[Bug 107000] Re: update-manager should make sure that it is uptodate before a dist-upgrade even if edgy-updates is not available

2009-01-30 Thread Kai Schroeder
I have no idea how I can test that. So you have to ask Michael Vogt or another
developer of update-manager if this is still an issue. A wild guess from me
would be this has not been addressed, yet.

[Bug 67144] Re: upgrade from dapper to edgy fails, probably because of third party compiz repository

2006-10-20 Thread Kai Schroeder
the following workaround fixed it for me: (warning to non-developers: do not
use this workaround unless you know exactly what you are doing)

remove all 3rd party repositories from sources.list
sudo apt-get remove libgl1-mesa
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop nvidia-glx

what that basically does is, revert lots of packages to their original
ubuntu versions (and remove all open gl applications). after the apt-get
remove the system doesn't even have gdm installed and the proprietary
driver (nvidia-glx in this case) has to be reinstalled manually.

[Bug 69455] Re: [SRU] for oprofile, edgy-updates: bashism in oprofile's opcontrol script prevents user from setting any events

2007-10-18 Thread Kai Schroeder
I have applied the same fix as for Feisty in the attached debdiff. As
this is my first patch please have a closer look at it. I have been told
on #ubuntu-motu that bash is essential and does not have to be specified
in Depends, so that part of the Feisty patch is missing.

[Bug 148021] live cd does not show kernel panic messages

2007-10-02 Thread Kai Schroeder
Public bug reported:

The current Desktop / Live CD does not show kernel panic messages. My system
does not boot without adding "noapic" to the boot line. Ubuntu 6.10 shows the
corresponding kernel panic which told me to to "try booting with the 'noapic'
option". The current Gutsy beta just hangs showing the "kernel alive" message
but fails to provide that useful information.

[Bug 148073] totem plugin going fullscreen freezes computer

2007-10-02 Thread Kai Schroeder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

When compiz is enabled, switching to fullscreen in the totem firefox plugin
freezes the computer. The plugin actually does not switch to fullscreen -
firefox is still shown. the video window is not updated anymore, sound is still
playing though. I can still move the mouse cursor but I cannot use the computer
anymore. All keyboard input is disabled (like ctrl-alt-f1 or alt-tab). I can
only press the hardware reset button to continue work. I have verified that
this does not happen when metacity is used as the window manager.

[Bug 148073] Re: totem plugin going fullscreen does not work (was: freezes computer)

2007-10-03 Thread Kai Schroeder
Hm, although it was perfectly reproducible after several reboots yesterday, I
can't reproduce the freezing now either. Today the plugin shows the video in a
small window including decorations when I want to go fullscreen. Once, directly
after switching to compiz from metacity, it even worked as expected. I use the
nvidia-glx-new driver on a Geforce 8600 gts. The video player itself works fine.

[Bug 213637] [NEW] session language change after update to hardy

Public bug reported:

I have just updated a computer from gutsy to hardy. On my first boot into hardy

I still have this problem (huge fonts on launchpad.net) on a computer I have

[Bug 217223] [NEW] clicking logout button disables mouse input / freezes computer

Public bug reported:

When I click on the logout button in the gnome panel or on Quit in the System

anything anymore - the logout window does not appear. The system monitor applet
still shows activity when that happens. I can also press ctrl - alt -backspace

Looks like this is related to the Power Management Daemon. When the daemon is

In previous versions of nautilus using gnome-vfs, I could create a copy of a
file on the desktop by selecting it and pressing "ctrl-c" - "ctrl-v".
Previously, that created a file called something like "Copy of file.ext". Now
in Hardy I am asked if I want to skip the operation, cancel (what's the
difference to skip in this case btw.?), replace or - "replace all" and "skip
all" (those last two options should not be shown anyway when only a single file
is on the clipboard). Even worse, all these buttons are overlayed after a few
seconds by a dialog called "File operations" telling me 'Copying "file.ext" to
"Desktop"' - this dialog includes a button showing a white cross on a red
background and it has the usual cancel "cross" of the window decorator - both
do not react to any input and do not cancel anything - I have to click on the
original dialog to bring it back to the foreground. What should have happened
instead is that I do not get any dialog / question at all and a copy of my file
called "file.ext" is created as "Copy of file.ext".

OK, yes - I saw that :). But I cannot reproduce that here because that page
looks different on my computer. Any other page with that problem? Btw. - which
version of the package do you use? Beta 2 or already Beta 3 (which hit the
repositories yesterday).

[Bug 128803] Re: [Gutsy] very slow gnome startup

2008-02-14 Thread Kai Schroeder
I have created a graph of a login to gnome in hardy using the method described
here:
http://www.gnome.org/~federico/news-2008-02.html
I have applied the patch there to the ubuntu version of gnome-panel (I have
actually dropped ubuntu patch 16_* because I was to lazy to have a look why
that patch could not be applied to the instrumented source).

I have done the profiling using a freshly created user and I have
created the graph during the second login to that users profile. I have
stopped shortly after I had a usable gnome-terminal after about 60
seconds.

Looks like there is something strange going on with pulseaudio and esd
at the beginning of startup. Compiz wastes a large amount of time
finding out the current configuration using glxinfo and nvidia-settings.
There are lots of top_panel size requests, I have not yet looked what
that means exactly, though. It would also be interesting to know what
happens at second 26 - apt-cache and modinfo take a huge amount of time
there which is probably not needed at that point of time. I don't know
how useful this is, but perhaps someone gets an idea.

And attached the strace logfile which I have used to create that graph.

it says there for the esd pulseaudio wrapper
8107 1203029028.058727 read(18, "[esd]\n# autospawning is not reco"..., 4096)
= 368
