2018-11-26 Thread Mike Salvatore
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1801666] Re: FTBFS in Bionic - seems due to newer wireshark

2018-11-09 Thread Mike Salvatore
Hi Balint,

As new CVEs have been discovered against Wireshark 2.6.3, it seems that
backporting wireshark 2.6.4 would kill two birds with 1 stone: fix the
libvirt build, resolve CVEs. You mentioned backporting to Bionic and
Xenial, can it also be backported to Trusty?

[Bug 1823528] Re: when i start my system there is a dialogue box contains report problem or cancel

2019-04-08 Thread Mike Salvatore
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1823518] Re: cryfs (& encfs) not prohibited in /etc/updatedb.conf so filenames indexed & visible

2019-04-11 Thread Mike Salvatore
I think some solution here is needed. There are a lot of encrypted
filesystems, and I don't think the /etc/updatedb.conf file should be a
curated list of those. Given that both CryFS and EncFS are packaged in
Ubuntu, I think it's reasonable that they should be in covered by
/etc/updatedb.conf.

[Bug 1862208] [NEW] Remove moodle from Focal 20.04

2020-02-06 Thread Mike Salvatore
Public bug reported:

Moodle in 18.04 and later does not work at all. The bug discussed in [1]
manifests as a result of moodle 3.0.3 requiring php5.4.x, php5.5.x, or
php7.0.x. PHP7.2 and later are available in ubuntu 18.04 and later, but
these version of PHP are not compatible with moodle 3.0.3 [2].

The moodle package has been removed from the debian archive as of
2017-10-09. The only reverse dependency of moodle is jclicmoodle, which
is a moodle plugin that was also removed from the debian archive.

I am recommending that:

1) moodle and jclicmoodle be removed from the ubuntu archive for focal 20.04
and later
2) we consider replacing moodle and jclicmoodle with a empty packages for 18.04
and later.

[Bug 1852907] Re: booting problem

2019-11-19 Thread Mike Salvatore
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 1845596] Re: mstraliamar

2019-09-27 Thread Mike Salvatore
Thank you for using Ubuntu and taking the time to report a bug. Your
report should contain, at a minimum, the following information so we can
better find the source of the bug and work to resolve it.

Submitting the bug about the proper source package is essential. For
help see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . Additionally,
in the report please include:

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'cat /etc/lsb-release' or System ->
About Ubuntu.
2) The version of the package you are using, via 'dpkg -l PKGNAME | cat' or by
checking in Synaptic.
3) What happened and what you expected to happen.

The Ubuntu community has also created debugging procedures for a wide
variety of packages at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures .
Following the debugging instructions for the affected package will make
your bug report much more complete. Thanks!

[Bug 1783317] Re: [MIR] sshfs-fuse

2019-01-10 Thread Mike Salvatore
I reviewed sshfs-fuse version 2.10+repack-2 as checked into disco. This should
not be considered a full security audit, but rather a quick gauge of
maintainability.

- sshfs is a fuse file system that allows you to mount a remote filesystem using
  SFTP.

- There are no prior CVEs against sshfs.

- sshfs daemonizes by calling fuse_daemonize()

- Build Depends: debhepler, libglib2.0-dev, libfuse-dev, pkg-config, meson,
  python3, python3-pytest

- no initscripts

- no dbus services

- no setuid files

- no sudo fragments

- no udev rules

- There is a test suite; it is not run during the build. I recommend some
autopkg tests be written that run the test suite.
While the test suite omits a few important file system functions. It is
  reasonably complete.

- no cronjobs

- Logging functions are careful when using fprintf

- The code was generally defensive and took proactive steps to avoid security
  vulnerabilities.

- Memory management is careful; allocated memory is quickly freed when it is
no longer needed. Bounds are checked before allocating or copying memory.

- Leverages SSH for cryptographic needs

- The project seems well maintained. Point releases or minor versions are
released every few months. There are many years between major version upgrades,
indicating that backporting fixes may be feasible over the life of an Ubuntu
 LTS release.

- Hardening flags were enabled at compile time

- 2.10 is the latest on the 2.x branch (Aug 2017), however 3.5.1 is the latest
release. I recommend we update to the latest version.

- A few warnings were issued during build. An issue has been submitted to the
upstream developers on github.com regarding the warning in sshfs.c.
meson.build:42: WARNING: The variable(s) 'UNMOUNT_COMMAND' in the input
file 'sshfs.1.in' are not present in the given configuration data.
WARNING: Project targetting '>= 0.38' but tried to use feature introduced
in '0.40.0': build_by_default arg in custom_target
WARNING: Project specifies a minimum meson_version '>= 0.38' but uses
features which were added in newer versions:
../sshfs.c:1385:44: warning: cast between incompatible function types from
‘int (*)(void *, struct request *)’ to ‘gboolean (*)(void *, void *, void *)’
{aka ‘int (*)(void *, void *, void *)’} [-Wcast-function-type]

- The sshfs.randseed variable is initialized using time(0). An attacker could
potentially guess the random seed based on the time that the sshfs process
was started and and therefore create files in /tmp/ that would lead to a
DoS. The risk and impact of this is very low.

- does not use WebKit

- does not use PolicyKit

- does not use Javascript

Security team ACK for promoting sshfs-fuse to main.

[Bug 1890466] [NEW] Restrictive umask creates unusable snaps

2020-08-05 Thread Mike Salvatore
Public bug reported:

OS
Ubuntu Focal Fossa 20.04

Snapcraft Version
snapcraft, version 4.1.3

Contrary to the status of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/snapcraft/+bug/1724788, not all umask
issues are fixed.

In general, I set my umask to 027 on my systems. When `snapcraft init`
is run, it creates ./snap/ and ./snap/snapcraft.yaml with 750
permissions and 640 permission respectively; this is consistent with my
umask. These permissions are carried into the snap, however, and the
result is the following error message:

cannot snap-exec: cannot exec "/snap/testme/x1/snap/command-chain
/snapcraft-runner": permission denied

The current workaround is to fix the permissions of ./snap and
./snap/snapcraft.yaml so that they are accessible by other and run
`snapcraft clean` followed by `snapcraft`

Below is a terminal session that demonstrates the issue:

[testuser@test ~/test1]$ umask

I haven't yet tried to reproduce it. It also works fine for me. My only
guess at this point is there's some difference between a machine that
has been upgrade to focal and a machine that has a freshly installed
focal.

[Bug 1901606] Re: security update broke module import in libpam-python, "from httplib2 import Http" fails now

2020-10-27 Thread Mike Salvatore
The issue occurs because the patch sets Py_NoUserSiteDirectory. I'm
currently looking into a fix.

For a temporary workaround, you can `sudo apt install libpam-
python=1.0.4-1` and then pin the package version by following the steps
here: https://serverfault.com/questions/435132/how-to-version-lock-
packages-in-ubuntu

Please note that reverting to 1.0.4-1 will leave you vulnerable to
CVE-2019-16729 (https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-
security/cve/2019/CVE-2019-16729.html), and pinning the package will
prevent any future security updates or bug fixes from being installed on
your system.

[Bug 1901606] Re: security update broke module import in libpam-python, "from httplib2 import Http" fails now

2020-10-28 Thread Mike Salvatore
This issue has been resolved in the following Ubuntu releases:

xenial: 1.0.4-1.1+deb8u1ubuntu0.1
bionic: 1.0.6-1.1+deb10u1ubuntu0.1

Please note that the version of pam-python in focal and groovy (1.0.7-1ubuntu1)
will still prevent loading 3rd party python modules from site-specific paths.
This behavior is consistent with the upstream 1.0.7-1 version of pam-python.
