If it helps in any way I managed to correct the problem by deleting the
original icon and once the icon reappears indicating incoming mail I
than pin the new icon to the bar. This appeared to fix the issue. The
issue also occurred with Transmission and Xchat which may suggest an
issue when icons are pinned automatically following an upgrade.

The same solution worked for both xchat and transmission. Can't tell you
if it's occurred again as I've now ditched unity and gone back to gnome
desktop.

can't nail down if anything inparticular is causing it. When the
application again has focus all that does appear is Close from 1
