[Bug 415549] [NEW] [Karmic] gnome-panel forgets configuration on logout

2009-08-18 Thread Eric Hickman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If i set the gnome-panel configuration to be transparent, it resets to
default after i logout and log back in or after a reboot.

1)right-clicking on gnome-panel,
2)Select properties from the dropdown menu
3)click on the background tab
4)select "solid color"
5)move the slider to the left for transparent
6)close the window, gnome-panel should now be correctly transparent
7)logout or reboot
8)login
9)watch gnome-panel use the default settings.

I expect gnome-panel to remember the settings i used last and load them
upon login

[Bug 413707] Re: [Karmic] Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module

2009-08-18 Thread Eric Hickman
I dont belive this bug belongs to xserver-xorg-video-nv as the problem
seems to be that the proprietary nvidia kernel module isnt being
loaded...? see the Xorg.1.log

xorg.conf shows the nv driver, i Belive because that was the driver that
was in use when i used ubuntu-bug, I know its confusing, I can attempt
to refile the bug if its needed.

[Bug 413707] Re: [Karmic] Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module

2009-08-19 Thread Eric Hickman
In this bug. i reported it after rebooting using a different xorg.conf
and then stuck on the the old xorg.0.log. So it may be a bit confusing
iv refiled the bug as bug 415718 I reported that bug from shell using
ubuntu-bug cli so its fresher from the very environment the bug occurred
in. so Im invalidating this bug.

[Bug 413707] [NEW] [Karmic] Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module

2009-08-14 Thread Eric Hickman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Just did a fresh install of Karmic alpha 4 fully updated, selected to
load the restricted drivers for my nvidia card. It "searched and
downloaded" them however the green light in the gui menu that shows the
drivers are active did not light up. I shrugged it off and rebooted.
Ubuntu fell to a shell login apon reboot. I changed xorg.conf to the nv
driver and rebooted and everything came up fine. Sorry in advance if
this bug should be set against another package.

Since i rebooted i added the xorg log corresponding with the problem as
well not sure if ubuntu-bug would pull it in.

[Bug 413725] [NEW] [Karmic] automating the mounting of disks: requiring password right after login is annoying

2009-08-14 Thread Eric Hickman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devicekit-disks

Ubuntu 9.10 alpha 4 completely updated

I don't know if automating the mount of internal drives is a good or bad thing.
In my use case i don't mind it. However I find it annoying how right after i
enter my password to log into Ubuntu I am faced with a another request to type
in my password to mount an internal filesystem. If internal drives are supposed
to be mounted on login shouldn't they be rolled into the login password in some
way?

Screen shot of what i'm talking about is added below

[Bug 413908] [NEW] [Karmic] [usability bug] empathy does not maximize from notification icon where you expect it to maximize

2009-08-14 Thread Eric Hickman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

If Empathy is open and on the right side of the screen, and you click on
the green status circle notification icon, empathy will minimize to the
tray, this is correct behavior, however apon clicking on the green
circle notification icon again empathy maximizes on the right side of
the desktop. To reproduce:

1) I start Empathy
2)move Empathy to right side
3) Click green circle notification "watch empathy disappear"
4)click green circle notification again "watch empathy reappear on the opposite
side of the desktop from where it was, to where i didn't expect it."

I expect windows when minimized to tray to maximize back to their
original positions from which i minimized them.

What actually happened, empathy maximizes to a different location than
where i first minimized it.

3 screen shots,
1st) Empathy is just running on right side of screen
2nd) After the first click of green icon notification, empathy disappear to the
notification icon as expected
3rd) After the second click of the green icon notification, empathy reappears
on left side of desktop.

Only works if you click on the green circle notification icon, at the top left.
Minimize from the minimize button attached to the window works normally

[Bug 567027] Re: Computer Janitor hangs while analyzing system

2010-04-21 Thread Eric Hickman
It will hang every time if i select computer janitor from the menu item
(System-> Administration -> Computer Janitor). If i run the computer
janitor gtk from terminal,(sudo computer-janitor-gtk) it will also hang
most of the time. (every time but one). But if I run computer-janitor in
terminal (sudo computer-janitor find) It runs no problem. I did a manual
removal of deb:linux-headers-2.6.32-19 and now the gtk gives me no
problem.

I also removed other cruft with the computer-janitor but the gtk didn't
stop hanging until i removed the linux-headers-2.6.32-19

[Bug 576205] Re: CD integrity check passes on one system fails on another

2010-05-06 Thread Eric Hickman
OK so the md5sum on ubuntuhashes
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes) for the alternate amd
64 is a54366aa72d6b576ee8fc0215f8a13b9. As mentioned above the ISO that
I have downloaded matches this. So the ISO is fine. Then I burned the
ISO to a CD, this CD has failed the integrity check supplied on the CD
repeatedly (5times) when done on my laptop, while passing the integrity
check on my dads computer 3 times. Next I have made an image of the
burned CD. The md5sum of this image matches the md5sum of the original
ISO and the md5sum from ubunuhashes. I also made a second image of of
the burned ISO and the md5sum of this also matches the others. So let me
summarize what I think I have.

The ISO i got off the web is good.
The burned CD I have is good, yet it fails The integrity test in my laptop,
while passing The integrity check in my dads computer.
This would make me think that I have a hardware problem, except that the two
images made from the burned CD made on the laptop are exactly the same as the
original ISO according to md5sum, I would think that if my CD-ROM drive had a
hardware issue it would not be able to make an image of the original burned ISO
perfectly, twice, while failing the integrity check every time or write the
original ISO to a CD correctly in the first place.

Assuming that my test proves I don't have a hardware issue, I am left
with the conclusion that the integrity test supplied on the CD is broken
throwing false positives. I can't explain why it only seems to do so on
my laptop.

Bottom line. I have a CD that as far as I can tell is perfectly fine.
Hardware that as far as i can tell is perfectly fine. And I am unable to
install Ubuntu. Not only will the integrity check fail, But if i try to
install anyway, the install fails.

[Bug 576205] [NEW] CD integrity check passes on one system fails on another

2010-05-05 Thread Eric Hickman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 from alternate CD 64bit. My md5sum hash
is good on the iso as a whole. The integrity test failed 3 times (100%
of the times i have tried) when checking it in my laptop, but it passed
twice (100% of the times iv tried) when checking it on another computer.

Of the times that it failed, it failed at different places during the
integrity check.

I know i need to test more to rule out hardware. Are there any tools
available to test CD DRIVE integrity or a boot option that will force
the integrity check at a slower speed? Or a boot option that will
install at a slower speed?

Md5sum output.

[Bug 509866] Re: [lucid] empathy window resizes while typing in IRC

2010-01-19 Thread Eric Hickman
Teej :
Do you mean:

you expect a scroll bar to be introduced into the input box when a
sentence is longer than the input box? With all window panes staying the
same size.

However what really happens is that the input box grows vertically to
fit the space and the chat window pane shrinks vertically

and so the bug is that the input box grows instead of using a scrollbar?

[Bug 514158] Re: master ALSA volume slider does not affect actual volume

2010-02-01 Thread Eric Hickman
I think you may be correct about it being an ALSA Driver bug.

The information from http://pulseaudio.org/wiki/PulseAudioStoleMyVolumes
gives more detail on the situation,

in summary:

"PulseAudio depends on the correctness of the dB information the ALSA
drivers export If you are experiencing distortions/clipping even
though the inner volumes are set to 0dB, then this means that the dB
information your ALSA driver exports is simply incorrect. In this case
please file a bug against your audio driver and ask them to correct
(i.e. shift up) the volume scale of that volume control."

Go ahead and read that article, and see what you think.

Assuming it is an alsa-driver i believe the proper command for debug
info is "apport-collect -p alsa-base" in a terminal.

you should try Ctrl + Alt + F1, this will allow you to log into a
terminal. to get my system back i would then type "top" which will
display the most resource abusive programs, normally the culprit of a
freeze like this. You can then press "k" and then the PID number
corresponding to the application that is hanging the system. This will
kill that application. You can then press Ctrl + Alt + F7 to get back to
your first Desktop view.

at the very least once you login you can restart the computer in a more
controlled way. "sudo reboot"

Once you know the application that is freezing up the system we can file
a bug for it.

[Bug 576731] Re: Gnome-do fails to open Home folder

2010-05-15 Thread Eric Hickman
I can confirm this. I have the same thing happening to me.
gnome-do 0.8.3.1
Ubuntu 10.04 64bit.

And starting gnome-do from terminal or menu opens the home folder but if
gnome-do is auto started it fails to open home folder.

[Bug 576731] Re: Gnome-do fails to open Home folder

2010-05-16 Thread Eric Hickman
I did some work, made a python script to run gnome-do from startup
applications in debug mode and capture the output. I will post the
script, and the two output files I obtained.

First, gnome-do-output-autostart, is the debug output from starting
gnome-do from the python script auto-started.

Second, gnome-do-output-terminal, is the debug output from starting
gnome-do from the terminal "gnome-do --debug >> gnome-do-output-
terminal"

In both the auto-started output and terminal started output no reference
to opening the home folder is present, even though there are reference
to opening the Music folder and the enhickman folder (myuser's
homefolder).

Which brings me to my second point,
When auto-starting: I can not open the home folder through the home folder
dialog (typing 'home' then 'ENTER') But I can open the home folder by
explicitly choosing the enhickman folder (typing 'enhi' then 'ENTER')

When starting from the terminal: I can open the user home folder both
ways that is (typing 'home' then pressing 'ENTER' or typing 'enhi' then
pressing 'ENTER')

So gnome-do can open the home folder from autostart just not from the
'Home Folder' menu item.

lastly to understand the gnome-do output files it should be known that in both
I did 3 things in this order
1: Open music folder (typing 'music' then pressing 'ENTER')
2: Open home folder (typing 'home' then pressing 'ENTER')
3: Open home folder (typing 'enhi' then pressing 'ENTER')

As stated before there is no mention of opening anything in either
output file during the time that I attempted to open the home folder as
in (2: from above) even though the Home Folder menu item is successfully
opened when gnome-do is started from terminal and Home Folder menu item
fails to open when gnome-do is auto-started.

[Bug 576205] Re: CD integrity check passes on one system fails on another

2010-05-10 Thread Eric Hickman
I have now switched to a different brand of CD to burn images on and the
problems have gone away so for now im marking as incomplete. I was using
LG 700MB CD-R CDs. Now I will be using Samsung 700MB CD-R CDs (CD-R
80DA). If you are having problems similar to what I was experiencing i
would suggest trying a different brand of CDs. I don't know how changing
the brand would effect anything but I can't explain it any other way.
Perhaps for some reason my hardware hates LG.

[Bug 514158] Re: master ALSA volume slider does not affect actual volume

2010-01-29 Thread Eric Hickman
I think this may be a pulse audio bug, try a workaround at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems/KarmicCaveats. About half
way down there is a section called "Volume range anomalies", if the
information there sounds like what you are experiencing and you can fix
it with the workaround they describe, i'd be pretty sure its PulseAudio.
In that case please type "apport-collect -p PulseAudio" into a terminal
to attach relevant debug information.

[Bug 506784] Re: ubuntu 9.10 shutting down by itself

2010-01-15 Thread Eric Hickman
It could be a hardware failure on your computer. Perhaps the power
supply going bad etc.

1) Have you used previous versions of Ubuntu successfully?

2) Does it shut down every time you use it?

3) How long after logging in does it shutdown?

To test if it is a hardware issue please use the Ubuntu Live CD choosing
"try Ubuntu..." and browse the web like you normally do.

4) Does the problem still occur when using the Live CD?

If you have used a previous version of Ubuntu 9.04 or earlier
successfully on your computer, you could install that version along
beside your current install of Ubuntu 9.10. After logging into the older
version test the system by browsing the web.

5) Does the problem still occur when using a previous version of Ubuntu
(Ubuntu 9.04 or earlier)?

If the problem occurs when using the Ubuntu Live CD and a previous
version of Ubuntu then your computer hardware is faulty.

If the problem does not occur when testing with the Live CD or a
previous version of Ubuntu then it may be a new bug in Ubuntu 9.10.

Thank you for your cooperation in answering the above questions.

2010-01-15 Thread Eric Hickman
Since the bug only happens when the appearance setting is "Normal" or
"Extra" I think the bug is in compiz which replaces the default window
manager when "Normal" or "Extra" is chosen from the appearance setting.

To give compiz developers all relevant information please type "apport-
collect 507241" in a terminal.

This will use apport, a bug reporting tool to collect information about
your system needed to fix your bug and add that information to this bug-
report. More information about using apport can be found at
