[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness
Thomas Pi, first I need to thank you for very detailed testing you have performed. I can more or less confirm the same on my HP nw8440: feisty was the last version that worked nicely on my laptop. Even latest intrepid release did not help. I notice that when machine get's unresponsive, that most of CPU (and this means both cores here) is occupied by io-wait. You can best see this with "htop" utility - just install it from the repository. Also, during this "storm of load", CPU load gets to 8-10, resulting in high heat of my laptop and heavy work on the fan. "acpi -t" shows temperature around 80C, which is much more than I want to see on average. Since I expect that this is not just scheduler related, but may be also something with HW, I would like to know what kind of IDE/SATA controllers do you have. I have ICH7. I agree that priority should be increased and this should get more attention from kernel developers. -- Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131094 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Which changes are considered bigger risk for regression? Most of the changes are bug fixes (including several crashes). In terms of new functionality, there is new command line mode: organize (note that command line is not primary interface for libexiv2), new Nikon lens database (just table updated), translations (are they problematic for rosetta import or similar?) and build files for MSVC++. I would also like to note that exiv2 is only used by KDE applications in main (gwenview, digikam, kipi-plugins) and I do not see any GNOME/main apps dependency (so I think it is not even on Ubuntu CD). Without fixes, Kubuntu users using photo applications will have very unstable experience with Jaunty. :-( Anyway, I leave it Kubuntu core-dev's and Jonathan Riddell to drive this further. I will just use PPA for the time being. -- exiv2 version 0.18 crashes / also crashes digikam / fixed in 0.18.1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358576 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 341399] [NEW] remove libkexiv2 source and binaries from jaunty
Public bug reported: libkexiv2 source package in Jaunty (current version 0.1.7-1ubuntu1) is KDE3 release of the library. With KDE4, this library was integrated into kdegraphics source package and is available in Jaunty. All packages dependent on KDE3 version were already ported to KDE4, therefore there is no need to keep this package in Jaunty. Please remove: - source package: libkexiv2 - binary packages: libkexiv2-3 libkexiv2-3-dev There are no rdepends on these packages in Jaunty (only newer packages are marking them as Conflicts). [Bug 341415] Re: sync geeqie 1.0~alpha3-4 from debian/testing
I would like to request FeatureFreeze exception for alpha3 version of geekie. This version has proper support for newer version of exiv2 (0.18) and is required to get exiv2 0.18 into Jaunty - see bug 309684. Since we have currently alpha2 release, I would suspect the risk of going with alpha3 should be small enough. I have performed a test-build in pbuilder/amd64 with exiv2 0.17 to ensure that it is compatible with current version as well as test build with exiv2 0.18 (which we want to gt in Januty) in my PPA. I have testet clean install and upgrade from current version and it works w/o problems. -- sync geeqie 1.0~alpha3-4 from debian/testing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/341415 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Extensive list of changes between alpha2 and alpha3 is available here: http://geeqie.wiki.sourceforge.net/new_features I am not user of geeqie, so I cannot judge how big this changes are (and associated risks), I can only assume that users will anyway accept some risk as the release is Alpha anyhow. I suggest this FFe primarily due to high want to get exiv2 0.18 (and alpha2 does not work with it). -- sync geeqie 1.0~alpha3-4 from debian/testing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/341415 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 341415] Re: sync geeqie 1.0~alpha3-4 from debian/testing
Paste of changelog from web page, just for the record. New features in alpha3 * Marks filtering * Marks in iconview were made clickable * Add an option named layout.home_path which modifies the behavior of the Home button. By default, pressing this button goes to the user's home directory. When this option is set to a path, this path is used instead. One can change the option value through Preferences > Advanced > Navigation or directly in .geeqierc. * Allow to override documentation paths through options: - documentation.helpdir - documentation.htmldir Default values are set at configure time. * Run image loader in separate thread - improved speed on dual-core processors * Add a Save button to Preferences dialog, which allow to save options to file without quitting the application. * Allow to change image.scroll_reset_method in Preferences > Image. * Allow all Preferences pages to scroll vertically. * use SHIFT for connected scroll and zoom SHIFT + keys or mouse: affects all split windows keys or mouse: affects only active window CONTROL + mouse: moves fast (originally it was SHIFT + mouse) * Add support for GPSInfo - patch by Klaus Ethgen * Implement the search for image comment - patch by Klaus Ethgen * Added option to use exif thumbnails - it requires exiv2 0.18 or the current svn - it is disabled by default because the exif thumbnails may be outdated if the image was edited * Add a button for each advanced entry in Properties Exif Panel that allow to remove it from display. * Custom exif look was improved: toggle instead of button, display description instead of property key * Let Create thumbnails start in current directory (fallback to home directory if not available) as requested by Marcin Zajaczkowski (feature request 2166691) * Do a gtk_init before the parsing of command line arguments to allow gtk specific options, see http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/2.14/gtk-running.html * Html documentation was reformatted * When more than one image is selected, Split Horizontal, Vertical and Quad will use selected images when initialized * Hide .gqv extension from collection name in collection window title and recent menu list * .pef .dng and .arw extensions were added to default sidecar extensions list, .k25 was added in Kodak raw extensions * Display error dialog with appropriate message when user is trying to open an invalid collection file * Allow to invert the current selection in Collection view. A new Selection submenu was added to the contextual menu, Select All and Select None were moved to it, and Invert selection was added. * Allow to drag keywords on files in list or icon view. Dragged text is appended to keywords list of the destination file. * Switch to fullscreen when double clicking on file in icon or list view (feature request 1966042) * New option: metadata.save_legacy_IPTC ("Store keywords and comments also in legacy IPTC tags") * New option: metadata.warn_on_write_problems ("Warn if the image files are unwritable") * New option: metadata.save_legacy_format ("Save metadata in GQview legacy metadata format") * New option: metadata.sync_grouped_files ("Write the same keywords and comment to all files in a group") * New option: metadata.confirm_write ("Ask before writing to image files") * New option: metadata.confirm_timeout ("Write metadata after timeout (seconds):") * New option: metadata.confirm_on_image_change ("Write metadata on image change") * New option: metadata.confirm_on_dir_change ("Write metadata on directory change") * File class was made configurable in Preferences dialog * A possibility to connect keywords with marks was implemented * Improved sidecar writting, private metadata can be saved in xmp format * Sidecar files grouping was made case-insensitive added possibility to use macros %raw, %image, %meta in extensions lists * Do not enter a directory after rename * When "Remember print settings" is checked, save _all_ settings. Before this, text fields, text size, source, layout and image scale properties were not saved. * Added preview support for many RAW formats (Exiv2 0.18 is required) -- sync geeqie 1.0~alpha3-4 from debian/testing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/341415 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have tested this even more. It looks like I can 100% reproduce OOPS (but with different stack traces) when I use "quiet" boot option. It seems that "splash" boot option is not an option, as I can reliably boot without problem if I remove "quiet", but leave "splash" option. Will change bug description to match this. I have also attached more oops photos where you can see different stack traces reported. It looks like there are at least three distinct functions where I get oops: 1. run_timer_softirq / clockevents_program_event / __do_softirq ... / smp_apic_apic_timer_interrupt 2. neigh_periodic_timer / clockevents_program_event / __do_softirq ... / smp_apic_apic_timer_interrupt 3. oops_begin / do_page_fault / enqueue_task_fair ... / error_exit / _i8042_interrupt ** Attachment added: "oops.tar" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18270605/oops.tar ** Summary changed: - kernel oops on boot with splash + kernel oops on boot with "quiet" option -- kernel oops on boot with "quiet" option https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/279186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 279186] Re: kernel oops on boot with "quiet" option
Richard: do you get kernel panics only during the boot (like me) or also when the system has booted properly. Actually you may be right regarding successful boot after being power-off for longer time: this may result in my impression that it did not panic 100% times. Otherwise, new kernel currently being built has some softirq/htimers fixes that may be related: * hrtimer: migrate pending list on cpu offline * hrtimer: fix migration of CB_IRQSAFE_NO_SOFTIRQ hrtimers * hrtimer: mark migration state * hrtimer: prevent migration of per CPU hrtimers https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/intrepid-changes/2008-October/008062.html Will test again when this kernel hits the archives.
