[Bug 484788] Re: Xsane crashed with HP Scanjet 3570c

2010-03-02 Thread Jon Grossart
I have the same scanner-HP3750C. Scanning worked correctly under Jaunty
for me (and earlier), so I'm not sure about from the LiveCD
specifically. However, under Karmic, the scanner doesn't work at all.
When you go to scan, it will communicate with the scanner correctly and
start the scan, but it will crash once it gets the image data. People
have found that downgrading the libsane file to the jaunty version gets
scanning working again (which it did for me, but it makes updating the
system a pain because you have to always be aware of the clicking the
library update off or redoing the downgrade) since it's on a system I
admin for rather than directly control.

Here is the other related bug that has lots o information, but not
developer love:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xsane/+bug/428476

I had searched long ago and there some comment from a xsane that
something had changed in the backend between 1.0.19 and 1.0.20 that
changed one of the APIs and it the versions weren't sync'ed properly,
certain of models would break.

http://www.xsane.org/ - 2009-2-16 news item.

Basically, xsane and sane aren't playing nice anymore past libsane
1.0.19.

[Bug 487347] [NEW] Samsung NC10 touchpad generates hundres of interrupts per minutes

2009-11-23 Thread Jon Grossart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Ubuntu 9.10 fresh install (generally base configuration with no external
hardware connected)
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.1.2-1ubuntu7
Samsung NC10 11CA BIOS

When performing testing to reduce battery drain on my NC10 netbook, I've
been tracking the CPU wake-ups. I was using gnome-power-statistics to
track the CPU.

When the computer was idle, there would be around 40 wake-ups per
second. While using the trackpad, there would be ~475 interrupts for
the trackpad as well as ~150 additional interrupts per second generally
increased (totalling around ~667/second). I even had one instance (not
recorded unfortunately, where it was in the thousands). I compared this
against other laptops running fresh 9.10 installation as well as
desktops running it. Even using a USB mouse, they only generate tens or
less of interrupts per second, not hundreds.

Since other laptops don't show this problem but the NC10 does, I'm
guessing it's a cofiguration/setup issue.

I was looking at Bug #194489, and it seems to be perhaps related, but
somewhat different. If I'm not using the touchpad, it doesn't generate
spurious interrupts, but when I do use it, it seems to be way too high.

[Bug 560339] [NEW] default cursor selection not being used

2010-04-10 Thread Jon Grossart
Public bug reported:

Version: Ubuntu 10.04 Beta 2 (installed from Beta 1)

I installed the oxygen-cursor-theme, and in previous versions of Ubuntu,
it would be become the system wide default cursor. Under 10.04, this
does not happen. When I check under update-alternatives, however, it
still listed as the auto default. The cursor theme that is being used
id the DMZ White that is the normal Ubuntu default.

If I manually select Oxygen theme from the appearance menu, it will
work, but it is still not the system default.

Since it is the auto default, I would expect it do be used as the system
default as it was in 9.10 and before.

[Bug 1310304] Re: Xubuntu 14.04 installs lightdm conf file to outdated/incorrect location

2014-05-26 Thread Jon Grossart
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1311090 ***

This isn't directly a duplicate bug. The other bug is about when you
remove xubuntu-default-settings that it leaves the file behind. This bug
is about the fact that it puts the file in a non-consistent location.

Plus, how can an older bug be the duplicate of a newer bug?

[Bug 1310304] [NEW] Xubuntu 14.04 installs lightdm conf file to outdated/incorrect location

2014-04-20 Thread Jon Grossart
Public bug reported:

I was installing the various *-desktop packages for a friend to test out
what interface she'd like.

Of course, lightdm got overwritten (what I expected). However, in
looking up the conf files and finding out that they were restructured in
14.04, it seems Xubuntu didn't update it's location.

Unity and Kubuntu put their files in /usr/share/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d
while Xubuntu still puts it file in /etc/lighdm/lightdm.conf.d

I would assume that the file should be in the /usr/share tree with the
other files so they are all together.

[Bug 1415644] [NEW] Breeze Dark does not switch application menu/launcher to dark themes

2015-01-28 Thread Jon Grossart
Public bug reported:

I just did a fresh install of Kubuntu 15.04 A2 in Virtualbox.

When you switch the theme to "Breeze Dark", the text in both of the
application launcher options remains in white over light gray, which is
very hard to read, rather than what it should default to

If kwin isn't installed (not installed a default package -- a separate
bug), the window decorations didn't work but the menu color switching
did work. So, I'm not sure whether or not this is a kwin or Breeze bug.

[Bug 760131] Re: Power consumption raised significantly in natty

2011-06-30 Thread Jon Grossart
While, I agree that this a huge problem overall, I'm think I have to
agree with the idea that it's not a regression. If you read the
comments on Phoronix from the actual path author (which was only linked
on the little side bar of the page, not the main column), he makes the
statement a little more clear.

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=OTYwNA

The patch enables correct handling of the ASPM to the BIOS if it can
handle it, otherwise it lets the kernel do it. However, it then depends
on the hardware drivers to setup the correct values. That is the
problem that is happening with this bug according to the author. The
kernel is now handling the situation correctly, and it is revealing a
lot of long standing bugs in a lot/most of the drivers and BIOSes in
that they don't handle ASPM correctly, or coded to the fact that the
kernel was incorrectly managing it before. Quite frankly, it sounds a
lot like the whole IE6 problem plaguing web browsers.

Maybe this has something to do with the overall higher power consumption
in Ubuntu often seen. On netbook in WinXP I can it down to 5W idling.
In Ubuntu with same config, it won't go below 7-8W. The only thing I
can think that would make the different is the driver
settings/abilities.

So what is the correct fix? That, I don't know. BIOS and hardware
drivers are real culprits it seems. Chances of BIOS fixes are probably
slim for the vast majority of systems. And the drivers changes would
probably be numerous and slow going.

Regression/proper behavior or whatever it ends up being called, there is
a lot more fixing that needs to be done. What has surprised me about
the whole Linux community is that no one seems to be really all that
upset or even tracking the problem as a whole except Phoronix and the
users. It would seem with the prevalence of laptops that power
consumption would be a huge priority.

Although, there are tons more servers than laptop running Linux, so
maybe that is the issue here as well. Although, I would think power
consumption is an even bigger issue for them (cost wise, not running
down the battery/burn your lap wise).

[Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-05-20 Thread Jon Grossart
If people really want progress, the Ubuntu devs have nothing to do with
it at the moment. nvidia-96 is the proprietary driver from Nvidia.
Until Nvidia releases a xorg 1.10 compatible version (as they have for
2xx+ and 173 series, Ubuntu can't really do anything (that I know of)
except providing some sort of alternate older version of xorg, which
would probably create a huge number of problems.

So, contact Nvidia if you want progress. After they release the driver,
THEN it's up to the Ubuntu devs to get it packaged for Ubuntu.

All that being said...I wish Nvidia would hurry up with that driver, I
want 11.04 working for me as well!

[Bug 560339] Re: default cursor selection not being used

2010-10-25 Thread Jon Grossart
Yes, I just rechecked on a fairly fresh install of 10.10

Old Results:
1. "sudo apt-get install oxygen-cursor-theme"
2. {maybe reboot, I don't remember at this point}
3. oxygen-cursor-theme gets used as it is the auto default due to priority

10.04/10.10
1. "sudo apt-get install oxygen-cursor-theme"
2. reboot
3. still using DMZ-White
4. go to Appearance and customize theme to use Default Cursor
5. reboot
6. still using DMZ-White
7. run "sudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme"
8. oxygen-white will be selected as the auto default but reselect as "0"
9. then oxygen-white will work as the default

Now maybe it shouldn't automatically become the default, but perhaps
like installing gdm/kdm, when you install a new cursor theme (at least
from the repos), it should ask what you want to make the default.
