[Bug 436248] Re: Karmic: Sound in Kino is not passed through pulseaudio

2009-11-22 Thread Nigel Stewart
When playing back video, and pulse audio active, no audio and video playback is
too fast.
And lots of output:

Could not open ALSA device "/dev/dsp": No such file or directory
ALSA lib pcm.c:2211:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM /dev/dsp

The padsp workaround improves video playback, but the audio sounds
choppy.

The workaround that works well for me (and others) is to use pasuspender
to suspect pulse audio and allow direct audio hardware access.

I've had two Ubuntu system suffer this problem to the extent that the /

I don't agree that simply increasing the frequency of log rotations is
an adequate solution.

The "acpi=off noapic" kernel parameter workaroud works for installing the

And interestingly, once installed to SATA drive the system boots and behaves
normally.

I'd be happy to try a new ISO or update the BIOS, for the purposes here.

[Bug 1568284] [NEW] Ubuntu 16.10 installer fails to backup packages

2016-04-09 Thread Nigel Stewart
Public bug reported:

Today I upgraded a 32-bit Ubuntu 12.04 using
ubuntu-16.04-beta2-desktop-amd64.iso on USB via unetbootin.
Overall, success! However, along the way I did start over due to a
time-consuming delay with a package backup step that appeared to be failing for
every single package. (I looked at the logs going by in the GUI installer)
Wasn't sure if it was due to Ubuntu 12.04, or due to 32-bit to 64-bit, but it
appeared to be failing. So I restarted and chose the
reformat-and-install-fresh option for the system partition (other partitions
for swap and /home) and it seems to skip this step and breeze on through the
installation. At this point I can't reproduce the issue, since the 12.04
32-bit is gone forever (bye, bye!) but here is a report in case it's helpful.

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

ubuntu-16.04-beta2-desktop-amd64.iso (GUI installer)

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

NA

3) What you expected to happen

Backup the system partition somehow and install 16.04.

4) What happened instead

It took a long time with what looked like failures to package each thing it
came across.
The "upgrade" from Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit to 16.04 64-bit didn't look it was going
to work as intended.
But I didn't wait and see, I rebooted and installed clean instead.

[Bug 1408347] Re: bump version to 1.11 in ubuntu 15.04?

2015-10-28 Thread Nigel Stewart
I'm the upstream maintainer of GLEW, my comment is that although a lot
of packages depend on GLEW, the vast majority of changes are fully
backwards compatible. 1.11.0 is itself nearly one year old and is two
versions behind. Fortunately for me I'm not having too much traffic
about obsolete bugs, but it's fairly discouraging to see such a delay
between fresh new OpenGL functionality and widespread availability to
GLEW-based apps. I do think it would be good to see something newer
than 1.10.0 show up in Ubuntu 16.04

[Bug 365229] Re: undefined symbol: __cxa_guard_acquire

2010-07-05 Thread Nigel Stewart
This was a bug in Nvidia-built libCgGL.so binaries in versions
Cg-2.0_May2008 (2.0.0015), Cg-2.1_August2008 (2.1.0009),
and Cg-2.1_October2008 (2.1.0012).

It should not be an issue in the current release versions of Cg
2.1, 2.2 or 3.0. A subsequent release of Cg 2.0 is unlikely ---
the advice from Nvidia as of July 2010 is to migrate to Cg 2.2 or 3.0.

I recommend that this bug be closed as obsolete.

It's only a Debian or Ubuntu bug in the sense that more recent
releases of Cg ought to be used than those affected by this bug.
(Intrepid and Januty use 2.0.0015)

Each new release is backwards compatible.

For further discussion also available is the Cg Developer Zone forum:

[Bug 524740] Re: Package fails to install due to files missing on Nvidia website

2010-09-12 Thread Nigel Stewart
The current release of Cg is 3.0.0007
http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cg_download.html

With 3.0.0007 we added 32-bit and 64-bit .deb packages.
Cg 3.0 is compatible with applications developed against Cg 2.1 and Cg 2.2.
