I am having the same problem in Ubuntu Maverick (beta).  Creating the symbolic 
links:
  sudo ln -s /dev/snd /dev/sound
  sudo ln -s /dev/dsp /dev/snd/dsp
as mentioned in other forums did not fix the problem.
