[Bug 107545] Re: CPU Scaling too aggressive

2009-05-14 Thread Owen Williams
I have a good, fast machine, a Dell XPS M1330 (800MHz-2.4Ghz), and I've
seen this problem too with flash videos. The new default threshold is
too high. I find a value of 35 or lower is needed to properly scale the
CPU while playing back video.

[Bug 107545] Re: CPU Scaling too aggressive

2009-05-15 Thread Owen Williams
That setting doesn't seem to help much, if at all. the cpu is still
mostly staying on the lowest setting and I'm still dropping frames.
Right now I'm using this video as a test, because it has a lot of pans
which make dropped frames more obvious:
http://www.myfoxla.com/dpp/news/local/California_Ghost_Towns_20090511

I get an "Invalid Argument" error if I try to set the sampling rate
lower than 4

I can understand the power-saving issue, but I'm on AC power.

[Bug 382792] [NEW] headphone detection incorrectly mutes additional line outputs on 3stack card

2009-06-02 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell M1330 which has three jacks on the front of the machine,
one normal output, one switchable line out / line in, and one switchable
line out / mic in. I have my system set up for DJing where I want to
use two outputs independently. So in alsamixer, I enable "Line In as
Output" and plug my second cable into the second jack. The problem is,
if I connect a cable to the first output, it mutes the second output.
If I remove the cable from that first output, I hear sound out of the
second output again.

This bug has been very inconsistent for me. For a while, it did work
correctly. Another time, plugging a cable into the first output did not
mute the laptop speakers. I have tried setting various model="?"
parameters, including 3stack, dell-3stack, and auto, but I can't get the
behavior consistent. model="3stack" seems to work the best. (Other
model= parameters seem to remove the "line in as output" option)

My workaround so far is to enable "mic as output" and use just the
second two outputs on the card (with nothing plugged into the primary
output), but this shouldn't be necessary.

[Bug 368862] [NEW] unclutter default idle time is too short

2009-04-28 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unclutter

The default idle time for clutter in Jaunty is 1 second -- way too
short. As I'm just browsing the web, there are short periods of time
when the mouse stops moving, but I'm not done with it yet. With a 1
second timeout, ubuntu is much too eager to hide my mouse cursor and the
cursor almost appears to blink as I browse. And, given that this is a
new feature in jaunty, it's difficult to figure out what's going on.

I think a slightly longer delay, even 3 seconds, results in a much more
pleasing experience.

[Bug 294812] [NEW] "swapper tainted" messages spew in logs until disk fills

2008-11-06 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Hardware: Dell M1330 (my own installation of ubuntu)
Software: Intrepid Ibex with newest kernel and backports module package
installed (to solve wireless hard crashes)

Occasionally, usually after a resume from suspend, I get phenomenal log
spew that looks like the attached file. I also see references to the
message "scheduling from idle thread!"

The log spew is so fast that it pegs one of my CPU cores and fills up
the logs to 2GB within 15 minutes or so, and my system slows to a crawl.

Looking at the logs, it seems to be related to the wireless card

[Bug 286285] Re: kernel 2.6.27-7-generic bug BUG: scheduling while atomic: swapper/0/0x00000100

2008-11-08 Thread Owen Williams
The package you're looking for is, I think, linux-backports-
modules-2.6.27-7-generic (2.6.27-7.6), not linux-image-whatever. Since
I've installed that package (two or three resumes from suspend) I
haven't had any problems.

The way I found the package was by filtering for upgradable packages in
synaptic after enabling the -proposed repo. The only one that was
kernel-related was the backports-modules package.

[Bug 246815] [NEW] minimize animation doesn't work if no window list (with patch)

[Bug 131958] Re: PenguinTV segfaults with GtkWarning: gtk_window_resize: assertion `width > 0' failed

2008-08-11 Thread Owen Williams
I would suggest rolling a new package based on version 3.65, which I've
finally been able to upload. The postinst workaround is a hack, and is
not the correct way of solving the problem. 3.65 uses a more robust
method of correctly setting MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME.

Although 3.65 is tagged as "unstable," it's probably in better shape
than 3.0 at this point. I'm planning to add just one more minor feature
before I call it 4.0.

[Bug 242713] Re: "Use sound to notify in event of an error" is not useful

2008-08-20 Thread Owen Williams
I'd argue that it's more than not useful, it's extremely annoying and
misleading. We have two dell laptops in the house that had this
problem. Due to the pc-speaker-like sound of the beeps, and the fact
that the volume of the sound is very loud independent of the mixer
settings, I thought this was a BIOS bug. I've been googling "dell
resume BIOS alarm" for literally months trying to figure out this
problem. I only found this bug report by searching for "dell resume
loud beep" eventually. (Getting up in the morning and hearing loud
beeps from my resuming laptop is a rude awakening.)

I understand the need for a sound-only alarm, and that it can't be
language-specific, but it needs to be a little more gentle, more like a
mac error sound than the current "angry series of beeps" sound.

It also must correspond to an actual error, as stated. I hear the sound
50% of the time I resume, but only if it resumes successfully. I never
hear the sound when resume fails. That's pretty poor. The option
should be disabled until it starts correlating with actual failure.

On a Dell 1420n of mine, recently upgraded to Intrepid, the default

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] fglrx breaks over suspend/resume

It should be pretty trivial to add code to the sleep script to check for

at least it would prevent users from suspending their machines
improperly.

tried the 99-restore-volume script, but amixer says it can't find a

[Bug 36922] Re: No delay on tooltips

2007-08-01 Thread Owen Williams
I would suggest that there should be a short delay for the first
tooltip, perhaps a second, and then the subsequent tooltips come up
instantly as the user scrubs over the items.

[Bug 109076] no gui to add user to group kmem

2007-04-22 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

/dev/nvram is now owned by group "kmem," which does not appear in the
list in the gnome tool to configure users and groups. I had to manually
add myself to the kmem group so I could use the thinkpad buttons utility
(tpb).

nvram seems like a basic device that users will need access to, and one
of the options in User Privileges should trigger this group.

[Bug 459277] Re: karmic kubuntu evolution folder select mouse target area miniscule gtk(?)

2010-01-07 Thread Owen Williams
There is more to this bug than just the side bars. It seems that mouse
clicks will often behave as if the mouse is positioned over whatever GUI
widget has focus. IE, if an email address in an email has focus, and I
click anywhere else in the email window, sometimes I get a new window to
that email address as if I had clicked on the email address. Or, if a
folder is selected in the side pane, and I click anywhere in that folder
list, sometimes the selected folder folds or unfolds.

Also, watch the mouse cursor as you move it through the interface. The
cursor does not change correctly when the mouse moves over widgets like
pane borders or URL links.

This is with karmic, nvidia, and compiz.

so someone may want to change that.

[Bug 580333] Re: tomboy notes disappeared

2010-05-31 Thread Owen Williams
I don't know if this is the same bug, but I just lost my primary, most-
used tomboy note ("General Todo"). This note was so old, the filename
was New_Note_1.note (instead of an MD5 whatever). The file is still
there, but it's 0 bytes.

I restored a version of that note from backup, but I'm pissed because I
update it all the time and I've never lost anything in tomboy before. I
definitely did not accidentally delete the note. This is with Lucid
(non-beta).

[Bug 591070] [NEW] xrandr fade method fails, just cuts to black

2010-06-07 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I noticed recently that my laptop no longer fades to black when the
screen locks, either from suspending, logging out, or just locking the
screen. I built the gnome-screensaver package and ran test-fade, and
sure enough it doesn't fade, the screen just goes black. If I edit gs-
fade.c and disable the xrandr fade method, the screensaver uses gamma
ramps instead and this results in a proper fade.

This is with nvidia proprietary drivers and compiz.

I'm almost certain that the fades were working previously with Lucid,
this is a recent regression from the past week or two.

[Bug 382792] Re: headphone detection incorrectly mutes additional line outputs on 3stack card

2009-09-04 Thread Owen Williams
Is there any progress being made on this bug? My workaround, to use the
second two outputs and avoid the first, has a big problem. The third
audio output has significantly different sound characteristics from the
first two outputs. It sounds tinny and thin, like it's lacking in bass.
So I can't use that output. As it stands, I don't have a usable way to
have two audio outputs.

[Bug 364530] Re: keyboard and mouse freeze after login

2009-09-28 Thread Owen Williams
I think I have a similar issue, although I can use my computer for long
periods of time before I get the input freeze. In my case, the mouse
still works, although it won't click, and I can still press ctrl-alt-f1
to get to a console. And I can still type in the console as well. So
it seems to be strictly an X issue.

[Bug 49537] mixer applet no longer works

Public bug reported:

Today, the mixer applet stopped working. If I try to add it to the

The panel encountered a problem while loading

Also every time I log in I get a message that the gnome settings daemon

I see the following on the terminal:

[Bug 1690051] Re: pulseaudio crashed with SIGSEGV in publish_service() from once_callback() from dispatch_defer() from pa_mainloop_dispatch() from pa_mainloop_iterate()

2018-11-14 Thread Owen Williams
>From my own debugging, the crash appears to be in this line:

if (!s->userdata->client || avahi_client_get_state(s->userdata->client) !=
AVAHI_CLIENT_S_RUNNING)
return;

adding a check for !s->userdata seems to fix the issue (for some reason,
probably due to a race condition, userdata is null at the time of the
call).

[Bug 1804513] Re: Cosmic: Mixxx 2.1.3 is not stable with Qt5

2019-03-29 Thread Owen Williams
Mixxx doesn't follow a stable/unstable release process. All mixxx
releases are considered stable and we recommend users always upgrade to
the latest version. Any release may introduce new bugs, but many more
are also fixed. We do offer point releases for a limited amount of time
to address critical bugs, but most bugfixes are only committed to
master.

The biggest change in 2.2 is linking against QT5 by default instead of
QT4. Mixxx has been working on the migration from QT4 to QT5 for a
while, and as of version 2.1.x, the QT5 build was not ready, so all of
our binaries shipped linked against QT4. Any public release of 2.1
linked against QT5 is a mistake and will result in a bad user
experience.

[Bug 1808957] Re: Dell XPS 13 (9370) defaults to s2idle sleep/suspend instead of deep

I'd like the second the suggestion that s2idle sleep not be used at

It wasn't easy to figure out what the problem was and the battery drain
will significantly reduce the lifespan of the laptop for users that
don't know to change the setting.

[Bug 1311863] [NEW] Reinstall procedure does not delete old kernels

2014-04-23 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

Apologies if this is the wrong component. I am writing about the
"reinstall" process that the Ubuntu installer provides as an
installation option.

This option worked great, however it left a number of old kernels in
/boot. It did remove the kernel modules from /lib/modules, but the
kernels themselves still hung around. This caused a problem on my next
boot when one of these old kernels was booted by default (I had been
debugging a mainline kernel) and I had no mouse support because there
were no modules.

If the reinstall procedure is going to delete modules from /lib/modules,
it needs to delete the images from /boot as well.

[Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-04-21 Thread Owen Williams
Still happens. The most consistent way to reproduce is:

* Have laptop plugged in by AC
* Close lid
* Remove AC
* Wait for suspend.
* Open lid, leave AC unplugged.
* Wait several seconds, laptop resuspends

The best workaround is disabling suspend-on-lid-close.

[Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-04-22 Thread Owen Williams
I tried testing again with the newest Ubuntu liveCD, and at least in
that environment it works correctly. And the wifi reconnects much more
quickly too. It's looking more likely that this is some strange quirk
of my system which has been upgraded a few times and may have some bad
config hiding somewhere.

Is there an accepted way to reinstall Ubuntu on top of an existing
installation, preserving at least the home directory? Otherwise I'll
just flatten and reinstall and see if that fixes it.

[Bug 1243647] Re: [Asus 1005HA] Resuming from suspend mode : suspend loop

2013-12-16 Thread Owen Williams
This is not fix with kernel linux-
image-3.13.0-999-generic_3.13.0-999.201312110530_amd64.deb on my system.
I still get a double suspend:

Lid closed.
Suspending...
Failed to execute operation: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include:
the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy
blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was
broken.
Suspending...
Operation finished.
Lid opened.

[Bug 1243647] Re: [Asus 1005HA] Resuming from suspend mode : suspend loop

2013-12-17 Thread Owen Williams
Thanks for the information, I'll file a new bug. From your instructions
I couldn't figure out which folder to get a kernel from. I don't
understand "the one all the way on the bottom," since the daily folder
appears on the bottom for me.

[Bug 1261753] [NEW] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2013-12-17 Thread Owen Williams
Public bug reported:

I am seeing this behavior:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1243647 and was
told to file a separate bug. It takes 10-15 seconds for the second
suspend to trigger. I can tell I'm going to get a double-suspend when
the network doesn't come up after resume. I have tried the nmcli nm
sleep false trick.

[Bug 1509776] Re: xubuntu 15.10 synaptics ps2 touchpad mouse cursor jumps

2016-02-03 Thread Owen Williams
I also started seeing this problem after I upgraded to 15.10. I'll be
typing and then the cursor will zip to one edge of the screen or the
other. I'm on a Dell XPS 13 (2013 model). Currently seeing the issue
with kernel 4.2.0-27

My current experiment is to kill syndaemon to see if palm detection is
the issue, and then being really really sure that I'm not touching the
touchpad while I type.

[Bug 1325752] Re: All apps become mute when certain apps are opened.

"stops producing sound" is often accurate. Sometimes just pausing a
media player is enough for pulse to release the device. But not always
-- it depends on the player.

[Bug 1325752] Re: All apps become mute when certain apps are opened.

2014-10-06 Thread Owen Williams
It should not be necessary to run pasuspender. Pulseaudio releases its
audio device following a short delay (5 sec?) after the last application
using pulse stops producing sound. So, for instance, if I am playing a
youtube video and run Mixxx, I will notice that my sound card is not
available. If I close the tab with the video, wait a few seconds, and
then Query Devices, my sound card appears and I can select it (no need
to restart Mixxx!).

I think we should work on a feature to detect when pulseaudio has
grabbed devices and show a warning, like "PulseAudio is using device
[], please close [list of applications using pulse?] to allow Mixxx
to access it."

[Bug 1108373] Re: Wish: permanent sync during auto-play

Not by default, since some people like autodj to just play tracks at
natural rate and not worry about trainwrecks. Maybe a handy SYNC ALL

autodj specific.

[Bug 1261753] Re: [Dell XPS 13 (L322X)] Laptop often suspends once immediately after resume

2014-01-07 Thread Owen Williams
Another thing that seems related: it used to be that I could close the
lid with AC plugged in, and the laptop wouldn't suspend (that's how I
have it set). Then, if I removed the AC power, it still wouldn't
suspend. Now, if I remove power it does seem to check that the lid is
closed and it suspends.

I think this is related because I can prevent the double-suspend by
either plugging or unplugging the AC adapter before resuming. As long
as I reverse the state versus the power source at the time of suspend,
the laptop stays on.

[Bug 92599] Re: Incorrect (low/stuttering) refresh rate with NVIDIA driver

2011-10-24 Thread Owen Williams
Deactivating Bailer and increasing the refresh rate do improve, but
don't completely fix the problems. glxgears is smoother, but still
jerks noticeably from time to time and gets much smoother as the window
size increases. And moving and resizing windows is still much, much
slower than with compiz 0.8.6.
