[Bug 32738] Re: realplayer uninstallable in Dapper - depends on xlibs

Same... but the package comes from multiverse component. A solution
would probably be creating a new package especially for ubuntu.

i think that this is the key of the problem. I've recently tried the

debian (but the debian/ directory can be fetched from his svn repository

works..., monodevelop works well on gentoo too... i don't know if the
problem is in dh_clideps or some applied patch.

Another thing... i've tried to recompile monodevelop without any of your
patches (e.g: by hand with ./configure && make && sudo make install) but
there's always this problem. I've noticed that MonoDevelop seems to see
only assemblies from the "Mono" package.

[Bug 956812] [NEW] Ambiance window decorations lack the "hover" effect and sometimes are shown as disabled.

2012-03-16 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Public bug reported:

Window decorations buttons (close, minimize, maximize) consistently lack
the subtle lightning effect when the mouse is over them. Other times the
buttons are shown as disabled which is misleading since the buttons work
perfectly fine. Maybe one time in a hundred I get a window exposing the
correct behavior. It looks like it is totally random.

Since mutter/gnome-shell does not show the same issue (with the same
Ambiance theme), I presume this issue is compiz/unity specific.

I attached a screen recording session to better explain the issue.

By the way, width and height are not unrelated. After some quick
experimentation I determined that a magic combination of both width and
height must be reached for the decoration to work properly (provided
that at least one side exceeds 1280 pixels).

[Bug 957871] [NEW] HUD: Pressing on a menu item executes the action multiple times.

2012-03-17 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Start any application, e.g.: Google Chrome;
2) Invoke the HUD by pressing meta (Alt);
3) Type the name of a menu entry, e.g.: "New Tab"
4) Press "Enter";
5) The action associated with the menu item will be invoked from two to three
times.

Other applications (such as Nautilus, Thunderbird, Firefox) expose a
similar behavior. I presume it is systemic.

Clicking on the menu item does NOT result in erroneous behavior.

Expected result:

Pressing the key should invoke the action associated with the
menu item only once.

The compiz update I received todya (1:0.9.7.0~bzr2995-0ubuntu3) seems to
fix this issue. The changelog entry says they've rolled back a patch for

My guess is that we should target the compiz package instead of unity

[Bug 1283992] [NEW] Multi-monitor: wallpaper is corrupted

2014-02-24 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Public bug reported:

Given this set-up:

* Bigger primary screen (1920x1080)
* Smaller secondary screen (1600x900) to the right of primary screen

It seems that the outputs are swapped. I.e.: I get the wallpaper of the
smaller screen on the primary output, and the bigger one on the
secondary (see attached screenshot).

[Bug 184784] Re: nautilus crashed with SIGSEGV in g_main_context_dispatch()

I also got this crash on 12.04. However I am not sure if it would be
more appropriate to open a new bug (and mark this one as duplicate)
since the stacktrace associated with this bug report is 4 years old.

[Bug 1283992] Re: Multi-monitor: wallpaper is corrupted

I can't seem to reproduce it on a VirtualBox VM with two monitors using
yesterday's live image installed onto the hard drive.

I hope to have the time to update and try again on my real laptop some
time this week.

[Bug 1270555] [NEW] The Text Entry dialog shows invalid keyboard shortcuts to change layout

2014-01-19 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu Trusty:

Clicking the "Text entry settings" on indicator-keyboard opens the "Text
Entry" configuration panel. However, this panel shows two keybindings to
switch between keyboard layouts which are unusable in their default
setting:

- Switch to next source using: Super + Space
- Switch to previous source using: Shift + Super + Space

Changing the combo to any which doesn't include the Super key works-
around the problem.

I'm speculating that this happens because Compiz/Unity incercepts the
Super key since it is used to manage its shortcuts.

Hi William,

I have added your PPA, installed these new packages and then restarted
my session but Super+Space and Shift+Super+Space do not work yet.

Let me know if/how I can do further tests.

[Bug 1270555] Re: The Text Entry dialog shows invalid keyboard shortcuts to change layout

2014-02-15 Thread Lorenzo Villani
In between I reported the bug I installed Ubuntu GNOME on my "test"
partition and did the previous test by installing the 'ubuntu-desktop'
metapackage to get Unity back. For some reason it didn't pull unity-
settings-daemon which wasn't installed when I ran the test.

I installed it manually and confirm that layout switching with both
Super+Space and Super+Shift+Space work properly if I use your PPA.

Sorry for the confusion.

[Bug 1280622] [NEW] Add gtk2-engines-murrine:i386 to Skype dependencies

2014-02-15 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Public bug reported:

Adding gtk2-engines-murrine:i386 to Skype dependencies improves
integration with the default Unity desktop on 64-bit systems since it

[Bug 1124966] Re: [precise] Update/backport hplip to support newer printers

2013-02-20 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Seconded, I have an HP DeskJet 3520 e-All-In-One and had to backport
hplip from Raring to use it (PPA ir here:
https://launchpad.net/~lvillani/+archive/hplip - I've been using it for
some time and got no problems so far). Having the new version
distributed as an SRU would enable out-of-the-box support for these
newer printers.

Re: [Bug 1134112] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in OsAbort()

2013-03-08 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Symptoms are the same as bug 982889. It happens like once every three/four
boots and I have to restart lightdm manually. From time to time I also get
the "X is running in low graphics mode" message (or something similar, I
can't recall at the moment). Quite annoying.

[Bug 888039] Re: Gradual degradation in desktop performance.

2011-11-24 Thread Lorenzo Villani
I confirm that I can see this bug also when using Catalyst (fglrx)
drivers (both the version available in Oneiric and later versions
avaiable from AMD's website).

In my case the issue is exacerbated by the number of active X clients.
Closing some windows slightly improves the situation. However, I noticed
this behavior in addition to performance degradation over time.

[Bug 964146] Re: [workaround] Application lens is empty since the update to 5.8.0

2012-03-24 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Short story:

I think unity-lens-applications should Depend (not Recommend or Suggest)
zeitgeist OR zeitgeist-core for installation. On some system the
zeitgeist daemon may not be installed, thus causing the lens to
malfunction.

Long story:

I have configured APT to prevent installation of soft-dependencies
(Recommended and Suggested dependencies) like this:

APT::Install-Recommends "0";
APT::Install-Suggests "0";
Apt::AutoRemove::RecommendsImportant "0";
Apt::AutoRemove::SuggestsImportant "0";

Now, unity-lens-applications depends on libzeitgeist which in turn
Recommends zeitgeist OR zeitgeist-core. Since it is a Recommended
package it is not installed on my system, thus the zeitgeist daemon is
not started.

I had to manually install at least zeitgeist-core, then restart unity-
applications-daemon to have it spawn the zeitgeist daemon. After that,
the lens worked as before.

[Bug 964146] Re: [workaround] Application lens is empty since the update to 5.8.0

2012-03-24 Thread Lorenzo Villani
By the way, this issue also affects unity-lens-files, which also depends
on libzeitgeist but doesn't bring in the zeitgeist daemon in case
installation of weak-dependencies is disabled.

[Bug 964146] Re: [workaround] Application lens is empty since the update to 5.8.0

2012-03-26 Thread Lorenzo Villani
I would like to point out that the original bug I reported was due to
zeitgeist not being installed because the lens does not hard-depend on
zeitgeist-core.

The issue reported by Chris Johnston (comment #4) is about zeitgeist-
daemon unable to start due to a corrupted Zeitgeist database.

The outcome is the same (i.e.: the lens does not work because zeitgeist-
daemon is not running) but the premise is different (i.e.: zeitgeist-
daemon not running because it isn't installed vs. zeitgeist-daemon is
unable to start).

My opinion is that we should treat these issues separately.

Looks like title bar updates also affect the hover effect. I usually
don't pay much attention to title updates in the title bar, so I ended
up making the wrong query while looking for existing bugs, hence the
duplicate.

[Bug 882024] [NEW] Lag While Dragging Windows Around

2011-10-26 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Public bug reported:

Dragging windows (and in general, everything that involves dragging)
seems to lag behind relatively to cursor position. This issue is
exacerbated by screen size: bigger resolutions make this issue more
noticeable.

I'm experiencing this behavior both in Mutter (gnome-shell) and Compiz
(with or without Unity) and it happens regardless of driver choice
(either the OSS radeon driver or the closed source fglrx).

It didn't happen on Ubuntu 10.04.

I confirm that this issue happens also on Fedora 15 with all updates
installed (at least with gnome-shell since Unity is not available
there). So this isn't an Ubuntu-specific bug. On Fedora 16 beta they
managed to reduce the lag but I don't honestly know whether they patched
the window manager or something else. I didn't test compiz there so I
don't know whether it's a compiz-specific bug.

I also tried a newer snapshot of xf86-video-ati (from freedesktop's git
repository) driver without success.

[Bug 882024] Re: Lag While Dragging Windows Around

2011-10-26 Thread Lorenzo Villani
** Description changed:

+ UPDATE: it seems to be a generalized problem since I experience it even
+ in global menus. It seems that cursor position updates (sent to
+ applications) "lag behind" the position of the cursor shown on screen.
+ (Yeah, I know, terrible description but I can't find a better way to
+ describe this situation).

[Bug 882024] Re: Lag While Dragging Windows Around

2011-10-26 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Update: it doesn't happen with Unity 2d so there's definitely a problem
with the latest generation of compositing window managers.

[Bug 882024] Re: Lag While Dragging Windows Around

2011-10-27 Thread Lorenzo Villani
Update: No problems with kwin (KDE 4.7) or Xfwm4 (Xfce 4.8 - albeit with
noticeably low fps while dragging with compositing enabled, but no lag)
either with fglrx or open-source drivers.
