Răzvan -- [Thunderbird] Cannot use Contact List https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378265 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 378265] [NEW] [Thunderbird] Cannot use Contact List
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird Hello, I'm using stock Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 in Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope (plus all online updates as of May 18, 2009). I've installed the following Thunderbird Extensions, directly from the Thunderbird repository: ImportExportTools and MoreFunctionsforAB. I am using Romanian language; Thunderbird is set to send e-mail in UTF-8 by default (Preferences -> Display -> Fonts -> both drop-down lists). Thunderbird performs normally (send/receive) but there are a few quirks: - I cannot set/create the vCard file attached to messages as signature (Account Settings): pressing "Edit Card" button shows nothing; - I can neither insert new contacts in Personal Address Book, nor edit old/imported ones. Creating a new address book leads to nothing (I am able to create it, but I cannot insert contacts); - sometimes I get "Bad header" returns from my mailserver (which runs amavisd-new on Fedora); it seems it doesn't like the way read receipts are encoded. I suspect an encoding issue here. Running the same version of Thunderbird, with same extensions and same setup in Fedora 10/11 or Windows works OK. FYI, the main characters specific to Romanian language are (Unicode UTF-8): 0218, 0219, 021A, 021B. „Terminal” font is usually used on Romanian-configured systems, for both X11 and console. The described facts are the same even if I totally uninstall the extensions. [Bug 392815] Re: Ubuntu Thunderbird's Contact List crash in Romanian
Hello, I may bet that this bug and the bug 494865 at Mozilla Thunderbird, even if they are not the same, have the same cause: the absence of Romanian locale for Thunderbird 2.x. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=494865 It is not very clear for me: 1. why, on an Ubuntu system, Thunderbird's 2.x interface is put in Romanian if the system, as a whole, is set to Romanian IF no official Romanian Thunderbird 2.x exists (IMHO, this is a bad packaging choice); 2. where the Romanian localization for Thunderbird 2.x comes from (since there is no OFFICIAL Romanian Thunderbird 2.x, this localization would been inserted in Ubuntu, somewhere at packaging level...) IMHO, adopting Thunderbird 3.x beta would be the best solution (works great in Fedora, BTW). [Bug 566967] [NEW] Gnome windows have no buttons (close, minimize, maximize) after upgrade to Lucid Lynx beta 2
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I've upgraded from a stock Ubuntu 9.10 desktop to Ubuntu 10.04 beta 2, via "sudo do-upgrade-release -d". After upgrade, there are no buttons atop of windows in Gnome (close, maximize, restore) - neither left, nor right. The bug is very annoying, since windows cannot be minimised, maximised, closed, etc. This occurs only if I choose "Gnome" session at log in; "Gnome-minimal" settings are unaffected. This occured to me on two separate machines; on one of them I've solved it using this: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/ubuntu-desktop-effects- fixing-the-missing-titlebar/ On the other, there is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file present; creating one and adding the suggested lines leads to to visible effect. Yes, gnome-keyring-daemon asks for the keyring password - I've entered my user password - then gwibber works as expected. [Bug 480026] [NEW] [KARMIC] [RO] Cannot use Romanian accented characters after last update
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kbd-chooser Hello, I am using a stock installation of Ubuntu Karmic, installed in Romanian from scratch. The keyboard is the default Romanian keyboard, which produces Romanian accented characters by pressing Alt-Right + one of s,t,q,a,i,e,d,[,]. After last updates (that arrived online today, November 10), I cannot produce those accented characters - default characters are produced when pressing the above keys. In fact, it seems it was only a *superposition* of control keys: producing diacritics for Romanian language using a standard US keyboard requires pressing AltGr (right Alt) + where is one of i, t,s,c,[,],a,q,l,d,e. If these combinations of keys accidentally have other meanings in Thunderbird, Unity or the Gnome interface, they bring trouble, because they open various menus, close windows, etc. This is not the case now, anymore; it certainly WAS the case at the time when the bug was reported, with that specific version of Ubuntu, GUI (Unity, I think) and Thunderbird. [Bug 1092229] [NEW] Desktop brightness minimal after upgrade 12.04 -> 12.10 on Acer Aspire One D270
Public bug reported: Hello, On Acer Aspire One D270 netbook (please see full hardware configuration here http://h-node.org/notebooks/view/en/536/Aspire-One-D270-- ZE7-/1/1/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef/D270), desktop brightness is reduced to minimum after upgrading from 12.04 to 12.10. Netbook's video card is this: http://h-node.org/videocards/view/en/538 /Intel-Corporation-Cedarview-Integrated-Graphics-Controller--rev-09- The function keys for brightness (Fn + horizontal arrows) APPARENTLY work: they DO present a brightness slider when pressed, but brightness is not decreased/increased when sliding left-right. The upgrade was done in an automatic way (via GUI update manager, who offers a new version of Ubuntu). After some Google searches, the fix presented here, comment no. 9 (adding some parameters to the kernel line while booting) applied, solving the problem: http://askubuntu.com/questions/3841/desktop-doesnt- remember-brightness-settings-after-a-reboot This seems to be an old bug, still unsolved. However, the correct video configuration should be automagically detected at boot, WITHOUT manual user intervention and hacking (this may be a serious stop for non-technical users buying an Ubuntu netbook from consumer stores, especially since Acer is pretty popular).
