[Bug 147623] Re: [EM64T + nvidia 8xxx]When booting, screen stays black.

2008-01-28 Thread John R
My situation fits in with the second description Fabio Papa gives above:
"But 64 bits Ubuntu, which we are discussing here, has a completely different
matter. Still a black screen, but boot time is normal."

I am running AMD64 Gutsy (clean install) with an nvidia 8600GT. Booting
time is normal (very short, in fact), but I do not get a splash screen
after the kernel starts loading. The monitor simply goes into power
saving mode until the login screen shows. None of the 'solutions' I have
found on the web have solved the problem (e.g. loading the kernel with
vga=) etc. -- these seem to be solutions to an unrelated problem, as
Fabio suggests.

[Bug 147623] Re: [EM64T + nvidia 8xxx]When booting, screen stays black.

2008-01-28 Thread John R
I should mention one thing that may help someone solve this problem:

After implementing the suggestions on the web, for example setting
vga=795 in /boot/grub/menu.lst and updating the resolution in
usplash.conf (and doing the associated rebuild), I see one change: when
I shut down the computer, no longer do I see just a blank screen
immediately (even before the computer has switched off), but now I see a
screen with lots of random coloured 'noise' (lots of colours filling the
entire screen).

[Bug 343707] Re: Rhythmbox tries to find a codec for a m3u/html file

2010-04-27 Thread John R
Still in Lucid, but the workaround is to just remove the gnome-codec-
install package:

sudo apt-get remove --purge gnome-codec-install

Next time you start Rhythmbox - it shouldn't prompt you for any codecs.
You'll probably have all of the codecs you need by now anyway...

[Bug 1313539] Re: monitor shows black screen and "no input signal" after turning the monitor off and on manually

2015-01-14 Thread John R
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1308105 ***

This affects me too. I have a GTX 660 connected to a HP LP2475w monitor
with Ubuntu Desktop 14.04 over a DisplayPort cable. Switch the monitor
off and on again, and it says no signal. I have to reboot to get the
machine back. This makes DisplayPort unusable. The problem goes away
with a DVI cable. See my question here:

[Bug 1308105] Re: Xfce resets TV mode to NULL when power cycled

2015-01-21 Thread John R
Hey guys - a little help for a relative Ubuntu n00b?

I'm *not* running Mythbuntu - I'm running standard Ubuntu Desktop 14.04.
I don't have xfce4-settings installed, but I am seeing very similar
behaviour to that described in this bug report. I have a DisplayPort
monitor attached. If I switch it off and switch it on again (or switch
it to a different input and back again), Ubuntu doesn't detect the
monitor and it says black. I have to reboot the box to get the display
back. (There may be a way of getting it back using ssh but I haven't
been able to do that yet).

If I change the monitor cable from DisplayPort to DVI this does not
happen. I'm using a GTX660 with an HP LP2475w.

My behaviour looks like the same bug, but changing xfce4-settings won't
help as I don't have it installed!

Can anyone verify this behaviour, and if verified, add the appropriate
data in the "Affects" field? Thanks.

[Bug 595265] Re: Can not add Facebook account as add button not displayed after authorisation.

2010-09-10 Thread John R
Hi Guys,

Just to let you know I tried a myriad of workarounds mentioned above -
but this FINALLY got it working.

1. Check that you're running Gwibber 2.30.2 (start gwibber, go into Help >
About)
2. Run "firefox ~/.local/share/desktop-couch/couchdb.html" (no quotes). This
will take you to Gwibber's settings.
3. Click on gwibber_accounts
4. Click on each key, and check that the protocol is not "facebook". If it is,
click the 'Delete document...' link and remove it.
5. Repeat Step 4 unitl there are definitely no facebook keys.
6. Close Gwibber
7. Logon to Facebook and remove Gwibber from your apps list (comment #106 above)
8. Open Gwibber and try to add your account. Tick the box to always allow
gwibber to log you in and allow the Gwibber app access to your account.
9. Pray that the Add and Cancel buttons appear (very important at this point)
10. If it does, click add and do a merry jig.

Good luck! Just to add, that this was incredibly painful to work out -
so thanks to everyone above. Hopefully this will settle the
authentication down... :|

[Bug 1166529] Re: Creative Recon3d & Sound Blaster Z (CA0132), No Sound At All; Broken Beyond All Repair

2014-02-07 Thread John R. Boutiette
I also have the Recon3D card with CA0132. I'm running linux mint 16
from a clean install. Sound will work on every other boot with the
"sound fix=1" added. This also applies to windows 7. I use the program
Pithos( a web client based player) for Pandora to record audio off the
player through a program called Audio Recorder. I set the recorder to
record audio from stereo out. I set the recorder to start recording
when it sensed audio from Stereo out. It did record audio even when the
nothing was being outputed from the speakers. I rebooted the system and
checked the file it had recorded and it played perfectly like the
speakers were working. I also noticed in mt Dmesg file in /var/log that
sometimes it said that ca0132 didn't load or never even said anything
about this card. Next boot "Dsp CA0132 loaded". Hope this helps in some
way.

Public bug reported:

all the latest updates. This morning I tried, and failed to install the
latest update. The update came back with a error saying that all the
changes didn't not succeed. I took a screenshot of the exact error that
was reported, but I don't know how to post it here. I tried to copy the
error to paste it here, and wasn't able to. I received a error when I
tried to highlight, and use ctrl-c to copy it. The error was that I may
leave the package in a broken state. Do you really want to continue so I

I don't think so. It was so long ago (April, I think.)

[Bug 228886] [NEW] File for 7.04 to 7.10 upgrade not in gunzip format; installer can't recover

2008-05-09 Thread John R. Woodward, MSW
Public bug reported:

I encountered a bug trying to upgrade from Ubuntu 7.04 (the version on the DVD
that is included in the book ) to 7.10. I started with a clean, fresh patched
version of 7.04
instaqlled on a ASUS laptop with 3Gb of memory. The entire drive partition was
reserved for Ubuntu. I wanted to upgrade to 8.04, but the Update Manager only
offered the 7.10 upgrade. I planned to go on to 8.04 from 7.10. The install
failed three times when I launched it from the Update Manager, so I tried again
from the terminal.

The entire session is pasted into the bottom of this email, but I believe this
is the relevant section:

Error during update
A problem occured during the update.
This is usually some sort of network problem, please
check your network connection and retry.
Failed to fetch

http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy-security/universe/binary-i386/
Packages.gz
Sub-process gzip returned an error code (1)

If I understand the message, the file

security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/gutsy-
security/universe/binary-i386/Packages.gz

is not in gunzip format, causing a failure the installer can't fix. The error
message
regarding a posible network problem is misleading; I did not have any
connectivity problems. (I can see that server with my Firefox browser.)

Is there a workaround for this problem, such as another site I can use instead
of security.ubuntu.com?

Thank you for your assistance.
