I've been having this issue with 12.04 and it breaks a lot of multilib
support, a quick search of the Ubuntu forums shows this issues has
cropped up on a number of machines in the past weeks:


The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libc6-dev-amd64:i386 : Depends: libc6-amd64:i386 (= 2.15-0ubuntu10.4) but it is 
not going to be installed
Recommends: gcc-multilib:i386 but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

I've tried manually installing libc6-amd64:i386  but it won't install:
dpkg: regarding .../libc6-amd64_2.15-0ubuntu20.1_i386.deb containing 
libc6-amd64:i386:
 libc6 conflicts with libc6-amd64
  libc6-amd64:i386 (version 2.15-0ubuntu20.1) is to be installed.
dpkg: error processing Downloads/libc6-amd64_2.15-0ubuntu20.1_i386.deb 
(--install):
 conflicting packages - not installing libc6-amd64:i386
Errors were encountered while processing:
 Downloads/libc6-amd64_2.15-0ubuntu20.1_i386.deb

According to top in 11.10 AMD64 the problem is still periodically
present, unity-service-panel always consumes 10% CPU and can use 100%
until I manually restart it.
