[Bug 245103] [NEW] Won't select multiple selects

2008-07-03 Thread JoseLVG
Public bug reported:

A page containing a select with multiple selectable options won't work.

The options are selected by clicking on them but they are deselected as
soon as you click out of the select widget or do the submit. The result
is that NO options are ever selected when the form is submitted,
rendering the form useless.

This DOES NOT happen in Windows Firefox 3.0. I guess is not a Ubuntu bug
but a firefox-3-linux one, but could not find where to report to Mozilla
directly.

Re: [Bug 245103] Re: Won't select multiple selects

2008-07-03 Thread JoseLVG
Hi,

Here are the steps:

1) Save this as *select.html*:

*
Español (es)
English (en)
Português (pt)

*

2) This is a multiple select input widget, you shuld be able to select all
languages, 2, 1 or none.

*EXPECTED RESULT:* Open *select.html* it with konqueror or Firefox 2 and you
will see the *correct/expected behavior; when you select one, two or three
options and click outside the select widget the options you selected remains
selected*. Note as well that 2 options (Español and English) are selected
when you load the page.

*RESULT:* Open it now with Firefox 3.0 to see the error; *you can select
multiple options as before but they get deselected as the form loses focus
(or you click outside)*. Note as well that the 2 options that should be
preselected when you load the form are NOT preselected.

This happens in a kubuntu 8.04:
$ uname -a
Linux TyS14LNX 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

$ apt-cache policy firefox
firefox:
  Instalados: 3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

Thanks for your quick responses,

[Bug 253246] [NEW] suspend not working in e512+nvidia 7600gt

2008-07-30 Thread JoseLVG
Public bug reported:

My ubuntu Hardy x86_64 can't suspend a Dell E521 with a NVidia 7600gt.

(I mention the NVidia card model because this card is not the ATI that
usually comes with a Dell E521 and I know that most suspend problems are
caused by ATI or NVidia drivers)

When I click on the suspend button the screen boes blank but the machine
never goes to sleep.

This is with the POST_VIDEO=false option at /etc/default/acpi-support

"NvAGP" "1" in /etc/x11/xorg.conf

Anyway I moved to Ubuntu (which does not have this problem once you force it

[Bug 261391] [NEW] Network Manager unable to resume network after suspend

2008-08-25 Thread JoseLVG
Public bug reported:

My system is a Dell Optiplex GX270 connected to a wired 1Gbit network
thought the e1000 driver. I am using an up-to-date version of Ubuntu
Hardy.

I suspend to RAM but Network-Manager is unable to bring back the
network. At syslog it complains that "no dhcpoffers" were received but
if you open a terminal and do dhclient, the ip is obtained correctly.

Steps to reproduce on a Dell Optiplex GX270 with a e1000 driver with
Ubuntu Hardy:

1) Suspend the system.
2) Resume by pressing the power button.
3) Check the network (after typing the password to unblock your X session)

Expected result:
The network should be working.

Result:
The network DOES NOT work.

BUT if you do a "sudo dhclient" in a terminal window the network becomes
ready SO Networkmanager IS NOT DOING IT IN THE PROPER WAY.

[Bug 261391] Re: Network Manager unable to resume network after suspend

2008-08-25 Thread JoseLVG
More on this...

Even "sudo /etc/init.d/network start" DOES NOT WORK!!!

After getting the IP you can drop it succesfully with "sudo
/etc/init.d/network stop" but IT WON'T you it back with "sudo
/etc/init.d/network start", you HAVE TO DO "sudo dhclient"

Why? Why does dhclient work and dhclient called from ifup DOES NOT? WHAT
IS THE DIFFERENCE?

dhclient is not good enough because I still have to set up some static
routes manually also, while network ifup will set these routes for me.

[Bug 261391] Re: Network Manager unable to resume network after suspend

2008-08-26 Thread JoseLVG
Found it!

Still do not know with dhclient works but network ifup does not but...

I found out that network manager was NOT really managing my eth0 device
due to my /etc/network/interfaces config. I changed it to:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

#iface eth0 inet dhcp
#auto eth0

So that NOW it NetworkManager will manage the interface.

The interface was UP by NetworkManager now BUT still have some problems because
I need some custom config for my network:
1) Static routes
2) Domain searches (first rflabs.com and then rfranco.com)

For the time being I just added a couple of scripts at /etc/network/if-up.d/:
1) static-routes:
#!/bin/bash
route add -net 192.168.199.0/24 gw 10.90.12.61 dev eth0

2) resolvfix:
#!/bin/bash
echo "" >> /etc/resolv.conf
echo "#resolvfix at /etc/network/if-up.d/resolv.fix" >> /etc/resolv.conf
echo "domain rfranco.com" >> /etc/resolv.conf
echo "search rflabs.com rfranco.com" >> /etc/resolv.conf

Is there a cleaner way to set this custom network settings?
Do the Gnome/Kde GUIs allow to do this?
Are there plans for them to do it ever?

Correct me if I am wrong but...

Can you do GoogleEarth, Compiz, glxgears, or any 3D in general with the VESA

I think you can't, so giving up 3D acceleration because of a crapy driver is
not the solution (not for me at least)
I prefer to have compiz more or less working and low glxgears FPS while I
investigate why Fedora 10 hasn't got this problems.

If the performance drop is due to the TTM/GEM migration then It seems
that there is NO solution to this for Intrepid as far as I could read on
the net.

(If someone has more information, please let us all know)

The GEM bits are going to the 2.6.28 kernel NOW, and they will be stable
when that kernel version become the stale one.

What I don't understand is...
WHY do they decided to drop TTM BEFORE GEM was working?

[Usually, you don't break things like this before having a decent
replacement. ]

Re: [Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2008-11-26 Thread JoseLVG
Kernel 2.6.28 is not stable yet in kernel.org:
http://www.kernel.org/

And I guess that Ubuntu 8.10 wiill only come with 2.6.27 kernels packages.
To test GEM I presume that one should compile some 2.6.28 on his/her own and
try it out. This is quite time consuming, specially guessing the correct
config settings for the kernel compilation. (Or is it there a tool to port
the ubuntu (or array.org for eees) kernel's config to version 2.6.28?)

Then you can download and install the latest unstable GEM drivers from intel
driver website:
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/download.html

2009-05-12 Thread JoseLVG
Confirmed,
*Jaunty x86_64 with Nvidia driver 180 on a Dell E521+Nvidia 7600GT CANNOT
SUSPEND+RESUME*

In fact, I think it does not even finish the suspend command correctly,
because the power light does not start blinking and the CPU box makes still
a lot of noise. Pressing the power button does nothing, there is no a ttempt
to wake up. You end up pressing the off button to hard reset the machine.
This behaviour is exactly the same as with Intrepid and Hardy.

[It is so sad that still suspend is not supported in this not so new/not so
old machine. It is probably true that we, the linuxers are a bit
machochists.]

Re: [Bug 252094] Re: MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-01-28 Thread JoseLVG
The problem with this is that you started testing glxgears because, for
instance, GoogleEarth started to crown when in the previous Linux version it
flyed (my case, good GE performance with Xandros on my eee and unsuable GE
on ubuntu 8.10).

You end up with some idea of the performance loss when they say that Ubuntu
7.04 could make glxgears achieve 1500FPS and now it done only 50FPS.

The question now is, how are we going to know if the performance of later
versions is enhanced or not if we don't measure it with the same tools? Does
anyone have numbers FPS on Tremulous or some other 3D intensive app as far
as Ubuntu 7.04 so we can compare with 9.04 (without the vblank sync thing
that makes numbers up)?

(The vblank sync that reduces Jaunty FPS might be a clever thing for normal
use and energy-wise, but is it not very useful when comparing different
driver versions for performance)

Re: [Bug 252094] Re: MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-05-04 Thread JoseLVG
Jaunty results on a eee 901 with 'out-of-thebox' configuration.

*NO COMPIZ: glxgears 600fps+ NO rendering errors, GoogleEarth smooth (sun &
atmosphere off) ppracer 18fps

COMPIZ ON: glxgears 570fps + rendering erros when moving the window,
GoogleEarth less smooth (sun & atmosphere off) ppracer 18fps
*
In my particular case *(eee 901 Intel 965GME)* performance seems better for
Jaunty 9.04 than for Ibex 8.10 (for instance, I could not use GoogleEarth in
Ibex at all)

[How can I check whether my out of the box config is using EXA or UXA?]

[Bug 294034] [NEW] GoogleEarth unusably-slow on eee 901

2008-11-05 Thread JoseLVG
Public bug reported:

I am a EEE 901 user with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex (v8.10).

GoogleEarth was properly working on Xandros, but it goes horribly slow
in Ubuntu, and I don't know why.

I followed with NO LUCK these instructions (that I think are for a eee 701, a
less powerfull machine):
http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:fixgoogleearthspeed
In my case...

1) I don't see the "drmWaitVBlank" errors neither before or after
applying the patch BUT the application is unusably slow both before and
after patching.

2) In my case there is NO atmosphere option in GoogleEarth configuration
to change from true to false, so I created it (to false) and I get the
feeling that it doesn't change anything (I think the atmosphere is there
still).

What can I do now? Any ideas?

[Bug 294775] [NEW] Force gnome to open PDFs with acroread (or anyother BUT evince!)

2008-11-06 Thread JoseLVG
Public bug reported:

There seems there is no way to FORCE Gnome to open PDFs with other
application than evince.

I try to force using Acrobat Reader isntead of evince by changinf both:

/etc/gnome/defaults.list
AND
~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list

And the result is that some apps like thunderbird, chose Acrobat instead
of evince conrrectly but both the desktop (GNOME) and nautilus open the
PDF file ONLY with evince by default.

How can this be changed?

[Bug 245103] Re: Won't select multiple selects

2008-07-12 Thread JoseLVG
Easier reproduction steps:

1) To see the proper behaviour open this URL with konqueror or firefox
2:

http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/forms/_SELECT_MULTIPLE.html

Select for instance "mushrooms" AND "peppers" AND "onions" and click
submit, you'll see you selected the 3 vegetables.

2) Now open the same URL with Firefox 3
(http://www.htmlcodetutorial.com/forms/_SELECT_MULTIPLE.html)

Select the same 3 vegetables or any other combination and click submit,
before the submit is executed the selections you made are deleted or
reseted and cleared.

It seems that the options are submitted in the end, but the selections
are visually deleted so the user might think they are unselected.

This bug maybe only present at the ubuntu packaged version for KDE (with

In the same machine a version downloaded from Firefox website DOES NOT
present this problem and selected items don't get unmarked.

It also seems that checkboxes don't get grey when they get the focus in
this Firefox provided version (3.0.1) (BUT the 3.0.1 at Kubuntu's does
have the problem though)

[Bug 245103] Re: Won't select multiple selects

2008-07-22 Thread JoseLVG
Definitely it's a widget-set problem on Kubuntu.

At work I installed the 32bit version of Firefox 3.0.1 from the Firefox
site and the problem persists (the one I tested in my previous comment
was the 64bit version at home)

The only difference between the 64bit version that works and the 32bit
that fails (both from Mozilla corp. and from kubuntu) is that for some
reason the 64bit defaults to a ugly widget-set (with suqare button
edges) that RENDERS the selections and checkboxes correctly while the
32bit uses the same Kubuntu provided look & feel (round-nice button
edges) than the Kubuntu installed version, so it fails to render
selections and checkboxes correctly when focused.

And I mean the widget-set, not the theme. If I download and set a
different theme the shape of the buttons, scrollbars... (the widgets)
does not change, only the icons change but the problem persists if the
widget-set is the Kubuntu one.

So... (while this gets fixed, if it's ever done...)

How do I change Firefox widget set?

Wow!

Luciano: That is backports for Jaunty 9.04or just plain Ibex 8.10?
(I guess you need a 2.6.28 kernel anyway)

What it your chipset?
I wonder if my eee 901 with Intel GME 945 will benefit from this improvement
also.

Still 700FPS is less than half the 1500FPS this driver achieved in the "good
old TTM days", so I wonder how it is GEM an improvement or if there are
still many performance gains to come.

Re: [Bug 252094] Re: [i965, etc.] Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-01-12 Thread JoseLVG
I also agree, but there is nothing we can do, this bug report is just a
place to complain.

Some time ago (probably a year ago), someone or a group of people at intel
driver development, decided that they will throw away legacy driver code
(that was performing without so much user complaints as the current
releases) while they rewrote it. They thought is was a good idea. They were
too much confident they would fix it quickly enough before everybody
noticed... but they were wrong.

They should have done as you allways do this things, that is:

   1. You maintain the old stuff while you write the new driver.
   2. When the new driver is stable (and currently IT ISN'T!) then you
change the defaults to point to the new driver and leave the old one as a
   fallback.
   3. Later, when the old stuff is no longer mainstream or obsolete and the
new stuff is rock-solid, then, and only then, you get rid of the old stuff
and leave the new code alone.

I know it is painful (as a developer I really know it is) and it may sound
old-fashion, but it is more practical in the end.

But they decided to take the risk, and as Murphy law states, "what could go
wrong went wrong". We may have drivers performing decently again in 2011 or
so, (by the time Google Chrome Linux will be delivered) in the meantime we
can just complain or... if you know graphics development, retro-backport the
old TTM code (or whatever it was called) in new kernel and distro
releases... it will probably take less time to do than fixing current GEM
drivers.

[Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2008-12-12 Thread JoseLVG
I followed MPCs instructions on a eee 901 with an intel 945.

It was a complete disaster, it did not fix a thing. FPS seemed slightly
higher (600-700 instead of 500-600), but there were the same rendering
errors when moving the glxgears window around.

I lost array.org's wired and wireless network and lost the keyboard
settings so I couldn't even check if a was running the proper intel
driver and drm versions. GoogleEarth seemed a bit smother but all text
were totaly lost so it was still unusable.

I totally discorage other eee users to try this if unsure. I guess we
have to wait for Ubuntu's or array.orgs fixes.

Latest Jaunty tested on an Asus eee901 (945GME I think)

Results:
- glxgears arround 600fps (not very spectacular)
- SAME RENDERING ERRORS as usual when moving the glxgears window arround
(compiz effects on)

I think Jaunty will still have this problems.
(If it takes them so much time to stabilize this code... maybe this driver
rewrite was not good idea at all)

I tried it (ForceEnablePipeA + UXA) on a eee 901 with 8.10 Intrepid Ibex and
it did not fix anything.

My eee 901 has an Intel 945GME, no one else has this chipset?

Re: [Bug 252094] Re: MASTER: Poor graphics performance on Intel

2009-04-13 Thread JoseLVG
Tried ForceEnablePipeA + UXA on Juanty beta over an eee 901. Results:

- Rendering errors on Compiz went away.
- Glxgears FPSs dro from 600 to 150.
- GoogleEarth crash due to libssl 0.9.8 error (couldn't test performance)
- Planetpenguin racer: not very smooth 3-4 fps at 1024x600
- Tremulous didn't start either. (Maybe because testing jaunty on a
pendrive?)

Not very impressive performance after all.

[Bug 228621] [NEW] Firefox 3 (Beta 5) Won't let me print

2008-05-09 Thread JoseLVG
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When trying to print (File->Print...) the dialog disables the print
button for all printers but the "print to file option". No message or
reason is given neither in Firefox's GUI nor in the the console
(executing it manuallly from konsole). Therefore I can't even try to
print. (I have to open the same URL on Konqueror that prints ok with
kprinter)

It happens on a kubuntu 8.04 in all users (so it is not a corrupted user
config profile)

Re: [Bug 182114] Re: k3b: cdrom not recognized after burning

2008-01-19 Thread JoseLVG
Thanks,

At least now I know it's a k3b error and not a weird config in my system.
And also the hdparm will be very useful to avoid reset the PC everytime I
burn a CD/DVD.

(I assume the command lets you use the CD again, even if k3b is still not
able to re-burn another one)

[Bug 182114] k3b: cdrom not recognized after burning

2008-01-11 Thread JoseLVG
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

When I need to write a DVD-R:
1) I plug it in and k3b recognizes it as a blank DVD and allows me to burn it
with the desired contents.
2) After a succesful burn of teh DVD, the disc is not recognized by the system.
Even if I eject it and put it in again it does not get recognized.

No messages show up in dmesg or syslog. Other CDs get recognized but not the
DVD I just wrote.
The strange thing is that the DVD is burn succesfully and can be played in
other computers.
My system is a Dell dimension e521 with Kubuntu Gutsy.
