Javier, since you use kdm, please try workaround from bug 256261 - I

Interesting that you mention it: I have started to notice this slowdown
much more with hardy, and this is also the time when I switched to
almost fully encrypted disk on my laptop. It may be that kcryptd is
making it worse...

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2008-12-03 Thread Luka Renko
Thomas Pi, first I need to thank you for very detailed testing you have
performed. I can more or less confirm the same on my HP nw8440: feisty
was the last version that worked nicely on my laptop. Even latest
intrepid release did not help.

I notice that when machine get's unresponsive, that most of CPU (and this means
both cores here) is occupied by io-wait. You can best see this with "htop"
utility - just install it from the repository.
Also, during this "storm of load", CPU load gets to 8-10, resulting in high
heat of my laptop and heavy work on the fan. "acpi -t" shows temperature around
80C, which is much more than I want to see on average.

Since I expect that this is not just scheduler related, but may be also
something with HW, I would like to know what kind of IDE/SATA
controllers do you have. I have ICH7.

I agree that priority should be increased and this should get more
attention from kernel developers.

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2008-12-03 Thread Luka Renko
Two upstream bug reports that may be related:
1. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7372
2. http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12072

First one has very similar pattern of when regression was first
detected. Second one has similar symptoms, but not clear if older
kernels were ok.

[Bug 322278] [NEW] libmarble4 needs to include plugins

2009-01-28 Thread Luka Renko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libmarble4

kdeedu packaging for marble/libmarble4 is wrong in that that all plugins
are shipped in "marble" package (which is application), but it should be
shipped in "libmarble4" package (widget library) as the widget cannot
operate without plugins.

This is current content of "marble" package:
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/marble
/usr/share/doc/marble/copyright
/usr/bin
/usr/bin/geodatatest
/usr/bin/marble
/usr/bin/tilecreator
/usr/lib
/usr/lib/kde4
/usr/lib/kde4/libmarble_part.so
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/marble
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/marble/MarbleCrosshairsPlugin.so
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/marble/MarbleGeoDataPlugin.so
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/marble/CompassFloatItem.so
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/marble/MarbleOverviewMap.so
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/marble/MapScaleFloatItem.so
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/marble/MarbleStarsPlugin.so
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/marble/NavigationFloatItem.so
/usr/share/doc/marble/README
/usr/share/doc/marble/changelog.Debian.gz

Whole "/usr/lib/kde4/plugins" and "/usr/lib/kde4/libmarble_part.so"
should be moved to "libmarble4" package. This will leave only
applications in "marble" package.

This has been discussed with marble author on IRC:
[13:19:38] tackat: regarding bug 182144 - I think this is another
packaging issue in debian/ubuntu
[13:20:12] tackat: it seems the problem is that "libmarble4" package
should include plugins too
[13:20:27] tackat: and "marble" should only include application itself...
[13:20:51] Lure: yes, a libmarble4 without plugins won't be fun
[13:20:56] -*- tackat rolls eyes
[13:21:19] tackat: I know, you have to be angry on "these packagers" by
now ;-)
[13:21:30] Lure: right, it should just contain the application
[13:22:01] tackat: will write in the bug, close it as DOWNSTREAM and
open task in Ubuntu/Debian
[13:31:30] tackat: what about libmarble_part.so? is this application
specific, or should go together with widget
[13:36:56] tackat: I suspect this is KPart, so I would think libmarble4
(with widget) would be more appropriate
[13:37:26] tackat: that would leave "marble" package only apps (marble,
geodatatest, tilecreator)

[Bug 322278] Re: libmarble4 needs to include plugins

2009-01-28 Thread Luka Renko
Additional note from Torsten Rahm (see upstream bug):
The Marble-KPart should rather be shipped with the application. Otherwise the
widget would require KDE 4 to be installed. If the KPart is shipped with the
application then even people who don't have KDE 4 installed should be able to
use it, as the only components that require KDE 4 are the KPart and the
application.

2009-05-01 Thread Luka Renko
Noah: your laptop probably does not need vbetool to run on resume at

You may want to check this file:

You could try adding ";nw8240" to the same line where you can find

[Bug 358576] Re: exiv2 version 0.18 crashes / also crashes digikam / fixed in 0.18.1

2009-04-19 Thread Luka Renko
This is very unfortunate. :-(
Problem is that Tiff parsing code (which is also used for various RAW files)
was refactored so it is very hard for me to pull out exact fixes for crashes
various users are experiencing.

Which changes are considered bigger risk for regression? Most of the
changes are bug fixes (including several crashes). In terms of new
functionality, there is new command line mode: organize (note that
command line is not primary interface for libexiv2), new Nikon lens
database (just table updated), translations (are they problematic for
rosetta import or similar?) and build files for MSVC++.

I would also like to note that exiv2 is only used by KDE applications in
main (gwenview, digikam, kipi-plugins) and I do not see any GNOME/main
apps dependency (so I think it is not even on Ubuntu CD). Without fixes,
Kubuntu users using photo applications will have very unstable
experience with Jaunty. :-(

Anyway, I leave it Kubuntu core-dev's and Jonathan Riddell to drive this
further. I will just use PPA for the time being.

Yes, it unfortunate to have plasma network-manager with such bug.
However, you have a workaround: you can install knetworkmanager and
hidden networks should work for you. Just removed the plasma applet and
start knetworkmanager and you will hvae same functionality as in 8.10.

[Bug 281732] Re: Mute button on thinkpad x200/x200s

2009-03-09 Thread Luka Renko
I can confirm this bug on up-to-date Kubuntu Jaunty on ThinkPad x200s.

Pressing Mute button does not generate HAL event (lshal -m) and does not
issue KeyPress X event (xev). I can confirm that pressing Mute button
changes state reported by /proc/acpi/ibm/volume:

Before:
level: 7
mute: off
commands: up, down, mute
commands: level ( is 0-15)

After:
level: 7
mute: on
commands: up, down, mute
commands: level ( is 0-15)

Volume Up/Down keys work properly and generate both HAL and X event:

lshal -m
=

[Bug 340206] [NEW] ~/screen-configurations.xml file after kubuntu install

2009-03-09 Thread Luka Renko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

After clean install of Kubuntu Alpha 5, I have noticed that
screen-configurations.xml file is located in two places:
~/screen-configurations.xml
~/.local/screen-configurations.xml

I have searched through KDE source code, and it is only referenced in
kdebase/workspace/libs/kephal/configurations/xml/xmlconfigurations.cpp .
Since it is loading it from ~/.local, I suspect something else is
creating this will in user home directory.

[Bug 340210] [NEW] network-manager should recommend plasma-widget-network-manager

2009-03-09 Thread Luka Renko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

network-manager package Recommends network-manager-gnome | network-
manager-kde

Since in Jaunty, knetworkmanager (network-manager-kde) is not installed by
kubuntu-desktop, this causes that GNOME version is pulled in instead - these
are the packages installed on clean Kubuntu Alpha 5 install:
ii bluez-gnome 1.8-0ubuntu2
Bluetooth utilities for GNOME
ii gnome-keyring 2.25.92-0ubuntu1
GNOME keyring services (daemon and tools)
ii libgnome-keyring0 2.25.92-0ubuntu1
GNOME keyring services library
ii libpam-gnome-keyring 2.25.92-0ubuntu1
PAMmodule to unlock the GNOME keyring upon
ii libpolkit-gnome0 0.9-1ubuntu3
PolicyKit-gnome library
ii libsoup-gnome2.4-12.25.91-0ubuntu1
an HTTP library implementation in C -- Share
ii network-manager-gnome 0.7.1~rc3-0ubuntu1
network management framework (GNOME frontend

Since kubuntu-desktop in Jaunty now uses "plasma-widget-network-
manager", network-manager should not pull in any additional packages.

I see two ways to address this problem:
1. Change network-manager's Recommends and add "| plasma-widget-network-manager"
2. Change knetworkmanager and plasma-widget-network-manager packages to both
Provides network-manager-kde
(currently knetworkmanager ships in network-manager-kde binary package)

It would make sense to align with Debian in this matter.

[Bug 340215] [NEW] kubuntu-restricted-extras needs to be updated for jaunty

2009-03-09 Thread Luka Renko
Public bug reported:

When I wanted to install kubuntu-restricted-extras in Kubuntu Jaunty, it wanted
to install the following packages:
  ca-certificates-java flashplugin-nonfree gnome-audio gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio
  ia32-libs icedtea-6-jre-cacao icedtea6-plugin kdelibs-data kdelibs4c2a
  kubuntu-restricted-extras lib32asound2 lib32gcc1 lib32ncurses5 lib32stdc++6

  libdvdnav4 libdvdread3 libdvdread4 libfaad0 libfftw3-3 libgsm1
  libk3b2-extracodecs libk3b3 libk3b3-extracodecs libofa0 liboil0.3
libpostproc51
  libpulse-browse0 libpulsecore9 libqt3-mt libschroedinger-1.0-0 libsndfile1
  libspeexdsp1 libtunepimp5 libtunepimp5-mp3 libxine1-ffmpeg nspluginwrapper
  openjdk-6-jre openjdk-6-jre-headless openjdk-6-jre-lib pulseaudio

  pulseaudio-utils rhino ttf-bengali-fonts ttf-kannada-fonts ttf-oriya-fonts
  ttf-telugu-fonts ttf-wqy-zenhei tzdata-java unrar

I was surprised that gnome-audio/gstreamer/pulseaudio packages as
Kubuntu used xine by default. Also, pulling in Qt 3 dependencies into
Qt4/KDE4 clean installation does not makes much sense.

I think this needs proper review and cleanup before Jaunty Beta release.

[Bug 340220] [NEW] kde4 default settings for jaunty

2009-03-09 Thread Luka Renko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings

I have installed Kubuntu Jaunty Alpha 5 and have reviewed default
settings that are used in KDE4/Plasma. This is the list of settings that
in my opinion should be considered to have default configuration changed
from kubuntu-default-settings.

1. System Settings
GTK Style:
- I think we should have "Use my KDE fonts for GTK application" by default.

Desktop Effects:
- I thought this is auto enabled? On this laptop with Intel 4500 card it is not.

2. Plasma/Panel
- kickoff: should we enable change on hover?
- pager: should we show icons in 1 row (better for horizontal panel)?
- pager: should we enable icons by default?
- digital clock: year is not that useful, I would replace if with weekday

2009-03-09 Thread Luka Renko
Same problem here on x200s (Intel 4500, 1440x900). It may be that this
is related to (some) wide screens: panel is resized only to fit 4:3
screen.

** Summary changed:

+ jaunty: Kubuntu panel doesn't extend all the way across desktop

** Description changed:

SYMPTOMS: Kubuntu's panel is short by about 2 inches on my all intel
  machine only. Resolution is 1440X900

CAUSE: Unknown but doesn't affect the nvidia based machine in the same

[Bug 341399] [NEW] remove libkexiv2 source and binaries from jaunty

2009-03-11 Thread Luka Renko
Public bug reported:

libkexiv2 source package in Jaunty (current version 0.1.7-1ubuntu1) is KDE3
release of the library.
With KDE4, this library was integrated into kdegraphics source package and is
available in Jaunty. All packages dependent on KDE3 version were already ported
to KDE4, therefore there is no need to keep this package in Jaunty.

Please remove:
- source package: libkexiv2
- binary packages: libkexiv2-3 libkexiv2-3-dev

There are no rdepends on these packages in Jaunty (only newer packages
are marking them as Conflicts).

Note: removal of this package will also make it easier to upgrade to new
exiv2 library (see bug 309684).

[Bug 341415] Re: sync geeqie 1.0~alpha3-4 from debian/testing

2009-03-11 Thread Luka Renko
I would like to request FeatureFreeze exception for alpha3 version of
geekie. This version has proper support for newer version of exiv2
(0.18) and is required to get exiv2 0.18 into Jaunty - see bug 309684.

Since we have currently alpha2 release, I would suspect the risk of
going with alpha3 should be small enough.

I have performed a test-build in pbuilder/amd64 with exiv2 0.17 to
ensure that it is compatible with current version as well as test build
with exiv2 0.18 (which we want to gt in Januty) in my PPA.

I have testet clean install and upgrade from current version and it
works w/o problems.

2009-03-11 Thread Luka Renko
Extensive list of changes between alpha2 and alpha3 is available here:
http://geeqie.wiki.sourceforge.net/new_features

I am not user of geeqie, so I cannot judge how big this changes are (and
associated risks), I can only assume that users will anyway accept some risk as
the release is Alpha anyhow.
I suggest this FFe primarily due to high want to get exiv2 0.18 (and alpha2
does not work with it).

[Bug 341415] Re: sync geeqie 1.0~alpha3-4 from debian/testing

2009-03-11 Thread Luka Renko
Paste of changelog from web page, just for the record.

New features in alpha3

* Marks filtering
* Marks in iconview were made clickable
* Add an option named layout.home_path which modifies the behavior of the
Home button.
By default, pressing this button goes to the user's home directory.
When this option is set to a path, this path is used instead.
One can change the option value through Preferences > Advanced >
Navigation
  or directly in .geeqierc.
* Allow to override documentation paths through options:
  - documentation.helpdir
  - documentation.htmldir
Default values are set at configure time.
* Run image loader in separate thread - improved speed on dual-core
processors
* Add a Save button to Preferences dialog, which allow to save options to
file without quitting the application.
* Allow to change image.scroll_reset_method in Preferences > Image.
* Allow all Preferences pages to scroll vertically.
* use SHIFT for connected scroll and zoom
SHIFT + keys or mouse: affects all split windows
keys or mouse: affects only active window
CONTROL + mouse: moves fast (originally it was SHIFT + mouse)
* Add support for GPSInfo - patch by Klaus Ethgen
* Implement the search for image comment - patch by Klaus Ethgen
* Added option to use exif thumbnails
  - it requires exiv2 0.18 or the current svn
  - it is disabled by default because the exif thumbnails
may be outdated if the image was edited
* Add a button for each advanced entry in Properties Exif Panel that allow
to remove it from display.
* Custom exif look was improved: toggle instead of button, display
description instead of property key
* Let Create thumbnails start in current directory (fallback to home
directory if not available) as requested by Marcin Zajaczkowski (feature
request 2166691)
* Do a gtk_init before the parsing of command line arguments to allow gtk
specific options, see http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/2.14/gtk-running.html
* Html documentation was reformatted
* When more than one image is selected, Split Horizontal, Vertical and Quad
will use selected images when initialized

recent menu list
* .pef .dng and .arw extensions were added to default sidecar extensions
list, .k25 was added in Kodak raw extensions
* Display error dialog with appropriate message when user is trying to open
an invalid collection file
* Allow to invert the current selection in Collection view. A new Selection
submenu was added to the contextual menu, Select All and Select None were moved
to it, and Invert selection was added.
* Allow to drag keywords on files in list or icon view. Dragged text is
appended to keywords list of the destination file.
* Switch to fullscreen when double clicking on file in icon or list view
(feature request 1966042)

unwritable")
* New option: metadata.save_legacy_format ("Save metadata in GQview legacy
metadata format")
* New option: metadata.sync_grouped_files ("Write the same keywords and
comment to all files in a group")
* New option: metadata.confirm_write ("Ask before writing to image files")
* New option: metadata.confirm_timeout ("Write metadata after timeout
(seconds):")
* New option: metadata.confirm_on_image_change ("Write metadata on image
change")
* New option: metadata.confirm_on_dir_change ("Write metadata on directory
change")
* File class was made configurable in Preferences dialog
* A possibility to connect keywords with marks was implemented
* Improved sidecar writting, private metadata can be saved in xmp format
* Sidecar files grouping was made case-insensitive
added possibility to use macros %raw, %image, %meta in extensions lists
* Do not enter a directory after rename
* When "Remember print settings" is checked, save _all_ settings. Before
this, text fields, text size, source, layout and image scale properties were

[Bug 309684] Re: Please sync exiv2-0.18 from Debian Experimental

2009-03-11 Thread Luka Renko
I have finally found some time to push this a bit forward:
- new koffice2 beta (1.9.98.7-0ubuntu1) builds fine with 0.18
- requested removal of libkexiv2 from the archive - bug 341399
- requested sync/FFe for geeqie 1.0~alpha3-4 that builds with 0.18 - bug 341415

The only remaining problem (besides waiting for approvals from motu-
release and ubuntu-archive teams) remains pyexiv2 package which seems to
use some internal APIs. Will look into this in next days.

I have the same problem on HP nw8440 (Dual Core 2, 2 GHz, ATI). This bug has
several duplicates/similar reports, but no solution. :-(
Duplicates/similar issues: bug 226422, bug 210300, bug 158585, bug 67906

I also think that this is more likely kernel issue and not issue with
"acpi" package (which is not much of the package anyhow).

[Bug 279186] [NEW] kernel oops on boot with splash

2008-10-06 Thread Luka Renko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-5-generic

Description:Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release:8.10
Linux renko 2.6.27-5-generic #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 00:36:38 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Linux version 2.6.27-5-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.3.2 (Ubuntu
4.3.2-1ubuntu8) ) #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 00:36:38 UTC 2008

I have successfully installed Kubuntu Intrepid Beta (amd64) on new Intel Atom
330 (dual-core) motherboard (D945GCLF2):
http://www.mini-box.com/Intel-D945GCLF2-Mini-ITX-Motherboard

Now I have problems booting with splash screen: in 90% of cases the
kernel oops-es with one of the two attached oops photos. If I boot
without "splash quiet" it boots normally and works without problems.

[Bug 279186] Re: kernel oops on boot with splash

2008-10-06 Thread Luka Renko
I have tested this even more. It looks like I can 100% reproduce OOPS
(but with different stack traces) when I use "quiet" boot option. It
seems that "splash" boot option is not an option, as I can reliably boot
without problem if I remove "quiet", but leave "splash" option.

Will change bug description to match this.

I have also attached more oops photos where you can see different stack
traces reported. It looks like there are at least three distinct
functions where I get oops:

1. run_timer_softirq / clockevents_program_event / __do_softirq ... /
smp_apic_apic_timer_interrupt

2. neigh_periodic_timer / clockevents_program_event / __do_softirq ... /
smp_apic_apic_timer_interrupt

3. oops_begin / do_page_fault / enqueue_task_fair ... / error_exit /
_i8042_interrupt

[Bug 279186] Re: kernel oops on boot with "quiet" option

2008-10-07 Thread Luka Renko
Richard: do you get kernel panics only during the boot (like me) or also when
the system has booted properly.
Actually you may be right regarding successful boot after being power-off for
longer time: this may result in my impression that it did not panic 100% times.

Otherwise, new kernel currently being built has some softirq/htimers fixes that
may be related:
  * hrtimer: migrate pending list on cpu offline
  * hrtimer: fix migration of CB_IRQSAFE_NO_SOFTIRQ hrtimers
  * hrtimer: mark migration state
  * hrtimer: prevent migration of per CPU hrtimers
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/intrepid-changes/2008-October/008062.html
Will test again when this kernel hits the archives.

Just for completeness, I am using picoPSU-90 (with power adapter):
http://www.mini-box.com/picoPSU-90-power-kit

I use it in M300 enclosure with compact flash reader (but not used):

2008-10-07 Thread Luka Renko
No luck with new kernel (2.6.27-6). :-(

It is slightly better, I was able to get boot after three panics, so it
does not happen always. I have attached two photos that I managed to
take (one panic did reboot before my phone camera took the picture).

One oops is the same as before (call_softirq), other seems to be similar
to neigh_periodic_timer.
