[Bug 1693544] Re: power loss with kernels newer than 4.1 in Ubuntu 16.04

2017-05-30 Thread Jason Joines
I have been running ~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.12-rc2 for over 5 days now
with neither screen blinking nor power loss.

I had also tried the vanilla 4.11.2 kernel from kernel.org, which did
have the problem.

It seems like a fix occurred sometime between 4.11.2 and 4.12-rc2.

[Bug 1693544] [NEW] power loss with kernels newer than 4.1 in Ubuntu 16.04

2017-05-25 Thread Jason Joines
Public bug reported:

I am using Ubuntu 16.04 with KDE Neon User Edition on a Lenovo T510.
The screen blinks periodically. I describe it as a blink because it
seems to switch off and right back on very quickly, as if I had just
blinked by eyes. At seemingly random times, the screen will go black
except for a tiny sliver of orange or yellow along the left edge, then
the machine loses power.

I have searched the logs and it seems that all logging just stops before
the power outage without actually logging anything useful.

This problem began shortly after I migrated from Kubuntu 14.04, so I
installed a 3.13.0 kernel from the Ubuntu 14.04 repository and the
problem went away. I then tried a 4.1.38 kernel from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline. The 4.1 kernel is also
problem free and the most recent kernel I can run without the power
outages.

However, all of these kernels have the power outage issue:
Name VersionSource

-
linux-image-generic4.4.0.78.8416.04
repository
linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 4.8.0.52.2316.04
repository
linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04-edge 4.10.0.21.14 16.04
repository
linux-image-4.11.0-041100rc8-generic 4.11.0-041100rc8.201704232131
kernel.ubuntu.com

These kernels are fine:
Name VersionSource

-
linux-image-3.13.0-24-generic 3.13.0-24.47 14.04
repository
linux-image-4.1.38-040138-generic 4.1.38-040138.201701181632
kernel.ubuntu.com

So, it seems the problem originated sometime between versions 4.1.38 and
4.4.0.

[Bug 1357522] [NEW] kscreensaver science screen saver does not function in kubuntu 14.04.1

2014-08-15 Thread Jason Joines
Public bug reported:

I am using 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS installed on a Lenovo T510 laptop
via the 14.04.1 Ubuntu Server install with KDE via the kubuntu-full
package. The science screen saver from package kscreensaver
4:4.13.3-0ubuntu0.1 does not function.

Expected behavior is to show the desktop with distortions when the
screen saver activates or the screen is locked. Instead when the screen
is locked or the screen saver is activated, behavior is to activate the
simple locker and distort that screen.

Executing /usr/bin/kscience.kss directly results in a small window that
shows a screen capture of the top left of my desktop with distortions
running there.

The problem is the same on a separate laptop with different hardware and
64 bit Kubuntu 14.04 installed via the Kubuntu install and then upgraded
to 14.04.1.

[Bug 339648] Re: recordmydesktop produces "Broken pipe: Overrun occurred" in Kubuntu Jaunty with HDA Intel

2011-11-20 Thread Jason Joines
The --buffer-size 65536 got rid of the overrun error for me too but did
not fix the problem of getting out of sync. I've also tried
recorditnow, istanbul, and gtk-recordmydeskop but all have the same
issue of getting out of sync.

I tried the recordSoundAndDesktop.sh from this bug report. Had to
replace -fps and -v_quality with --fps and --v_quality first. The
result was a video with audio and video still out of sync that also ran
way to fast.

2011-02-16 Thread Jason Joines
This bug is still present in 10.04.2. My cronjobs as root were failing
with "Authentication failure" messages in /var/log/syslog. I had use
the same edit of /etc/shadow mentioned earlier in this post to fix the
problem.

[Bug 750649] Re: [Lenovo W510/T410/T510] System is unable to suspend

2011-04-20 Thread Jason Joines
Resume from hibernate in Natty just stopped working on my Lenovo
ThinkPad T510. It worked fine until running update's last night.
Updates today also gave errors when trying to update apport.

Kernel is 2.6.38-8.42. I'm using the integrated intel graphics.

The problem is a kernel OOPS at boot. These seem to be the relevant log
