[Bug 260630] [NEW] Mouse disappears when moved over kstars star chart

2008-08-23 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdeedu

Open KStars and hover the mouse over the main star chart viewing area.
The mouse pointer becomes invisible, so it's impossible to see which
part of the map you are hovering over. This makes it difficult to select
stars and view their properties, for example.

The expected behaviour is that the pointer is *not* invisible. The
pointer *is* visible when hovering over the rest of the UI, just not the
star chart.

When you click-and-drag on the star chart, the pointer becomes visible
again with the "dragging in progress" pointer icon. When you stop
dragging, it disappears again.

kstars 4:4.1.0-0ubuntu5 running on up-to-date Ubuntu Intrepid.

Thanks for your replies. I'm running Ubuntu rather than Kubuntu, and the

changing the KDE cursor theme without having to install lots of KDE

[Bug 272824] Re: Applet has too much horizontal padding

2009-01-28 Thread Phil Bull
Hi Martin,

The updated applet works fine, I haven't noticed any regressions.

The padding is much better, but I'd still argue that another couple of
pixels could be removed from the right-hand side of the applet, just to
avoid the same Fitts Law problems that the Windows 95 Start button had
[1]. In fact, would it be possible to set the applet to raise/light-up
on mouse-over, like the clock applet? This would solve the problem
completely, IMO.

2009-07-01 Thread Phil Bull
Thanks for reporting this. The affected documentation is in the GNOME
user guide, which is being rewritten over the next 2 release cycles. As
such, I'm not sure that it's worth addressing this immediately rather
than waiting for the new docs. What's your opinion, are many users
struggling with this in particular?

Incidentally, is there any chance that the GNOME and Ubuntu docs teams

[Bug 394335] Re: Nautilus "Changing Backgrounds" help is tl; dr and doesn't cross-reference desktop background

2009-07-01 Thread Phil Bull
Hi mpt,

For fear of getting further off-topic, I'll reply in a separate email
regarding the test videos.

Unfortunately for this bug, there is going to be a license change when
the whole guide is rewritten. Certainly, the g-u-g is not fit for
purpose at the moment. I doubt it helps very many users, as I've seen
with my own user testing. So, is it worth fixing this one issue that
happens to have been reported as a bug when there are so many other
issues lying unreported? Or should we just wait until the wholesale
"fixing" of the docs on the arrival of the new guide?

If you have seen a significant number of users struggling with this
particular issue and think that improving this topic will result in a
reasonable improvement to their user experiences, then we should fix the
bug now. Otherwise, we may as well wait.

[Bug 395360] [NEW] Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide

2009-07-03 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug reported:

A new installation guide is planned for the Karmic release (see spec
:karmic-installation-guide). This guide will be suitable for non-
technical users, whereas the existing installation-guide is suitable for
more technically-inclined users.

The title used by the existing installation-guide package is "Ubuntu
Installation Guide". This is likely to confuse people when the new guide
is released, especially if they arrive at the guide via Google. The
title of the installation-guide should be changed to reflect its more
technical nature.

The new title should encourage technical users to read installation-
guide rather than the new, more basic guide. It should discourage non-
technical users from reading installation-guide, which is likely to
confuse them.

[Bug 395360] Re: Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide

2009-07-04 Thread Phil Bull
Thanks for your feedback.

It wouldn't make sense, because then we'd be covering two very different
installation methods simultaneously, both ubiquity and debian-installer.
We'd also be targeting two very different user groups. When you write
(good) documentation, it's very important to write to a specific
audience so you can take into account their individual needs and
existing knowledge. Writing for non-techs and techs simultaneously will
result in something that is unsuitable for both groups. I'm not
interested in producing a massive 200 page treatise on everything there
is to know about installing Ubuntu either, because *no-one* wants that
information. The new guide is being written in response to a perceived
user need. Please see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Specs/KarmicInstallationGuide and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Specs/KarmicInstallationGuide/FAQs for more on
this.

Each guide should link to the other, in order to send users who've
accidentally arrived at the wrong guide on to the right one. This bug is
about changing the title so that it's immediately obvious which guide is
which. I haven't said that the new guide will be called the "Ubuntu
Installation Guide". We'll choose a name appropriate to the target
audience later on in the development process.

""Deciding arbitrarily that "newcomers have priority, so the old guide
should give up its name" seems unhelpful.""

I based the decision on the answers to the following questions: Which is
the larger user group? Which user group is more likely to be confused by
which guide? Is there a sufficiently large body of legacy users who will
be adversely affected by a name change of the installation-guide?

[Bug 395360] Re: Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide

2009-07-04 Thread Phil Bull
Hi Jonathan,

Wow, that's a long post. I apologise in advance for the necessary length
of my reply. Also, please understand that I'm replying on behalf of a
team of 7 people here, not just myself.

I think it might help if I first give you some background on my desire
to create a new installation guide. I've been a member of the Ubuntu
Documentation team for several years now, and the first work that I
performed there was writing the Switching from Windows guide. This is
now in need of replacement. My assessment of the state of that guide was
that it tried to be all things to all people, and ended up failing to be
useful to anyone. (You may have noticed that I'm worried about something
similar happening here!) There were no defined user personas, no general
aim to the guide, etc., fairly vital ingredients to producing good
documentation. You can't just say that "this document is for everyone!";
you have to have a clear picture of who you're writing for in your head
at all times.

While thinking about how best to replace the SFW guide, I tried to
identify the needs of users by analysing IRC logs (about 2GB worth of
questions!) and looking at the most popular pages on the help wiki and
the forums. My findings surprised me (always a good sign that I'm not
making things up); it seemed that *lots* of people were interested in
relatively basic installation-related questions. For example, the most
popular page on the help wiki, even more popular than the front page, is
a document on how to burn Ubuntu to an ISO. That puts us firmly in non-
technical user territory. A technical user, in my definition, would most
likely understand the concept of CD images, or at least know what to do
with them. My proposed solution was to write an official installation
guide aimed at these users. How many users have we lost over the years
because they couldn't figure-out a "simple" thing like burning an ISO, I
wonder?

I was aware of the installation-guide package and have skimmed through
it previously. It is *completely* unsuitable for non-technical users. I
know this from experience. I previously worked in technical support,
have worked as a technical reviewer on a book ("Ubuntu for Non-Geeks"),
and have been writing documentation for a good 4-5 years now. Still, you
shouldn't have to take my word for it. Print a copy of the guide out and
find a non-technical user and see what they understand. See if they can
install Ubuntu, without any prompting from you. My expectation is that
most would fall at the first hurdle and fail to burn the ISO onto a CD
correctly!

OK, so hopefully that's enough background. I'll now move on to
addressing some specific points from your reply. Forgive me if I sound a
little terse, I'm trying to be brief.

(a) "Putting some more technical material along with that introductory
material should help ensure that all the material related to Ubuntu
installation is clear and consistent in its use of terminology, and so
would make both parts of the whole more useful."

When we write documentation, we refer to a style guide. This ensures
consistent terminology. Consistency is a poor reason to include
technical information. A good reason to include technical information is
if it is necessary to allow the user to accomplish their task.

(b) "determining what the common installation issues for Karmic will be,
before it is released, will be a challenge!"

Indeed, which is why Nathan Handler is filling a role entirely devoted
to user testing and collecting information on common problems. My own
researches suggest that there are certain issues which crop-up every
release, such as GRUB errors and problems with partitioning. We will
concentrate on these as much as possible, since handling hardware-
specific problems is too big a task, as you say. It is likely that only
hardware-specific problems with sufficiently common hardware will be
included in the Troubleshooting section.

(c) "The really simple Ubuntu installs in effect need no documentation"

It seems likely from this comment that you have never seen an unassisted
non-technical user install Ubuntu for themselves. You may be surprised
at the problems people run into. Besides, ubiquity isn't the biggest
generator of user assistance queries. It's the bits before, and possibly
after, that are.

(d) "That does not mean what you personally are or are not interested in
is the best way to decide what the Ubuntu community as a whole is best
served by"

I hope I have answered this comment by explaining my motivations, above.
I am basing as many of my decisions as possible on user testing and
analysis of common user assistance queries. My interests lie firmly in
providing a good user experience for our users, although I understand
that perhaps that wasn't obvious.

(e) ""I don't think many "non-tech" end users will be printing out this
installation documentation anyway, so number of pages is perhaps a poor
metric to be using.""

That's true, but I do anticipate a use case wh

[Bug 231367] Re: In Yelp links dead

2008-06-22 Thread Phil Bull
Confirmed, ubuntu-docs 8.04.2~hardy.

Here are the steps to reproduce (it's not a duplicate of 231228, it
seems):

 1. Click System -> Help and Support
 1. Click Advanced Topics -> Writing Your Own Programs
 1. Click "Learning how to program" (either on the page itself or in the
sidebar)

The title of the Yelp window changes to "Loading...", but the page never
loads. If you then click on "C and C++", Yelp crashes with the following
error:

**
** Yelp:ERROR:(yelp-document.c:275):yelp_document_cancel_page: assertion
failed: (document != NULL && YELP_IS_DOCUMENT (document))
Aborted

You can get to the "Learning how to program" page by first clicking "C
and C++", and then clicking "Learning how to program" in the sidebar.

Two other links exhibit the same behaviour:

 * Other programming languages
 * Development Tools

[Bug 260319] [NEW] libpam-runtime fails to install (debconf DbDriver error)

2008-08-22 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-runtime

Updating using update-manager fails due to the package libpam-runtime
(1.0.1-3ubuntu3). The following error details are provided by update-
manager:

debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another
process: Resource temporarily unavailable
Setting up libpam-runtime (1.0.1-3ubuntu3) ...
debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another
process: Resource temporarily unavailable
dpkg: error processing libpam-runtime (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libpam-runtime
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
[...]

I'm running an otherwise up-to-date Ubuntu Intrepid and have received
this error twice in different updates over the last 24 hours. The
problem appears to be with /usr/sbin/update-grub locking
/var/cache/debconf/config.dat.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10

$ sudo fuser /var/cache/debconf/config.dat
/var/cache/debconf/config.dat: 4503

$ ps aux | grep 4503
root 4503 0.0 0.8 10816 9088 ?S08:39 0:00 /usr/bin/perl
-w /usr/share/debconf/frontend /usr/sbin/update-grub

$ sudo kill 4503

After killing the process (4503 in this case) and running update-manager
again, the upgrade can be completed successfully.

[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-13 Thread Phil Bull
Hi Osama,

While there is technically an ambiguity between "Linux the operating
system" and "Linux the kernel", in practice there is no confusion, for
the following reasons:

 * Most users neither know nor care what a kernel is, and any user
documentation is going to be referring to "Linux the operating system" 99% of
the time anyway; the fact that there is a kernel named "Linux" is irrelevant to
most users.
 * The kernel is an integral part of the operating system, so for most purposes
"Linux the operating system" and "Linux the kernel" are synonymous. There is no
need to differentiate between the two.
 * "Linux" is the dominant term used to refer to "Linux the operating system".
Attempting to use the term "GNU/Linux" may confuse users, who may have only
ever heard it referred to as "Linux".

I concede that the term "Linux" is used wrongly in this context, but
that doesn't matter; everyone else uses it wrongly too. There is little
value in trying to correct people's usage of these terms, especially
since doing so may confuse some readers. "Linux" is the more common
term, so we should continue to use that.

[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-13 Thread Phil Bull
Hi Osama,

I disagree that the term "GNU/Linux" isn't confusing. Try asking a few
non-technical computer users their opinion. We can't rely on users
having read "about-ubuntu" either - most users look at the documentation
to find a small snippet of information and then stop reading. Very few
read the whole documentation. It is best for individual topics to stand
alone without requiring any detailed preparatory reading.

Also, I don't think that the aim of our user documentation should be to
encourage people to learn more about Linux. Rather, it should be to
provide users with answers to their problems. User assistance must
always take preference over evangelism.

[Bug 263779] Re: Evince takes over global shortcut keys

2008-09-03 Thread Phil Bull
I also have this issue. It's extremely annoying!

Whenever evince is running, it "takes over" my media keys. When I press
the "Play/Pause" button on my keyboard, evince goes fullscreen. What
should happen is that the audio player (e.g. Rhythmbox) starts or stops
playing. Pressing the "Previous" or "Next" keys skips forward or back a
page in evince. What should happen is that the audio player plays the
next or previous track.

The original function of the keys is not returned once evince is closed
unless you focus Rhythmbox at some point:

 1. Start Rhythmbox.
 2. Press "Play/Pause" key. Track starts playing.
 3. Open evince and switch focus to another application (e.g. gedit, Firefox).
 4. Press "Play/Pause" key. Evince goes fullscreen.
 5. Exit evince.
 6. Press "Play/Pause" key. Nothing happens.
 7. Focus Rhthmbox.
 8. Press "Play/Pause" key. Tracks is paused (expected behaviour).
 9. Defocus Rhythmbox. Press "Play/Pause" key. Track starts playing (expected
behaviour).

In summary, evince should not capture the multimedia keys, nor indeed
any global keyboard shortcuts.

Settings in System -> Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts:
Play (or Play/Pause): XF86AudioPlay
Previous Track:XF86AudioPrev
Next Track:XF86AudioNext

[Bug 264314] [NEW] Brasero documentation does not appear in Yelp search results

2008-09-03 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

To reproduce:

 1. Click System -> Help and Support
 2. Type "brasero" into the search box and hit Return
 3. Two search results are shown, neither of which are the Brasero manual

(N.B. I'm referring to the DocBook manual, not the man page.)

Expected: The Brasero manual is shown in the search results.

The Brasero manual can be accessed by opening Brasero and clicking Help
-> Contents, so it's definitely installed. It's probably not being added
to the scrollkeeper DB when the package is installed, so can't be
accessed normally through Yelp.

If you open a Terminal and type "yelp ghelp:brasero", the file can't be
found. However, other properly-installed documentation can be (e.g.
"yelp ghelp:rhythmbox").

[Bug 395905] Re: "System->About Ubuntu" should more directly display version information

2009-08-11 Thread Phil Bull
Wow, I can't believe that such a minor bug has generated so many
comments. I'm going to add one more:

I know that the policy states that we should refer to Ubuntu releases by
their release number, but a sufficient number of people use the
codenames that we should provide some way of users finding out what
their codename is. That is, we should at least mention what the codename
is somewhere obvious. The use cases for needing to know the codename are
the same as those for needing to know the release number.

[Bug 395360] Re: Title of guide should be changed to avoid confusion with new installation guide

2009-07-17 Thread Phil Bull
This seems likely. I'm probably the person from the Doc Team who is most
interested in installation, and I've never submitted a patch for it. I
can't speak for others, but I've never done this because I'm not
interested in the users that this guide is aimed at (and also because
contributing upstream like this can be a bit of a hassle sometimes and
I'm lazy).

I don't think that the installation-guide is a bad document or that it's
impossible to understand, although I understand that my comments may
have given that impression. It's just that this document is aimed at a
very different, far more advanced, user group to the one that I
concentrate on.

It's also worth noting that, if you have some documentation that you
want someone to look at, let us (the Doc Team) know! The amount of
documentation that ships with Ubuntu is truly immense, and the Doc Team
is small and volunteer-led. We can't keep tabs on all of it ourselves,
so we really appreciate it when people let us know if something needs
particular attention.

[Bug 394335] Re: Nautilus "Changing Backgrounds" help is tl; dr and doesn't cross-reference desktop background

2009-07-17 Thread Phil Bull
That would be a good solution to the licensing issue I think. If we
rewrite the whole section, I'd like to plan it properly first and
collect some user testing data. I'll try to recruit someone to work on
it upstream. The only problems I see with that is that we'd have to
convert it from DocBook to Mallard in a release cycle or two, and it
might look out of place for a while.

I understand that you won't see many people looking at the help and
experiencing problems, although data on that would be useful if you had
it. Rather, I was referring to problems that users experience in
general. If lots of them are having the same problem and it's nothing
that's going to be fixed in the UI any time soon, then we should provide
documentation to help people with the problem.

[Bug 50327] Tracing doesn't work

2006-06-19 Thread Phil Bull
Public bug reported:

Enabling the orbit-tracing feature of planets (0.1.12-6ubuntu1) causes
the main screen to pause indefinitely - no movement occurs although you
can still add new objects. Even resetting the universe will not allow
movement, so you must restart the application.

To reproduce this, start planets and press the 'j' key a few times to
add some planets. Then, press 't' to enable tracing. The expected result
of this is that tracing is enabled and objects start drawing lines
behind them. Instead, the main screen just pauses.

The following output is given in the terminal on pressing 't':

Uncaught exception: Protocol.TkError("wrong # args: should be \".f1.ca2

[Bug 15179] Re: Users should be discouraged from editing temporary files

2007-05-14 Thread Phil Bull
Mozilla upstream didn't reject the bug, the bug was rejected in the
Firefox product on Launchpad, which is technically upstream of the
Ubuntu/Firefox product. It's a particularly confusing feature of
Launchpad's.

I don't even think that a bug has been filed for this in the Mozilla bug
tracker. Would someone like to volunteer to take care of this?

and then attach each to their respective bug reports.

[Bug 144783] Re: Intro paragraph in "Advanced topics" section doesn't really help

2007-10-08 Thread Phil Bull
Thanks for the patch Mads. Just a couple of comments:

 * The phrase "to your special needs" seems a little redundant, so could
probably be removed.
 * "info" => "information"

I think that your patch is an improvement over the original. I disagree
with mpt that a user would be more likely to solve their problem (at all
significantly) faster if the paragraph was not there, as I doubt most
users read intro paragraphs! However, I do agree that an intro paragraph
is not necessary in this case. I'm fine with it either way - a) updated
text or b) no text.
