[Bug 118537] Re: logout dialog does not offer suspend/hibernate

2008-08-27 Thread Keith
Tentative success:
AT Groote Schuur Primary School I decided to upgrade to Hardy Heron followed by
an LTSP install on our system and to my disappointment the Quit button did not
work - same old pause for a minute and even freezing up. So I went back to
these pages and read around a bit and did an apt-get install
gnome-power-manager. It seems to have solved the problem. Even Hibernate works
- so far. I'm not getting carried away yet - I'll give it time and report back
but so far so good.

The question is: Why should one have to do this in the first place?

[Bug 236800] [NEW] Podcast feed is not added.

2008-06-02 Thread Keith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ubuntu 8.04
rhythmbox Installed: 0.11.5-0ubuntu6
libtotem-plparser10: Installed: 2.22.3-0ubuntu2

This seems to be exactly like Bug# 202982, but that claims to be
resolved.

I tried to add the following podcast feed:
http://www.podshow.com/feeds/noagenda.xml
I expected a new feed to be added or an error telling me it was not added for
some reason. Neither happened, no new feed, no error, no crash report.

Running Rhythmbox in debug mode produced the same output as described in
Bug# 202982.

Thanks!

[Bug 36855] Re: Username/Password entry confusing for inexperienced users

2008-08-13 Thread Keith
I teach 4 to 6 year old children and have 26 ltsp thin clients using
Edubuntu (Gutsy).

It is a NIGHTMARE having to type in 26 Usernames followed by 26 passwords 5
times a day.
Sure the usernames are b1 to b26 and I have set all passwords to 1.
Nevertheless, before our installation we could login by typing, eg. b1 in the
Username block and press Enter and in we went. No problems.

Does anyone know how I can set this up again? No data is being saved so
I'm not worried about security, etc.. I just want my passwordless
logins

2008-08-18 Thread Keith
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 118537 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118537

I performed the rm -fr ~/.config/autostart/ command.
I also flushed the .config directories (I hope this won't cause problems) as
suggested:

find /home -type d -name .config -exec rm -rf {} \; which did remove
them all

BUT, to my horror, the logout icons still take a minute plus to
respond???

What am I missing?

Not able to logout
PROBLEM SORTED OUT
apt-get upgrade seems to have sorted out the problem.
I have no idea how it did it but the logout is now instantaneous.
However, it is still early so let's do some more testing.
Yep, it seems to work fine now. So apt-get upgrade (not update) seems to have
sorted out this problem.
But many more issues to sort out but they are for another bug report.

No it ain't - It worked well for an hour - instant logout and thereafter it
seems to have gone back to wait for a minute or two to logout.
My procedure at the moment is to do a killall -9 x-session-manager followed by
a script to kill all unwanted and open user processes and program processes.
But is the way to live??? Frustrating is becoming a much used word around here
- helpless is another.

[Bug 236201] Re: Rhythmbox failed to create output image buffer 60x60

I am experiencing the same problem. Rhythmbox was working fine until I
followed the instructions at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/HP2133 for upgrading the video
driver. Also when I load rhythmbox and click on visualization and play
a song it works. As soon as I click on "browse" the song stops playing.

[Bug 200462] Re: Copying Files From CD/DVD Sets Permissions To Read Only

2009-04-02 Thread Keith
Permissions as set up during install.

ke...@keith-desktop:/media$ ls -al

drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2009-04-02 21:44 .

-rw--- 1 root root0 2009-04-02 21:44 .hal-mtab-lock

Change the permissions

ke...@keith-desktop:/media$ sudo chmod 777 cdrom0
ke...@keith-desktop:/media$ sudo chmod 777 cdrom1
ke...@keith-desktop:/media$ ls -al
total 36
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2009-04-02 21:44 .
drwxr-xr-x 20 root root 4096 2009-03-05 13:55 ..

-rw--- 1 root root0 2009-04-02 21:44 .hal-mtab-lock

Looks 'good'. However having written to a rewritable disk using the
unmodified permissions inserting that disk into, in this case cdrom1,
causes this to happen....

ke...@keith-desktop:/media$ ls -al
total 34
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2009-04-02 21:44 .
drwxr-xr-x 20 root root 4096 2009-03-05 13:55 ..
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  root6 2009-03-05 12:10 cdrom -> cdrom0
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 2009-03-05 12:10 cdrom0
dr-xr-xr-x 4 root root 2048 2009-04-02 20:21 cdrom1
drwx-- 3 keith root 8192 1970-01-01 01:00 disk
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 110 2009-04-02 21:44 .hal-mtab
-rw--- 1 root root0 2009-04-02 21:44 .hal-mtab-lock

The previously changed permission for cdrom1 have picked up on the
permissions used during creation of the volume and reverted to their
original settings. I apologise. Before investigating this further I had
had a play trying to 'fix' it so the 'original' install settings as
presented here might not be the actual ones. I'm slightly confused that
Brasero and other GUI tools were able to write to a blank disk in the
first place on a non-root account. Obviously they can but then fall over
later. As I say, sorry, I haven't been very stringent about the way I've
investigated this. I've been typical me and just started mashing about
with things.

If I remove the disk then

ke...@keith-desktop:/media$ ls -al
total 36
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4096 2009-04-02 21:44 .
drwxr-xr-x 20 root root 4096 2009-03-05 13:55 ..
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  root6 2009-03-05 12:10 cdrom -> cdrom0
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 2009-03-05 12:10 cdrom0
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 2009-03-05 12:10 cdrom1
drwx-- 3 keith root 8192 1970-01-01 01:00 disk
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 110 2009-04-02 21:44 .hal-mtab
-rw--- 1 root root0 2009-04-02 21:44 .hal-mtab-lock

The permissions revert to the ones that I changed them to. This looks
good

In the mean time if you look at the mounted volume properties under
Gnome...

http://www.overkill.talktalk.net/ubuntu/020409/
http://www.overkill.talktalk.net/ubuntu/020409/

You can see that I've thrashed about trying to change the permissions
that way. Of course it does not work because the system just picks up on
the permissions used to create the volume in the first place.

The second picture, of the volume settings, is of interest because the
mount options are displayed as ro nosuid nodev noexec and, although I
can't fully decipher the meanings is looks like those values relate to
the permissions in place when the volume was created and written to, the
default install values.

Oh, yes I did try playing about with /etc/fstab like this...

/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 auto rw,user,noauto,noexec,utf8 0 0
/dev/scd1 /media/cdrom1 auto rw,user,noauto,noexec,utf8 0 0

I'm not proud so I am happy to admit that I'm no expert and might not
know exactly what all that stuff means. However it does not work. In
both cases, via fstab or via Gnome, whatever you try to do gets
overruled by what was used to create/write to the volume in the first
place.

I'll be bold, before I try something, and say it is not really a bug as
such, unless, possibly, the ability to write to the disk when the
permissions did not allow it is really there. It might be an oversight
in setting those default permissions during the install in the first
place but they may well be valid choices. Otherwise it might just be
irritating. Babble babble.

OK, now I will try something. At the moment, nothing in the drive I
have...

ke...@keith-desktop:/media$ ls -al

[Bug 408678] [NEW] Hulu audio doesn't work in 9.04 with flash player

2009-08-03 Thread keith
Public bug reported:

Audio works fine using flash on all other websites, liveleak, youtube,

Audio does not work only on Hulu. Get video, but no audio. What is Hulu
doing differently? Tried several different Hulu videos.

Have all the latest updates (49 of them I think) as of August 3rd. Also
updated Adobe Flash and rebooted. Didn't work with the previous flash
version and doesn't work with this one. In fact, hulu audio has never
worked on this machine.

[Bug 213081] Re: CUPS does not print to LPD printer

2008-05-04 Thread Keith
Hi,

Same problem here. I have a Hawking HPS3P with an HP Laserjet 4L
attached. Worked great for 3 years, first on Suse, Ubuntu 7.04, then
7.10, using lpd://192.168.0.100/lpt2. Upgraded to 8.04 from 7.10,
(Through Update Mgr) on this machine and now lpd is broken. The Ready
and Data lights light up on the printer, but the printer does nothing.
If I push the panel button a page will print, but only a thin garbled
line. From then on, about every 5 to 10 min. the data light comes back
on and nothing happens until I press the printer panel button, and then
another thin garbled line prints. This goes on forever.

I ran the 8.04 live disk and had the same problem. I ran the 7.10 live
disk and could print to it no problem. I fired up a spare with 7.10 on
it and can print to it no problem. I finally connected the printer
directly to the parallel port on this 8.04 machine and can print just
fine.

Would sure like to get this fixed! I share that printer with 5 machines,
and like the fact that no other server computer has to be on in order to
print to the 4L. I am still a noob when it comes to error log files and
such, mostly because I haven't had any problems with Ubuntu! So if you
would like some output file or another, please give me detailed
instructions. I did run the "ls -l /usr/lib/cups/backend/lpd" and it had
the correct results.

Thanks!

[Bug 213081] Re: CUPS does not print to LPD printer

2008-05-06 Thread Keith
Hi Eric

Thanks for the idea. I have already moved the printer to this machine,
and am sharing it from here. That will work OK for now until there is a
fix. This machines up-time is way longer than the others, so that will
work for now. Not quite the central location as before, but hey, I don't
think it will kill anyone to walk a few steps further to retrieve their
copy! Besides a couple have regular inkjets they use, and are shared as
well. No worries.

Thanks

Keith

[Bug 181900] Re: Evolution-Exchange does not really sync with exchange server

2008-01-11 Thread Keith
I have a similar situation but when viewing mail messages through
webmail. I'm able to fix the mismatch messages by deleting the
.evolution directory

This are the steps that specifically causes this scenario with me:
1. Open evolution to download list of messages
2. Close evolution
3. Login to Exchange webmail
4. Move/delete messages from a directory
5. Log out
6. Start evolution

The email list still appears as it was before executing step 2. If there
are new messages, they do not show up. However, the alert icon appears
and the directory is in bold and it's showing the number of new mail
messages. I go back to webmail after closing evolution to confirm that
there is indeed a new message.

[Bug 157777] Re: gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup

2007-12-17 Thread Keith
Since upgrading my ancient Gateway 6400 server to Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy),
the system has experienced a number of random lockups. I have been
working on trying to resolve the problem for a solid week with limited
success.

My Gateway 6400 server hardware is as follows:

* 2x 1GHz Intel Pentium III (Coppermine) CPUs
* 1GB ECC memory
* 1x LITEON LTN301 ATAPI IDE CD-ROM
* 1x Python 06240-XXX 8160 DAT Drive
* 4x IBM DPSS-318350N Fast Wide SCSI Drives (ServerWorks SCSI Controller)
* Intel(R) PRO/100 NIC
* RealTek RTL8139 NIC
* Generic embedded VGA display

My system is NOT running an Xserver. I re-installed the old 2.6.20-16
kernel that shipped with 7.04 (Feisty). Since then, I have experienced
10 days uptime without a single glitch! I believe that I can confirm
this as a kernel issue. Something has changed since the 2.6.20 kernel
that causes hard locks on my server. My system logs have not shown a
single error and Magic SysRq does not work for a safe re-boot. I also
tried a newer 2.6.23-8 kernel and was no better than the 2.6.22-14
kernel that shipped with Gutsy.

[Bug 107901] nautilus-wallpaper

[Bug 112143] nfs partition fails to mount at boot

2007-05-03 Thread keith
Public bug reported:

My nfs partition in /etc/fstab fails to mount at boot. My /etc/fstab
line is

  par.ti.com:/u1/home/keith /par/home/keith nfs rw,hard,intr 0 0

I looked in mountall.sh and I think this is the line in question:

  mount -a -t noproc,nfs,nfs4,smbfs,cifs,ncp,ncpfs,coda,ocfs2,gfs

After I boot and run the mount command above by hand, it does not
mount the nfs partition. If I remove the noproc string then it does
mount the nfs partition. I found a debian bug report 381825 with the
same issue where it did not mount the ocfs2 partition unless you
removed the noproc string.

My workaround is to add the following to /etc/rc.local:

  mount -a -t nfs

I have had this issue in 6.10 and 7.04.

[Bug 461996] Re: In Karmic, LyX cannot find included pdf file (pdfpages)

2010-01-07 Thread Keith
I have very similar symptoms. (view pdf button hangs Lyx, and I have to
forcefully kill the window.)

Lyx 1.6.4 on Karmic. I was able to export to plain tex, then pdflatex
on the command line a couple of times and it produced correct pdf
output, including the embedded pdf file. It gave a warning:

pdfTeX warning: pdflatex (file ./filename.pdf): PDF inclusion: found PDF
version <1.6>, but at most version <1.4> allowed.

So I am about to see if I can convert back to pdf 1.4 and see if that
helps.

Update: converted to pdf 1.4 using pdf2ps and ps2pdf. That worked to
do the conversion and remove the error message, but lyx still hangs and
leaves pdflatex running in the background consuming cpu.

[Bug 461996] Re: In Karmic, LyX cannot find included pdf file (pdfpages)

2010-01-08 Thread Keith
Even better was to use pdftk to split the few multi-page pdfs into
individual pages, and then just inserted individual pages as graphics.
The eps was cutting off extra margins for some reason.

Hope these ideas help someone else.

2018-08-20 Thread Keith
Is there a way to re-create the resume file? The commands I mentioned
earlier removed it, so I can't try the edit option.

[Bug 1572801] Re: Ubuntu 16.04 Unity desktop uses much more ram than Ubuntu 15.10

2017-02-20 Thread Keith
I did have bootchart installed. So I removed and purged it and went as
far as moving the hidden .bootchart directory to the trash (couldn't
delete it) and then restarting the computer. So far this seems to have
resolved the problem for me. I'm no longer seeing the slow but steady
increase in memory usage. So my thanks to Jacek Kończewski for his
comment above (#47).

[Bug 84467] Re: md5sum can't read md5 files with CRLF line terminators

2017-02-16 Thread Keith
As far as I can tell,
sed 's/\r$//' checksums.md5 | sed 's/\r/\n'/ | md5sum -c
works exactly as expected. If I knew where to find the source for this, I'm so
annoyed I might try to decipher it. I'm not very good, but it seems like it
would translate.

[Bug 578673] Re: [arrandale] Resume doesn't work on a Latitude E6410

2010-11-27 Thread Keith
FYI, I also suffer from the suspend/hibernate crash issue, (I use a Dell
Inspiron).

I recently installed the suspend tool found in the Ubuntu software
center and my issue has been solved. I'd recommend the debuggers to
cross reference that tool to see if it sheds any light on the situation
and for those of you suffering from the issue, I'd try the tool to see
if it resolves your problem.

On Ubuntu Software Center, select "system" and search "suspend"

"Smartly puts your computer to sleep (suspend RAM or disk)"

[Bug 1512429] Re: Clementine and Exaile are crashing when trying to play aac (.m4a) files

2015-12-17 Thread Keith
I'm using Ubuntu 15.10 - Wily and Clementine Version 1.2.3

Whenever I try to play an "m4a" file, Clementine crashes and closes. I
am able to play m4a file with all other music players.

A large number of my music file are in m4a format. Is there a fix or
workaround available? I like Clementine and would like to continue using
it but am unable to at this time.

[Bug 1168293] Re: "No Certificate" dialog not responding

Here's a work around

open a termina (Alt+F2; gnome-terminal)

cd /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections

then edit the "SSID" profile as following

[Bug 716790] [NEW] Tree Browser plugin crashes on "Hide object Files"

2011-02-10 Thread Keith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: geany-plugin-treebrowser

Initial state:

[X] Show bars
[X] Show bars at top (Require plugin restart)
[ ] Show hidden files
[ ] Hide object files
[ ] Reverse filter
[X] Follow current document
[ ] Single click, open document and focus it
[ ] Double click open directory
[X] On expand, refresh directory view
[X] On delete file, close it if is open
[X] Show tree lines

Upon checking Hide object files and clicking Apply, the program crashes.
When attempting to enable the Tree Browser plugin again, the program
crashes. The only way to get the program to operate normally is to
remove the ~/.config/geany/plugins/treebrowser/ directory.

[Bug 672210] [NEW] Dell Inspiron Crashes from Suspend/Hibernate

2010-11-07 Thread Keith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

If I close the lid to my laptop and open it... I can operate the machine
fine for a few moments, then the machine will randomly reboot (I tend to
notice this when I go to wesbsites that contain Flash, i.e. facebook
games).

If I manually hibernate, my screen saver pops up for a few seconds then
the machine shuts down. I had no problems on lucid 10.04. I have tried
using the 10.04 Kernal with Meerkat but the problem still persists.

[Bug 672873] [NEW] Users and Groups fails to launch

2010-11-08 Thread Keith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

Trying to launch the Users and Groups - the window bar shows a window (but
nothing on screen) for the users and groups, then it disappears. If I try to
launch users-admin from a terminal I get the following error:
"GLib-GIO-ERROR **: Settings schema 'org.gnome.system-tools.users' is not
installed

This is on a new install on a Mac Powerbook G4 17" 1.3GHz system.
Ubuntu 10.10 for PowerPC installed from CD.

This occurred from first login, and after all updates were applied. I
have tried reinstalling the system-tools but to no avail.

[Bug 672873] Re: users-admin GSettings schema missing

2010-11-09 Thread Keith
yes the /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/org.gnome.system-tools.gschema.xml
file is present and when I run "grep org.gnome.system-tools.users
/usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled" I get the message "Binary
file /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas/gschemas.compiled matches"

This is the only place that I have noticed any weird so far, but I am
fairly new to Linux and just trying to get my feet wet.

[Bug 672873] Re: users-admin GSettings schema missing

2010-11-10 Thread Keith
When I run 'apt-get install --reinstall libglib2.0-0' I get the following
error:
"E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?"

When I enter 'evince' from the terminal I get: "Glib-GIO-ERROR **: Setting
schema 'org.gnome.Evince.Default' is not installed
aborting...
Aborted"

Could it be a problem with my install media? For the record, I
downloaded
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/maverick/release/ubuntu-10.10
-desktop-powerpc.iso and burned to a CD using Nero (following the
overburn instructions from one of the Ubuntu forums, since the image is
710 MB). The CD seemed to verify ok when I ran the verify disc. Would
it be worth a try to download and try reinstalling from a different
source? If so which source should I try?

Thanks again for the help.

Tried that, still getting the same errors. The 'sudo apt-get install

[Bug 1938953] Re: virtualbox-dkms 6.1.16-dfsg-6~ubuntu1.20.04.2: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2021-08-23 Thread Keith
For anyone who sees this, it is a RAM issue. For me, like others here,
the hardware is the cause.

Lack of RAM. I installed another 16 GB and my RAM usage went away.
Freezes and random crashes stopped. The lack of RAM will also cause
PulseAudio to distort, prompting a -k.

Hopefully this helps someone.

[Bug 271376] Re: Intrepid: Edubuntu has no Usplash

2008-11-11 Thread Keith Moseley
I've had no splash with edubuntu on two different systems. The first
one I installed edubuntu-artwork-splash with synaptic and the second I
installed from the edubuntu cd. Reinstalling the package doesn't work.
I've switched the splash image back to original ubuntu one, which works
fine.

I'm going to play around with this a bit more and see what I can figure
out, but I think something is wrong with the 8.10 version of edubuntu-
splash.so.

Regards.

[Bug 271376] Re: Intrepid: Edubuntu has no Usplash

2008-11-12 Thread Keith Moseley
I was wrong about that. The issue isn't with the edubuntu-splash. I
installed 4 other splash images via synaptic, but the only one that
works is the default ubuntu one. I also tried changing the resolution
in /etc/usplash.conf to 800x600 and 640x480 from 1024x768, but the issue
remains.

As I said in the last post, I've had the same problem on two systems
installing from different sources. One system was a laptop and the 64
bit version of Intrepid and the other system was a desktop with the x86
version.

Regards.

I can confirm this same problem on Ubuntu 8.10. No matter what identity
I choose when writing an email the main identity's email address shows
up in the "from" field. I can also confirm that this behavior works
properly in the Windows version of Thunderbird.
