I also have this problem. Or pretty close. It never starts.
I'm running ubuntu 8.04 but with an older kernel (2.6.15-27) that's compatible
with VMware workstation 5.
I've removed my .mozilla folder and un-installed everything firefox related.
Running under strace, it stops with:
setsockopt(49, SOL_SOCKET, SO_REUSEADDR, [1], 4) = 0
connect(49, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/tmp/.esd-1000/socket"}, 23
I'm guessing there is something sound-related that's killing it.

One more issue... when you install openntpd (replacing ntpd) it leaves behind a /etc/init.d/ntpd file. xterm can't change it's title any more. Did this fixing this "bug" break this important feature? The screen program is one example of an application where changing the title critical. Title changes still work with gnome. Only broken with kde.
