[Bug 434245] [NEW] Writer freezes when opening certain files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org Hello, suddenly Writer freezes when opening an .odt file I was working on without problems for a longer time. All other previous versions of this file won't open as well. Other files do still work. When Writer opens the file, it completely uses one of the CPU cores (total CPU load 50%), then the CPU load drops awhile, then Writer freezes and the CPU load stays at 50%. The app won't close and the process has to be forced to shut down. Help is much appreciated as the file is my personal information database. [Bug 434245] Re: Writer freezes when opening certain files
Chris, I tried with OO 2.4.3 under Vista and I could open the file. But I don't want to stay with the older OO version just because of the bug. How can I achieve that this bug is solved? Unfortunately I cannot give away the file in question to allow debugging. [Bug 434245] Re: Writer freezes when opening certain files
I found the reason that OO writer freezes: From a certain version above 3.0 up, writer can no longer handle larger files in web layout. My file (180kB) was stored in web layout mode. I had to open it with OO 2.4.3, switch to print layout and save it to be able to open it with OO 3.0 and above. See also http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=103885 So, my primary problem (writer freezes when opening the file) is solved, but the OO problem remains. ** Bug watch added: OpenOffice.org Issue Tracker #103885 http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=103885 -- Writer freezes when opening certain files https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/434245 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 444633] [NEW] Evolution crashes many times a day
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I can not make out any special action that causes the crashes. I'd say it is mostly when working with tasks and notes. Is there a way I can contribute more information for debugging? Honestly, also when looking at the reports from other users, I cannot understand why software in this state is released. This is the default PIM delivered with major distributions. How do you plan to ever be able to compete with commercial OSs with such applications? It might be heroic that you got so far with people spending their free time on it, but what is it worth when the product still cannot compete with commercial software? It took a lot of my time migrating my PIM data to Linux and it will take even more to get it back. But I cannot see that this software can be used when you have to rely on it for daily work. Pedro, I did my best to record the backtrace as explained. The last times however, evolution froze instead of crashing. The instructions say to "press ctrl+c in gdb" which turned gdb off. What does "in gdb" mean? It runs in a shell, right? So here is what I got. If you know what my mistake was with gdb you might tell me. [Bug 434245] Re: Writer freezes when opening certain files
Chris, I tried as you told. I still have the problem with OO 3.1.1. I also tried OO 3.1.1. under Windows: same thing. What makes me wonder is that not only the current version of the file, the one I was working on, can no longer be opened, but all the older versions of the file too. This seems to indicate that it was not the file that got corrupted but rather OO or the OS. Because the same problem occurs under Ubuntu and Windows I do assume that OO changed in some way that resulted in the problem. Would it not be necessary to install a previous version of OO? How is this being done?
