[Bug 23332] Re: impossible to create openoffice files in nautilus

2008-08-23 Thread Matthew East
I'm going to reopen this bug to try out an idea - can a "~/Templates"
directory be populated for all users in the same way that the ~/Examples
folder is shipped? It would be really useful for Ubuntu to ship a few
useful templates by default.

Nautilus still includes the "Create Document" feature, which is empty by
default in Ubuntu, so it's actually confusing not to ship some
templates.

[Bug 304521] Re: "Prefer some human contact" seems dubiously worded

2008-12-05 Thread Matthew East
Richard: the original report is fairly clear - John refers to the
browser startpage, which is shipped in ubuntu-docs. It's the page which
shows up in firefox if you load it up without a net connection.

However, I don't see this as a bug. You have to look pretty hard to see
innuendo in the wording, and no one has complained about this before for
the 4 or 5 releases that we've had this wording. That said, I expect a
thorough reworking of the offline startpage for Jaunty, so I think this
wording will disappear. For a combination of those two reasons I'm
closing the bug.

[Bug 255368] Re: ebox: Depends: libapache-authcookie-perl but it is not installable

2008-12-05 Thread Matthew East
The task on ubuntu-docs is invalid, this isn't a problem with the
documentation as the package should be installable. When the package is
fixed, the documentation will work as intended.

I've accidentally declined this bug for intrepid on ebox as I didn't
realise that declining it on the ubuntu-docs task would decline it on
all tasks... Launchpad's UI is rather misleading there.

Sure it's relevant. It's possible to activate the control-center using
the menu editor, even if it doesn't show by default, and it's possible
that it will show by default in the future (I'm still hoping...). The
upstream bug is still open so it's worth keeping this open, I think.

[Bug 297660] Re: www.ubuntu.com has horizontal scroll bar

2008-11-13 Thread Matthew East
Hi,

The bug tracker is the appropriate place to report bugs about the
website. However, I don't think this is a bug. The website is 888 pixels
wide, which is perfectly standard and should not result in horizontal
scrolling on any screen with a basic resolution such as 1024x768. It
certainly doesn't on my machine.

Many other websites are considerably wider. For example,
http://www.bbc.co.uk/, which looks like it is 974 pixels wide.

In the case of your screenshot, it seems that you are using dual
screens, each of which is extremely narrow. Perhaps you could clarify
the setup.

For the above reasons I'm closing the bug. If your real objection is
that the website has a fixed width, then that is something which has
been discussed a fair amount in the past and was a conscious choice by
the webdesigners. Reopening that discussion is possible, but you should
certainly use the ubuntu-website list for that.

[Bug 210771] Re: School advocacy wrongly speaks about Scribus being Illustrator-like

2009-05-30 Thread Matthew East
Ben,

Thank for the patch.

I think you should also add the last sentence suggested by Timo, to
mention Inkscape as well. Timo has also suggested fixing the typo in
"capabilities", perhaps you could include that too.

We don't really need a changelog entry for documentation, because we
tend to collect a few fixes together and upload them with a single
changelog entry. But if you want to do a changelog entry for practice,
it should be for karmic (we won't fix this bug in Jaunty). You should
also try and be more descriptive in the changelog entry, so describe
very briefly what change the upload fixes. The correct format to use for
citing the Launchpad bug is "LP: #210771" because that will
automatically close the bug when the package is uploaded.

This is not an ubuntu-website bug, I'm changing the task to an Ubuntu

Thanks for the bug report, I've pushed a fix for this to our karmic

patch against the file on the system (/usr/share/gnome/help/internet/C

against the file in the source package or (best of all) the appropriate
bzr branch. Anyway, it was an easy fix so thanks for noticing and

[Bug 357369] Re: Typing error in version numbers

2009-04-20 Thread Matthew East
That change constitutes a string change. It's *very* unorthodox to do
such a string change just a few days before final release, in particular
without giving the translators a change to see and translate the new
string.

I suppose that if translations are not going to be shipped with xubuntu-
docs for Jaunty then the translators could be notified of the change
after the release and translations could then be updated; but it's still
very odd to make a change like this in the release week.

But that doesn't matter, because the fact that the English string has
changed will mean that this string will make all translations of this
string appear in English, regardless of whether the previous string
was translated or not.

That's why we have a string freeze...

I understand, but after the string freeze, a system needs to take
place to permit translators to supply translations of the amended
string. There may always be serious bugs that require fixing, but
there isn't time for the fix to be translated, and therefore the fix
should only be done as part of a StableReleaseUpdate after the
release, giving time for translation as part of that process.

This is all irrelevant if xubuntu-docs will not ship with
translations, of course.

If translations are intended to be released with xubuntu-docs, the
proper process should be followed and the change should be reverted.
If not, and the release managers for Xubuntu are happy to let in a
string change 3 days before the release, then I'm certainly not going
to stand in the way of that.

However in the future I'd really like to see xubuntu-docs following
the same procedures as ubuntu-docs and kubuntu-docs, even though the
package is not in the main repository. We may need to work on
documentation for the procedure.

In that case, no need to revert the change. We can send the new string
to Launchpad for translation, and update the translations from
Launchpad before doing te SRU.

I'll help with getting the package ready for translations after the
release.

Whether you want to push a new version of xubuntu-docs with this
change prior to release is a question for the release team, I suppose.

Thanks for the report. Did you see a page which linked to the broken

[Bug 371773] Re: broken iso link on https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/jeos-initial-setup.html

2009-05-09 Thread Matthew East
I was thinking about whether we should be using a variable like this a
bit more, and I've had a chat with some of the developers about this.
I'm pasting below a snipped version of the log.

The conclusion that was come to is that we should avoid using the point
release variable in the documentation. In general, we should use 8.04
for the release, and we should seek to avoid using a string with a point
release in it where possible.

The problem with using the point release variable is that each time a
point release is issued, we would have to issue an updated package with
the variable amended, and to fix all the translations that referred to
the previous string (because translations don't use the variable in the
same way as the English version).

On that basis, I think the best fix to this bug is to remove the
hardcoded url, and use something like this:

"Download the JeOS iso file from the http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/jeos/releases/&distro-rev;/release/";>JeOS
download page."

(That folder will always redirects to the appropriate point release).

10:37:44 < mdke> When a point release is issued, does the proper name for a
particular release include the point version? So is hardy called 8.04.2 or 8.04?
10:38:12 < mdke> the latter still, right?
10:38:39 < infinity> mdke: Depends on which proper name you're looking at.
10:39:03 < infinity> mdke: Check "lsb_release -a" on a hardy system, for
instance.
10:39:11 < infinity> Description:Ubuntu 8.04.2
10:39:11 < infinity> Release:8.04
10:39:25 < infinity> mdke: The former is the official name/version, which
includes the .2
10:39:41 < infinity> mdke: But the release version doesn't increment for the
sake of sanity of any tools that might check against that number.
10:40:09 < Amaranth> 8.04.2 sounds like it should have been released 2 April
2008 :P
10:40:20 < mdke> I see that http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download uses 8.04
10:40:40 < mdke> what I'm looking at is whether, and if so when, in the
documentation we should update version numbers
10:41:01 < infinity> mdke: In the docs? Never, IMO.
10:41:09 < mdke> in some cases it's essential, because links to isos are broken
(the iso has .2 in the name)
10:41:19 < infinity> mdke: Any links to download stuff end up symlinked with
8.04->8.04.$current anyway.
10:41:41 < mdke>
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/jeos/releases/8.04/release/ubuntu-8.04-jeos-i386.iso
doesn't
10:41:44 < infinity> mdke: And do docs actually link directly to ISOs, rather
than pages listing said ISOs?
10:42:14 < mdke> in one place, I think, bug 371773
10:42:16 < ubottu> Launchpad bug 371773 in ubuntu-docs "broken iso link on
https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverguide/C/jeos-initial-setup.html";
[Medium,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/371773
10:43:07 < cjwatson> the directory is symlinked but the ISO basename isn't
10:43:14 < infinity> mdke: Yeah, I'd call that a bug in the way the docs are
written, IMO...
10:43:29 < mdke> perhaps linking to the directory is a better solution, even if
it requires the user to do a bit more work
10:43:59 < cjwatson> anyway, in general I think of 8.04 as the "series" and
8.04.2 as identifying a specific point
10:44:00 < mdke> doing a SRU for the serverguide each time a point release is
released is a bit of a pain, especially because it requires translators to redo
that particular string too
10:45:03 < mdke> or at least running sed over the translations
10:45:55 < mdke> infinity: so you'd recommend simply pointing to the directory
and telling the user to wget the relevant file from the directory?
10:46:52 < infinity> mdke: As much as that's less hand-holdy, I'm seriously
failing to see how someone who's expected to understand a CLI-based server with
almost nothing installed (JeOS is very minimal) wouldn't be able to sort out an
http directory listing.
10:47:14 < mdke> yes, I don't think there is a risk that someone could get that
wrong
10:47:22 < infinity> Oh, there's always a risk.
10:47:29 < mdke> heh
10:47:38 < infinity> But, I'm in the "let them keep both halves" camp when it's
not a desktop/simple use case.
10:48:27 < mdke> ok. And it seems clear that generally in other cases, 8.04
should be used
10:48:49 < mdke> as the generic name for the distribution
10:49:12 < infinity> I see no reason to document 8.04.2 as a version number
anywhere, except to name images, and in base-files, no.
10:49:19 -!- mok0 [n=...@56344bba.rev.stofanet.dk] has joined #ubuntu-devel
10:49:45 < infinity> It would be about as silly as the Apache section in the
server-guide talking about apache_2.2.8-4ubuntu2, and needing an update on
every security release.
10:50:04 < infinity> (Well, not quite, but you get the absurdity reduction
there, I guess)
10:50:06 < mdke> not quite that silly, surely, but I get the point
10:50:13 < mdke> :)
10:50:39 < mdke> thanks for the assistance

Is there an issue with linking to the latest version if it means that
the other instructions in the JeOS section of the guide might not work

If so, probably the best approach is to link to the same version of JeOS

Thanks Martin. On that basis I've changed "unrestricted" to "free" where

While I was at it, for consistency I've changed some of the internal

[Bug 366098] Re: ubuntu-serverguide has a "DRAFT" watermark

2009-04-24 Thread Matthew East
This bug should be fixed in Jaunty, I think.

Here is my SRU application:

1. The bug makes the document look unprofessional and gives users the wrong
impression that it is not complete or reviewed.
2. The bug hasn't been addressed in our karmic branch, because that branch
*will* be for drafting purposes until string freeze in the karmic cycle. But we
should remember to change it!
3. Patch attached.
4. Bug is 100% reproducible by opening the file

5. Patch has absolutely no regression potential that I can think of.

I've targeted the bug to Jaunty. I've thought about whether we should
combine this fix with other fixes which may arise for Jaunty. But on
reflection I think we should just go ahead and fix it now. Other fixes
that we may do in the future are likely to take longer because they may
involve re-translation of strings, whereas this one is a straightforward
build file fix.
