[Bug 320787] Re: package openoffice.org-voikko 2.1-1build2 failed to install/upgrade:

I'm having the exact same problem. Just got my Ubuntu Dell desktop today
and did the upgrade. Now, the upgrade is aborting. It also would not
install openoffice.org-core or update-manager, which I've reported as
separate bugs.

[Bug 322073] Re: package openoffice.org-core None failed to install/upgrade:

2009-01-28 Thread Luther
I've already done a clean install of 8.10, so I don't think I'll be able
to do any testing.

Someone suggested that the problem may have been caused by not doing the
updates before the upgrade. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org-
voikko/+bug/320787/comments/3.

[Bug 320787] Re: package openoffice.org-voikko 2.1-1build2 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-01-28 Thread Luther
I believe it was installed by default. During the upgrade, I noticed the
installer spent a lot of time working with a lot of different language
packs. If I'm not mistaken, a CD install of Ubuntu usually deletes those
language packs.

I did not do the updates first. I thought it would save time, since I'd
be downloading almost all the same packages again for the upgrade. If
that's not supported, maybe the update manager should require all
updates to be done first. Upgrading is pretty self-explanatory in other
respects, so I never would've thought to look at the documentation.

[Bug 312346] [NEW] Shared directory doesn't become availible on network on startup

2008-12-29 Thread Luther
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10

Package:
I don't know if this is a Gnome problem, but I'm using Gnome 2.24.1. apt-cache
and Synaptic both claim that Gnome is not installed, whatever that means.

I used the file browser to make my ~/Public directory available through
the router to my roommate's computer, which also runs Ubuntu 8.10. When
I first set it up, I was able to upload a file to his computer.

Expectation:
Any time my computer is on, the directory should automatically be available on
the network.

What actually happened:
If I restart my computer, the directory is no longer on the network. When I go
to Places>Home Folder, the Public directory no longer shows the hand icon in
the upper right corner. I right-click on it and choose Sharing Options. The
"Share this folder" box is still checked.

Workaround:
If turn off sharing for that folder, then turn it back on again, it seems to
work normally.

I would guess it's a problem with setting up shared directories at boot
time.

[Bug 1168801] [NEW] Broken dependency, unable to update or install packages

2013-04-13 Thread Luther
Public bug reported:

When using apt-get install:

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 python3 : Depends: python3-minimal (= 3.2.3-5ubuntu1) but 3.2.3-5ubuntu1.1 is
to be installed
 python3-dev : Depends: python3 (= 3.2.3-5ubuntu1.1) but 3.2.3-5ubuntu1 is to
be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a
solution).

It looks like the '=' should be '>='. If I run 'apt-get -f install', it
tries to uninstall a very large number of packages.

Re: [Bug 1168801] [NEW] Broken dependency, unable to update or install packages

2013-04-14 Thread Luther
NOTE: Today, 'apt-get -f install' gave me different results. It upgraded
'python3 python3-dev python3-minimal' instead of trying to uninstall
apparently everything that depends on python3. My current problem seems
to be fixed, but I don't know the bug that caused it.

NOTE2: Today is the first time I ran 'sudo apt-get update' from the
command line, though I assume that must have been happening
automatically. (I was unable to update for several days.)

> What is the complete command line issued?

I got the same error message from the following commands:
sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get upgrade python3=3.2.3-5ubuntu1.1

I also got a similar error from the Update Manager, which was trying to
update python3 and python3-minimal, among others.

I didn't ask for it. I can only assume there must have been a mismatched
version number in the package list.

Anyway, thanks for the guidance.

Thanks for reporting this problem. We need some more information to find
the source of the problem.

First, just to check, I know this seems silly but the command is:

update-manager --devel-release

and not

update-manager --devel -release

It could just be the web page but it looks like you have an extra space
in there.

If that isn't the case then could you please attach the 3 log files from
/var/log/dist-upgrade

Subject: [Bug 164947] update-manager fails to compile with python 2.4 on

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I received the following error on attempting to upgrade to update-manager
1:0.85.3:
Errors were encountered while processing:
 update-manager
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
A package failed to install. Trying to recover:

finally:

pycentral pkginstall: error byte-compiling files (32)
dpkg: error processing update-manager (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 update-manager

The issue is that, in Python 2.4, you don't get try-except-finally - you
get try(try-except)-finally, but that's not what's in this file.

Changing the try-except-finally block to be a try-finally block with the
try-except as its contents (starting at line 414, ending at line 451)
fixes this problem.

It's explained at the beginning of the bug description. I updated it so
it is more explicit, but *please* always read carefully at least the
description if not the complete thread before asking for help. Thanks
for caring about that, though.

** Description changed:

- [This issue is fixed by removing evms]
+ [This issue is fixed by removing evms: just type "sudo apt-get remove
+ evms" in a console.]

In gutsy the new 2.6.22-4-generic kernel produces the following error
  message repreatedly:

  May 19 10:10:16 richard-desktop kernel: [ 227.338011] device-mapper:
table: 254:1: linear: dm-linear: Device lookup failed
  May 19 10:10:16 richard-desktop kernel: [ 227.338017] device-mapper:
ioctl: error adding target to table

This causes the disk to thrash. Can be eliminated by killing the udevd
daemon.
Does not occur with the 2.6.20-15 kernel.

To check for updates requires downloading upwards of 4 megs of data
sometimes, and is not always preferred by people on slow connections.
It can be set to check for updates every day, which is plenty on a
stable release. And since we don't want to make the packages different
just for the development cycle (special changes aren't good for finding
all bugs) it probably won't be set to update more frequently.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Since I am using 8.04 beta, it is assumed that updates are happening a
lot - which is expected. However if I just start the update manager, it
often will say my system is up to date. After pushing the check button
it finds more - shouldn't this be automatic?

[Bug 501715] Re: Kernel trace buffer should be cleared and size restored after profiling

2010-04-16 Thread Richard Luther
I am experiencing the same problem as Petar, after several hours the
swap file starts to get heavily used despite free showing less than half
my memory being used by applications and having vm.swappiness=0. I have
2G of RAM and 2.5G of swap, and the system behaves normally up until the
swap partition starts to get used at which point the system becomes
almost unusable. Attempting sudo swapoff -a fails for me as well.

[Bug 478288] Re: DVB-T-Adapters not registered properly (i.e. AF9015)

2009-12-28 Thread Ralf Luther
Hi,

as for my first post, I'd like to say that I own the same adapter and it works
properly with Me-TV and the karmic release version (after upgrading the
firmware by the system "Hardware Drivers"). As far as I can see the system
did'nt find the firmware for the adapter.
Could it be that the firmware isn't installed or must be renamed?
As far as I can see, your system tries to find the Firmware file for 3 times
and gives it up afterwards.

[Bug 1265602] Re: [PATCH] Please fix libjsoncpp Ubuntu packages (fixes minetest game crash when browsing "Public Serverlist")

2014-10-22 Thread Hex Luther
Minetest worked on ubuntu installed with wubi.exe from the package
"minetestc55" and upon trying to install that package on my pure ubuntu
computer I get:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package minetestc55 is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

E: Package 'minetestc55' has no installation candidate

[Bug 1006131] [NEW] GRUB2 doesn't boot OSX Partition after update (solved!)

2012-05-29 Thread Ralf Luther
Public bug reported:

After repartitioning my MBR formatted, multiboot HD GRUB would not boot my OSX
partitions.
My screen only shows "Error: Drive not found Error: file not found".
I manages to boot into the partition with SuperGrub2disk and OSX Boot disks.
By "try and error" I found out that there is something wrong in the OS-Prober
script.
The boot loader did try to look for a "sleepimage" file on the partition in the
wrong place.
the path in the prober-script was "/var/vm/sleepimage", but the file is located
on the OSX partition in "private/var/vm/sleepimage" (OS X 10.6.8).

Changing the path in grub.cfg and under /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober to the
above was my answer.

At last, I don't know if the bug does rather affect GRUB2 than os-prober
(with finds all my OS correctly), but I hope that someone can change
this.
