[Bug 235635] Re: Graphical package managers slow system to halt

2008-06-02 Thread John Karahalis
I have resolved this issue on my own machine and I think I have
determined the cause. It seems to be related to the "sudo: unable to
resolve host" issue. During the span of time that package managers were
running slowly, I was receiving that message from sudo. After resolving
that sudo issue, I noticed that not only package managers, but all other
gksu applications which had been running slowly (like my backup
application) had stopped locking up my machine and started working at a
good speed once again.

If you are interested, I discuss my findings in more detail in a different bug
report:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/235637/comments/2

[Bug 223954] Re: Brightness control still has major bugs

2008-10-02 Thread John Karahalis
There is another bug which doesn't seem to have been mentioned.

Using the [Fn + Up] and [Fn + Dn] keystrokes changes the brightness in
huge increments. The keystrokes basically allow me three separate
brightness levels: very dim, medium, and very bright. By comparison, my
Dell's sound buttons allow me to adjust the sound in very small
increments, allowing me to access about 10 different volume levels.

I wouldn't mark this bug as low priority, as I would be hesitant to
argue that these problems are of low annoyance to any user. Can we get
some of these issues fixed for Intrepid?

[Bug 223954] Re: Brightness control still has major bugs

2008-10-02 Thread John Karahalis
To quote https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance

-
Low: Bugs which affect functionality, but to a lesser extent than most bugs,
examples are:
* Ones that can be easily worked around
* Ones that affect unusual configurations or uncommon hardware
* A bug that has a moderate impact on a non-core application
* A cosmetic/usability issue that does not limit the functionality of an
application
-

I guess you could make the argument that this is a cosmetic issue, but
that seems like a bit of a stretch. I mean, it's not like this is a bug
in Compiz or anything like that.

And the bugs certainly do not meet any of the other criteria to be
considered Low priority. There is no known workaround to these bugs, let
alone an easy workaround, this bug is not related to "unusual
configurations" or "uncommon hardware", and this bug is related to core
functionality.

I would recommend that the priority of these bugs be changed to Medium
as they have "a moderate impact on a core application".

[Bug 223954] Re: Brightness control still has major bugs

2008-06-19 Thread John Karahalis
As bgcommon notes, the bug is easily triggered. Set your brightness to a
certain level with the Brightness Applet. Alter the brightness with the
[Fn + Up] or [Fn + Down] key. Close/reopen the laptop lid and the level
will revert to that which had originally been set in the Brightness
Applet.

As you requested, here are the results of the commands. The commands
were executed after setting the brightness with the Brightness Applet
but before using the [Fn + *] key:

gconftool -a /apps/gnome-power-manager/backlight

 idle_dim_battery = true
 idle_brightness = 30
 dpms_method_battery = default
 dpms_method_ac = default
 idle_dim_time = 30
 brightness_battery = 70
 enable = true
 idle_dim_ac = false
 brightness_ac = 81
 battery_reduce = true

[Bug 235637] [NEW] Applications that require sudo privelages (Synaptic, Update Manager, etc) do not launch

2008-05-28 Thread John Karahalis
Public bug reported:

After attempting to launch any gksu application (Synaptic, Update
Manager, GParted, etc), no password prompt appears. Instead, an item
titled "Starting Administrative..." appears on the taskbar and
ultimately disappears. Sometimes, launching the applications a second
time works as expected. On other occasions, further attempts to launch
the application only result in the same problem - no password prompt but
a quiet failure of the application.

Launching any of these applications in terminal - ex: sudo synaptic -
seems to work perfectly well.

[Bug 235635] [NEW] Graphical package managers slow system to halt

2008-05-28 Thread John Karahalis
Public bug reported:

Whenever I attempt to install or remove software from Synaptic, Update
Manager, or gdebi-gtk my system slows to a halt. Everything becomes so
slow that the system practically locks up and makes it impossible for me
to do anything else, even move the mouse normally. For some reason,

[Bug 235637] Re: Applications that require gksu privileges (Synaptic, Update Manager, etc) do not launch

2008-05-29 Thread John Karahalis
I was able to find the cause of the bug, and would appreciate if someone
can confirm this by following the steps below:

Steps to reproduce:
1. Launch System > Administration > Network
2. Unlock the application if necessary
3. Click the "General" tab and add a domain (I tried to add the name of my home
network, but any name would cause the same problem)
4. Hit close

Expected result:
sudo and gksu do not behave any differently

Actual results:
-gksu applications (such as Synaptic or GParted) either do not launch or must
be started twice before they actually launch
-Using sudo from terminal works, but produces the error message "sudo: unable
to resolve host [computer name]"

It's worth noting that after you add a domain name in the "General" tab
of "Network Settings", that same domain name is appended to the alias of
host 127.0.1.1 in the "Hosts" tab of "Network Settings".

Also interesting is that I recently submitted a different bug to report
that graphical package managers had been running incredibly slowly on my
machine (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/235635). After fixing
this network bug I have noticed that package managers no longer bring my
machine to a halt. In fact, all other gksu applications (such as my
backup application) which had been locking up my computer no longer do
so. It appears that the dramatic slowdown I noticed in Synaptic and
GDebi was not due to the fact that they were package managers, but due
to the fact that they required gksu privileges.

I would appreciate if anyone could confirm any of what I have discussed
in this post. I would also appreciate if anyone could elaborate on the
cause of my issues. I have provided and elaborated on the symptoms, but
am not knowledgeable enough to determine the exact cause of this bug.

[Bug 238730] [NEW] Cannot easily apply a tag to multiple webpages

2008-06-09 Thread John Karahalis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

It is not possible to tag multiple webpages at the same time.

Steps to repeat:
1. Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks...
2. In the left panel, double-click your "Bookmarks Menu" folder or any other
folder
3. In the right panel, select multiple bookmarks (click first, shift-click last)

Expected Result:
The "Name" and "Location" fields of the bottom-right panel become disabled, but
the "Tags" field is still usable

Actual Result:
The entire bottom-right panel (Name, Location, and Tags) disappears, making it
impossible to apply a tag to all of the selected bookmarks.

A little nitpicky, I know. But I, like most users of pre-3.0 versions,
have organized my bookmarks in a folder structure. Now that Firefox has
such a great tagging system, I would love to tag all of my bookmarks and
(at least partially) do away with my folder structure. Because only one
webpage can be tagged at a time, it would be far too time-consuming to
do so.

[Bug 239620] [NEW] Property dialog of top folders displays the title "null"

The same thing happens when the steps are repeated using the two other

[Bug 222844] [NEW] "New Folder..." creates a new sibling folder, not a new subfolder

2008-04-26 Thread John Karahalis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

This same behavior has existed in previous versions of Firefox, and has
always seemed unnatural to me.

Steps to repeat:
1. Do [Ctrl + B] to open up the bookmarks side pane
2. Expand "Bookmarks Menu"
3. Find an existing subfolder (let's call it FolderA) of "Bookmarks Menu"
4. Right click FolderA and then click "New Folder..."
5. Hit "Ok" on the dialog

Expected result (most natural behavior):
FolderA has a subfolder named "New Folder"

Actual result:
FolderA has a sibling folder (that is, a subfolder of "Bookmarks Menu") called
"New Folder"

This behavior seems unnatural, as most applications automatically create
subfolders in such a situation. In fact, even Thunderbird will
automatically create a subfolder if you repeat a similar process on a
mail folder.

[Bug 223954] [NEW] Brightness control still has major bugs

2008-04-28 Thread John Karahalis
Public bug reported:

gnome-power-manager and the brightness applet had some very annoying
bugs in Gutsy (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
power-manager/+bug/137598).

For a while after upgrading to Hardy, it seemed as through the
aforementioned bug had been resolved. I was able to adjust the screen
brightness with [Fn + Up] and [Fn + Down] without issue. But now that I
have been using Hardy for a few days, it seems that some of the bugs
remain. Whenever I close/reopen my laptop lid, the brightness level
changes. I have specified (through brightness applet) that the
brightness should be at about 80%. But if after closing/reopening the
laptop lid, the brightness level changes to about 20% and I must use
either the Fn keys or Brightness Applet to revert the brightness to 80%.

I have not done any extensive testing, and thus cannot provide with
certainty a "Steps to reproduce" section. But it is clear that something
is wrong, as the brightness level should not modify itself when I close
my laptop lid. If anyone can confirm similar buggy activity or would
like to provide any other relevant information, please do so in the
comments section.

[Bug 137598] Re: Screen brightness resets to default (maximum) on idle with AC plugged in

2008-05-08 Thread John Karahalis
Hardy fixed some of these issues, but introduced more at the same time.
I haven't done extensive testing, but I can provide you with my
observations.

In Gutsy, I had the following problem. If I set the brightness with the
[Fn + Up] or [Fn + Down] keystroke, the brightness would at some point
revert to the value set in the Brightness Applet. In Hardy, it seems
that the opposite happens. If I set the brightness with the Brightness
Applet, it will at some point revert to the value set by the [Fn + Up]
or [Fn + Down] keystroke. Worse, the brightness level always reverts to
some (seemingly random) value after a reboot.

I opened up a new bug to discuss the new problems (feel free to mark it a
duplicate if you think that would be appropriate):

[Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime

2007-12-22 Thread John Karahalis
@maor and Mathieu HAVEL

If you are interested in getting Dell to replace affected hard drives, you may
wish to promote this idea on Ideastorm:
http://www.ideastorm.com/article/show/75651/Replace_worn_hard_drives_of_Ubuntu_PCs

It requests that Dell replace not only hard drives that die from this
bug, but also hard drives that are greatly affected before a fix is
implemented. In my case, my hard drive accumulated more than 450,000
load cycles before I applied the fix, so I think it and other drives
like it deserves to be replaced.

2008-03-13 Thread John Karahalis
I think that it would be best to remove "Software Sources" because that
application can be easily reached from Synaptic. Most of the people who
use "Software Sources" probably already use Synaptic, so it is a bit
redundant.

But if "Software Sources" has to stay, I would agree that a submenu
would be the way to go. After all, there is an "Accessibility" submenu
even though there are only two launchers of that type. It seems that
having 3 or more similar items would certainly warrant a submenu.

[Bug 776836] Re: Pressing on the "Subscribe" button to download my purchased music didn't work.

2012-10-21 Thread John Karahalis
Still seeing this in 12.10. Unable to use the workaround in comment #13
as I get an IPCError whenever I try to use the Ubuntu One client.

[Bug 331369] Re: regression vs. notification-daemon: positioning when multiple screens are available

2012-06-10 Thread John Karahalis
Does not work as described (If any windows are open, a bubble should
appear...) for me. I am on 12.04 and have not applied the modification
mentioned in comment #104.

[Bug 776836] Re: Pressing on the "Subscribe" button to download my purchased music didn't work.

2012-05-28 Thread John Karahalis
Surprised that this bug has still not been resolved. It seems to be
impossible to download music from Ubuntu One as a result.

The workaround described in comment #9 doesn't work for me. Is there any
other workaround we could try?

[Bug 923876] Re: FR: Limit and clean-up kernel images and headers automatically in LTS

2013-05-10 Thread John Karahalis
On Quantal, this does not appear to solve the problem described in bug
#1131512. My boot partition still becomes full after some kernel
upgrades. If not handled before the next reboot, this can make the
system un-bootable.

[Bug 923876] Re: FR: Limit and clean-up kernel images and headers automatically in LTS

2013-06-20 Thread John Karahalis
Still have this issue on a fresh install of Raring. And as others say,
this is especially problematic for those of us with an encrypted setup,
as the /boot partition fills up very quickly, causing software upgrades
to fail. This problem can only be solved by manually removing old
kernels, and I suspect the average user will not think to do this.
