[Bug 369138] [NEW] Xorg freezes on Voodoo3 at 1440x900

2009-04-29 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-tdfx

With jaunty, xserver-xorg-video-tdfx (1:1.4.0-2) freezes Xorg from
xserver-xorg-core (2:1.6.0-0ubuntu14) on first full screen window draw
at resolution 1440x900 on a Voodoo3 3000 card (16Mb) unless NoAccel
(xorg.conf) has been set for its device driver. Without NoAccel and
although DRI, DRI2 and direct rendering become automatically disabled
(according to log), Xorg seems to freeze by using its DGA extension
(unconfirmed).

With intrepid, xserver-xorg-video-tdfx (1:1.4.0-1build2), which did not
receive much modification for jaunty, ran on xserver-xorg-core
(2:1.5.2-2ubuntu3) effortlessly as soon as DRI and direct rendering
became automatically disabled.

Attached is a log snippet of ltrace on blackbox (wm) crashing Xorg (its
log remains silent) with first full screen window draws.

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-tdfx (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 566103] Re: blank screen and complete lockup when X starts on Intel 855GM Chipset

2010-04-20 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
- i915.modeset=1 fixes KMS, kernel log clean, no problems

- X.org intel driver automatically disables DRI, (WW) me about i845/855
hardware. How do I persuade him to play it risky? (Quite a lot of DRI
things were stable in karmic.)

- plymouth seems to not get through, no visible output but cursor, just
init telling me in daemon log that plymouth-stop pre-start process
terminated with status 1. Will file another report against that.

- issue remains in current lucid
- issue remains in upstream 2.6.34-999.201004291005

- apport data is of current lucid
- attached syslog is of upstream kernel

- still same symptoms as with karmic

- remedied by re-inserting via_rhine
- remedied by /etc/pm/config.d/00suspend_modules: SUSPEND_MODULES="via_rhine"

[Bug 566103] [NEW] blank screen and complete lockup when X starts on Intel 855GM Chipset

2010-04-18 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Happens with lucid default kernel 2.6.32-21-generic, need to start
failsafeX there.

Using old karmic default kernel 2.6.31-20-generic, X starts but refrains
using DRI which it did on karmic.

Might be due to kernel module i915?

So, besides the lockup, how to tell the X driver not to disable DRI?
(Also lucid kernel deactivates kernel modesetting for i915.)

[Bug 566090] Re: broken sound: ratelimit.c is suppressing lots of sound events

2010-05-19 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Did so and symptom remains. But it does not suppress for anything
anymore.

For every session login or logout event sound, pulseaudio suppresses about 20
events.
For every first start of a busy spd-say probably per session, pulseaudio gives
me up to 560 suppressed events while sound cracks noticeably.
For repeated operations seemingly no suppressions take place anymore.

I don't know if that relates, but after beginning screen darkening while
idle in some specific javaws application playing a voice stream, sound
becomes and remains reproducibly cracky too until restart of that app.
In this case nothing is in the logs.

[Bug 566090] Re: broken sound: ratelimit.c is suppressing lots of sound events

2010-05-20 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Gave tsched=0 to both auto loading modules in default.pa. Result was
there were no rate limited events anymore but jittery playback for
events in question until parameter was reversed and system rebooted.

[Bug 684694] [NEW] [855GM] i915 kernel bug: casual (gpu) lockup on acpid client change

2010-12-03 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Public bug reported:

XOrg intel driver has been manually re-enabled on this system.

System runs stable aside from mentioned "kernel BUG".

syslog always tells acpid client change has taken place around (gpu)
lockup -- see attachment.

Lockup has been a regression since maverick release and is not
reproducible.

Has happened so far only during graphical user login/logout/switch
operations once every few days.

[Bug 659846] [NEW] java (webstart) applet fails to emit sound

2010-10-13 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Public bug reported:

KGS cgoban3 client remains silent on my box after release upgrade from
10.04 to .10.

I was used to this error when other programs such as firefox showed via
sound preferences -> applications they were using some (which? --
libasound?) sound resource. Shutting down those programs sound resource
claims remedied the situation. Now, even on an empty applications list
and on a xterm-only-session, Java refuses to emit sounds. This is true
for both now Sun's and OpenJDK's flavor.

Sounds in general and via aplay work as expected.

[Bug 659864] [NEW] box periodically freezes up for a snippet of time

2010-10-13 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Public bug reported:

USB mouse gestures, keypress events, graphical as well as audible output
is seemingly periodically interrupted for a short fraction of a second.
With default gnome keyboard speed and delay, interruption happens about
every 290 letters.

Interruptions occur also when booted with init=/bin/bash.

This is the case since I did a release upgrade from 10.04 running
default kernel (2.6.32-25-generic, I guess) to 10.10
(2.6.35-22-generic). MainlineBuild is to be tested.

Oracle's Java Sound Demo works, therefore it seems to be an application

maybe a deprecated one?

[Bug 659354] [NEW] fails to clarify deps problem on installation of openjdk-6-jre

2010-10-12 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

software-center mysteriously fails on installation of openjdk-6-jre
complaining about some dependency problems while giving no real clue on
their cause via details but the aforementioned package name.

In this case, tzdata-java is the culprit being too old against new
tzdata update. aptitude's resolver is able to clarify this. Being
clueless, I first removed sun-java6-jre... -- precise error messages are
a good thing!

any sounds.

This problem was known to me in 10.04 when sound preferences ->
applications showed some program/s was/were using "this" sound
interface. Now, even after a reboot in an xterm-only-session, my javaws
app fails to produce any sound.

Is there a way to see why and by whom libasound is blocked?

[Bug 567249] Re: plymouth splash screen fails for Intel 855GM Chipset

2010-08-21 Thread Martin F . Weißenborn
Problem can be fixed by giving initramfs-tools the order of setting
bootarg FRAMEBUFFER to yes by creating

/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash with content "FRAMEBUFFER=yes" and
updating the initial ramdisk by entering

sudo update-initramfs -u.

--

This will create a ramdisk where plymouth and utilities aren't missing.
See attached diff.txt for what is created without this bootarg when
building a ramdisk on my box the default way. This shouldn't be the
case, I think!
