[Bug 223065] Re: Typing a file extension when saving should results in double extension (eg .doc.odt)

2008-07-03 Thread DrSpirograph
I hadn't noticed that so I guess it is a bit more complicated.

But still, for it to just chuck on a .odt extension and save it in
OpenOffice format is not the best response to the situation.

It could ask me which .doc format I wanted, or it could at least warn me
that I seem to have typed an extension that doesn't match with the
selected file format.

[Bug 243404] [NEW] Restart Required dialog doesn't say what the Yes/No buttons do

2008-06-26 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-notifier

Hi,
I'm running Kubuntu 8.04.
When I complete an update that requires a reboot, I see the little icon.
I click on it, and I get a dialog that says

"In order to complete the update your system needs to be restarted."
and then it has a Yes No button.
Now I assume that Yes means, "yes reboot my system now", and No, means I'll
reboot later, but it doesn't actually tell me that - from just reading the
dialog I don't really know what it means.

Perhaps the dialog should have a second sentence:
"Do you want to restart your system now?"

(Also the title of the dialog doesn't seem correct - "Restart Require",
surely correct grammar would be Restart Required.)

Cheers,
Chris

[Bug 139812] Re: knetworkmanager can't acquire dhcp address on wep network

2008-05-23 Thread DrSpirograph
I can confirm this with a Broadcom adapter in Hardy:
# cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 8.04 \n \l

# lspci | grep Wireless
06:06.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g]
802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

Because of the difficulty in getting this card to work in previous
releases, I (and by the looks of the forums many others) take this to
mean that the wireless driver is not working - took me sometime to hone
in on the real cause and how easy it was to fix.

So if this can't be fixed immediately, maybe the Hardwares Drivers
Manager could display a notice about this bug or something so people
know how to work around?

[Bug 55039] Compaq Presario M2000 Card Reader doesn't work after hibernate

2006-08-03 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

I'm running Kubuntu Dapper.
After booting, if I put an SD card into the flash slot on the laptop, the media
is detected (the light near it flashes) and I'm asked by the KDE Media popup if
I want to mount it. If I do mount it, I can read it fine.
After hibernating and powering back on, inserting media into the slot no longer
works - the light does not flash, dmesg reveals no messages in response to the
flash card being inserted, and the popup does not appear.

I've found that I can correct the problem by doing the follow after I return
from a hibernate:
sudo rmmod sdhci
sudo rmmod mmc_core
sudo modprobe sdhci

After reloading those modules, plugging in the flash card again results
in the popup prompting for a mount and the mount works and I can read
photos again.

To recreate:
1. Boot up the laptop
2. Hibernate
3. Power on and wait for the laptop to return from hibernate
4. Plug in the flash memory to the memory slot

Result:
Nothing happens - the flash card does not appear to be detected.

Expected Result:
KDE Popup asking me if I want to open the card in a new window.

To fix:
After the laptop returns from hibernate, run the following:
sudo rmmod sdhci
sudo rmmod mmc_core
sudo modprobe sdhci

I think the following information from lspci relates to the controller for this
card reader:

[Bug 54092] bcm43xx hangs after hibernate

2006-07-25 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

I've got a Compaq Presario M2000 with a BCM43xx wireless card. I've got the
card working with wpa_supplicant, however, if I hibernate the computer, when I
return from hibernation, the wireless connection does not return.
If I run /etc/init.d/networking restart, it hangs the laptop
If I kill wpa_supplicant and restart it manually, it hangs the laptop.
If I kill wpa_supplicant, unload bcm43xx and reload bcm43xx, wpa_supplicant

[Bug 54133] Choosing a locale of Singapore causes GTK problems

2006-07-26 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

During install of Kubuntu Dapper, I set my location to Singapore (by clicking
on it on the map).
This has caused problems with GTK apps - some have simply printed the following
error on starting:
Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C

Other apps actually crash as a result:
When I ran DVD::Rip and selected text in a a text box, the following message
would print on the terminal and DVD::Rip would abruptly exit:
Gdk-ERROR **: file gdkselection.c: line 246 (gdk_string_to_compound_text):
assertion failed: (property.encoding == gdk_atom_intern ("COMPOUND_TEXT",
FALSE) && property.format == 8)

I edited /etc/environment and found it contained the following:

LANGUAGE="en_SG:en"

I changed it to the following
LANG="en_GB.UTF-8"

[Bug 150381] i810 X crashes after suspend after S-video

2007-10-07 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

I have a Compaq Presario M2000 Laptop running Kubuntu 7.04.
If I plug it into the TV using the S-video output play a video (using Xine),
and then return to normal desktop use - the next time I suspend, when it
resumes, the X server crashes, and I find myself back at the terminal login
screen for TTY1.
If I do Ctrl-Alt-F7 then I get the X login screen.

Suspend usually works fine.

To reproduce
1) Login to Kubuntu
2) Plug S-Video cable into TV or similar.
3) Use + to switch video output to the TV
4) Play a video using Xine (using Xv driver)
5) Unplug S-Video
6) Use + to get desktop back on LCD.
7) Suspend to RAM

[Bug 151277] KDE Volume hotkeys disrupt balance setting

2007-10-10 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

I have a Compaq Presario M2000 with separate volume up/down/mute keys.
I'm running Kubuntu 7.04
If I open KMixer and change the master balance, and then use the volume up/down
key - it seems to take the volume from the left channel and assign it to the
right channel - upsetting the balance.

To reproduce, it's easiest to observe with alsamixer open in a konsole, as it
interactively shows volume changes from other sources.
1) Open alsamixer
2) Click on the speaker icon and bring up the mixer.
3) Change the balance to all the way to the right
(you will see in alsamixer that the left channel goes down to 0, while right
remains at the same volume)
4) Press the volume up key.
(you will see the left volume increases, but the right volume is dropped to the
same level as the left channel)

[Bug 223065] [NEW] Typing a file extension when saving should results in double extension (eg .doc.odt)

2008-04-27 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Description:Ubuntu 7.04
Release:7.04

I am using OpenOffice under Kubuntu, so it is using the KDE file save
dialog (if that's relevant)

I usually save my OpenOffice documents in the native odt/ods format, but
occasionally I will need to create one that's in doc/xls format.

When I save, I usually just type the filename and hit enter, so for
other formats I'd usually just hit +, type in my filename
including extension and hit enter.

Of course, later, I come back and discover that my file is actually
still in OpenOffice format and has been saved as .doc.odt (or .xls.ods)

It seems to me that it would be more intuitive if OpenOffice would
recognise that I've typed an extension for an alternative file format it
can save as, and save as that file format.

To reproduce:
(this assumes that your install of openoffice defaults to saving in the
OpenDocument format)
1. Create a new document.
2. Press + (to get the save dialog)
3. Type "mydocument.doc" and press enter.

What happens:
Your document is saved as OpenDocument Text format as "mydocument.doc.odt"

What should happen:
The document should be saved as a Microsoft Word document, named
"mydocument.doc"

(obviously this is a wishlist bug)

[Bug 127149] Can't prevent guidance from starting on login

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-guidance

I've replaced guidance with kpowersave, but now I get both of them starting
when I login to my session.
I've tried looking for an option in the guidance configuration screen.
I've looked in .kde/share/config/session to ensure there's no session for it.
I've looked in .kde/Autostart
I've put guidance-power-manager in Applications to be excluded from sessions in
the Session Manager configuration.
I've looked in Service Manager settings to see if it's there and can be
disabled.

None of these have worked.
This is way to hard to stop a system tray applet from starting - ideal would be
a question when I quit, do I want to start guidance next time I login.

[Bug 130476] k3b ignores image file directory in burn dialog

2007-08-05 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: k3b

If I try to burn an audio CD with K3B, changing the image file location in the
burn directory seems to have no effect.
To reproduce:
1) Create an audio CD project
2) Add some tracks
3) Click on burn
4) In the writing tab, check "Create image"
5) In the image tab, change the directory
(a good giveaway is that it doesn't even prompt you if the directory doesn't
exist)
6) Click on burn

As the image is generated you will notice the files appear in the old
location, not in the new one that was entered.

To workaround I had to go to K3B Settings and change it the value there.

Don't know if it makes a difference, but when I discovered this, it was

[Bug 68021] Re: high pitching noise on microphone 82801G

2007-01-03 Thread DrSpirograph
I'm running Kubuntu 6.10 and am seeing the same problem. The system is
up to date, so it should have the header and restricted modules update
mentioned above, but still I'm seeing the same problem.

There's some more discussion of the problem here:
http://audacityteam.org/forum/thread/3131

I have tried using aoss (from the alsa-oss package) and that provides a work
around for me in audacity if I run audacity using:
aoss audacity

I've also tried recording using Skype and I get the problem, even though Skype
claims to be using alsa, the problem also exists with arecord if I use
 arecord -f cd

but if I just do plain
 arecord
(which records Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono) then I don't hear the buzz.

[Bug 66477] Re: hal (through guidance-power-manager) considers laptop lid always closed

2007-01-03 Thread DrSpirograph
I have a Compaq Presario M2000 (same model?) and have seen the same in
both Dapper and Edgy. In Edgy I'm getting that message everytime I
logged in, in Dapper when I had it configured to hibernate on lid down
it would hibernate as soon as I logged in. After that though, it seemed
to detect lid events correctly.

ie, after I restored from the erronious hibernate, the next time I shut
the lid, it would hibernate.

[Bug 75905] tifm flash reader doesn't work after suspend

2006-12-15 Thread DrSpirograph
Public bug reported:

After I put my laptop into suspend and return, the flash card reader no
longer works. When I insert a flash card into it, the reader does not
flash it's access light, and there is nothing added to dmesg output to
indicate that the card was detected.

I had a similar problem in Dapper, which I was able to solve by rmmod'ing the
mmc_core module and then modprobe'ing it.
I tried doing that with all the related modules I could find, but it didn't
help.
I have to reboot to restore the reader to working.

The reader is a Texas Instruments 5-in-1. I'm on a Compaq Presario M2000
Laptop, running Kubuntu Edgy Eft (6.10).
"dmesg | grep -i flash" gives:
06:09.3 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments PCIxx21 Integrated
FlashMedia Controller
