[Bug 305828] Re: Who changed the system sounds in 8.10 to .ogg format, when the system will only accept .wav?

2009-07-15 Thread John Hagerman
The problem involved having TWO sound cards, one on the motherboard and a PCI.
Although the PCI card was set as default, apparently system sounds were
designed to default to the motherboard card if available. the conflict between
the cards was, apparently, shutting down both.
I discovered the solution to the problem in the answer to another question,
where it was suggested blacklisting the motherboard card was the only way to
shut it down completely. I did that, with immediate favourable results!
I apologise for not posting the solution. I realize it could be of help to
others!

[Bug 67905] Thunderbird New Card panel has no Cancel or OK buttons

2006-10-23 Thread John Hagerman
Public bug reported:

In Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 installed in Ubuntu 6.06 the New Card panel brought up
by the New Card buttons has no Cancel or OK buttons at the bottom, making it
impossible to make any additions to any Thunderbird Address Book.
Existing Cards DO have Cancel and OK buttons, but those cards are the result of
an import via floppy from an earlier version of Thunderbird running in Windows
XP.
Is this a bug, either in Thunderbird or Ubuntu, or a bug only in Ubuntu's
version of Thunderbird? Or something else?

New info:
I have discovered a thin red horizontal line in the New Card panel, just above
the GUI bottom panel. If I'm very careful with the cursor, this red line
appears and functions as the OK button. Not fun, but gets me out of the bind!
I'd still like to see that OK button.

2006-11-03 Thread John Hagerman
Apology happily accepted!
Here are three screenshots. The first one is what I get when I open New Card,
Screenshot-1 is what happens if I try to resize, and Screenshot 2 is from the
"Guest" account on the same system, which it had not occured to me to try
before.
I wish I could show you the 'thin red line', but I haven't yet puzzled my way
through the 'Help' on doing a screenshot from the keyboard!

Ah, too easy.
My Thunderbird is set for automatic upgrade, and is currently 1.5.0.12,
the latest.
Still no buttons. I begin to suspect the problem is in my installation

[Bug 193064] Re: gamix 1.99.p14 debian in 7.10, two soundcards, via8237 &audigy2 zs, too tall for window

2008-03-07 Thread John Hagerman
Further info:
When first installed, gamix window is properly sized and arranged horizontally.
If changed to vertical with C-type the window becomes too tall and is
unrecoverable with any setting in C-type.
Proper size, in horizontal, can be restored by uninstalling, restarting, and
reinstalling.
Don't touch that C-type button! (what does "C-type" mean, anyhow?)

I realized as soon as I found it that the "thin red line" was the top of
the button (I'm only marginally stupid) but when I tried to resize the
panel from the bottom the "thin red line" disappeared along with the
bottom of the panel. If I tried to resize from the top, the bottom of
the panel simply slid out of sight. Resizing from the side simply means
the right side of the panel begins to disappear.
I'm glad your panel works. Mine doesn't, despite uninstalling and
reinstalling Thunderbird.
I can live with the "thin red line" if I must, but I still would like to
see those buttons!

If you mean the card is too long for the space available, you're right.
If I try to shorten the card from the top, it simply slides further out of
sight at the bottom. If I try to shorten it from the bottom, the lower parts of
the card simply disappear altogether, and I could move it up until the whole
card is gone.

[Bug 491275] [NEW] efax- Warning: /dev/ttyS0 locked or busy - waiting

2009-12-02 Thread John Hagerman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

ubuntu 9.10amd64 using kernel 2.6.31-14 on x86/x86_64 has something loading at
boot which takes over ttyS0 and normally refuses to release it for use by efax.
In 9.04, efax worked perfectly with a USR5610 modem with a driver converted
from Red Hat by debian. This problem arrived with the 9.10 upgrade.
Note there have been three occasions in the past month when ttyS0 HAS been
released and, in those rare instances, efax has worked perfectly.
Unfortunately, on each occasion reboot has returned the "locked or busy"
situation.
If I could find the guilty package I could perhaps modify or remove it, but I
have had no luck in the hunt.

When I get the old box back up I'll have a look.

I'm sorry, I don't use KdeprintFax, so I can't directly address your
problem.
However, I wonder how you removed ModemManager. If you used Synaptic to
be sure to also remove all the ModemManager configuration files, it
should work.

[Bug 494447] [NEW] ModemManager seizes ttyS0, preventing use by other apps

2009-12-09 Thread John Hagerman
Public bug reported:

ModemManager prevents, in my case, the use of ttyS0 by efax. When efax
attempts to connect to my POTS line with my USR5610 modem via ttyS0, it
gets "Warning - ttyS0 locked or busy - waiting"

Another user alerted me to the workaround, which is to remove
ModemManager with Synaptic. Removal plus restart puts efax back in
business. Of course, that puts ModemManager out of business in whatever
it is supposed to do!

I presume there may be programs other than efax also affected by the
same problem. I'd report it as a bug in ModemManager if I could get the
Ubuntu Bug System to work, but it seems to be its own bug!

[Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly

2011-09-21 Thread John Hagerman
A little something in addition to what has appeared here...
Recently,Indicator-weather now does not always load when I start the computer
and must be started individually, despite the fact it is listed in Startup
Applications.
Also, although Apport is installed and running, indicator-weather occasionally
closes without reporting it has done so. In that case it usually requires
restarting twice. The first restart seems to stay up for only seconds.
Sorry about that, but I tend to rely on indicator-weather(or did) because here
our weather changes quite a bit from day to day.

[Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly

2011-10-22 Thread John Hagerman
This report is now moot.
My computer now has 2 systems - Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 11.10, on different
drives.
Indicator-weather still disappears regularly from 11.04, but is steady in 11.10.
We'll probably never know what small quirk in my version of 11.04 caused the
problem, but 11.04 will be my backup until 12.04 is available. I'll then be
updating it through 11.10 to 12.04, so I can check it in those systems to see
if the disappearance problem persists. I'm still curious!
Thank you for sticking with me during this investigation - it's been an
educational experience!

Hey - no apologies necessary - we're all busy.
I still have the affected system and will have for at least the next 6
months, so I'm willing to do whatever I can to solve the problem. I had
been thinking I would re-install the affected system to see if that
solved the problem (I didn't do that when it was my daily working setup)
but now I've switched over to 11.10 on the other drive, so we can keep
the problem system and do as we please!

I saw no report for bug 822931, only 3 bugs, 2 of which are very old, and this
one.
By the way, Indicator-weather is still sometimes reporting crashes, so I took a
look at the details of the report. It says "Core Dump (binary)"
Would a new report help?

[Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly

2012-01-03 Thread John Hagerman
As promised, both my main rig and netbook were up continuously from Dec
25 through Jan 1. The main rig (wired) and the netbook (while wired)
both had 'indicator-weather' crashs the morning of the 26th. (crash
reports coming). Since the 26th the main rig (amd 64) has had numerous
'indicator-weather' disappearances, while the netbook (i386) has had
none, either wired or wireless. Finally caught one of the main rig
disappearances on Jan 1 (crash report also coming, for whatever it's
worth).

I have noted other problems in the 64-bit setup which do not occur in
the 32-bit setup, (unexplained freezes, unresponsive icons) so I can
only conclude it isn't really an 'indicator-weather' problem, but a
system quirk. Then again, what does a noob like me know?

I'm glad I haven't recommended Ubuntu amd64 to any of my friends!

Hey, Doug, welcome to this mess. I had long ago decided I was all alone with
this nuisance!
If you check for other bugs in indicator-weather you'll find it has had and
still has a lot of problems. It seems also we no longer have Eliah Kagan to
help, so I don't know where else to go.
Perhaps indicator-weather will be rebuilt or replaced. next upgrade.

[Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly

2011-12-25 Thread John Hagerman
Thank you, Doug. As you see, I have returned this file to "private",
which it was originally until I was asked to make it public.

I have been hoping since Natty somehow the developers would hit on the
solution, but every update is a disappointment. I do note, however,
indicator-weather never disappears from 11.10 in my netbook, which is
32-bit. That may only mean I don't usually have the netbook up all day,
but it's something I have wondered about. Netbook now up for the next
few days!

Merry Christmas (if you'll take that wish from an admirer of the late
Christopher Hitchens) and all the best for the New Year!

John

[Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly

2011-08-07 Thread John Hagerman
My apologies for being so far behind in answering queries. In my own defence, I
sometimes work nights and don't get up until noon my time, so we may be working
at cross purposes.
First - I have not seen any of the windows shown in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Apport. In fact, I have no idea how to open Apport in
Unity without using a running program and at the moment indicator-weather has
shut down.
Secondly, there is absolutely nothing in /var/crash.
Third, I am unsure what, if anything, I should do in this circumstance, to get
you the information you desire.
Where do I go from here?

Aha!
Apport was NOT enabled. "killall -SEGV nano" gave me the dialogue window
I was originally expecting and didn't get. It has been so long since I
dealt with a suspected bug I didn't realize the bug notification system
was no longer part of the original install.
Now to wait for the next shut-down of indicator-weather!

OK. for my own information I left indicator-weather and Apport both

A duplicate report has been submitted after "indicator-weather" closed
unexpectedly. The reporting of this bug only vaguely resembled the
instructions in Ubuntu Help. It seems the help page is out of date -
clicking "Report" in the original "Report a Problem" window took me
directly to Launchpad and an almost entirely different list of
questions.

[Bug 821832] Re: indicator-weather disappears from panel randomly

2013-06-01 Thread John Hagerman
June 1, 2013, Ubuntu 13.04.
I have set up apport to notify every time Weather Indicator crashes - and it
still does, sometimes more than once a day.
With Doug's workaround, it re-starts immediately, so the only problem now is
the nuisance of having to check the crash report to verify it's Weather
Indicator again.
Maybe, someday, Weather Indicator will be re-built and work as intended!

Right click on the file, click on "open with other application" and
choose the application you want to use. Check mark "Remember this

I spoke too soon. After a week of solidarity, indicator-weather has
