I had the same problem with a Dell laptop (vostro 1320). It occurs after the latest upgrades. With the life CD and before the upgdate there were no problems. After a new installation I started the actualisation and deselected 'hal, libhal1, libhal-storage1'. Now WLAN works fine. There must be a bug in the new files, version: 0.512c1+git20090403-0ubuntu3 'dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.Hal /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/dell_wlan_switch org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.KillSwitch.GetPower' returns '0' With the old version (0.512c1+git20090403-0ubuntu1) it returns 2 Hint: I use ubuntu since 6 weeks. I'm not a specialist. Seams to be a problem with karmic. I'm using audacity and I cannot record audio. With jaunty there was no problem. May be the reason is, to make the UI of the audio settings more simply. My audio harware: Nvidia MCP55 audio adapter. Hope that there will be a quick fix. Using gnome-disk-utility happens only on a stick which was formerly not used with dd and applications based on dd. In this case you must create a new partition table and a new partition with gparted. Any messages concerning sector size must be ignored. May be: Installing Xubuntu I used the home-partition of ubuntu. Before I deleted most of the files and directories meaning that they are relevant for the unity desktop. Now I will do it again and leave only those applications, which have nothing to do with the system. E.g. Public bug reported: Hi, if you select time synchronisation over the internet, NTP must be installed (offered in the dialog) . This results in a waiting loop (1 minute) after log in. I found a hint in the internet concerning NTP and NTPDATE. Therefore I deinstalled NTPDATE, AFAIK installed per default. After this the waiting loop is gone. Think that the package manager should do this automatically. After several restarts I thought that there must be another behavior which causes the loop. I don't payed attention, that I had changed the login to using password. In this case the loop exists. Without password I had no loop with and without NTPDATE for several restarts. But with the last restart I had a loop with login without password. I deinstalled NTPDATE and had no loop after restart. Strange behaviour. I give up as these things are to heavy for me.
