[Bug 189814] Re: HAL lockups or crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password

2008-07-02 Thread Mario Limonciello
Can we try to get a concise list of affected platforms? This isn't on
all series of Dell laptops.

I just tested with an XPS1330 (Intel graphics) and wasn't able to
reproduce any hangups when I turned on a BIOS password.

[Bug 189814] Re: HAL lockups/crashes on Dell D-series Latitudes w/ BIOS password

2008-07-02 Thread Mario Limonciello
** Summary changed:

- HAL lockups or crashes dell laptops with a BIOS password
+ HAL lockups/crashes on Dell D-series Latitudes w/ BIOS password

** Description changed:

This description is totally rewritten by Andrea Ratto (LP andrearatto) to
recap the situation. The root cause has been really hard to find as it seemed a
kernel issue related to the touchpad at first.
The problem reported here and its cause have already been confirmed by at
least 5 users.
This bug refers primarily to HAL, but also relates to libsmbios. It is
triggered by gnome-power-manager, but it's not its fault.

  Symptoms:
very frequent temporary lock-ups on input after some inactivity
frequent hard lock-ups with CAPS lock and NUM lock flashing
very frequent loss of synchronization with the touchpad, which then looses
advanced functionalities; with this in dmesg
  [ 804.829840] psmouse.c: GlidePoint at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost
synchronization, throwing 4 bytes away.
[ 807.405427] psmouse.c: resync failed, issuing reconnect request
  [ 810.926845] input: PS/2 Mouse as /devices/virtual/input/input9
  [ 810.973805] input: AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint as
/devices/platform/i8042/serio1/input/input10

  Affected hardware:
- dell laptops with a BIOS password set (probably all/most of them)
+ Latitude D620, D420, D630 with a BIOS password set

  Releases affected
- hardy, intrepid. gusty is not affected.
- Other distro are affected too, e.g. Fedora 9.
+ Hardy & Intrepid
+ Other Distros are affected too, e.g. Fedora 9.

  What is known so far:
gnome-power-manager tries to dim the brightness of the screen after some
inactivity and then reset it upon input.
This is a default setting, so the user has no clue of what might be causing
the issue.
gnome-power-manager calls HAL to do the job. HAL on dell machines, since
hardy, uses libsmbios for brightness setting.

Libsmbios needs the BIOS password even to change the brightness and HAL
has no way to tell it that password, as of now. Some users have also
reported that libsmbios does not work even from the command line
  utility, specifying the pass.

However, instead of just printing an error when it fails, it makes the
computer lock for a few seconds, due to the direct interaction with the
bios on a very low level. The kernel has then problems reading input
events and might crash. These lock-ups should also be avoided in
libsmbios, as that is really ugly. However it needs root privileges and
it's HAL who is calling it again and again when it should not, so the
  lockups are more HAL's fault.

  Testing/repoducing:
1: of course using gnome and gnome-power-manager, setting "Dim display when
idle" to enabled.
Same effects can be achieved by:
2: using the command /usr/sbin/dellLcdBrightness from libsmbios-bin package.
Here's a command that rapidly switch brightness 10 times:
  for x in `seq 1 10`; do sudo dellLcdBrightness -a -v 1;sleep 0.1; sudo
dellLcdBrightness -a -v 5; done
#Warning it may hang your machine
3: the brightness applet of the gnome-panel.

  A possible elegant solution:
  * Correct HAL's detection of brightness setting capability on dell, so that
it only reports it when it can be set with no errors. It might require using
some test method in libsmbios, which I don't know if it is present or has to be
added.
Maybe also add some way for HAL to read the bios password from config files
if the user wishes so. (This is probably somewhat already planned)
Solving the stalling in libsmbios might prevent crashes, but yet HAL would
keep calling it and get errors, so a fix in HAL is needed.
  Less elegant:
turn off HAL's usage of libsmbios in one of its config files and have users
who want it to manually set it.

possible temporary workarounds for users experiencing this:
  - unset the bios password
  - blacklist the dcdbas kernel module
  - disable dimming in gnome-power
  - I don't know how to disable this functionality from HAL, but that would be
the best workaround.

NOTE: if HAL is allowed to use libsmbios a local user could exploit it
to induce a denial of service or crash.

I hope this info proves clear and useful. For anything else just ask.

Eg did you get asked for a root password, and did you skip it or give something.
If you gave something just indicate that you gave a password with alphanumeric
characters, or a password including non alphanumeric characters or no password.

Those that are encountering this, please open your power management
settings and try to uncheck the box to notify with sound in the event of
an error, see if this resolves the loud beeps.

Subject: [Bug 205925] Re: [HARDY] loud noise on resume [XPSM1330]

I have the same problem on a IBM Thinkpad T60.

** Description changed:

I have just updated to hardy and I'm now experiencing a new bug with
suspend feature (in fact when resuming after a suspend to memory). I'm
  using a DELL XPS M1330.

Everytime I resume after a suspend, my speakers are making a loud noise
during a few seconds. Resume works but this sound is really annoying and
loud. This problem appeared in Hardy.

[Bug 252667] [NEW] ubiquity is trying to unmount /cdrom when committing changes to the partition table

2008-07-28 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

This is using intrepid alpha3 booted from a recovery partition.
Ubiquity has been preseeded to use the remaining space on the drive to
install to with a custom recipe.

When trying to commit the changes it complains that it cant' unmount
/cdrom.

To debug where it was trying to unmount from, adding 'exit 0' to the top
of /lib/partman/commit.d/01unmount_busy allows the install to proceed.

RE: [Bug 205925] Re: [HARDY] loud noise on resume [XPSM1330]

2008-07-28 Thread Mario Limonciello
What this sound means is that it failed to suspend or resume one or more
times (but not necessarily continued to fail - it might have already
been successful in the end).

I think it's a useful debugging option for debugging "long" suspend or
resume times, but otherwise I agree it doesn't make sense to keep in
there enabled.

[Bug 243504] Re: mythtv-setup: unable to connect to database

So in solving this:

superm1> kirkland, well so what it needs to do is first try no password, and
then if it needs to (and has the ability to, say when you are in a
non-noninteractive debconf frontend) ask the password question
and if the password question fails, keep at it until the person
aborts or puts the right password
... and if fails - leave the package in unconfigured state
it's important that only happens in interactive debconf frontends
though... otherwise the livefs will definitely have broken mythbuntu installs

[Bug 299194] [NEW] eject key doesn't work when disks are mounted

2008-11-17 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

It appears that machines that have a software eject key are not able to
eject disks from gnome. In evaluating the cause of the problem, a lot
of possible indicators show up. At a first glance it seems to be an X
bug because pressing the key mapped to XF86Eject shows this output in
xev:

 state 0x0, keycode 170 (keysym 0x1008ff2c, XF86Eject),
same_screen YES,
 XKeysymToKeycode returns keycode: 169

This is actually the intended behavior though because there are indeed two
keysyms that match:
 key  { [   XF86Eject ] };
 key  { [   XF86Eject,   XF86Eject ] };

There are two keysyms that match because the kernel supports two different
eject keys that act very similarly:
correspond to the following in the kernel:
 #define KEY_EJECTCD 161
 #define KEY_EJECTCLOSECD162

Gnome-settings-daemon gets confused then because the keycode you press
in X is not the keycode it is expecting since it uses XKeysymToKeycode.

This package is not pulling in the right headers from it's depends.
You'll need something that pulls in linux-headers-generic | linux-
headers I believe.

Have you tested this DKMS build on a standard desktop install? I've
only been testing it in a chroot, so I may be a corner case:

[Bug 224009] Re: lircd.conf not working with include

I'm going to submit a backported lirc with the final include support.
Once that's done, see if that resolves the issue.

[Bug 297245] Re: Dell Studio 15 Doesn't Boot, White Screen of Death

2008-11-18 Thread Mario Limonciello
Canonical in the US and Taiwan have been working with the Dell
Linux Engineering team and the individual factories producing
this model to identify a root cause and fix to this issue since
   your raised it with us.
It appears to be specific to a batch of machines although
without a definitive root cause we are not ruling other
   scenarios out.

Your continued assistance in the issue is appreciated - there
are very significant efforts that go into making sure that
Ubuntu works excellently on Dell hardware and we are keen to
understand what went wrong here both specifically and in the
   general process.

   Thank you for your assistance.
