I've tried Jared's PPA, the packages from maverick proposed, 1.9.0ubuntu7.3, as well as rebuilding it from source and making sure the patch was in there, and none of them fixed the issue for me. nvidia GTX 260. I'm seeing this as well. The up and down keys do not function, and the only way to set volume in alsamixer is to hit the number keys. Update for anybody that's interested: By default my HDA Intel card wasn't being selected. Hitting F6 and selecting the right sound card fixes it.
