I still experience sound latency in Jaunty (x86). Do these changes still have
to be applied to Ubuntu? If so, when is this going to happen?

[Bug 294666] [NEW] PulseAudio causes sound latency in 8.10

2008-11-06 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Since I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 (i386), I experience noticeable sound latency
in all games I've tried thus far.
In 8.04 and earlier sound in, for example, the games Briquolo and Pingus was
perfectly in sync. Now in 8.10 it lags about half a second behind.

I can solve the latency problem by issuing the following command in the
terminal:
sudo killall pulseaudio

But as you can understand I'd prefer a somewhat neater solution...

2009-01-10 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Interesting...
I used UNetbootin to put a Live version (daily build) on a flash drive.
I noticed that the pause menu popped up when my screensaver kicked in. I play
the game with a gamepad, and apparently gamepad input doesn't register as user
activity. I will test if in 8.04 it's also the screen saver that's causing the
pause menu to appear. To be continued...

The strange thing is not all applications seem to be affected by this.
Media players like Totem, Media Player, VLC etc work fine. It's mostly
games that experience sound latency. World of Goo is an exception to the
rule however. I installed this game yesterday (I'm still running 8.10),
and I didn't have to kill pulseaudio to play the game without sound
latency.

[Bug 217164] [NEW] Pause screen pops up for no apparent reason

2008-04-14 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: blobwars

When I am playing Metal Blob Solid in full-screen mode, every now and then the
Pause screen will show up. Just to be sure: I'm talking about the screen in
which you can see the objects you're carrying and the progress you've made in
the current level so far.
Pressing the Pause key will resume play, and everything keeps functioning
normally, except for this bug. So it's as if the game decides to 'push' the
Pause button by itself from time to time :)

[Bug 566687] Re: [Lucid] Ubiquity doesn't confirm the selected partitioning and gives a wrong error message

2010-04-20 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
> They'll have selected "install side by side", pressed next, watched as
it made a new partition, filled out the user setup page, and pressed
next to bring them to a summary page that says no further changes to the
partition table are necessary.

If the partition changes have already taken place, and the user has seen
it happen, why bother showing the 'no further change' message in the
'Ready to Install' screen? It could better be left out then. I agree
with Pjotr that this could be confusing to less experienced and
confident users.

Apart from this I don't think it's right that those partition changes
already take place directly after the disk space allocation screen. IMHO
the user should be able to make up his mind about any setting he has
chosen until he presses 'Install' on the 'Ready to Install' screen.

[Bug 502568] Re: Improve the navigation bar in Nautilus

2010-01-06 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
I think he means the following:

Say you have a folder in your home directory called 'parent', which contains
the folders 'child1', 'child2' and 'child3', and you're in folder 'parent'. In
the navigation bar you'll see something like
> home > parent
Now in Vista/7, you can press a little arrow next to the 'parent' button in the
navigation bar, which will give you a popup menu listing the folders 'child1',
'child2' and 'child3'. In other words: you can directly navigate to a subfolder
via the navigation bar.
In Nautilus, you have to doubleclick on a folder in the main view to achieve
the same result.

2010-01-06 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
What I forgot to mention in my comment:

This popup feature especially comes in handy when the user wants to navigate to
a different subfolder in a parent folder.
Say the user is in a folder called 'parent4', and his navigation bar shows this:
> home > parent1 > parent2 > parent3 > parent4
If he wants to navigate to a folder in 'parent1', in Vista/7 he can simply
click the little arrow next to 'parent1' and select the desired folder from the
popup menu.

[Bug 701645] [NEW] Keyboard layout doesn't switch correctly in indicator-applet

2011-01-11 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

Ubuntu 10.10
Version of indicator-applet: 0.4.6-0ubuntu1

I set my Scroll Lock key to switch between keyboard layouts. When I do this,
the abbreviated name of the layout shows up correctly in indicator-applet, and
typing works as expected. However, in the pop-up menu of indicator-applet, the
previous layout remains selected.
As a consequence, when I choose 'Show Current Layout', it shows the wrong
keyboard layout.
Changing the layout via the pop-up menu works correctly.

So the problem is, that the right layout should be selected in
indicator-applet when the user switches the keyboard layout with a
certain key.

[Bug 294666] Re: PulseAudio causes sound latency in 8.10

2012-01-13 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
I've been trying to use the fix from comment #34 in 11.10 (Unity), this
far without success.

I copied firefox.desktop from /usr/share/applications to
~/.local/share/spplications and modified it there so that it executes
/usr/local/bin/firefox

For the rest I followed the steps from comment #34.

However, when I click the Firefox button in the Launcher (or whatever
that taskbar is called in Unity), nothing happens.

When I run the command 'firefox' in a terminal, I see why: I get the message
'permission denied'.
When I run 'sudo firefox' all seems to go well, but I'm not too comfortable
running the browser with administrator privileges.

What is the best way to apply this workaround in Unity?

IMHO the conversion to OGG should only be used as a work-around, since it makes
the music files unnecessarily large (doesn't it?).
I also think it would be a good idea to report this bug to the SDL developers

Then after that bug is fixed it's probably best to restore the IT files.

A point worth mentioning is that those IT files play fine in an external

2011-09-04 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Public bug reported:

In the previous Ubuntu versions, it was possible to choose a mouse
pointer to use with a theme. It also allowed you to set the mouse
pointer size.

I can no longer find this option in Ubuntu 11.10 (development branch).
Version of gnome-control-center: 1:3.1.90-0ubuntu2

[Bug 780687] [NEW] Mouse cursor 'off' when opening Launcher via Alt+F1

2011-05-10 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 x86.

When I open the Launcher with Alt+F1, the mouse cursor seems to be 'off' a bit.
I have to click somewhat above the icons to open programs.

[Bug 780688] [NEW] Enhanced Zoom Desktop doesn't zoom Launcher and top panel

2011-05-10 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 x86 with Unity.
I enabled the Enhanced Zoom Desktop plugin.
When I zoom in, the Launcher and the top panel remain the same size, which is
quite confusing.
I'd expect these 2 screen areas to zoom in along with the rest of my desktop.

[Bug 781100] [NEW] Unity overrides compose key setting

2011-05-11 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

In advanced keyboard settings, I configured Right Win as compose key.
This setting is overridden by Unity - it won't let me use Right Win as compose
key.

Work-around:
In advanced keyboard settings > Alt/Win key behavior select 'Meta is mapped to
left Win'

[Bug 668683] [NEW] Theme settings aren't correctly applied to KDE apps in GNOME

2010-10-30 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 x86. I have selected the Radiance theme.
When I run a KDE app (Kubrick for instance) the Radiance theme isn't correctly
applied. It is most noticeable when I look at tooltips; they should be white on
black, but instead the text colour is a very dark grey, making tooltips
unreadable. The toolbar also isn't the right colour.
When I open the Appearance Preferences dialog while the game is running, select
another theme and then switch back to Radiance, the theme colours are correctly
applied in the KDE app.

I ran that export command from a terminal before starting Firefox, but
it didn't seem to have any effect. I tried the game I mentioned in
message #25.

[Bug 294666] Re: PulseAudio causes sound latency in 8.10

2010-11-01 Thread Jordy van Heeswijk
Ahh ok, I thought that variable would be applied system-wide, so I started
Firefox from the top panel.
Running Firefox from the same terminal as the export command solves the sound
issue; thanks for the tip!

Two more questions:
1) Why the value 20?
2) Wouldn't this be a sensible setting to include in the default configuration
of Ubuntu?

[Bug 294666] Re: PulseAudio causes sound latency in 8.10

Is there some sort of configuration file I can add that export command
to, so Firefox always starts with that setting? Or should I just create
an executable script?
