[Bug 336006] [NEW] Unable to burn DVD+R with growisofs

2009-02-28 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dvd+rw-tools

I recently changed my DVD burner (for a LG GH22NS40). Since then, I
haven't been able to burn any DVD+R with growisofs. I can still burn
DVD+R with Wodim without any problem.

Each time I try to burn a DVD+R (I haven't tried DVD-R) with k3b and
growisofs 7.0.1, the burning session ends by:

 4117790720/4172283904 (98.7%) @4.0x, remaining 0:10 RBU 100.0% UBU 100.0%
 4136304640/4172283904 (99.1%) @4.0x, remaining 0:06 RBU 100.0% UBU 100.0%
 4154785792/4172283904 (99.6%) @4.0x, remaining 0:03 RBU 52.1% UBU 100.0%
/dev/scd0: flushing cache
:-[ SYNCHRONOUS FLUSH CACHE failed with SK=3h/ASC=A0h/ACQ=80h]: Input/output
error

I've tried various possible fixes (using first dvd+rw-booktype; using
the -poor-man growisofs option; using different DVD+R brands), with
always the same result.

I've burned over ten DVDs, with the same result each time.

[Bug 1556603] [NEW] No sound in Flash with aa-enabled firefox

2016-03-13 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

During the flash plugin initialization, flash tries to access
"${HOME}/.asoundrc" if this file exists.
But access to this filed is blocked by AppArmor, which makes alsa
initialization fail :

access("/etc/asound.conf", R_OK)= -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory)
access("/home/xxx/.asoundrc", R_OK) = 0
stat("/home/xxx/.asoundrc", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0664, st_size=86, ...}) = 0
open("/home/xxx/.asoundrc", O_RDONLY) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied)
write(2, "ALSA lib conf.c:3419:(config_fil"..., 40) = 40
write(2, "cannot access file /home/xxx"..., 42) = 42
write(2, "\n", 1) = 1
write(2, "ALSA lib conf.c:3339:(snd_config"..., 45) = 45
write(2, "function snd_config_hook_load re"..., 70) = 70
write(2, "\n", 1) = 1
write(2, "ALSA lib conf.c:3788:(snd_config"..., 43) = 43
write(2, "hooks failed, removing configura"..., 36) = 36
write(2, "\n", 1) = 1

Access to this file is authorized by
"/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/audio":

owner @{HOME}/.asoundrc r,

But denied by "/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/private-files", which has
priority:

deny @{HOME}/.*rc mrk,

"/etc/apparmor.d/firefox" calls "/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/audio"
directly.

"/etc/apparmor.d/firefox" calls
"/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/abstractions/ubuntu-browsers.d/firefox"
which calls "/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/abstractions/ubuntu-
browsers.d/java" and "/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/abstractions/ubuntu-
browsers.d/user-files", both of which call "/etc/apparmor.d/abstractions
/private-files".

Removing the "${HOME}/.asoundrc" reactivate sound in flash. But it's
hard to guess.

I've had this issue on 2 different computers. Including after a fresh

[Bug 551719] Re: MD_AUTODETECT=y kernel option is obsolete (boot delay and udev/mdadm (raid) disturbance)

2012-05-06 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
The problem this bug report is about is "boot delay and udev/mdadm
(raid) disturbance". As such, it is a duplicate of #942106.

Then the bug report offers an explanation and a solution.

The MD autodetection only occurs when md drivers are statically compiled
(see https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/md.txt). The Ubuntu MD
drivers are compiled as mdules, so will not be automatically detected.

[Bug 942106] Re: mdadm-functions missing udevadm settle (?)

2012-05-06 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
An explanation: md detection and assembly is done by udev. Each time a
linux_raid partition is detected, udev calls mdadm to do an incremental
assembly.

But nothing is done to be sure incremental assembly is over before
trying to mount the root partition.

This modification makes the "/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-
premount/mdadm" wait for the end of the incremental assembly before
moving over.

I was able to test this patch using the following method: I added a
printed line before and after the "wait_for_udev" command. I then
rebooted a number of times and verified that the first line appeared
from time to time before all MD device were assembled and that the last
line always appeared after all MD device were assembled.

family="unix" sock_type="stream" protocol=0 requested_mask="send receive
connect" denied_mask="send connect" addr=none peer_addr="@/tmp/.ICE-

[Bug 1407818] [NEW] pm-utils reset the vm.dirty_ratio and vm.dirty_background_bytes variables

2015-01-05 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

On a desktop system, on AC power, pm-utils reset the vm.dirty_ratio and
vm.dirty_background_ratio at boot time.

When setting these variables using sysctl.conf, they are silently reset
by the /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/laptop-mode script shipped with pm-
utils.

The only way to give specific values to these variables using sysctl is
to remove this script.

[Bug 1356082] [NEW] Disk encryption password is asked before keymap setup

2014-08-12 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

During the Xubuntu installation, the disk partitioning is done first,
before the keymap setup.

The disk encryption password is therefore always entered using the
QWERTY keymap.

As the password is not echoed on screen, you have no way to know you
have not entered the password you meant to use.

This problem has been reproduced with both Xubuntu 14.04 and 14.04.1 ISO
images.

[Bug 1291105] [NEW] After using spd-say (with pico TTS) with the root account, spd-say stops working for users

2014-03-11 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

The command definition (GenericExecuteSynth) in /etc/speech-
dispatcher/modules/pico-generic.conf use a fixed file name for the wave
file ($TMPDIR/pico.wav):

GenericExecuteSynth \
"pico2wave -w $TMPDIR/pico.wav -l $VOICE \'$DATA\' && $PLAY_COMMAND
$TMPDIR/pico.wav

If you use spd-say or a speech dispatcher enabled application with root,
it will create the pico.wav file owned by root with restricted
permissions.

If you try to use spd-say with a different user, it will then fail,
failing to access the /tmp/pico.wav file.

A solution would be to create a temporary file per user ID:

GenericExecuteSynth \
"USERID=`id -u` ; pico2wave -w $TMPDIR/pico-$USERID.wav -l $VOICE \'$DATA\' &&
$PLAY_COMMAND $TMPDIR/pico-$USERID.wav"

[Bug 992748] [NEW] Login screen does not appear over GL-screensavers

2012-05-01 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

When using a GL-screensaver (from xscreensaver-gl or xscreensaver-gl-
extra), the login dialog is not displayed any more over the screen
saver.

You can still connect, but you have to blindly type-in your password.

This was working fine with Oneiric.

I tried switching from fglrx to fglrx-updates, but the problem remains.

The login dialog is shown correctly over a 2D screensaver.

Thanks.

[Bug 1014369] [NEW] gnome-format fails to start from menu

2012-06-17 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

The gnome-format menu uses the su-to-root script but does not use the
"-X" option.

When launched from the menu, it tries to get a password from standard

[Bug 942106] Re: software raid doesn't assemble before mount on boot

2012-05-16 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Setting multiple md arrays seems to be a good way to reproduce this bug
(see #682019). Or maybe just a big md array.

After that, it's just a timing issue. After rebooting several times, you will
probably run into this issue.

[Bug 942106] Re: software raid doesn't assemble before mount on boot

2012-05-17 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
The Debian mdadm scripts uses an explicit assembly in initramfs and
seems to offer a lot more of fallback logic than we currently have.

Also, udev settle makes you wait for devices that might not be
necessary for boot.

The full Debian mdadm initramfs logic seems to be a good alternative
to the current logic.

[Bug 889664] [NEW] No network access with Trendnet TU2-ET100

2011-11-12 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to use a USB Network adapter, Trendnet TU2-ET100 (AX88772).
This adapter is managed by the asix.ko kernel module.

When I boot with the adapter plugged-in, the adapter seems to configure
cleanly, but I get no network access.

This used to work with older version of Ubuntu (9.04 if I am not
mistaken).

I've been able to use this adapter using hot plug. But when the adapter
is plugged during boot, there seems to be no way to get a connexion.

[Bug 880699] Re: gnome 3 authentication wrong user password

2011-11-13 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
This is a known gnome 3 issue:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=651547

It's bad, because it breaks the Ubuntu admin authentication logic.

[Bug 890004] [NEW] Everything is now 99

2011-11-13 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

The weather applet only shows a question mark.
The tooltip says "Failed to update weather info.".
Clicking on it, the first tab is empty, the second one displays a "99" on each
information line.

I tried to set up the applet with several cities, but the result is
always the same.

[Bug 827666] [NEW] Please import the upstream French translation

2011-08-16 Thread Jean-Philippe Guérard
Public bug reported:

The upstream French translation of xkeyboard-config is up-to-date and should be
imported in Ubuntu:
http://translationproject.org/PO-files/fr/xkeyboard-config-2.3.fr.po

This translation is even available on the source xkeyboard-config listed here:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/xkeyboard-config/2.3-1ubuntu1/+files/xkeyboard-config_2.3.orig.tar.gz

The launchpad translation tries to redo a lot of work already done upstream:
https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/oneiric/+source/xkeyboard-config/+pots/xkeyboard-config/fr/+details

HTH.
