I was able to download the package without any trouble. Did you receive
any kind of error message? Could you please clarify...did the download
simply hang (the download sat at 5% and wouldn't go any further), or did
the download completely close (either it got removed from the Software
Centre queue or the Synaptic install window closed without the package
being installed)?

Re: [Bug 511632] Re: cannot download gstreamer0.10plugins bad

2010-01-23 Thread John Pendlebury
Hi ,

Yes I can install other packages from the Software Center and
via Synaptic .Sometimes the download is quite slow , but most
of the time there is no problem at all .

I should have said earlier that I am using Ubuntu 9.10 , with a
mobile broadband connection .

I am also an absolute beginner with Ubuntu , having just switched
from Windows a few days ago . I was sick-and-tired of the security
issues with Windows . So I am trying to install all the programs
that I generally use .

Thank you for responding, it will help our team to determine how to
approach your bug. Unfortunately, I am unsure whether the issue is being
caused by the server that the Software Center and Synaptic are trying to
download from, or if it is a problem with the Software Center program
itself. Could you please confirm for me whether the Software Center is
able to successfully install other packages?

Subject: [Bug 511632] Re: cannot download gstreamer0.10plugins bad

Thanks for responding so quickly. I would just like to take a moment to
say "Welcome to the Ubuntu community!"

As for your bug, I think we are looking at a problem with the mirror
server that your computer is attempting to download from. Could you
please go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources. Once the
window opens up, you should find the "Ubuntu Software" tab selected. One
of the options is a drop-down menu next to "Download from:" If you click
on that drop-down menu, you will find the option of "Other..." Could you
please select "Other..." and choose a different server that is located
relatively close to your location? Afterwards, you can close that
window. You should then open a terminal and run 'sudo apt-get update'
(without the quotation marks) so your computer will get the information
it needs from those servers. After that, could you try once more to
download the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad package? Hopefully the download
will be successful. If it is, then you can either choose to return the
Software Sources settings to their default, or you can leave them
changed, it doesn't matter. If it does not work, then please try one or
two more servers, just in case you happened to choose the server your
computer was already trying to download from.

After you have tried the above solution, please leave a comment letting
us know whether or not it worked so we know if we can close this report
or if we must investigate it further.

Thank you and good luck!

Thank you for trying the possible solution, and sorry it did not work.
Unfortunately, we currently do not have enough information to officially
confirm your bug since there do not seem to be any other reports of
others experiencing the same issue. If you could please clarify a few
more questions for me, we will hopefully be able to find a solution for
you, or at the very least get this report filed to the right developers.

1. Did you run the 'sudo apt-get update' command each time you switched
servers?

2. After switching servers, did you try installing the package in the
Software Center as well as Synaptic?

3. Have you tried installing from the terminal? ('sudo apt-get install
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad')

4. I am not able to find a "gstreamer0.10 plugins bad" in the Software
Center. Could you please type the exact title of the package you are
attempting to install using the Software Center?

I'm sorry that you have encountered a problem such as this so early in
your transition to Ubuntu, but we appreciate your willingness to respond
and help resolve the issue.

Thank you for answering our questions. While we figure out how to file
this report, I would just like to let you know of a possible solution to
your current problem. If you go to
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/i386/gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-
multiverse/download you should be able to choose a link and download the
plugins as a .deb file. These files are similar to .exe in Windows; just
download it, double click it, and it should install just fine. I was
able to download the package onto my machine without a problem, so
hopefully this will allow you to get the plugins while we work on this
bug. Thanks for being so patient and working with us.

Subject: [Bug 511632] Re: Cannot download gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

@Draycen,

gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad* package do not depend on ubuntu-restricted-
extras in any way. ubuntu-restricted-extras is a meta package which
pulls lot of gstreamer plugin packages as well as Sun JRE package.

@John,
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad has a midi plugin which needs freepats package to
work properly. So when you try to install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad the
freepats package is alo installed. The freepats package is huge in size (29
MB). This might be the reason the download appeared to be stuck at 5%. You can
bypass the installation of freepats package when installing gstreamer package
in following way.
In Synaptic go to Preferences -> General -> Marking Changes. There is a
checkbox 'Consider recommended packages as dependencies'. Disable this checkbox
and then try to install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad package.

** Package changed: gst-plugins-bad-multiverse0.10 (Ubuntu) => gst-
plugins-bad0.10 (Ubuntu)

John, we may have figured out what is causing the issue. Could you
please see if the "ubuntu-restricted-extras" package is installed on

the "gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad" package. The GStreamer plugins are not

contains some GStreamer plugins by default. After that package is

this will work so you won't have to use the .deb file I mentioned in the

John, I'm sorry this is taking so long to resolve. I have a few more
questions for you so we can hopefully figure out the exact cause of the
problem.

1. Are you using a high-speed internet connection?

2. Are you using any kind of proxy for your internet?

3. Have you recently run the Update Manager or 'sudo apt-get update;
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' so your software is up-to-date? (If not, then
please do this first)

4. What servers did you try to download from before?

I also have another possible solution you can try:

If you go into the Software Center, then Edit -> Software Sources...,
you should get the same menu I had you pull up before. Could you select
"Other..." under "Download from:," but this time run "Select Best
Server" if you didn't before? This will cause your computer to try every
server and select the one with the best speeds (it might take a while if
your internet is slow). Then, you can try downloading the package again.
If that still doesn't work, then could you please try the
"astromirror.uchicago.edu" server under "United States"? Depending on
your location, this may cause slow downloads, but I have tried this
server personally and it has worked for me.

I know this is similar to what I had you try before, but the problem
seems to be with your network connection as opposed to a software issue
with either Software Center, Synaptic, or even the gstreamer0.10
-plugins-bad package. By trying this possible solution and answering my
questions, we will have a better idea of whether or not the problem is
with the servers or with your computer (or still potentially something
else).

Again, I apologize for all of this inconvenience. I will continue to
consult with other members of the BugSquad team so we can hopefully find
a solution for you soon, or at the very least get your bug heard.

Thanks

Status in “gst-plugins-bad0.10” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete

Bug description:
Binary package hint: gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad

When trying to download the gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad package
("GStreamerplugins for mms, wavpack, quicktime, musepack" in the
Software Center), the package is unable to be downloaded. This problem
occurs in the Software Center, Synaptic, and when attempting to install
through the terminal. Each time, the program sits for a long time
attempting to download the package, but eventually times out.

Switching mirror servers in Software Sources (and running 'sudo apt-get
update' afterwards) has not solved the problem. The Software Center and
Synaptic have had no trouble downloading and installing any other
packages.
