[Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is
Proposed solution: * In context menu rename "Create Archive" to "Compress..." * The subsequent dialog box should be re-titled to read: "Create compressed file" * The input box on the dialog box should be re-labelled from 'Archive' to 'Filename' * Change "Archive Manager" to "Compressed Files" on the Applications menu (with tooltip "Create and edit compressed files") More data and discussion can be found here: * http://www.designintheopen.org/profiles/blogs/zip-archive-package-or and * http://www.ivankamajic.com/?p=143#comment-23493 ** Description changed: A new user thinks "I need to create a zip file", and doesn't know how to do it. If you don't know that a zip file is an "archive", which many new users do not, then it's very difficult to tell how to create one. "Create archive" on the Nautilus context menu, "Archive Manager" in the Applications menu, etc, are all meaningless. (This happened to me today when someone I know rang me for technical support to ask how to create a zip file, and when I explained how, he said "what's an archive?") Suggested fixes (to be taken with a very large pinch of salt and replaced with better suggestions): Change "Create archive" to "Create compressed file" on the context menu Change "Archive Manager" to "Compressed Files" on the Applications menu (with tooltip "Create and edit compressed files") http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=300655 Then won't you get questions like: "What's a compressed file"? Perhaps some other wording may help such as: "Create a safe copy of a file". + + Proposed solution: + * In context menu rename "Create Archive" to "Compress..." + * The subsequent dialog box should be re-titled to read: "Create compressed file" + * The input box on the dialog box should be re-labelled from 'Archive' to 'Filename' + * Change "Archive Manager" to "Compressed Files" on the Applications menu (with tooltip "Create and edit compressed files") + + More data and discussion can be found here: + * http://www.designintheopen.org/profiles/blogs/zip-archive-package-or and + * http://www.ivankamajic.com/?p=143#comment-23493 ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Status: In Progress => Confirmed ** Changed in: hundredpapercuts Assignee: Ivanka Majic (ivanka) => (unassigned) -- "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 15495] Re: "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is
The aim of the paper cuts project is to improve the usability of the Ubuntu desktop. What this debate reflects is that there are many ways to solve this problem; what the design team aims to do is resolve these discussions by conducting research with a broader audience. In order to use something a person does not need to have an accurate picture of how it works, they need to be able to predict the effect a particular action will have. Mental models don't need to be correct to be useful. I recommend Compress because all the participants could predict what that might do and why they might use it and terms like Archive and Zip were less clear to people. To quote one participant: "I know what a zip is on my jacket?" Based on research, the solution from the design team is: * In the context menu rename "Create Archive" to "Compress..." * The subsequent dialog box should be re-titled to read: "Create compressed file" * The input box on the dialog box should be re-labelled from 'Archive' to 'Filename' What I would really like to do is heal 100 paper cuts for Karmic - let's try this now and, if usability testing shows this is not the optimum solution we can improve it in Karmic +1. -- "Archive Manager" doesn't mean anything if you don't know what an "archive" is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 344839] [NEW] Cannot Mount External drive error message is unhelpful
Public bug reported: On Ubuntu 8.10 I plugged in my external hard drive and got the Cannot Mount Volume pop-up error. Clicking on details reveals a more detailed error message. 1) There seem to be other bugs which deal with the actual mounting of external drives so that is not what I am reporting. 2) The error messaging is not end-user facing and could be significantly improved. The related actions are not helpful and leave the user with an error from which there is no obvious path to recovery. In the short term I suggest that the text in the details area be cleaned up to make it more legible. The actual text itself could be structured more like: The device you just plugged in cannot be read Option 1: Option 2: The actual text of the options can remain the same in the short term. In the long term it might be nice to redesign this to include some simpler imagery and language (for example, Mount is new terminology to many people) as well a more obvious Help button or link. The design would need a little bit of time and discussion which I am happy to get involved with if and when there is time. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Cannot Mount External drive error message is unhelpful https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/344839 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 344839] Re: Cannot Mount External drive error message is unhelpful
Hi Dominik, Thank you for taking the time to review this bug. I am quite new to Ubuntu bug reporting as an activity so please bear with me while I present a more robust case. In my weak attempt to provide a short-term solution I think I diluted the strength of my message. Due to the fact that this usability bug prevents the user from taking a next step and completing their intended task I believe it should be reclassified. As it stands, any non-technical user is not likely to expand the details and, in the unlikely event that they do, the language and presentation of the error message is a significant barrier to them recovering from the error. If we take a look at the GNOME Human Interfaces Guidelines on Warning and Error messages (http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable /language-errors.html.en) this error message clearly does not conform. There is a difference between a usability bug which prevents a user from completing their task and one where the experience could be improved. This error message definitely falls into the former. A fairly widely used list of usability heuristics (http://www.useit.com/papers/heuristic/heuristic_list.html) includes Error prevention and Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from error. I suggest that at the very least the short-term solution I propose should be implemented and that a design which includes a more appropriate icon and open and available steps for recovery should be implemented. On the downloads page there is a delay before the music starts downloading. The current implementation gives the user no indication that something is happening and because it takes about a minute to start actually downloading the user can be forgiven for thinking that something is broken. [Bug 1056488] Re: Messaging menu title icons are indistinct
Attached is an updated set of icons. 1. They increase contrast between the chat status color and the envelope colors. 2. They add slight spacing around the chat status to make the shapes clearer. Two other bug fixes will also improve the appearance: 3. By mistake, the previous icons were too small and a bit blurry. David Calle fixed that yesterday. 4. The "Available" icon appears by default even when you're offline. Ken VanDine will fix that soon, so that by default you get just the envelope. Bug 1046360 I propose that we look into these icons in more detail for 13.04 and will file and target a bug. ** Attachment added: "messaging-menu-icons.zip" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-mono/+bug/1056488/+attachment/3365465/+files/messaging-menu-icons.zip -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1056488 Title: Messaging menu title icons are indistinct To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-mono/+bug/1056488/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1060301] [NEW] Messaging menu title icons are suboptimal
Public bug reported: 1) Using 7px emblems on an already small icon needs to be reconsidered. 2) Using a single icon to indicate new messages vs chat status is a challenge. We would like to explore an icon set which is more functional in terms of communicating, and better adheres to the intended aesthetic. A couple of early ideas: - make use of the mono status icons that were used in the 10.04 (and 10.10?) Me Menu. - Experiment with bigger emblems to create a clearer overlap. [Bug 344839] Re: Cannot Mount External drive error message is unhelpful
This is a bug in two parts. First is the fact that the drive couldn't mount which is a technical issue of some description. Second is the error message itself which is unhelpful. I appreciate that it isn't always possible to suggest what a user might do to rectify the problem but it is necessary in order to provide a good experience even when things go wrong. As it currently stands the offline equivalent is this: I am sitting on a train on my way from Brighton to London. The announcer apologises that train has encountered a problem and is canceled. I am left standing on a platform trying to find out how to get to work. A better experience is this. I am sitting on a train on my way from Brighton to London. The announcer apologises that the train is being canceled and suggests that I go to Platform X to catch and alternative train. I am still late, but I am not standing on a platform clueless as to what to do next. ** Tags added: ux-errormessage -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/344839 Title: Cannot Mount External drive error message is unhelpful -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 706896] Re: Define/create banner/s
I have spoken to Daniel about providing you with mockups that don't use this space. In the absence of useful messaging and because we should be promoting features in context and not by using crude banners I think this bug should be closed as 'Won't fix'. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/706896 Title: Define/create banner/s -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 706899] Re: Define messages and images when info is not available
I propose that this be marked as won't fix. In the next release we should re-examine what the toolbar area is used for also, once one starts exploring this particular problem there are actually a few different layers to it. For example, in *My Folder* there is space that is indeed available to me but in any folder that is shared with me one might argue that the space is merely unused! In any case, this is a low priority issue at this stage. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/706899 Title: Define messages and images when info is not available -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
