understand if it's the blackscreen opt or else)...but I'm still tryin to figure
out why... v.v*
meanwhile i'm switchin' to ssh even for remote desktop(should work finer)

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload

2009-12-20 Thread LaM
Hello ^^,

sorry i'm new so i haven't provided any info at all(but i'm willing to
if u kindly point me out where to search ^^)

I'll explain:

After I've freshly installed 9.10 64bit, i moved my username folder content on
a separate partition mounted boottime from fstab.
At the beginning i thought was that, maybe i mistook something thou...no. It's
not that. Even remming the line and rebooting cause the same issue:

Icons being kept aligned(right click on desktop->uncheck 'Keep
Aligned'). After a reboot, relogin or simply refreshing hitting F5 i got
it rechecked.

Right now i'm checking the configuration manually(system
tools->configuration editor). I see that the variable associated to
that(/apps/nautilus/desktop-metadata/directory/nautilus-icon-view-keep-
aligned) it's not a bool but it's a string...even changin it to
false(and even after reboot it is still false) doesn't change
everything.

Hope this helpsthx :)

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload

2009-12-20 Thread LaM
Ok i've checked the config...changing to bool(false) and hitting F5 reset it to
string(true).
Setting the string to false and fixing it with mandatory...do not change a bit!
After hitting F5 it is still resetted to true!

Thou if i change nautilus-icon-view-tighter-layout to false and hit F5
this is not resetted...

weird :s

Alternatively, this suggestion seems to have gotten favourable reviews

[Bug 372789] Re: NotifyOSD notifications shouldn't appear when using fullscreen applications

2009-06-03 Thread Julian Lam
If notify-osd is supposed to follow the main panel, I'm guessing that is
the Applications menu? My notification area is on monitor two, and the
bubbles pop up on monitor 1.

In any case, Vadim's suggestion of supressing notify-osd altogether
during fullscreen apps works if you're playing a game, but when I'm
watching a video, I would appreciate notifications on my secondary
monitor.

However, then you get into the problem of notifications that move away
from their default locations, which might irritate some users... and
integrating notifications into a fullscreen application isn't any
better.. hrm.

[Bug 372789] Re: NotifyOSD notifications shouldn't appear when using fullscreen applications

2009-06-04 Thread Julian Lam
Yes, that would also work for me. Both Pidgin and Empathy change the
fast-user-switcher to reflect their status, and tying in notify-osd with
that (and letting critical notifications through) would be a good idea!

This would further integrate pidgin (but not going so far as depending
on one or the other) into the desktop, and other IM applications can
support this through plugins.

[Bug 382454] [NEW] XVideo fullscreen flickers when notify-osd notification spawns

2009-06-01 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

When watching a video in fullscreen (with XVideo output), the screen
flickers for a fraction of a second and displays the desktop background
whenever a notification (using Jaunty's new notify-osd) is spawned. This
interrupts the user experience, and should be fixed, if at all possible.

vlc:

I am currently using the medigeek PPA to integrate the non-fullscreen
output to the VLC window, although I don't think this changes things, as
the bug should be reproducible in the vanilla install of VLC on Jaunty.

Hi Peter,

In my opinion... no, the behaviour should not be changed, since in my
specific example, I could use notifications. I have a dual-head setup.

However, since the majority of users are using one monitor, it is
definitely a close call as to what should be done.

[Bug 358586] Re: Regression! vino no longer refreshes screen except for XVideo fullscreen

2009-04-17 Thread Julian Lam
** Summary changed:

- vino no longer updates screen except for XVideo fullscreen
+ Regression! vino no longer refreshes screen except for XVideo fullscreen

** Description changed:

After upgrading to Ubuntu Jaunty, vnc4server no longer updates the
screen properly for connected clients. Oddly enough, watching VLC videos
in full screen updates properly, but other than that, the screen is
  static.

Clients can still interact with the host computer, but they cannot see
  what they're doing.

[Bug 227563] Re: cannot change screen resolution in counter-strike 1.6 under wine

2009-04-17 Thread Julian Lam
Unfortunately, because wine is designed to work with one monitor, and
not a dual (or triple) head setup with Twinview, this is most likely
better to be categorized as "wishlist".

However, the workaround listed above works perfectly. Wine should
automatically interface with nvidia-settings and setup metamodes
properly. Alternatively, nvidia-settings should set up metamodes
automatically.

[Bug 358586] Re: vino no longer updates screen except for XVideo fullscreen

2009-04-18 Thread Julian Lam
Thanks for the reply, Sebastien :)

Unfortunately, as I don't know how to set up a vnc server, I'm up the
creek without a paddle. I rely on Ubuntu's preinstalled server, since it
is setup to forward the appropriate X session upon connection.

An interesting development is that the vnc server works fine with compiz
off, interestingly enough. Perhaps it is a compiz problem?

[Bug 245956] Re: Error while creating child process in terminal

2009-04-20 Thread Arien Lam
I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04, and confirm this issue. This was an
upgrade from freshly installed 8.10 on a 2nd gen. Macbook, and no
tampering by me that would cause this.

There are some related reports, I didn't assign a "duplicate" because
this page has the error message that I got.

I am no expert but this is what I found. This problem seems to be caused
by the filesystem at /dev/pty not being available. It is possible to
make /dev/pty available by changing /etc/fstab (works, should not be
necessary) or changing setup to make it available at the right time in
the boot process.

Diagnostic:
Looked in /etc/rcS.d using Nautilus, the link S11mountdevsubfs.sh is not there.
There is a link S03mountdevsubfs.sh (so maybe the system tries to make it
available too early?).

Manual solution:
To make the S11 link, I pressed ALT+F2 and typed:

gksudo ln -s /etc/init.d/mountdevsubfs.sh /etc/rcS.d/S11mountdevsubfs.sh

After a restart, the problem was gone. Afterwards, I removed the link
S03mountdevsubfs.sh and found no difference with or without it, as long
as the S11 was there.

Sorry developers, only a diagnostic and a solution, not the cause.

[Bug 358586] Re: vino no longer updates screen except for XVideo fullscreen

2009-04-25 Thread Julian Lam
This looks to be a bug affecting users with nvidia cards on the HOST
computer. The problem seems to remain irrespective of the guest's
setup...

If you're experiencing this bug report, can you re-post and tell us
whether you're using the 180.xx hardware driver provided by Ubuntu, or
if you've compiled the driver yourself from NVIDIA's website.

Also, please tell me whether you're running 32 or 64 bit on the host
computer.

===

I am running the 180.51 driver downloaded from nvidia.com on an 8800GT.
This is a 64-bit installation of Ubuntu Jaunty.

[Bug 355761] Re: [i855] [Intel 82852/855GM] xrandr does not output correctly to VGA output

2009-04-29 Thread Julian Lam
Some more testing data:

Trying to get a cloned display on a VGA monitor results in a similar
unusable state.

Laptop: 1280x800 native LVDS
Monitor: 1280x1024 native VGA

When running the command "xrandr --output VGA --auto", 1280x1024 is
correctly set as the resolution, however, what is output is not
1280x1024. Instead, it looks as though the LVDS screen tries to display
1280x1024, and skews is down to 1280x800, so that everything is
squished. For some reason, the VGA output ALSO compresses the image, so
I am left with an unusable half-screen (as the bottom half is black)

[Bug 366473] [NEW] PS/2 Keyboard stops working after soft reset

2009-04-24 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Running an old computer here, with a standard IBM KB-7353 PS/2 Keyboard.
The keyboard input stops working after a soft reset (and only after a
soft reset)! Hard resets configure the keyboard properly.

Problem also occurs on a different Compaq PS/2 keyboard. Have not tried
using a USB keyboard, but I´d expect it to work properly.

I tried toggling numlock on and off during boot to see exactly when it
stops working (as the keyboard works in the BIOS and during the GRUB
bootloader), and the keyboard stops responding right after the xubuntu
usplash pops up, and the OS starts loading.

I have the "Notifications" plugin enabled, which created little
"toaster" popups whenever a contact comes online/messages/emails. This
works for the most part, but when I am in a group chat, emesene treats
each new received message from a group chat member as a new conversation
between me and that member.

Example:
I am A. I have been chatting with B for several minutes, and then I invite C
into the conversation. The chat now becomes a group chat.

Every time B sends a message in the group chat, the Notification popup
treats it as a "new" conversation between just me (A) and B, even though
the message is a group chat message.

Same with C.

The chat itself works flawlessly. Sent messages are received by all
parties, and received messages are received by all parties. It is simply
the notification plugin that seems to be malfunctioning.

[Bug 352695] [NEW] emesene alert box text highlighted in Jaunty Beta

2009-03-31 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emesene

Upon upgrade to 9.04 beta, emesene alert boxes (such as the error box
when you are kicked off the service) spawn with the text highlighted.

Currently using emesene 1.4.8 (emesene-crazy).

Please advise as to what logs you'd like me to upload.

[Bug 333269] Re: [jaunty] leave message does not use new notify system

2009-03-31 Thread Julian Lam
Chris - My bad, I didn't realize that that was how notify-osd alerts
worked.

If that's the case, then there's no way we can have messages appearing
under notify-osd, unless the fallback alerts are beautified
significantly, since at current, they're quite uninspiring...

Either that, or use notify-daemon in conjunction with notify-osd...

2009-04-03 Thread Julian Lam
This crash occurred again last night.

I believe it was due to the computer trying to suspend/hibernate when
becoming dangerously close to running out of battery.

Computer did not successfully hibernate, and soon halted completely when
the battery ran out.

[Bug 210472] Re: Timidity daemon doesn't play nice with pulse audio

2009-04-07 Thread Julian Lam
The program in question for me is Sibelius, which also has a delay.

Perhaps you can play around with optional switches when restarting
timidity... for example, the manpage for timidity says that the switch
"F" can introduce a delay. This may or may not solve the problem.

Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu Jaunty, vnc4server no longer updates the

[Bug 227563] Re: cannot change screen resolution in counter-strike 1.6 under wine

Please note that a workaround has been detailed under the following two links.

http://www.ltyer.com/wordpress/tutorial-xorg-metamodes-running-fullscreen-games-on-1-monitor-in-a-dual-display
http://www.kareeser.com/ubuntu/metamodes.php

The problem is due to TwinView merging both displays into a single
resolution, which confuses games.

[Bug 355761] [NEW] xrandr does not output correctly to VGA at 1360x768

2009-04-05 Thread Julian Lam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

When outputting to VGA (which happens to be a TV), trying to output at
1360x768 (the preferred and maximum resolution supported by the TV),
graphical tearing and artifacts are seen on both connected outputs (LVDS
and VGA - See attached picture). As far as I can tell, there is no
effect on the operation of the computer itself, only the video output.

Please note that the system autodetect does NOT automatically enable the
mode "1360x768". I had to add it manually to my xorg.conf file. The file
should be attached for you to see.

Also note that the xrandr output worked decently in Intrepid. There were
no artifacts or tearing that could be seen.

Update: Output works correctly when DRI is set to false... but this
stops compiz from starting, which isn't exactly a decent workaround.

Advise?

[Bug 323320] Re: Timidity does not connect to pulseaudio

2009-04-06 Thread Julian Lam
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 210472 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/210472

Symptoms are duplicates of bug 210472, and the problem isn't with
Pulseaudio, since it's working according to spec, it seems to be
Timidity which needs to be updated. Thanks for bringing this bug to the
forefront, though. If devs need more info, they can turn to you in the
other bug report as well.

[Bug 210472] Re: Timidity daemon doesn't play nice with pulse audio

2009-04-06 Thread Julian Lam
I believe this is because TiMidity is loaded prior to the Pulseaudio
sound server.

I fixed this problem by restarting the timidity session: sudo
/etc/init.d/timidity restart

After that, all MIDI-out wavemapping worked perfectly, and my program
(in my case, Sibelius 4.x) did not steal focus from Firefox/emesene/etc

Give that a try. It's a more elegant workaround and can be programmed
into Timidity (to start later.. or something... I guess...)

[Bug 356798] Re: apache redirects to /var/www/mythweb

2009-04-06 Thread Julian Lam
You need to modify the file /etc/apache2/sites-available/default to
reflect the change in the default served directory. The appropriate
option is "DocumentRoot"

You also want to modify "DirectoryIndex" in your httpd.conf file (or
some file with that option) to cause apache2 to not pick index.html as
the index.

Bug invalid.
