Re: [Bug 761632] Re: crash on startup before any activities

2011-04-22 Thread Paul W
Hi Bryce,

Freezes seem to be video related. No freezes like this prior to natty. It seems
fixed now after various updates, previously it would happen randomly- unable to
reproduce reliably.

Regards,
Paul

Hi, I'm new to Ubuntu bug testing, so hopefully I've done this
correctly.

I can confirm the problem has been fixed, after upgrading to mutter /
libmutter-5-0 3.34.1+git20191107-1ubuntu1~19.10.1. (via aptitude). Thank
you.

[Bug 58232] Re: gnome-terminal does not start when using xinerama and nvidia

2007-03-28 Thread Paul W. Poteete
I've just worked this problem through with a friend, and he was having
the same issue.

Adding the following entry to xorg.conf under screen fixed the problem.

Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

Tested after a reboot and everything worked fine.

I.e.
-
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "NVIDIA Corporation NVIDIA Default Card"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

[Bug 763688] Re: [915GM] S-video output doesn't work in Natty (i386)

2012-04-13 Thread Paul W Panish
After screwing around with things for a few months I've realized my
system's behavior is stranger than it originally appeared, and perhaps
my problem is a different bug from what's been reported here. Still
running the same system from my prior post (Ubuntu 11.10, Toshiba M700
Laptop, Docking Station, Intel GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics
Controller) I've found that I can reliably get dual montors to work with
the following procedure:

- Boot with only the VGA monitor attached to the docking station (VGA works
normally with LVDS1)
- After boot is complete, connect DVI monitor (output switches to DVI, VGA goes
blank)
- Using arandr disable LVDS1 output (output switches back to VGA)
- Using arandr enable DVI output (dual displays active)
- To make DVI primary, disable/enable VGA output

If I boot with the DVI monitor connected I've found no way to get the
VGA output to work, even if it is detected by the OS.

I don't know how to debug this in any reasonable fashion. If this is
interesting to anyone that can walk me through the relevant data
collection steps I'd be glad to get what information I can.

[Bug 971091] Re: Pandaboard ES freezes with the default CPU scaling governor ondemand

2012-05-22 Thread Paul W Panish
I ran "update-rc.d ondemand disable" which renamed all links to ondemand
to K01ondemand so that they should not be run during system
initialization. However, the system is still coming up with the CPU
governor set to ondemand. I can add cpufreq-set to my rc.local, but it
would be nice to know why this is happening. Is it a default kernel
mode?

[Bug 971091] Re: Pandaboard ES freezes with the default CPU scaling governor ondemand

2012-09-27 Thread Paul W Panish
I don't believe this has been fixed in the Ubuntu release. My system
crashed twice within 12 hours after I updated the kernel and switched
back to "ondemand". I'm verifying now that it doesn't crash in
"performance" mode.

ppanish@ppanda:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=12.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=precise

If there's any specific information you'd like me to gather let me know.

[Bug 971091] Re: Pandaboard ES freezes with the default CPU scaling governor ondemand

2012-09-28 Thread Paul W Panish
No crash in "performance" mode after 24+ hours. This has definitely not
been fixed in the release version with the 3.2.0-1419-omap4 kernel . I
don't know about the repository builds. THIS SHOULD NOT BE MARKED AS
FIXED!! Please reactivate the bug.

I hope no one is saying that disabling frequency scaling is a legitimate
fix for this problem. That would be like saying if you power down the
board there are no issues with how it runs.

[Bug 1059555] [NEW] Pandaboard ES freezes with CPU scaling governor ondemand

2012-10-01 Thread Paul W Panish
Public bug reported:

Bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ti-omap4/+bug/971091
appears to have been "fixed" by making the default frequency scaling
setting "performance". This sets the processors to a fixed clock, but
does not address the underlying crash when scaling is being used to vary
the processor clock to match demand.

Here's version information for the failing system. Could you describe
the meaning of O, P, and Q? I assume these are branches. but I'm not
building kernels at this point, just trying to use what's out there.

This now seems to be working properly. Either multiple boots were needed

[Bug 1016012] Re: Backup (Déjà Dup) needs to run with root permissions in Precise

2012-06-21 Thread Paul W Panish
I'm also not convinced that running as root would be advisable. I think
the question here is why the situation changed from 11.10 to 12.04. I
suspect the problem is not actually with Déjà Dup, but with a change in
permissions with how diverse files are generated. I would have preferred
to file this as a system bug, but the only clear module to report
against was the backup utilities.

2012-06-21 Thread Paul W Panish
Michael, thanks for the information.

In that case I agree that file exclusion would be useful. As it is I'll
just add some more directories to the exclusion list, and change a few
file permissions to work around the issue.

[Bug 763688] Re: [915GM] S-video output doesn't work in Natty (i386)

2012-03-05 Thread Paul W Panish
Is there anything that could be done to raise the priority on this? The
problem appears to have been around for a very long time. I've switched
back to Linux after many years on Windows in various development
environments. I'm very impressed with how Linux has progressed, but it's
frustrating and embarassing to be limited to a single monitor in a
development environment.

I've experienced the same failure (VGA inoperable, DVI works as
expected) in Ubuntu 11.10 on a Toshiba M700 with docking station. This
problem appears to affect multiple Intel Chipsets and probably is having
a combined effect larger that is being tracked on individual bug
reports across organizations.
