[Bug 244996] [NEW] segmentation fault when starting firefox-3.0

2008-07-02 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

When running firefox (3.0+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1) it won't come up.
On the command line i just get this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ firefox
Segmentation fault

I ran across the wiki entry about bugreporting for firefox, so please find the
gdb-output attached.
I already tried reinstalling all packages including the ones firefox depends
on, so I doubt it's a harddisk failure.
Running the ProfileManager segfaults as well - no hope of using a fresh
profile. Moving the $HOME/.mozilla dir out of the way to get rid of the
extensions I use doesn't help at all.

Unfortunately I'm not sure if this is firefox-specific, because the
latest thunderbird behaves the same :-(

Pls. let me know if you need more information on this issue.

Using Kubuntu 8.04 with latest packages.

[Bug 244996] Re: segmentation fault when starting firefox-3.0

2008-07-10 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Ok, gotta close this bug - it wasn't firefox' fault, it was due to some
weird settings in gtk-qt-engine. After setting back the styles in the
systemsettings everything went smoothly again. Thanks to
forum, ubuntuusers.de who set me on the right path. Sorry for the
inconvenience

I don't see a link for closing the bug myself, so someone else close it
who's able to. Thx

Friedemann

[Bug 256817] Re: Integrate hdaps_protect for hard disk protection

2008-08-22 Thread Friedemann Schorer
The latest protect patch as well as some comments for the release can be
found on the net, e.g. here:

http://news.gmane.org/group/gmane.linux.drivers.hdaps.devel/last=/force_load=t

I strongly support the inclusion of the disk protect patch!

Thanks in advance for your work!

[Bug 51893] Re: aptitude pegs cpu for extended period of time on startup

2006-07-23 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Same here.
Some more information:
I'm running Dapper plus edgy enhancements (switching in progress...), and since
the latest upgrade of apt (0.6.44.2ubuntu4), aptitude (0.4.1-1.1ubuntu2) and
dpkg (1.13.22ubuntu4).
Now when I invoke aptitude all those progress bar increase in parts of seconds,
only the building of the package state takes up to minutes (on a AMD K7 2800+),
and the cpu usage is high up in the nineties. Updating the packages list and
installing/upgrading packages works fast as usual.

Pls let me know if I can be of more help to track this down.

[Bug 165118] Wrong version number confuses upgrade function

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ksudoku

When using the function "Check for updates" from the Web menu, ksudoku reports
to be version
0.3 instead of the correct 0.4 and offers to upgrade the application.
Not really a problem, but a little confusing for the unexperienced ;)

Friedemann

Take a look at

It walks you through the compilation.

[Bug 200109] [NEW] DMA for firewire opens security hole

2008-03-09 Thread Friedemann Schorer
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

As Adam Boileau and others pointed out, Firewire has direct memory access
without any participation of the OS.
Using some nice tools he provides on his website
http://storm.net.nz/projects/16 one can access the whole memory of a target
computer as soon as one has physical access - no reboot needed! Some
explanations on backgrounds and how to do it can be found in a PDF containing
the slides of his talk at RuxCon 2006:
http://storm.net.nz/static/files/ab_firewire_rux2k6-final.pdf

There's a very easy solution to this: ohci1394 should be loaded with
option "phys_dam=0" by default - maybe this slowdowns Firewire access a
little, but the computer can't be forged anymore!

At least Gutsy doesn't do this as far as I can tell (my laptop didn't
have the option set, according to modconf - now it has...)

[Bug 86043] pls include tp_smapi into linux-restricted-modules

2007-02-18 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-restricted-modules-generic

IBM/Lenovo laptops include a generic hardware interface which can be
addressed and used for several hardware managing purposes after a gpl'ed
kernel module has been loaded: tp_smapi.ko

Further information about this module can be found at
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/tp_smapi

I'd really appreciate if you included this module into the linux-generic
or linux-restricted-modules packages and also patched the hdaps module
according to the instructions on the page given above so that these two
modules don't interfer with each other.

Keep up your great work - you really rock!!

[Bug 570067] [NEW] flash plugin crashing when going fullscreen

2010-04-26 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chromium-browser

The flash plugin works fine embedded (regardless which flash package is
installed), but when I hit the fullscreen button to view a video in full size
(e.g. at Youtube) the plugin crashes.
As Firefox did so likewise I tried to add a line to the chromium startupscript
which reads like this:

export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so

After doing so the flash plugin works fine in fullscreen mode.

[Bug 304079] Re: thinkpad_ec and thus tp_smapi can not be loaded

2010-04-18 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Still an issue with linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic as of today. Tried to compile
the tp_smapi modules via dkms (package tp-smapi-dkms, compile gave no errors),
but trying to insert the modules (thinkpad_ec, tp_smapi, hdaps) leads to the
same error as mentioned by the original poster
Issuing the parameter "force_io=1" while loading thinkpad_ec makes the module
load ok, afterwards the other two load as well. I successfully control the
laptops' fan via tpfand which accesses the SMAPI features these modules make
accessible to the linux kernel.

[Bug 454933] Re: regression: tp_smapi kernel modules missing in latest kernel image

2010-04-23 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Still a bug according to the original description, although it is
partially solved by package tp-smapi-dkms which allows automatic
compilation and installation of the latest tp-smapi modules
(tp_smapi.ko, hdaps.ko, thinkpad_ec.ko) on installation of a new kernel.
Alas, there is still a bug with that: One of those modules is present in
the latest kernel packages, so depmod will see two of them :/

Will file a bug report on that issue if nobody else did so far...

[Bug 569161] [NEW] dkms compiles and installs modules fine, but doesn't remove existing modules

2010-04-23 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

AFAIUI tp-smapi-dkms has been designed to have dkms compile and install
tp-smapi modules for every newly installed kernel automatically.
It does great in that job - with a small little exception: the latest kernel
packages do include one of the modules deriving from tp-smapi, but that is not
removed from /lib/modules/$KERNEL-VERSION.
I removed the original file manually and ran depmod -a afterwards, but I guess
quite a number of Thinkpad owners don't know enough about Linux to find out
there are two modules with the same name in the modules tree...

[Bug 442521] [NEW] last.fm plugin demands being a paying last.fm member though not necessary

2009-10-04 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

Just updated to Karmic Beta und tried the included Amarok 2.1.90 version - and
found a little annoying bug:
Playing Last.fm streams is free for some countries including Germany where I
happen to live. When trying to play a last.fs strem I get the error message I
have to be a paying last.fm member - which is untrue.

Don't know if this is fixed in 2.2.0 which has been released nor if this
is a kubuntu specific problem - it is one nevertheless ;-)

At least as of linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic 2.6.31-14.48 the kernel
packes does not ínclude the kernel modules necessary to access some
specific hardware used on Thinkpad laptops - I was quite happy to find
them in some earlier packages in karmic and sadly miss them, cause
compiling them manually is not what I like best ;-)

Thanks for re-adding them (in advance ;-) )

[Bug 1445392] [NEW] wrong location of shared library

2015-04-17 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from14.10 to 15.04 beta2 yesterday I ran into troubles
with systemd. After installing kde-config-systemd systemsettings
complained about a missign shared library.

Starting systemsetting from command line I got the following:

Error loading plugin "kcm_systemd" "The shared library was not found."
Plugin search paths are ("/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins", "/usr/bin")
The environment variable QT_PLUGIN_PATH might be not correctly set
Error loading plugin: "The shared library was not found."

Investigating brought up the fact that kcm_systemd.so is located in
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/plugins/, but $QT_PLUGIN_PATH is set to
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt5/plugins:/lib/kde5/plugins/

After doing a symlink the problem vanished.

Re: [Bug 1445488] Re: audio hardware not recognized

2015-04-17 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Nope - trying 3.16.0-34-generic at this moment, none of the bugs I reported
today vanished by changing kernel. Still audio hardware not supported, neither
USB/Bluetooth mouse nor external USB HDD recognized.

[Bug 997608] [NEW] php-apc v3.1.10 reports v3.1.9

2012-05-10 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

Recompiled php-apc from quantal sources for my lucid system to get the latest
version available.
After disabling php4enmod in /var/lib/dpkg/info/php-apc.postinst to solve the
php5enmod-problem (bug #994882) I got the version 3.1.10 installed, but the
included apc.php status page reports it as version 3.1.9, as does phpinfo();

apport and ubuntu-bug rejected filing a bugreport, so there's little
information. pls let me know if you need more information and how to
provide it.

[Bug 1521286] [NEW] unable to login after upgrade vivid -> wily

2015-11-30 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

Got a Kubuntu 15.04 system on my laptop.
Upon upgrading towards 15.10 release suddenly the greeter wasn't presented
anymore upon boot. Logging in to the console and then 'startx' made KDE work,
but it was a PITA ...

A little searching revealed the problem: Apparently the upgrade involved
a change in some directories used, and the upgrade process didn't create
the dir containing the .Xauthority file.

Reproducible: upon every boot

Solution:
[as root] mkdir -p /var/lib/lightdm; chown -R lightdm:lightdm /var/lib/lightdm
; chmod 0750 /var/lib/lightdm

Now it works as expected...

[Bug 1004683] [NEW] pcscd fails to access Reiner SCT CyberJack card reader

2012-05-25 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

I tried to access my banking card for the first time since upgrading to Precise
Pengolin, but the system behaved somewhat strange:
When i plug the reader into the USB port I usually get a LED flashing a few
times and some info about the device and its firmware version. I saw this today
as well, but instead of waiting for actions from the banking software the
display fell dead again and I couldn't do my banking.
I investigates a bit and found this in syslog every time I plugged in the
reader:

May 25 21:50:00 host kernel: [ 8119.920068] usb 2-2: new full-speed USB device
number 9 using uhci_hcd
May 25 21:50:01 host mtp-probe: checking bus 2, device 9:
"/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.0/usb2/2-2"
May 25 21:50:01 host mtp-probe: bus: 2, device: 9 was not an MTP device

Scanning through udev rules I found the device in /lib/udev/rules.d/40
-libifd-cyberjack6.rules:

ATTR{idVendor}=="0c4b", ATTR{idProduct}=="0400", MODE="660",
GROUP="pcscd"

Looks good to me, so I'm a bit lost for now.
Maybe this is a udev problem, not pcscd's ?

My setup information:
Description:Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
Release:12.04

pcscd:
  Installiert: 1.7.4-2ubuntu2
  Kandidat:1.7.4-2ubuntu2
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 1.7.4-2ubuntu2 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/universe i386 Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Please let me know if and how I can be of any help to solve this.

Thanks for your hard work, I love working with Ubuntu every day, as it
fits my needs.

Friedemann

[Bug 1004683] Re: pcscd fails to access Reiner SCT CyberJack card reader

2012-05-25 Thread Friedemann Schorer
One more note: I googled a bit and found Reiner SCT's support forum where
someone mentioned a package libpcsc-ctapi-wrapper0 which can be found at
https://launchpad.net/~linrunner/+archive/ppa/+sourcepub/1727348/+listing-archive-extra
Installation of that packages lead the author to a working setup. No success
here :-(

[Bug 689089] [NEW] Clamav fails to start because of unspecified LogFile

2010-12-11 Thread Friedemann Schorer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: clamav

Just upgraded to the latest version of clamav (0.96.5+dfsg-

config file provided by the maintainer. Now every time I try to start
the service I get this:

u...@box:~$ sudo service clamav-daemon start
 * Starting ClamAV daemon clamd
 ERROR: LogFile

Closing the main socket.
  [fail]

OK, let's try to find what is specified:

u...@box:~$ grep LogFile /etc/clamav/*
/etc/clamav/clamd.conf:LogFile 0
[...]

Looks like there's something not specified here...

OK, let's try and see if setting a file removes the error:

u...@box:~$ grep LogFile /etc/clamav/*
/etc/clamav/clamd.conf:LogFile /var/log/clamav/clamav.log

I used the location of the existing file here.

frscho...@ebox:~$ sudo service clamav-daemon start
