You should read the fine manual /usr/share/doc/boinc-client/README.Debian and
after that have a look at /etc/default/boinc-client, and change BOINC_DIR to

[Sync Request] boinc universe

Changelog since current edgy version 5.4.10-1:

boinc (5.4.11-1) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Frank S. Thomas ]
  * New upstream release.
  * Added the header file lib/gui_rpc_client.h to the boinc-dev package as
requested by Folkert van Heusden.
  * debian/control:
- Removed Greg Norris <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> from the Uploaders field.
  * debian/rules:
- Applied patch from Robert Millan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> which simplifies the
platform override for i386. We are now using --target instead of the
--build and --host switches. This also needed some changes in
boinc-client.install and boinc-manager.install. Thanks Robert for the
  patch. (closes: #383871)
  * debian/patches/:
- Added 01_amd64-disable-platform-reset.dpatch from Robert Millan
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. This patch prevents that projects are reset when the
platform name in client_state.xml does not match the platform name the
client was compiled for and it also sets the platform name from
client_state.xml as the valid platform name which will be used for
scheduler requests. This patch only affects AMD64. (related to: #366741)
  * Explain in boinc-client's README.Debian how to modify the BOINC core
client so that it downloads 32bit applications on AMD64. The
01_amd64-disable-platform-reset.dpatch patch is mandatory for this
procedure to work correctly. (also related to: #366741, LP#51948)
  * Added two helper scripts (move-boinc-dir.sh and use-32bit-on-amd64.sh)
as examples in the boinc-client package.

boinc (5.4.10-2) unstable; urgency=medium

  [ Frank S. Thomas ]
  * Removed -ffast-math from the client's optimization flags because it causes
a floating point exception on Alpha when the client is started.
(closes: #379137)
  * Added conffile /etc/boinc-client/log_flags.xml which can be used to turn
on/off logging and debugging messages. For a detailed list of messages
that can be turned on/off, see http://boinc.berkeley.edu/client_msgs.php
Note that this file was renamed to cc_config.xml in BOINC (>= 5.5.2).
  * Applied patches from Peter Bailis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for the boinc_cmd
manual page. Thanks again Peter!
  * debian/control:
- Added boinc-app-seti to boinc-client's Suggests field.

This will sound pedantic but the real problem is that BOINC _projects_ do not
support AMD64. In Debian there is now a package of the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
application
for BOINC called boinc-app-seti. If you install this on AMD64 the BOINC core
client will use the application included in this package to crunch [EMAIL
PROTECTED]
work units. So you are finally able to use the AMD64 version of the client.

The [EMAIL PROTECTED] Classic project has ended in December 2005
(http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/classic.php) which makes KSetiSpy obsolete.
It's not useful to keep this old and unmaintained package (both upstream and
Debian packaging) around, so please remove ksetispy from the edgy archive.

Probably all other packages that only work with [EMAIL PROTECTED] Classic and
the
setiathome package itself should be removed too.

Here is a list of packages that only work with the dead [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Classic but

 ksetisaver
 setiathome
 tkseti
 wmsetimon
 wmufo

They were already removed from Debian, see:

That is not the case. Your problem is that you only have the boinc-manager
package installed and not boinc-client. Since the BOINC Manager is able to
monitor remote hosts, it is not needed that the BOINC client runs on the same
host as the BOINC Manager, and therefore the boinc-manager package does not
depend on the boinc-client package.

This is drawback in the "Add/Remove Applications" program. It apparently only
lists programs that have a *.desktop file. Use the Synaptic package manager
("System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager") to search for BOINC
and to install the boinc-client package.

It is a feature that both are seperated in Debian/Ubuntu. Think of servers

And that means that the project does not support graphics output under Linux

If ionice fails does this always means that "ioprio_set" is not allowed? If
the answer to this question is no, I would rather suggest to echo a more
generic message like "ionice failed," or something similar.

If you want to, you can commit this into boinc's trunk.

Actually it should be fairly easy to backport the "fix" for this bug to the
5.10 branch. Only these two commits that affect client/hostinfo_unix.C need
to be backported:

Note that the "fix" does not detect activity if the keyboard or mouse is

know or add your infos to http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/ticket/463.

Upstream reverted the requirement on wxWidgets 2.8 before releasing 5.9.12
IIRC. Hence it is possible to have 5.10 in Debian and Ubuntu soon. In fact
I'm currently running the 5.10.4 BOINC client, which I built a few hours ago,

I'll upload it to unstable (or better: before I'll ask Christoph to upload it

Not really, I just care about the state of the BOINC packages in Debian _and_
Ubuntu.

BOINC uses port 31416, so you should not restrict access to this port for
localhost and you should make sure that you used localhost as host in
KBoincSpy's "Add Location" dialog. (I assume boinc-client and kboincspy are
installed on the same host.)

Sorry, but a backport to Dapper is not possible, because it hasn't all
required build dependencies. boinc_5.8.17-1 build-depends on
libcurl3-openssl-dev (>= 7.15.5) but Dapper only has 7.15.1-1ubuntu2. If you

This normally means that the project to which the selected task belongs to
does not support graphics. So it's not a bug in the BOINC Manager if the
button is grayed out.

This will "make" graphics work, only if the "Show graphics" button was not
