[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring
I, also, am running Max's workaround. The odd thing is that even if you do what he suggests in gnome-session-properties, you'll still see the Gnome keyring wrapper daemon running on the machine. However, it will stop messing with ssh keys, and the standard ssh-agent commands will then work to let you manipulate keys in the usual way because ssh-agent is running. The GUI lead me to believe I was turning off the Gnome keyring wrapper daemon, but apparently that isn't what it really does. So much for truth in advertising. Or something. :) -- Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring
Max, good question. Right now, on the computer in question, I see only the daemon. Not the wrapper. What I saw back in mid-November (when I first tried your workaround) I can't say. I probably had only the daemon itself running at that time as well, but who knows. 8.10 hasn't been nearly stable enough for me to avoid reboots in the interim. At least 2 kernel updates and 3 or 4 issues of a black screen in X (when coming back after the screen saver has been invoked) that won't go away and require a reboot, etc. I wish my Ubuntu experience had been a smooth one, but it's been really rocky. I've got other issues as well that I won't bother to detail here. Anyway, to answer you, it appears the keyring is running, which is apparently the right thing, so disregard my comment. -- Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275010 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm this bug on a vanilla 8.10 install. [Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring
Is there a way to simply turn off gnome-keyring-daemon? If I did that, what else would break? I can't find it in 8.10's "services" management UI, so I don't know if a typical user can shut it down without some sort of nasty issues cropping up. [Bug 312601] [NEW] 8.10 not autodetecting my sound card
Public bug reported: I've installed a 64bit 8.10 (amd64 architecture) on a Dell Optiplex 330. Things are mostly working, but I cannot get sound to work. Nothing that should emit sound from the speakers I have plugged in will do so. (Yes, the speakers are plugged in and turned on.) The volume control icon has a red X next to it. Right clicking on it and selecting open volume control gets the message: No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices found. (Actually, there's a longer version of that message that shows up the first time you do this after starting X, but I don't have that handy and will need to hit submit on this first. If that message is needed I will attach it here later. Just ask.) Trying to track this down, I chased a number of trouble shooting pages on the net and on your site. They all broke down and failed to help me figure out what the problem was. The best I can do is gather the information I was digging up in them and give it to you here. I've already logged in remotely and installed all the packages mentioned in that thread. Many were needed, and this may be the thing that fixes the world. I'll make another post here on Monday sometime and let you know. Again, thanks for the pointers! [Bug 275010] Re: Unable to disable the ssh module of gnome-keyring
I have a related question. In Ubuntu 8.04, Max's workaround doesn't work. (My initial problem was with 8.10, I know.) Max said: 1. Add the line "unset SSH_AUTH_SOCK" to ~/.xsessionrc (creating it if it doesn't exist). 2. Run gnome-session-properties and untick "GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper". But in 8.04, there is no "GNOME Keyring Daemon Wrapper" choice in gnome- session-properties. What I want to do is get gnome-keyring-daemon out of the loop entirely. Don't ask for my ssh passphrase in a dialog window, just let it be entered on the command line. I'll use "ssh-add -D" when I'm done to get things out of memory. Is there some way to get gnome-keyring to stop acting as an ssh-agent (or whatever it's doing) in 8.04 and instead just let the real ssh-agent do it's thing? [Bug 312601] Re: 8.10 not autodetecting my sound card
Sadly, I'm still stuck. Following the advice in this link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=997506 I installed all of the various packages that weren't already present. But when I try the very first thing suggested after that - open System | Preferences | Sound and set the various entries - I discover that there are no choices available in the "Default Mixer Tracks" pulldown. None at all. The attached screen shot shows the window in question. Note that the pulldown labelled "Default Mixer Tracks" is entirely empty and grayed out. Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed from here? Right now this is an entirely quiet computer. While that has some advantages, it's not *entirely* desirable. [Bug 282081] Re: [i965] X hangs and not recoverable after screen saving or logout/login with intel 965gm
I, too, am seeing what may or may not be this problem. I've seen it on two different systems running 8.10. The first was an ancient p3-800MHz that is now retired. The current is a Dell Optiplex 330. I'll attach output pf lspci --vvnn for those who know more than me about these things. In my case, I see two related failures: The screen saver need not have been running for hours. Sometimes just a few minutes will do the trick, but it can be hours. I've seen it with a blank screen and with other screen savers selected. The initial thing is that the system hangs on trying to exit from the screen saver. Where the two failure modes differ is that on occasion (with the old system) I was able to use Ctrl-Alt-F# to switch to a tty. However, having just seen this problem on the new Dell, that was not possible. Sadly I had no access to the system from any other place at the time, so I don't know what was going on. As I could get nothing to work, I forced a hard reboot. I've setup now with a second system that I can ssh in with to see what I can learn when I next see it. This is a significant problem. I hope someone can resolve it. ** Attachment added: "output of lspci -vvnn" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20956283/lspci.out -- [i965] X hangs and not recoverable after screen saving or logout/login with intel 965gm https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282081 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 282081] Re: [i965] X hangs and not recoverable after screen saving or logout/login with intel 965gm
This just hit me again, but this time I was able to recover. Logging in remotely I found nothing obviously wrong. System was almost entirely idle. So I went back to the system keyboard and tried again. Initially I could not get Ctrl-Alt-F# to give me a tty, but eventually I got one after trying several times. Looking around there I still saw nothing abnormal. Finally I hit Ctrl-Alt-F2 and was back at the screen saver password entry dialog. I entered the password and everything worked fine. I'm not convinced this is the same bug that is being discussed above because I don't see X (or any other processes) chewing up CPU. However, the overall failure mode - sporadic inability to exit the screen saver properly - sure seems related. If there are things I can provide to help debug this please let me know. -- [i965] X hangs and not recoverable after screen saving or logout/login with intel 965gm https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282081 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 315219] [NEW] X hangs on exit from screen saver (similar to 282081)
Public bug reported: I was asked to open a new bug for this. Originally I reported it under https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- intel/+bug/282081 but they're trying to keep that one limited, and it isn't clear that it is the same problem. I have: Ubuntu 8.10 (64 bit, amd64 architecture) installed on a Dell Optiplex 330 with 2GB of RAM and built in Intel video: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:29c2] (rev 0a). (I'll attach the output of "lspci -vvnn" to provide full device details.) For reasons having nothing to do with this bug, I have disabled GDM and login at the text prompt, then running startx. At unpredictable intervals, there is a problem when the system comes out of the screen saver. In fact, it can't quite exit the screen saver. I've seen this with two different screen savers selected. Currently I run with just a blank screen and password locking. More specifically, on moving the mouse or pressing a key, I briefly see the password login dialog window appear (for less than a second) then the screen goes black. I cannot get X to let me enter my password. (Alternately perhaps can do so against the black screen, but if I managed it successfully it doesn't resolve the problem.) ssh will still let me in and I can look around. The system is idle and looks normal to me from that vantage point. I see no spinning processes that eat CPU, etc. Exactly what else I can and cannot do varies... Sometimes I can use Ctrl-Alt-F# to switch to a tty and login. Sometimes that won't work. If it does work, sometimes switching back to the X screen afterwards will resolve the problem. Sometimes, even if the switch works, switching back will not resolve the problem, and I am still left with a black screen under X. Assuming that the above did not resolve the problem, things get ugly. On one occasion I managed to use Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to exit X. Then I restarted it and things were fine. On other occasions that has not worked. I have also tried killing the screen saver related processes, but that didn't fix things. This morning I tried that and got back to the X desktop, but no panels appeared, and my running windows were present but lacked content and were unresponsive. From that state Ctrl- Alt-Backspace through things into a pit. The screen became a mess of random pixels and I could not switch to a different tty. I used ssh to get in and reboot. This problem sometimes goes several days without reappearing, and sometimes it will happen multiple times in a single day. I have found no pattern to it. My own suspicion is that this and but 282081 are actually different manifestations of the same underlying problem, but I could easily be wrong. I am attaching 3 files: * output of "lspc -vvnn" * contents of Xorg.0.log just before I issued the reboot command this morning. * contents of Xorg.0.log after the reboot completed I'm not an expert at this, but if there are other things I can provide to help resolve the issue, please ask. I'll try. I would call this an extremely serious bug. I hope someone can resolve it quickly. [Bug 336511] Re: [RV730] Cannot get 8.10 to recognize RV730 (Radeon 4650) card
Well, that is disappointing. Does anyone know if the 4650 will be supported in Ubuntu 9.04? As for testing with your 6.12.0 version, I honestly wouldn't know where to start. If there are instructions available somewhere for what I'd have to copy and/or install on my vanilla Ubuntu 8.10 system to work with what you're describing, I might be willing, but with just that much info I am totally lost. Also, I should ask about the fglrx driver. I tried installing that before reporting this problem and had no luck with that either. Is it the case that the version of that available through ubuntu is also old enough that it doesn't support the 4650? I'm a bit confused there because I found this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- ati/+bug/325431 before I submitted my own. 9.04 is only a month (or 3) away, I suppose. But time will tell, and that only matters if that release will support the 4650. Thanks very much for your help. As I say, if there are instructions or something that will help me test with the new version of things you're describing, I'll try it. --jeffp -- [RV730] Cannot get 8.10 to recognize RV730 (Radeon 4650) card https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/336511 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 200060] Re: cannot print on Epson stylus C80 after 7.04 to 7.10 upgrade
Trying one more time. NOTE: I am using "LogLevel Debug" in my cups.conf file, *exactly* as requested. This time, since I have now learned that the error_log file size changes many times, and that the contents of it are lost as the file is truncated, fills up, is truncated again, and so on, I captured it differently. Here's what I did: cupsys stop modify cupsd.conf to contain "LogLevel debug" verify that error_log is empty tail -f /var/log/cups/error_log >/tmp/cups.error.log.tail (in another window) cupsys start lp textfile (in another window) <> cancel print job cupsys stop abort the tail -f restore state of cupsd.conf and restart cupsd What this caught was roughly the first 1MB of the contents of error_log. Something must truncate that log automatically when it grows to some large size (like 1MB) in the ubuntu system, but this captured the first 1MB of data within the error_log file. I then edited that file and found that once Ghostscript is invoked, it appears to go into an infinite loop. The following lines appear over and over - thousands of times - in the file: D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] GPL Ghostscript SVN PRE-RELEASE 8.61: DEBUG2: cups_get_matrix(0x809e344, 0x81e54b4) D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] cups->header.Duplex = 0 D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] cups->page = 1 D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] cupsPPD = 0x8190f90 D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] cupsPPD->flip_duplex = 0 D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] width = 5940, height = 3960 D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] PageSize = [ 612 792 ], HWResolution = [ 720 360 ] D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] HWMargins = [ 9.000 0.000 9.000 0.000 ] D [14/Mar/2008:16:59:55 -0700] [Job 56] matrix = [ 10.000 0.000 0.000 -5.000 -90.000 3960.000 ] I have edited them out except for the first two copies, so the error_log file is now much smaller - only about 125KB. That is the file I am attaching this time. This shows the full contents of error_log from starting cupsd through to the point where it appears Ghostscript goes into an infinite loop. After this point, the contents of the error_log file is mostly just endless repeats of the Ghostscript messages above, and some contents from the job being held and canceled, but I cannot capture that content easily. I hope this helps, and I need an answer relatively soon. If I cannot get this resolved, I may have to install 7.10 from scratch and hope that the issue was a problem of a bad upgrade from 7.4. However, if ubuntu is distributing a bad version of Ghostscript, that might not fix the issue. Perhaps there is some way to change which version of Ghostscript I am running within the package system? If not, I could try downloading and building the latest stable Ghostscript myself, but I'd rather not. Thanks for any advice you can provide. ** Attachment added: "cups.error.log.tail" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12680577/cups.error.log.tail -- cannot print on Epson stylus C80 after 7.04 to 7.10 upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/200060 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 200060] Re: cannot print on Epson stylus C80 after 7.04 to 7.10 upgrade
That was the problem. Apparently the package name for the gutenprint I installed under 7.04 wasn't checked for by the 7.10 upgrade software, so it installed the second copy of gutenprint from a differently named package. Once I'd removed the one I installed and reconfigured the world, things seem to be working again. Even the KDE printer configuration tool was able to find my old Epson Stylus C80 this time, which it definitely could not do under 7.04. I'm not sure what to call this in the end. Perhaps it isn't a bug per- se, but it does seem to be a problem to me. There have to be others in a similar situation, but perhaps very few actually use the upgrade feature of adept to do the upgrades. An installation from CD that reformated the root directory and replaced all of it's contents would have avoided this issue. I'll probably do that in the future given the pain of this particular issue. Thanks for your help. [Bug 200060] [NEW] cannot print on Epson stylus C80 after 7.04 to 7.10 upgrade
Public bug reported: Today I upgraded from kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10. The upgrade has mostly been smooth, but I am unable to print anymore. Back when I installed 7.04 it took quite a while to get printing working and I have lost all the steps I took at the time. However, I simply cannot get anything to work now. What I know is that kde's printer configuration tool didn't work with gutenprint for some reason in 7.04, so I installed that by hand. Then I used the web URL (http://localhost:631/) to get at most functions. Eventually I wound up installing BEH (the backend error handler) as well. After the upgrade I can see that any job I try to print - even a test page - gets queued up and is listed as "processing" briefly, but then gets switched to "held" status for some reason. I've deleted and recreated the printer several times, fiddling in various ways, but all to no avail. The only possible clue I have at this point is the following error message displayed on the printers page in the CUPS web interface (http://localhost:631/printers/): Gutenprint_USB_Printer_1 "Cannot write /50-jeffp-cupsjob6819: Permission denied" That error message is interesting, but I don't know where it should be trying to write that file. If it really is trying to write it into /, that might be a problem, of course. My version of ubuntu is: $ cat /etc/lsb-release DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.10 DISTRIB_CODENAME=gutsy DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 7.10 I have no idea which package might be the problem here. This was working before the upgrade. I suppose it might be something related to gutenprint, or to the cups system itself. If it's just a permission problem on some directory, that might be something else even. The output of "printbuginfo -u" is attached. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks! I'm confused, What I sent you came from a print with loglevel set to "debug". I've never heard of "debug2" and didn't use that setting. Here are the lines from my cupsd.conf file that I used: # Log general information in error_log - change "info" to "debug" for # troubleshooting... LogLevel warning # LogLevel debug To generate the error_log I previously attached, I commented out "LogLevel warning" and added the "LogLevel debug" line, then restarted cupsd. When I was done I swapped the comments and restarted cupsd again. I'm not sure what to do at this point, but the information I uploaded was generated with "LogLevel debug". Of that I am certain. If there is additional (or different) information I can get you, I would be happy to do so. I'm just at a loss on this case because I think I did as you originally requested. [Bug 797473] Re: Unable to rip both CDs in a set after MusicBrainz NGS update
I am on 10.04 LTS - kept up to date - and this bug is still present. I am having to resort to the basic CD Player app, v 2.1.1, since it doesn't bother talking to musicbrainz. I have to rename every file it creates, but I can, at least, get things ripped in multi-disk sets this way. And when I tried Banshee (installed from the "Ubuntu Software Center") on any CD - a single disk or one of a multi-disk set - I get the error "Could not fetch metadata for CD." I see nothing here about it using Musicbrainz, so I may be confused, but it doesn't seem to want to fetch data about CD contents successfully be default. [Bug 1112061] Re: unity forgets focus-follows-mouse setting across update and reboot
Running 14.04. Installed Unity Tweak Tool specifically to let me turn on focus follows mouse. Did so. Multiple times now I discover that it has reset itself back to focus mode "click" through no action on my part. My best guess it that it can happen mid session, and not just across a reboot, but I haven't yet specifically noted when it happens exactly, nor pinned down a cause. However, when it does happen, the unity tweak tool happily tells me that the mode is back to "click" instead of "mouse". This needs a fix. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1112061 Title: unity forgets focus-follows-mouse setting across update and reboot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/1112061/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux
This is almost certainly the wrong place to post this, but... So far it appears that Linux Mint 13 Xfce runs just fine on my ancient, NVIDIA equipped, non-PAE laptop. There are no issues with focus follows mouse - something that appears to be a serious problem with Unity - and it has a long term support plan (5 years). Sorry, Ubuntu, but I think you've lost me now that it appears I have a real alternative that hasn't lost its way. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/930447 Title: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/930447/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 930447] Re: Unable to start Ubuntu 12.04 live CD with syslinux loader on Pentium M x86 Laptop due to bug in PAE kernel, initramfs or syslinux
This was a surprise. I have hit several problems with Ubuntu of late - mostly related to the underdeveloped open source NVIDIA drivers - but to see 12.04 not even boot from the CD on my Dell 8600 Laptop is just pathetic. I am downloading Luiz's image now and will try that (rumor has it I can get the proprietary NVIDIA drivers back, which appear to be the only things that work for me). Should that image not work, though, I am afraid I may have made my last Ubuntu installation. Don't ask me what I will move to, but the issues are piling up. You cannot discard support for perfectly good machines like this. If you do, I suspect a lot of the community will move on. Don't go there.
