It's been two years. Do you honestly think it still matters?

FWIW, I've given up on reporting bugs here, the response time just
doesn't encourage me.

[Bug 5106] Re: jabberd2 s2s crashes shortly after startup

2006-09-08 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
I'm using jabberd2 2.0s8-0ubuntu5 on edgy/amd64, and s2s does vanish
suddenly. However, I can't confirm a crash - about 5 minutes after
startup, the process logs that it's shutting down and is gone. I assume
the process is terminating gracefully after that log message.

[Bug 59658] Segfault after reading .bincimap-subscribed file

2006-09-09 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Public bug reported:

I've been trying out qmail/bincimap on edgy/amd64, using dqd 0.23 to
make my life somewhat easier (http://dqd.sourceforge.net/). After some
tweaking everything except for binc runs just fine.

Binc segfaults after trying to read the ".bincimap-subscribed" file. The
segfault occurs in session.cc, in method "Session::loadSubscribes", at
the end of the first if-block in the destructor of the std::string
"current". That seems rather dodgy to me...

As I wrote well over a year ago, after rebuilding the package from

[Bug 1744737] [NEW] Kernel probably sends bad ACPI events

2018-01-22 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Public bug reported:

For a few weeks now (unfortunately, I don't know the kernel version in
which that changed) my laptop suspends randomly.

Googling leads me to suspect that ACPI lid events are sent under the
wrong conditions, as journalctl does not record any key presses that
might trigger the suspend:

$ journalctl -f -b -u systemd-logind

Jan 22 15:27:09 systemd-logind[1279]: Lid opened.
Jan 22 15:27:21 systemd-logind[1279]: Operation 'sleep' finished.

FWIW, I *do* get this in the morning when I opened up my laptop:
Jan 19 07:53:56 kernel: ACPI: Lid Switch [LID]

But that's not happening at any time during the above systemd log lines.
That's got me to consider that maybe it is a systemd/logind issue after
all.

What can I send you to help with the investigation?

Thanks,
Jens

[Bug 1716378] [NEW] No sensible diagnostics for expired certificates

2017-09-11 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Public bug reported:

I had a running OpenVPN setup that one day "suddenly" failed to connect.
It took a while to figure out that the certificates I've been using had

Expected:

Actual:

- Generic OpenVPN log file contents.

It might be nice to check certificate validity before handing

far more user friendly thing to do would be to show a specific error
bubble stating that's the case.

[Bug 883000] Re: unity has no way to indicate which dialog is claiming for attention

2012-04-20 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Your argument is that if the world doesn't conform to your vision, the
world must change?

The per-window notification does not come from the blue corner, but from the
fact that
a) skype changes window icons based on it's internal window status, and
b) the unity window switcher displayed those icons.

That's the second point in my initial report. This doesn't exist any
longer, and therefore it's impossible to decide which window changed its
status. The fact that this is skype, a messaging app, is entirely
incidental.

[Bug 883000] Re: unity has no way to indicate which dialog is claiming for attention

2012-04-20 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Well, let's get back to the initial problem, then.

Some applications (by example of Skype) have multiple windows, and
need/want to notify the user when a specific window requires attention.
Chat applications are the example where I noticed them, but you could
come up with many examples.

I've uploaded a screenshot of how such an application might look in the
window switcher. In the screenshot, I've circled the area where - I
believe - previous versions of Ubuntu/Unity displayed the window icon
superimposed on a snapshot of the window.
http://ubuntuone.com/1aQPOvotCWxa6MaQ2mrkku

This allowed applications to indicate which of their windows needed
attention, by changing the window icon of such windows. Depending on
window manager, it would be possible to display the icon in the window
decoration, and draw attention to a particular icon in this manner. The
point is, changing a window icon is a useful and portable method for
informing users of windows in need of attention.

Later versions of Ubuntu/Unity stopped displaying these window icons
completely. If a particular application requires attention, that was -
and is - displayed in Unity. But to drill down from that information to
decide which window requires attention has become impossible without
examining the window contents themselves. As such, whether by accident
or design, there now exists a user experience regression in that users
require extra steps and/or time to come to a decision as to which window
of which app demands attention.

Now I don't care whether you just superimpose the window icon again, or
find some alternate means of notifying the user of window content
changes. However, as at least one application (skype) already changes
window icons to inform the user, my guess is that the least effort would
lie in displaying window icons again, in one form or another. As an
alternative, I could envision *detecting that* a window icon has been
changed at run-time, and outlining such windows differently in the
window switcher, or window manager, etc. The point is, the exact
mechanism doesn't matter to me, I just want to see where things have
happened, and quickly.

It is entirely true that working with the Skype team to use Unity-style
chat integration would be desirable; however, as a fairly interested
follower of Skype's activities I would assume that your chances of
successfully doing so are slim. The Linux Skype client has been all but
abandoned (although it still functions just fine). Hence my remark of a
vision (using the messaging menu) that the world (i.e. existing software
unlikely to change) will be asked to conform to. I am sorry if that was
confusing.

One last note for clarity: 'launcher icons were showing the granularity
has always been by "application", so it's not really a regression' - I
agree, the launcher icons were always at application granularity. The
blue corner was in fact always at "whole desktop" granularity. But it
used to be easy to drill down to window granularity; that is no longer
the case, and for the above reasons a usability regression.

The upshot is: to use multi-window applications in which each window may
notify the user of changes effectively, something in the combination of
desktop environment/window manager/window switcher/launcher/etc. should
enable users to quickly detect which window required attention. The
specific method is irrelevant, as long as it is significantly faster
than a scan through the contents of all candidate windows.

I hope this clears things up.

Excellent news! I should've thought of that screenshot earlier :(

Well, I don't mind *where* I can see it, so I didn't think it was useful
to link it to the alt-tab UI. Apparently that was wrong!

[Bug 883000] Re: unity has no way to indicate which dialog is claiming for attention

2012-04-25 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
@johnlea: what if there are two or more windows trying to grab my
attention? With a multi-window messenger, that's a common enough case -
sod's law has it that everyone will try to reach you when you're afk for
your lunch break. So the alt-tab behaviour you describe is helpful, but
still doesn't solve the problem.

I understand why you mark this as "opinion", but would strongly urge you
to reconsider.

At this point, I know too little about how your notification system
stands in relation to freedesktop.org standards. I understand that
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/ApplicationIndicators is
referenced on
http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/StatusNotifierIcon, but
what real-world implications that has is not something I know.

I can therefore imagine that KDE applications, or pure GTK/Qt/Motif
/ applications won't use your system either.
It seems that for a software that is predominantly concerned with
providing an integrated user experience (such as Unity or any other
desktop environment would be), ignoring how legacy/third-party software
acts can only lead to sub-par UX.

Of course the same argument can be made for applications, but if they
don't interoperate with desktop environments, they only hurt themselves
- a DE hurts the whole distribution.

Still, I can't make that choice for you. In the meantime, I just won't
use Ubuntu for communications, as it just can't meet my needs.

[Bug 883000] Re: unity has no way to indicate which dialog is claiming for attention

2012-04-25 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
I guess it might help if I explain that the reason I'm so pushy on this
issue is that I really would like Ubuntu to remain the OS with the best
UX out there. I'm not doing this to be annoying ;)

2012-04-25 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
@seb128: Instances of an application I hadn't even considered.
Interesting.

As for "window icons", it's not so much that I think it's necessary to
show them, I think it's necessary to show that they changed. The easiest
way would be simply to show them, but I can imagine others.

[Bug 989689] [NEW] Synaptics touchpad stops working

2012-04-27 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Public bug reported:

This is related to, but not the same as issue #868400 - specifically,
there are *not* two syndaemon instances running.

A few bits of extra info:

- I've had this issue before upgrading from oneiric to precise, but only in the
last few months. When I first used oneiric, all was fine.
- "disable touchpad while typing" is switched *off*.
- touchpad-indicator correctly displays whether or not the touchpad is working.
- This is on a thinkpad, and the nipple mouse continues to work. So do external
mice.
- In the login screen prior to starting the desktop, the touchpad *always*
seems to work.

Tentatively setting package to gnome-settings-daemon as #868400 has
that.

** Package changed: ubuntu => gnome-settings-daemon (Ubuntu)

[Bug 812513] Re: [4276CTO, Conexant CX20590, Black Headphone Out, Right] docking station audio output does not work

2012-04-03 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Actually, apologies: I currently get sound on the docking station output
on 3.0.0-17-generic #30-Ubuntu SMP. However, the reported rustling still
occurs when typing or moving the mouse. I'm not sure if that is a
software or hardware problem, of course. I will still append logs.

** Tags added: oneiric staging

** Description changed:

  See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/804680 for
  details of the machine.

On the 2.6.38 kernel, the audio output on the docking station is silent,
but when you move the mouse/scroll (seems to be related to graphics
updates), you can hear some rustling noise. Built-in speakers and built-
in audio output work just fine.

On the 3.0.0-0300rc5 and 3.0.0-0300rc6 kernels the same happens, though I've
managed at least once to get the same rustling noise (and nothing else) on the
built-in speakers. Built-in audio output works just fine.

I'm having something similar; I haven't looked for crashes, but my
windows get re-arranged randomly across the desktops. It's quite
possible that unity crashes and restarts, and that's what's causing the
re-arrangement.

[Bug 917134] Re: dbrd8 kernel module and padlock-sha kernel module in deadlock

2012-03-14 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Man, I wanted to get back to this for so long...

Yes, I can reproduce it on demand by simply rebooting the machine. Right
now, there's not much of a problem with that, so if you need me to
reboot this machine a few times, fine.

I'll attach the requested information today (hopefully).

[Bug 917134] Re: dbrd8 kernel module and padlock-sha kernel module in deadlock

2012-03-14 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
So, I was trying to resync the device, get everything in a nice state,
give you the requested info. Then move the padlock-sha module back,
reboot, and see things fail.

Turns out that things fail sooner now. The padlock-sha module is moved
to a safe place, so shouldn't be messing with things. Then I resync the
drbd device, and that seems to work well enough.

After resyncing the machines, I try to switch the htz0 machine to
primary mode (dual-primary mode, the goal is to run ocfs2 on top, htz1
is already in primary mode), and get this:

root@htz0 ~ # drbdadm primary r0
Command 'drbdsetup 0 primary' did not terminate within 121 seconds

I'll attach the requested info for this state.

[Bug 844687] Re: Computer never wakes up from hibernation.

2012-03-03 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Shortly after I posted the previous comment, I got the computer to lock
up without the Android phone connected. Since then I've been paying
attention to whether it happens with the phone connected a lot better,
and it seems unrelated. Sorry for that inadvertent misdirection.

Still happening, albeit less often.

[Bug 800222] Re: Intermittent freeze - UI won't respond to clicks or keypresses

2012-03-03 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
I'm *very* rarely getting a subset of this problem, where mouse clicks
don't register. I use focus-follows-mouse, and when this happens, focus
does not follow the mouse any longer.

However, the keyboard works just fine. When I switch workspaces with the
keyboard, the window that is under the mouse on the new workspace *does*
get focus - it's just that moving the mouse around does not change
focus. It seems as if something happens with the mouse position when
workspaces are switched that doesn't happen otherwise or vice versa.

[Bug 883000] Re: [Oneiric] No more window notifications in Unity

2012-03-05 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 893196 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/893196

#893196 is about alerting the user if *any* window of an application has
been updated. This issue is about informing the user *which* window has
been updated.

Granted, the two are related, but the solution outlined for #893196 does
nothing to solve this issue here.

[Bug 994995] [NEW] Synaptics touchpad ignores "mouse clicks with touchpad" setting

2012-05-05 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Public bug reported:

Presumably this is gnome-settings-daemon.

After upgrading from oneiric to precise, I found that my synaptics
touchpad was always registering "clicks" by tapping on the pad. If I
check the system settings, the "Enable mouse clicks with touchpad"
setting is *off*, however. Changing the setting back and forth does not
change the behaviour.

[Bug 1240850] [NEW] Typo in Timezone/City

2013-10-17 Thread Jens Finkhäuser
Public bug reported:

When selecting your location, the city of Munich in Bavaria/Germany is
recognized as "Munic" - that is not the correct spelling in English.
Alternatively, the German international spelling would be Muenchen, and
the German spelling München.

This is mildly frustrating only insofar as it takes a while to find the
recognized spelling for the place, which you need in order to set the
time zone correctly.

probably not a networking-related problem.

  - I've had this issue before upgrading from oneiric to precise, but only in
the last few months. When I first used oneiric, all was fine.
  - "disable touchpad while typing" is switched *off*.
  - touchpad-indicator correctly displays whether or not the touchpad is
working.
  - This is on a thinkpad, and the nipple mouse continues to work. So do
external mice.
  - In the login screen prior to starting the desktop, the touchpad *always*
seems to work.
