Re: [Bug 495213] Re: Server install with LAMP asks three times for MySQL password

2009-12-14 Thread Norman Perelson
Hi Jonathan,

Thank you for the detailed email. While I agree with what you have said
I still think that you have missed something: *New users*. The first
time I installed Hardy server I was happy to see the easy selection of a
LAMP server and decided to leave the MySQL root password blank so that I
would not need to remember or document it. If I needed to use MySQL
later I presumed that I could assign the root password when required.
But when prompted a second time it made me think that I had made a
mistake. When prompted a 3rd time I thought either I was doing something
wrong or the installer had a bug. I was, quite frankly, surprised to see
that it is the same in Lucid.

If you put in a password the first time then it does not ask again.
Would it not be better to just prompt with an 'are you sure' the first
time you leave it blank and then remember that the blank password is
what the user wants?

With further thought I agree with you that adding further granularity to
the tasksel list is not a good idea. I should not have even suggested that!

By the way, what I have been doing for repeated installs, is set up one
server, install all updates then add a whole lot of extra stuff using
apt-get install, I also set up my own application programs and scripts,
and then simply clone the whole drive with dd rather that starting from
scratch. It is a lot faster. So for practical purposes I am very happy
with the installer as it is. I am just trying to help and will continue
to look for things that I believe should be fixed or improved. I want
others can get as much benefit from Ubuntu as I do.

Kind regards,
Norman

Nobody has mentioned the Drawer applet. It affects that too.

Re: [Bug 733866] Re: Battery indicator shows that laptop battery is fully charged when is not

2014-12-05 Thread Norman Perelson
Tested latest 5 Dec 2014 vivid-desktop-i386 image on the ‎Acer Aspire
One and am happy to report that the bug is fixed. The battery indicator
now correctly switches from fully-charged Power to Battery when the
power is removed.

Thank you for fixing it.

Miguel, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Quantal reached EOL on May
16, 2014.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Is this reproducible in the latest release of Ubuntu via
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ ?

If so, please execute the following via a terminal in order for the necessary
debugging information to be attached:
apport-collect 733866

Title:
Battery indicator shows that laptop battery is fully charged when is
not

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete

Bug description:
Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I have the laptop plugged to the AC power, the battery indicator
shows me the real value of percentage of my battery level.

Nonetheless, when I unplug the AC power and use the battery of the
laptop, the battery indicator tells me that the "laptop battery is
charged" even though it is not fully charged. It happens always, till
the laptop shuts down because there is no battery left.

In other words, the battery indicator works fine with AC power but it
does not when working with the battery of the laptop.

I am using ubuntu 11.04 alpha 3 (64 bits) with an HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop.
This very same problem happened to me already with the ubuntu 10.04 release
(and report the problem in the bug 577557) but a solution was not found. I hope
this time I arrive in time to be able to solve the problem.

Re: [Bug 733866] Re: Battery indicator shows "Laptop battery is charged" when is not

2012-10-30 Thread Norman Perelson
On 12.04 it is still faulty. (I have not tried 12.10.) Shows fully
charged and still on power after being unplugged and allowed to run
flat. It works perfectly if unplugged before booting Ubuntu.

If put on charge while the indicator is working, and allowed to become
fully charged, then the indicator gets stuck again.

Windows XP running in Virtualbox does show the correct battery level
regardless of the charge history.

On Acer Aspire One.

Re: [Bug 733866] Re: Battery indicator shows "Laptop battery is charged" when is not

2012-10-30 Thread Norman Perelson
Tested on 12.10: Same behaviour. (Battery status stays "charged" after
removing charging power.)

Discovered a work-around to get the is to unplug from charge for a
second or two, then plug in again for a second and then unplug it again
before the battery status has returned to fully charged.

I also found that suspending and waking the computer also gets the
battery indicator working again.
