[Bug 235635] Re: Graphical package managers slow system to halt
I have resolved this issue on my own machine and I think I have determined the cause. It seems to be related to the "sudo: unable to resolve host" issue. During the span of time that package managers were running slowly, I was receiving that message from sudo. After resolving that sudo issue, I noticed that not only package managers, but all other gksu applications which had been running slowly (like my backup application) had stopped locking up my machine and started working at a good speed once again. If you are interested, I discuss my findings in more detail in a different bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/235637/comments/2 ** Changed in: sudo (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: None => sudo -- Graphical package managers slow system to halt https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/235635 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 223954] Re: Brightness control still has major bugs
There is another bug which doesn't seem to have been mentioned. Using the [Fn + Up] and [Fn + Dn] keystrokes changes the brightness in huge increments. The keystrokes basically allow me three separate brightness levels: very dim, medium, and very bright. By comparison, my Dell's sound buttons allow me to adjust the sound in very small increments, allowing me to access about 10 different volume levels. I wouldn't mark this bug as low priority, as I would be hesitant to argue that these problems are of low annoyance to any user. [Bug 223954] Re: Brightness control still has major bugs
To quote https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance - Low: Bugs which affect functionality, but to a lesser extent than most bugs, examples are: * Ones that can be easily worked around * Ones that affect unusual configurations or uncommon hardware * A bug that has a moderate impact on a non-core application * A cosmetic/usability issue that does not limit the functionality of an application - I guess you could make the argument that this is a cosmetic issue, but that seems like a bit of a stretch. I mean, it's not like this is a bug in Compiz or anything like that. And the bugs certainly do not meet any of the other criteria to be considered Low priority. There is no known workaround to these bugs, let alone an easy workaround, this bug is not related to "unusual configurations" or "uncommon hardware", and this bug is related to core functionality. I would recommend that the priority of these bugs be changed to Medium as they have "a moderate impact on a core application". -- Brightness control still has major bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223954 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 235637] Re: Applications that require gksu privileges (Synaptic, Update Manager, etc) do not launch
I was able to find the cause of the bug, and would appreciate if someone can confirm this by following the steps below: Steps to reproduce: 1. Launch System > Administration > Network 2. Unlock the application if necessary 3. Click the "General" tab and add a domain (I tried to add the name of my home network, but any name would cause the same problem) 4. Hit close Expected result: sudo and gksu do not behave any differently Actual results: -gksu applications (such as Synaptic or GParted) either do not launch or must be started twice before they actually launch -Using sudo from terminal works, but produces the error message "sudo: unable to resolve host [computer name]" It's worth noting that after you add a domain name in the "General" tab of "Network Settings", that same domain name is appended to the alias of host 127.0.1.1 in the "Hosts" tab of "Network Settings". Also interesting is that I recently submitted a different bug to report that graphical package managers had been running incredibly slowly on my machine (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/235635). After fixing this network bug I have noticed that package managers no longer bring my machine to a halt. In fact, all other gksu applications (such as my backup application) which had been locking up my computer no longer do so. It appears that the dramatic slowdown I noticed in Synaptic and GDebi was not due to the fact that they were package managers, but due to the fact that they required gksu privileges. I would appreciate if anyone could confirm any of what I have discussed in this post. I would also appreciate if anyone could elaborate on the cause of my issues. I have provided and elaborated on the symptoms, but am not knowledgeable enough to determine the exact cause of this bug. -- Applications that require gksu privileges (Synaptic, Update Manager, etc) do not launch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/235637 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 238730] [NEW] Cannot easily apply a tag to multiple webpages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: firefox-3.0 It is not possible to tag multiple webpages at the same time. Steps to repeat: 1. Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks... 2. In the left panel, double-click your "Bookmarks Menu" folder or any other folder 3. In the right panel, select multiple bookmarks (click first, shift-click last) Expected Result: The "Name" and "Location" fields of the bottom-right panel become disabled, but the "Tags" field is still usable Actual Result: The entire bottom-right panel (Name, Location, and Tags) disappears, making it impossible to apply a tag to all of the selected bookmarks. A little nitpicky, I know. But I, like most users of pre-3.0 versions, have organized my bookmarks in a folder structure. Now that Firefox has such a great tagging system, I would love to tag all of my bookmarks and (at least partially) do away with my folder structure. [Bug 223954] [NEW] Brightness control still has major bugs
Public bug reported: gnome-power-manager and the brightness applet had some very annoying bugs in Gutsy (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome- power-manager/+bug/137598). For a while after upgrading to Hardy, it seemed as through the aforementioned bug had been resolved. I was able to adjust the screen brightness with [Fn + Up] and [Fn + Down] without issue. But now that I have been using Hardy for a few days, it seems that some of the bugs remain. Whenever I close/reopen my laptop lid, the brightness level changes. I have specified (through brightness applet) that the brightness should be at about 80%. But if after closing/reopening the laptop lid, the brightness level changes to about 20% and I must use either the Fn keys or Brightness Applet to revert the brightness to 80%. I have not done any extensive testing, and thus cannot provide with certainty a "Steps to reproduce" section. But it is clear that something is wrong, as the brightness level should not modify itself when I close my laptop lid. If anyone can confirm similar buggy activity or would like to provide any other relevant information, please do so in the comments section. ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Brightness control still has major bugs https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/223954 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 137598] Re: Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in
Hardy fixed some of these issues, but introduced more at the same time. I haven't done extensive testing, but I can provide you with my observations. In Gutsy, I had the following problem. If I set the brightness with the [Fn + Up] or [Fn + Down] keystroke, the brightness would at some point revert to the value set in the Brightness Applet. In Hardy, it seems that the opposite happens. If I set the brightness with the Brightness Applet, it will at some point revert to the value set by the [Fn + Up] or [Fn + Down] keystroke. Worse, the brightness level always reverts to some (seemingly random) value after a reboot. I opened up a new bug to discuss the new problems (feel free to mark it a duplicate if you think that would be appropriate): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/223954 ** Changed in: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Status: Fix Released => Incomplete -- Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/137598 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 174277] Re: Launchers under "System > Preferences" and "System > Administration" have similar names, leads to confusion.
I think that it would be best to remove "Software Sources" because that application can be easily reached from Synaptic. Most of the people who use "Software Sources" probably already use Synaptic, so it is a bit redundant. But if "Software Sources" has to stay, I would agree that a submenu would be the way to go. After all, there is an "Accessibility" submenu even though there are only two launchers of that type.
