[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-06-27 Thread Hessian DeJesus
Kevin LeBlanc, I have a very similar Machine, Dell D610, I915 Chipset, 1
Gig Ram, 80 Gig HDD. I was about to format and go back to vista or 7. I
will try your excellent detailed instructions and report back. My
freezes seem to only occur with FF 13 open and when I press the super
key, or dash home button. I am running a totally up to date clean
install of 12.04 32 bit. My temps are good (range from 40-55 C). Odd
thing is does not always happen, but when it does the KB is totally
locked, there is no flashin disk activity light, the USB and touchpad
are able to move the mouse but I can not get any of the click button to
do anything. I am running 3.2.0-25-generic-pae. I closely watch system
monitor and never go above 50% usage Memory and 20% usage of my 1 GIG
swap partition. Peace

HUGE kudos to Kevin LeBlanc, my system is stable thanks to his solution. See
post 329 above for details. Now if I could just play flash videos in FF 13
without my temps soaring to 70 C.. (my work around is to use my ASUS with win7
(LOL)
"You may need to go into the "Previous Linux Versions" in order to find the
older kernel. If this is the case, then a step was missed."
I must have missed a step but having to do 1 extra key stroke after power on to
have a stable OS is a very small price to pay!

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-07 Thread Hessian DeJesus
Tomasz Ostrowski see #328 above, I am not new to computers but a novice to
Linux and I was able to do it. As a side benefit I am now confident using
Synaptic Package manager, It was the last thing I installed after removing
Ubuntu Software Center. I also did a system image using ReDO backup prior to
any changes but thanks to Kevin LeBlanc's excellent instructions I had no
problems.
Does anyone here know if I am creating an image to an external USB HDD is there
a "best" file system to have the drive formatted to? I will be using the
external for full images only - no sharing with other OS's.

2012-07-09 Thread Hessian DeJesus
In addition to the suggestion in #328, I also disabled java script in FF 13.
Edit- Preferences- Content. I always have done a similar tweak with windows & I
did it in Ubuntu just out of habit. No freezes under moderate usage for almost
2 weeks now!
I doubt this matters but I created 4 partitions when I last did my last fresh
install - boot - swap- 2 file system. Then the kernel roll back.
(I had been using 2 partitions with the "standard PAE kernel" ) and had many
freezes.
Thanks Stehem, I am about to dual boot win 7 and 12.04 on a modern 64 bit
system, your tip will come in handy! =)
