[Bug 100005] Re: grub: feisty linux-image 2.6.20-13, wrong root device in menu.lst
We can close this bug because unfortunately this is expected behaviour, and it isn't a bug in the kernel or installer. The changes between /dev/hdxx and /dev/sdxx is because the kernel is moving over to libata support for PATA and SATA devices, rather than using the original older IDE infrastructure. When libata is used devices are recognised as /dev/sdxx, rather than /dev/hdxx. The oscillation between /dev/hdxx and /dev/sdxx with the kernel versions is because this has been work in progress, and a lot of work has been performed between -12 and -14, with the result in some cases that the older IDE infrastructure was used for some hardware in -13. Normally, users are insulated from this change because the Feisty installer writes files (grub, /etc/fstab etc.) that use disk labels (UUID) to refer to disks and partitions rather than the /dev entry, and this doesn't change even if the /dev entry does. Unfortunately, by skipping the grub installation and by using /dev entries, you have been exposed to the on-going kernel changes. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Status: Needs Info => Rejected -- grub: feisty linux-image 2.6.20-13, wrong root device in menu.lst https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 53923] Re: tifm: Texas Instruments Card reader not working
BenC was just pointing out the way kernel bug triaging works. Bugs start out as unconfirmed and unassigned, and that's what we look for when evaluating bugs for work etc. If they're confirmed and not assigned to the kernel team they won't appear in many searches, and will also be assumed to have been already triaged and evaluated by a member of the kernel team, and hence potentially overlooked. No bugs are ignored accidentally or otherwise, bugs may appear to be ignored, but that's normally because there's not enough information to deal with them, no available fixes, or higher priority bugs. [Bug 162802] Re: Crash on boot after Gutsy upgrade. Same with LiveCD.
Booting into the Gusty kernel and getting a picture of the kernel crash is important. Until then we won't know which kernel module caused the kernel to crash. It is important to get the full kernel crash, and this may have scrolled off the top of the screen. You can use Shift-PageUp to scroll backwards in the console output (and Shift-PageDown to scroll forwards again). The output from dmesg, and lsmod on the working Feisty kernel will also be useful, as this will show what working modules are being loaded. On the crashing Gutsy kernel, if you get a shell prompt (you don't mention it, but you should drop into a busybox shell prompt after the modprobe failure), you could try the following commands modprobe ide_generic exit This may allow the system to boot up. If it does then the problem is definately due to the ide driver being loaded at bootup. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Ubuntu Kernel Team (ubuntu-kernel-team) Status: New => Incomplete -- Crash on boot after Gutsy upgrade. [Bug 162478] Re: Regression: File corruption on amd64/nVidia with 2.6.22-14-generic
This could still be a memory issue which is showing up in Gusty, but not in Feisty or memtest86+. However, it could also be a kernel module randomly corrupting pagecache kernel memory. Both of these will cause the issues you mention. Incidently, the issue that it only occurs with file writing rather than reading is a red-herring and is caused by file caching behaviour in Linux. When Linux reads and writes a file the data is cached in memory (page cache) for later reuse. If you read a file for the first time (i.e. it is not already in the cache), there is no opportunity for the data to become corrupted before it is read by the program, with writing the data isn't immediately written to disk, but kept in the cache for sometime where is being randomly corrupted before being flushed to disk. These issues are extremely hard to track down. If it is a kernel module corrupting memory, the first thing is to determine if you have any different modules loaded running on Gutsy than you have running Feisty. If so, one of the additional/different modules may be the culprit. Please attach the output you attached previously (dmesg, /proc/modules) for the Feisty kernel. Also it would be helpful if you're aware of any differences between hardware recognition in Feisty/Gutsy yourself. ** Changed in: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22 (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Ubuntu Kernel Team (ubuntu-kernel-team) Status: New => Incomplete -- Regression: File corruption on amd64/nVidia with 2.6.22-14-generic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162478 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 53923] Re: tifm: Texas Instruments Card reader not working
A test kernel with the new fixed tifm driver is available from http://people.ubuntu.com/~pkl/linux- image-2.6.20-16-generic_2.6.20-16.28_i386.deb This has the fixed 0.8d tifm driver. The previously mentioned ways to get this driver to compile (commenting out code), produces a driver with extremely low default values for queue sizes. The driver in the previously mentioned build has (hopefully) correct values which will make it perform much better. However, I need someone with TI MMC hardware to check that it works correctly. Please test. Once I know the driver works, it can be put in the next SRU upload of the Feisty kernel. Please let me know if anyone wants an x86-64 built kernel. If anyone needs to know, the package can be installed by sudo dpkg --install linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic_2.6.20-16.28_i386.deb and removed by sudo dpkg --purge linux-image-2.6.20-16-generic Thanks. -- tifm: Texas Instruments Card reader not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/53923 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The reversion from libata for PATA to the older IDE drivers was done to fix a large number of bugs people were experiencing with the feisty final kernel. Happily it has fixed a number of problems, and many systems are now correctly working for the first time. Unhappily, the bad behaviour that other people are experiencing with the reversion wasn't intended. A wholesale re-reversion of the libata isn't an option because this will cause devices to change again for everyone, and everyone will be quite understandably upset. The ideal solution to this is to selectively re-revert to libata for the people experiencing these problems. Unfortunately, this takes time to work out exactly what hardware isn't working and to only revert that. Please continue sending bug reports. [Bug 106548] Re: changed /dev/hda1 to /dev/sda1 without user interaction
This is expected. We have moved over to using libata in the kernel. This is a new subsystem for driving SATA and PATA hard-drives. The major user visible difference is devices change from /dev/hdX to /dev/sdX because libata uses the SCSI subsystem. For the majority of users the change should happen without causing any problems. Apart from the device name changes, are you experiencing any other issues such as problems recognising drives, or read/write errors when accessing drives? This is unclear from your bug report. If you're not experiencing any other issues, then please respond accordingly, as this bug can then be closed. [Bug 107180] Re: Segmentation Fault
The kernel mem subsystem and glibc are extremely well tested, it is highly unlikely these are the cause of the problems. User level app bugs are by far the most likely explanation. If hlp and hlp2 point to the same memory, they should behave the same when accessed. Unfortunately, the above printf statements do not prove hlp and hlp2 are the same on a 64 bit system. The printfs printf("hlp :%x-\n", hlp); printf("hlp2 :%x-\n", hlp2); are printing the low 4 bytes of the 8 byte pointer values. These should be alterred to use %p, i.e. printf("hlp :%p-\n", hlp); printf("hlp2 :%p-\n", hlp2); Only then can you know that hlp and hlp2 point to the same memory. Secondly, the printf of the hlp2 value should be moved to immediately before it is referenced, in the above code it is possible that IP[255] = 0; is corrupting hlp2 (if, for instance, IP is not 255 bytes long, IP[255] may be addressing a byte within the hlp2 pointer). ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Needs Info -- Segmentation Fault https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107180 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 107286] Re: Loss of data moving files to memory stick
This sounds like you're not unmounting the memory stick before removal. Linux caches file writes in RAM, and so even though the files look to be on the memory stick, they have not yet been written, You must unmount the drive to ensure all pending writes are written to the memory stick. To unmount, right click on the file browser window, and choose "Unmount Volume". ** Changed in: Ubuntu Status: Needs Info => Rejected -- Loss of data moving files to memory stick https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/107286 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 95830] Re: Parallels Desktop for Mac Optical Drive not recognized
In above Dmesg generated using Parallels build 1970, ata_piix driver is correctly recognising and configuring emulated DVD/CDROM drive. Using Parallels build 3186, ata_piix driver is not recognising the emulated DVD/CDROM drive, and it is instead erroring as shown in the previously attached Parallels screendump. So, two separate issues: 1. A change in the hardware emulation by Parallels has broken ata_piix. 2. Previous versions of the kernel (prior to 2.6.20-12) install a driver that correctly recognises the emulated DVD/CDROM driver in the Parallels build 3186. This may be related to changelog comment: "piix: Fix typo that allowed this module to override ata_piix.". -- Parallels Desktop for Mac Optical Drive not recognized https://launchpad.net/bugs/95830 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Yes, lsmod before the hang should be okay. Also have you observed any pattern to the hangs? Does it always occur at roughly the same time after booting?
