[Bug 118537] Re: logout dialog does not offer suspend/hibernate
Tentative success: AT Groote Schuur Primary School I decided to upgrade to Hardy Heron followed by an LTSP install on our system and to my disappointment the Quit button did not work - same old pause for a minute and even freezing up. So I went back to these pages and read around a bit and did an apt-get install gnome-power-manager. It seems to have solved the problem. Even Hibernate works - so far. I'm not getting carried away yet - I'll give it time and report back but so far so good. The question is: Why should one have to do this in the first place? -- logout dialog does not offer suspend/hibernate https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118537 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I apologise. Before investigating this further I had had a play trying to 'fix' it so the 'original' install settings as presented here might not be the actual ones. I'm slightly confused that Brasero and other GUI tools were able to write to a blank disk in the first place on a non-root account. Obviously they can but then fall over later. This looks good In the mean time if you look at the mounted volume properties under Gnome... http://www.overkill.talktalk.net/ubuntu/020409/ http://www.overkill.talktalk.net/ubuntu/020409/ You can see that I've thrashed about trying to change the permissions that way. Of course it does not work because the system just picks up on the permissions used to create the volume in the first place. The second picture, of the volume settings, is of interest because the mount options are displayed as ro nosuid nodev noexec and, although I can't fully decipher the meanings is looks like those values relate to the permissions in place when the volume was created and written to, the default install values. Oh, yes I did try playing about with /etc/fstab like this... /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 auto rw,user,noauto,noexec,utf8 0 0 /dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 auto rw,user,noauto,noexec,utf8 0 0 I'm not proud so I am happy to admit that I'm no expert and might not know exactly what all that stuff means. However it does not work. In both cases, via fstab or via Gnome, whatever you try to do gets overruled by what was used to create/write to the volume in the first place. I'll be bold, before I try something, and say it is not really a bug as such, unless, possibly, the ability to write to the disk when the permissions did not allow it is really there. It might be an oversight in setting those default permissions during the install in the first place but they may well be valid choices. Otherwise it might just be irritating. Babble babble. [Bug 213081] Re: CUPS does not print to LPD printer
Hi, Same problem here. I have a Hawking HPS3P with an HP Laserjet 4L attached. Worked great for 3 years, first on Suse, Ubuntu 7.04, then 7.10, using lpd://192.168.0.100/lpt2. Upgraded to 8.04 from 7.10, (Through Update Mgr) on this machine and now lpd is broken. The Ready and Data lights light up on the printer, but the printer does nothing. If I push the panel button a page will print, but only a thin garbled line. From then on, about every 5 to 10 min. the data light comes back on and nothing happens until I press the printer panel button, and then another thin garbled line prints. This goes on forever. I ran the 8.04 live disk and had the same problem. I ran the 7.10 live disk and could print to it no problem. I fired up a spare with 7.10 on it and can print to it no problem. I finally connected the printer directly to the parallel port on this 8.04 machine and can print just fine. Would sure like to get this fixed! I share that printer with 5 machines, and like the fact that no other server computer has to be on in order to print to the 4L. I am still a noob when it comes to error log files and such, mostly because I haven't had any problems with Ubuntu! So if you would like some output file or another, please give me detailed instructions. I did run the "ls -l /usr/lib/cups/backend/lpd" and it had the correct results. [Bug 213081] Re: CUPS does not print to LPD printer
Hi Eric Thanks for the idea. I have already moved the printer to this machine, and am sharing it from here. That will work OK for now until there is a fix. This machines up-time is way longer than the others, so that will work for now. Not quite the central location as before, but hey, I don't think it will kill anyone to walk a few steps further to retrieve their copy! Besides a couple have regular inkjets they use, and are shared as well. No worries. [Bug 157777] Re: gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup
Since upgrading my ancient Gateway 6400 server to Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy), the system has experienced a number of random lockups. I have been working on trying to resolve the problem for a solid week with limited success. My Gateway 6400 server hardware is as follows: * 2x 1GHz Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) CPUs * 1GB ECC memory * 1x LITEON LTN301 ATAPI IDE CD-ROM * 1x Python 06240-XXX 8160 DAT Drive * 4x IBM DPSS-318350N Fast Wide SCSI Drives (ServerWorks SCSI Controller) * Intel(R) PRO/100 NIC * RealTek RTL8139 NIC * Generic embedded VGA display My system is NOT running an Xserver. I re-installed the old 2.6.20-16 kernel that shipped with 7.04 (Feisty). Since then, I have experienced 10 days uptime without a single glitch! I believe that I can confirm this as a kernel issue. Something has changed since the 2.6.20 kernel that causes hard locks on my server. My system logs have not shown a single error and Magic SysRq does not work for a safe re-boot. I also tried a newer 2.6.23-8 kernel and was no better than the 2.6.22-14 kernel that shipped with Gutsy. -- gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have very similar symptoms. (view pdf button hangs Lyx, and I have to forcefully kill the window.) Lyx 1.6.4 on Karmic. I was able to export to plain tex, then pdflatex on the command line a couple of times and it produced correct pdf output, including the embedded pdf file. It gave a warning: pdfTeX warning: pdflatex (file ./filename.pdf): PDF inclusion: found PDF version <1.6>, but at most version <1.4> allowed. So I am about to see if I can convert back to pdf 1.4 and see if that helps. -Keith -- In Karmic, LyX cannot find included pdf file (pdfpages) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/461996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 461996] Re: In Karmic, LyX cannot find included pdf file (pdfpages)
Update: converted to pdf 1.4 using pdf2ps and ps2pdf. That worked to do the conversion and remove the error message, but lyx still hangs and leaves pdflatex running in the background consuming cpu. -Keith -- In Karmic, LyX cannot find included pdf file (pdfpages) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/461996 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 461996] Re: In Karmic, LyX cannot find included pdf file (pdfpages)
As a workaround I converted from pdf to ps to eps (pdf2ps, ps2eps) and then inserted the resulting files. [Bug 461996] Re: In Karmic, LyX cannot find included pdf file (pdfpages)
Even better was to use pdftk to split the few multi-page pdfs into individual pages, and then just inserted individual pages as graphics. The eps was cutting off extra margins for some reason. I also tried changing the resolution in /etc/usplash.conf to 800x600 and 640x480 from 1024x768, but the issue remains. As I said in the last post, I've had the same problem on two systems installing from different sources. One system was a laptop and the 64 bit version of Intrepid and the other system was a desktop with the x86 version. [Bug 270346] Re: Messages are sent with wrong identity when using multiple identities
I can confirm this same problem on Ubuntu 8.10. No matter what identity I choose when writing an email the main identity's email address shows up in the "from" field. I can also confirm that this behavior works properly in the Windows version of Thunderbird. -- Messages are sent with wrong identity when using multiple identities https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/270346 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
