[Bug 357732] Re: cups always prints with the default page size

2009-04-28 Thread Marius Vasilescu
I've just updated, I can confirm that it worked from evince & openoffice
writer. Now system-config-printer overrides the default /etc/papersize
setting.

I did some testing, maybe this helps for debugging. I tried changing the
bios settings for HDD Acoustic Mode to all three options ("bypass",
"quiet", "performance"), but it didn't seem to make any difference, the
cycle count kept increasing. I've tried to suspend my session, but after
resuming the clicking was still present. After hdparm -B 254, the
clicking stopped for good :)

[Bug 564572] [NEW] no image when booting with GeForce 8400M

2010-04-16 Thread Marius Vasilescu
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Lucid Beta2 (live CD) / Dell Inspiron 1520 / GeForce 8400M GS

After choosing the 'Try Ubuntu without changes on the system', I got for
1-2 seconds a black screen terminal (only the cursor was visible), after
that a weird screen and finally sort of a grey screen. I've attached the
last two screen images.

It switched between terminals, but the display didn't change at all. For
instance, ctrl+alt+f2, "sudo reboot", enter, enter = reboots the system.
I found it odd since I thought the terminals didn't use the noveau
driver.

"blacklist=vga16fb nouveau.noaccel=1" params didn't work for me. I
couldn't manage to find any workaround..

** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 542950] Re: Screen corruption on startup

2010-03-23 Thread Marius Vasilescu
Lucid Beta1 (live CD) / Dell Inspiron 1520 / GeForce 8400M GS

"blacklist=vga16fb nouveau.noaccel=1" params didn't work for me,
actually it did not change a thing.

After choosing the 'Try Ubuntu without changes on the system', the
keyboard stopped responding (not even the caps lock key worked). First,
I got for 1-2 seconds a black screen terminal (only the cursor was
visible), after which a weird screen and finally sort of a grey screen.
I've attached the last two screen images.

I'm sorry, I did some more testing and the keyboard worked. It switched
between terminals, but the display didn't show it. For instance,
ctrl+alt+f2, "sudo reboot", enter, enter = reboots the system. I was
mislead by the fact that caps lock LED didn't work after switching with
ctrl+alt+f2 (num lock & scroll lock LEDs work).

[Bug 310035] Re: ADSL connection dropping when using Deluge or Transmission

2009-08-29 Thread Marius Vasilescu
I'm having the same problem, my ADSL connection drops when uploading at
full speed over pppoe (including torrents). Downloading works fine and
the connection never drops, while on Windows both downloading /
uploading work fine. The difference I've noticed between Windows &
Ubuntu 9.04 was the upload speed. While on Windows was about 1.5MB/s, on
Ubuntu it was about 4-5 MB/s (till the connection dropped, at most 2-3
minutes).

I've tried changing MTU & MRU from 1492 to 1400 for ppp0, disabling
multicast for ppp0 & eth0 - the issue still occured. After many hours, I
found quite a strange solution, since eth0 has auto-negotiation and it
seems to work well (it finds a 100Mb/s full-duplex connection). However,
this solved the issue: "sudo ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off speed 100
duplex full". So, "ethtool eth0" shows me the same configuration when
using autoneg on / off, but when it's off the upload speed is limited to
about 1.5MB/s as in Windows and it doesn't disconnect.

On the other issue, my Network Manager reconnects itself, but you have
to check if the ADSL connection has the auto-reconnect checkbox checked.
I have two connections, the dhcp which is not checked to reconnect and
the ADSL one which is checked. Look in the configuration files:
"/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/*" for "autoconnect=true"

[Bug 747338] [NEW] LiveCD should have a "safe graphics" option

2011-04-01 Thread Marius Vasilescu
Public bug reported:

Especially on nVidia cards, the default nouveau driver may not work and
the user would have to add a nouveau fake parameter at boot options in
order to crash the driver. It would be much better, especially for
unexperienced Ubuntu users, to have an easy option to boot with safe
graphics. For instance I filled the nouveau bug #564572 on april 2010
and it hasn't been fixed. A new Ubuntu user would probably just give up
because it doesn't work. The live session should either have a "safe
graphics" or an automatic blacklist of nouveau for a certain graphic
cards that have known critical bugs.

Oh, wait, you installed just one deb file. Maybe that's why :) You have
to install 3 files.

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/

linux-headers-2.6.38-999_2.6.38-999.201103291240_all.deb
And for i386 (for amd64 the other 2 instead of those):
linux-headers-2.6.38-999-generic_2.6.38-999.201103291240_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.38-999-generic_2.6.38-999.201103291240_i386.deb

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

Anyway, I did the test so I don't think it's still necessary to do it
too.

Those previous files are the logs from my failed installation. It showed
the following message "Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is
a fatal error." @jtlb: Was this the error you encountered too?

But sometimes it does finish the installing process without error, but
after booting "couldn't find the chunk descriptor". And it gets even
more weird as after removing the usb memory stick and rebooting it
didn't show any error but just grub (without grub menu).

But, I think my issues have already been already reported on bug 732149.

2011-03-25 Thread Marius Vasilescu
I can confirm this for Natty (daily image 2011-03-25).

I've did this (write in terminal):
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Change this line:
"deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 11.04 _Natty Narwhal_ - Alpha i386 (20110325)]/ natty main
restricted"
to:
"deb cdrom:/ natty main restricted"

2011-03-25 Thread Marius Vasilescu
Rob,

Even if you use a usb-stick the live sesion would create a virtual
/cdrom. Did you use Ubuntu 11.04 or 10.10? Maybe it would help if you
would attach to the bug report the /var/log/syslog file.

Please ignore my previous comment. I think my bug might be different
though.

In my syslog of the live session, after doing the installation, there
was something like this:

Mar 25 15:26:02 ubuntu apt-setup: W: Skipping nonexistent file
/cdrom/dists/natty/main/binary-i386/Packages
Mar 25 15:26:02 ubuntu apt-setup: W: Skipping nonexistent file
/cdrom/dists/natty/restricted/binary-i386/Packages
(other related errors)

[Bug 741962] Re: install crashes after downloading updates

2011-03-25 Thread Marius Vasilescu
The live CD image is supposed to work on USB sticks too. I've looked
into your syslog and I can say that my installation crashed just after
the nvidia warnings too.

In my bug (I've marked my bug as a duplicate) there are two syslog files
attached for the installation with/without updates (crash/no crash).

I don't have an empty CD, so I can't confirm that it works with the
updates from a live CD.

If you have an Internet connection on the live session, *after* the
installer crashes, you can easily send the files by running this command
"apport-collect 741217" (ALT+F2 to type it). More about bug reporting:

Nope, it doesn't happen anymore in Natty. I don't know if it was
resolved in Maverick because before upgrading to Natty I used an old
nvidia driver. I will mark this "fix released".

2011-04-27 Thread Marius Vasilescu
Thanks, Gabriel. It's a much better solution. You can also lock the
version it in synaptic, so it doesn't update with the regular updates. I
think the driver should be reverted to the old version until this bug is
solved.

[Bug 732677] Re: bcmwl 5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu2 not work on BCM4311

2011-04-27 Thread Marius Vasilescu
I tried upgrading to the new driver and issued:
$ rmmod b44
$ rmmod ssb
$ rmmod wl
$ modprobe wl

- No errors, but wl didn't work.

Then I removed the driver, installed the old one and issued the exact
command sequence as above. It worked.

My blacklist-bcm43.conf wasn't modified when upgrading the driver and it
did contain the two lines Daniel was talking about.

Daniel, the solution from #17 doesn't work either. I guess generating

[Bug 564572] Re: no image when booting with GeForce 8400M

2011-04-16 Thread Marius Vasilescu
A simple solution to this bug has been posted on nouveau's bug tracker.
Maybe it could be included in the final release?

Using one of the two options "nouveau.uscript_lvds=0x0100" or
"nouveau.uscript_lvds=0x0300" solves this problem.

[Bug 667280] [NEW] Changing workspaces crashes video driver

2010-10-27 Thread Marius Vasilescu
Public bug reported:

Changing to another workspace causes the visual effects to crash,
probably it crashes the 2D accel. In "Appearance" the effects are
automatically changed from "normal"/"extra" to "none". This didn't
happen in the maverick RC, the issue was introduced by an update.

package: 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 or 260.19.12-0ubuntu1~xup2 (ubuntu-x-swat)
video card: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8400M GS] (rev a1)

Unfortunately, when crashing occurs nothing is written to the /var/log
files.
