[Bug 253343] [NEW] 'auto away' not always working correctly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pidgin I use latest pidgin only ( getting it updated till date through synaptic on gutsy gibbon ) After setting the 'minutes before changing status', I could verify the status becoming 'away', but when I lock the machine in the night (nobody disturbs the keyboard or mouse), the status becomes 'Available', misleading everybody. [Bug 225125] Re: /etc/ssl/private/ssl-cert-snakeoil.key is world readable
Hello Am trying to install openbravoERP (it needs postgresql) on Kubuntu 8.4. Through adept manager, I installed postgresql 8.3. Initially it would not recognise postgres as a user - following tips on the internet I had to change the following line in the folder /etc/postgres/8.3/main and in file pg_hba.conf - replaced the line 'local all all ident sameuser' with 'local all all md5' Though the K Menu ->SystemServices->Advanced->SystemServices I notice that though postgres is part of the init.d script to start automatically on boot, it is not running. When I try to restart it, I get the following message: * Starting PostgreSQL 8.3 database server * The PostgreSQL server failed to start. [Bug 65027] Re: Notebooks freezes after closing lid or pressing some FN key combination
adding to my above comment... The replacement lid.sh only works for shorter periods of time. When the lid is closed for longer periods, the screen is not brought back to life. The fix is to 1. open the lid 2. walk over to another computer and ssh into the laptop 3. type the following line of command vbetool dpms on The laptop screen is brought back to life. You could also blind-type the same commands on your laptop. So it is clear that the commands in the lid.sh script is working. [Bug 176360] [Kubuntu7.10]Adjusting Gamma parameter in system->display settings messes up the xorg.conf. Display defaults to lowest resolution on rebooting
Public bug reported: Hello I had this problem several times and went through the various bug reports.brin I guess this bug has been reported fixed but then I wish to share my workaround -- will that help localizing the problem? System: Acer Aspire 4710N (Intel core2duo 2GB RAM 160 GB HDD etc) Kubuntu 7.10 The LCD screen was too bright and there was no way to reduce the brightness of screen. So I went and tried reducing the gamma parameter (from 1+ to under 0.5 using the slider button). Brightness got reduced. My resolution was: 1024 x 768. I saved the changed settings (ie., exited the systemsettings program) On the next boot of the laptop, the screen resolution defaulted to 640x480. When I looked up K->system->display settings, the only screen resolution available was 600x480. Even krandrtray would show only option of 640x480 resolution. I then looked up /etc/X11/xorg.conf and found the monitor and screen sections changed. The xorg.conf has been overwritten. The autogenerated xorg.conf (relevent section) is: Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" Vendorname "Plug 'n' Play" Modelname "Plug 'n' Play" modeline "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" 25.2 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -vsync -hsync Gamma 0.5 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller" Monitor "Generic Monitor" Defaultdepth24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Virtual 640 480 Modes "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" EndSubSection EndSection === Then I had to edit out certain lines and introduce new ones - the operational xorg.conf (relevant sections) is: === Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" ModeLine "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" 65.0 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync Gamma 0.5 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller" Monitor "Generic Monitor" Defaultdepth24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" EndSubSection EndSection === Initially I used to edit the xorg.conf, restart the x-server. But on login, it used to revert back to the earlier screen resolution 640x480. Then when I went into k->system-settings->display, then the slider menu (which earlier showed a single point slider scale of 640x480) would now show a proper slider scale (with current setting at 640x480). Then I used to move the slider to desired level and apply. I would get the desired screen resolution. I then found that I had to do this above sequence everytime I booted my laptop - it used to revert back to 640x480. The workaround I discovered was when I completed the above sequence, exited system-settings., then edited the xorg.conf to deleted the lines except those below (a guesswork). === Section "Monitor" Identifier "Generic Monitor" Gamma 0.5 EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Device "Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller" Monitor "Generic Monitor" Defaultdepth24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" EndSubSection EndSection === And then I added: ModeLine "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" 65.0 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync to the Section "Monitor" the well as 'Modes"1024x768" ' to the Section Screen This stabilized the xorg.conf and the resolution problem. Now when I boot my system it comes up with the right resolution 1024x768. My questions: a) Is this a problem with KDE's monitor&display settings utility? why is it flaky? b) why was so many xorg.confs getting generated (The above was very repeatable). c) What makes the xorg.conf complete? (My working versions are incomplete but some default values not in xorg.conf gives me the satisfactory resolution settings). My work seems a perfect hack. d) what is the way to reduce the brightness of the screen apart from playing with gamma parameter? e) My expectation - if I play with k->systemsettings->monitor-displaysettings parameters, I should be able to get back my original settings without xorg.conf getting mauled off from its initial installation version. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Kubuntu7.10]Adjusting Gamma parameter in system->display settings messes up the xorg.conf. [Bug 72134] home folder is not created when a new user is created through users-admin
Public bug reported: Opened users-admin in a freshly installed edgy system and created a new user and closed the dialog. Everything seemed to go fine. No errors. But when I tried to login as the new user through gdm, an error was reported saying that the home folder for the user does n't exist. I opened /home and there was no folder for the new user. I then used deluser to delete the newly created user and then issued an adduser command. Everything went fine, the home folder got created and I was able to login as the new user. I decided to try this out in a few other systems around here and what I found was surprising. Breezy - free from this bug a freshly installed Dapper - has this bug an updated Dapper - free from this bug a freshly installed Edgy - has this bug ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- home folder is not created when a new user is created through users-admin https://launchpad.net/bugs/72134 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 489453] [NEW] laptop internal speakers not working, however external speaker/headphone works
Public bug reported: The problem is with the internal speakers of HP dv6000t which never works right from the boot. I run Karmic with kernel 2.6.31-15-generic, with conexant cx-20549 driver. The hardware should be good enough. I never had problem with this speakers for the past 3 years on ubuntu. Kernel update or alsa update happened 3 or 4 months back caused all the problems. I'll do an apport collect for this bug to update all specific data. ( I had many sleepless days & nights to solve this with alternates to alsa and also older versions of alsa and ended up without anything :( very related bugs to this are Bug #269027, but the solutions on them never worked for me . . . hoping to hear the login drums on my internal speakers soon :( ) ProblemType: Bug Architecture: i386 AudioDevicesInUse: USERPID ACCESS COMMAND /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: mohan 1785 F...m pulseaudio /dev/snd/controlC0: mohan 1785 F pulseaudio CRDA: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory Card0.Amixer.info: Card hw:0 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0xd824 irq 22' Mixer name : 'Conexant CX20549 (Venice)' Components : 'HDA:14f15045,103c30bb,00100100' Controls : 18 Simple ctrls : 8 CheckboxSubmission: 56f3a217086558717a0e686f138ab716 CheckboxSystem: e704f33cc0866ff0f0256a33de39ea1c Date: Sat Nov 28 09:51:07 2009 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10 HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=e10cda76-218e-4bdf-afff-065b9ae7c5f5 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic Koala" - Release i386 (20091028.5) Lsusb: Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub MachineType: Hewlett-Packard HP Pavilion dv6000 (EY799AV#ABA) NonfreeKernelModules: wl Package: linux-image-2.6.31-15-generic 2.6.31-15.50 [modified: lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/mpu401/snd-mpu401-uart.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/mpu401/snd-mpu401.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/opl3/snd-opl3-lib.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/opl3/snd-opl3-synth.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/opl4/snd-opl4-lib.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/opl4/snd-opl4-synth.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/pcsp/snd-pcsp.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/snd-dummy.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/snd-mtpav.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/snd-mts64.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/snd-portman2x4.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/snd-serial-u16550.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/snd-virmidi.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/drivers/vx/snd-vx-lib.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/i2c/other/snd-ak4114.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/i2c/other/snd-ak4117.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/i2c/other/snd-ak4xxx-adda.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/i2c/other/snd-pt2258.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/i2c/other/snd-tea575x-tuner.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/i2c/snd-cs8427.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/i2c/snd-i2c.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/i2c/snd-tea6330t.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/ad1816a/snd-ad1816a.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/ad1848/snd-ad1848.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4231.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/cs423x/snd-cs4236.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688-lib.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/es1688/snd-es1688.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/gus/snd-gus-lib.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/gus/snd-gusclassic.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/gus/snd-gusextreme.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/gus/snd-gusmax.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/gus/snd-interwave-stb.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/gus/snd-interwave.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/msnd/snd-msnd-classic.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/msnd/snd-msnd-lib.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/msnd/snd-msnd-pinnacle.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/opti9xx/snd-miro.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/opti9xx/snd-opti92x-ad1848.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/opti9xx/snd-opti92x-cs4231.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/opti9xx/snd-opti93x.ko lib/modules/2.6.31-15-generic/kernel/sound/isa/sb/snd-emu8000-synth.ko

[Bug 479187] [NEW] Synaptic Update app crashed while attempting first update after upgrade to Ubuntu v9.10
Public bug reported: Recently upgraded from Ubuntu v8.10 NBR to v9.10 using Update Manager - update appeared to work successfully. After upgrade, machine ran fine for ~1 week and then prompted that updates were available. I reviewed and approved the updates to be applied and Update Manager started the installation process. A red balloon icon with an '!' in it appears up on the menu/status bar near the clock. Clicking it notified me that a crash had been detected - did I want to report it. I chose to report, it collected some data and then notified me that it could not report the crash because some packages (~10) including avahi..., x11-common and others were out of date and I could not submit the crash report. Most, if not all of these out-of- date packages were the same that were in my to-update list. Was prompted to submit a crash report again (from the failure to submit a crash report?) and chose to submit again and was successfully was able to submit this report. I also received a message that a kernel crash has occurred and that my system is likely unstable and must be rebooted. I intend to do this and attempt to run these updates again. If successful I will update (and likely close) this bug. Please let me know what other information would be helpful. The output of ubuntu-bug should be included with this report - since it appeared to run correctly and got me to this page - nonetheless, I'm including the Thank you ProblemType: KernelOops Annotation: Your system might become unstable now and might need to be restarted. [Bug 958418] [NEW] unity alt+tab graphics could be more intuitive
Public bug reported: unity alt+tab shows a pop up of all applications currently running All the applications are bordered with its own color. At times the colors of some application seems to be the same and choosing one application with continuous alt+tab strokes makes it really difficult to understand which application is currently highlighted ! Though the currently selected application's name is shown and it is bright lighted, which can be taken as a hint ( that this is the current selected app ), but * providing all apps without borders and dim colors * displaying only the selected app bright, bordered and highlighted would easily give a visual clue that that specific app is selected * may be that app's icon size could be made bigger ( it may not mean copying mac launcher, but still its intuitive ) In the attachment, I have tried to alt+tab from firefox (aurora) to a terminal. terminal is already light colored and all app are bordered. Except for the word 'Terminal', the visual clue is really bad to understand which app is selected. I have many times failed to understand this and ended up in wrong app and would carefully see to go to the right one ps: ubuntu brainstorm has a similar request, but a bug is requested by them at the end of the page, but no bug seems to be available [ http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/28858/ says as If highlighting is not effective, please file a bug report. * Is this reproducible? - yes, it is reproducible. * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug? - Create two users. user1, user2 - set 'Log in as user1 automatically', set 'Allow 5 seconds for anyone. . . ' in System -> Administrator -> Login Screen - set 'password not asked on logon' to user2 in System -> Administrator -> Users & - When machine has booted up ( only for the first time ), select user2 ( Now the machine tries to login to user2, but then returns back to the login screen ) - select user2 again ( Now login is successful ) This problem doesn't occur for subsequent logins. * How do you configure an user to not require a password to login? 3rd bullet in the above answer.
