Add/set in /etc/default/grub:
GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT=true

and run "sudo update-grub" to have GRUB remember the kernel you booted

Jochen, try the kernel in http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.7.10-raring/ or the last official 3.5 kernel from
Quantal. I don't think you have to downgrade to Precise.

Jochen, no it does not get security updates. I don't know if Canonical
still updates their 3.5 kernel. You can get an updated 3.4 from
https://www.kernel.org/ if that works for you.

[Bug 1441344] Re: [Intel Thurley] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2015-04-11 Thread Patrik Lundquist
Joseph, the NVIDIA 340.76 driver won't build with Linux v4.0-rc7-vivid
and nouveau since Linux 3.8 broke suspend for NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
(and a bunch of similar cards) so testing suspend with v4.0 is a bit of
a mess.

But I went back to v3.7.10-raring, which I know should work, and I've
nailed down the problem to the JMicron JMB363 SATA/IDE Controller being
in "AHCI+IDE Mode" instead of "IDE Mode" in BIOS.

I don't know whom to blame yet. :-)

I've tested the v4.0-rc7-vivid kernel now and the bug is there too.

A "PCIE-to-SATAII/IDE RAID Controller BIOSv1.06.65" Option ROM kicks in
in "AHCI+IDE Mode".

Noted differences:

Non-working AHCI+IDE Mode:

2015-04-12 Thread Patrik Lundquist
Christopher, I'm pretty sure it did but I haven't used the BIOS option
before. I went looking for a VT-d option in the BIOS and figured that
AHCI is better than IDE. I was wrong. :-)

"IDE Mode" is the default.

related to the bug report.

2013-08-11 Thread Patrik Lundquist
1) Logged in with User1.
2) Logged in with User2 on the desktop too.
3) Switched to the virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F1).
4) Switched backed to the desktop (Ctrl-Alt-F7) and gnome-shell crashed.
5) Got the broken desktop of User1 instead of User2, which has serious security
implications since it is working well enough to send this bug report.

[Bug 1441344] Re: [Intel Thurley] suspend/resume failure [non-free: nvidia]

2015-04-16 Thread Patrik Lundquist
Christopher, I've reproduced it with current Vivid beta and kernels:

v3.7.10-raring (mainline kernel)
3.19.0-12-generic
3.19.0-13-generic
v4.0-rc7-vivid (mainline kernel)

I only recently tried the BIOS option, after I upgraded to Vivid beta,
so I've also tried these LTS Live CDs now:

ubuntu-12.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso
ubuntu-14.04.2-desktop-amd64.iso

They also fail in "AHCI+IDE Mode" with the difference that 12.04.5
(3.13.0-32.57~precise1-generic) tries to resume immediately from
suspend.

[Bug 1363719] Re: efibootmgr may create a duplicated boot entry, "breaking" UEFI boot.

2014-10-29 Thread Patrik Lundquist
BTW, an alternative to rEFInd and Live CD is booting an Ubuntu Server
ISO and selecting Rescue a broken system. Works with LUKS disk
encryption too.

Run grub-install after replacing efibootmgr with a working version.

No, libdrm 2.4.46-1ubuntu1 doesn't solve the problem. Linux kernel 3.7
is still the last working one.

I consider the bug a show stopper since Ubuntu doesn't have a
\EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI fallback like Fedora.

[Bug 1331149] Re: Bluetooth: hci0 failed to open Intel firmware file

2014-06-18 Thread Patrik Lundquist
It's a rather new laptop so I've only had Trusty installed on it and
can't say if it's a new issue. Haven't been using Bluetooth so I didn't
notice it until now.

Ten suspend/resume cycles have worked so far with kernel v3.15.1-utopic
but it's too early to say if it's fixed since it seems to be a
timing/race condition. Will keep on trying.

I haven't looked at the firmware loading code but the disks resume
asynchronously in Linux 3.15 which might affect the timing required to
trigger the bug.

[Bug 1182835] Re: connecting to databases does not work

2013-10-11 Thread Patrik Lundquist
Version 1.0.2 doesn't support Python 3.3 properly.

It was fixed upstream with commit https://github.com/python-
postgres/fe/commit/272edfcd2a008aba1b97170a2138e8a91cb67177

Launchpad needs to import a newer upstream version.

[Bug 427714] Re: smbc assert failure: *** buffer overflow detected ***: smbc terminated

2012-12-17 Thread Patrik Lundquist
I used Valgrind to track down and fix some bugs. I bet there's still a
ton of bugs left to discover but at least it is possible to browse
network shares and copy files now.

I had to create the file ~/.smbc/smbcrc with the option "workgroup
WORKGROUP" (see doc) to get smbc to respond to keystrokes other than
Ctrl-C.

I also changed the compilation flag from -O3 to -O2 since the former
triggers a lot of errors in Valgrind and likely makes smbc more crash
prone due to the remaining bugs.
