[Bug 301297] [NEW] Brasero fails to copy audio CD due to "Invalid CD-TEXT item for a track"

2008-11-23 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

Attempt to copy an audio CD by creating cdrdao image (with brasero.toc file),
but trying to burn the image produces the error:
"BraseroCdrdao stderr: ERROR: /home/david/brasero.toc:26: Invalid CD-TEXT item

Attaching full session log, and brasero.toc...

[Bug 124387] Re: update manager lock file not always removed

2009-06-25 Thread Dave-B
@Teej: My latest case didn't involve two UM windows, but I think it may
have on previous occasions.

Either way, the bug is that the lock is not removed, which seems to me
like a more low-level Apt problem. Unfortunately I don't know enough
about Apt to identify a better package.

[Bug 124387] Re: update manager lock file not always removed

2009-06-13 Thread Dave-B
I've had this maybe 5 times as well, I'll need to get back to you about
the exact text of the message, but here's what happened last time:

1. Update manager announced that there are updates.
2. I had a quick look at what they are, then hit "Install updates".
3. I entered my password in the gksu dialog that appears.
4. A message is shown saying that it couldn't get
'/var/cache/apt/archives/lock', (it might also say there's another other
package manager running, but I'm not 100% certain about that).
5. I opened a terminal and ls/ greped for the file, seeing that it belongs to
root:root, and has date of approx 5 days ago.
6. I deleted the lock and re-ran update manager.
7. Update manager install some updates (possibly just security updates), then
has the same problem (i.e. GOTO 5, except for the date).
8. Updates were installed.
9. Checking for the lock file again after all updates were installed (and
update-manager appear to exit ok), the lock was back.

2009-06-13 Thread Dave-B
I also meant to say that this is on 9.04.

I just ran `gksu synaptic` to install a program (fslint), which
installed, and synaptic closed with no messages in the terminal, which
is good. Unfortunately, the lock file has returned.

>From this we can say that it's a problem for both update-manager and
synaptic - probably via some shared backend.

I'll update with exact message details when I next have updates to
install.

Just encountered it again. UM had notified that Thunderbird updates were
available, but I decided I didn't want Thunderbird anymore. I closed UM
and started Synaptic, found Thunderbird and marked it for removal, hit
apply, and was told the lock file was there.

My system is fully up to date, including update-manager 1:0.111.9.

Any other information that would be useful?..

[Bug 341233] [NEW] x flickers on eeepc when plugging power supply, and with some apps

2009-03-11 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

EeePC fully up to date with Jaunty as of 4pm GMT.

When connecting and disconnecting the mains power adapter, and when
loading Totem (and probably other apps), the screen flickers, with
rectangles of windows being flashed up on the wrong part of the screen.
This can be just about seen in this video, after the clunk noises of me
un/plugging the power: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWZGJpAUpM0

xvidcap couldn't capture the flicker.

I'm guessing this is GEM related, so package = xserver-xorg-video-intel.

[Bug 238513] Re: slow network in hardy (b44)

2008-07-08 Thread Dave-B
Never mind.
After trying several kernels (including booting from a live CD) - all with the
same slow speed, I came to the conclusion that it must be a hardware problem.

It turns out that the network cable has been damaged (by people walking
on it) - I changed the cable and speed went back to normal.

[Bug 238513] [NEW] slow network in hardy (b44)

2008-06-09 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Hi,

After upgrading to Hardy, by desktop PC with a wired network connection has had
a much slower connection speed - often no better than 5KiB/s. eth0 seems to be
getting lots of errors and dropped packets.
NB, with this system, I have to boot noapic, otherwise the net connection often
doesn't work at all.

My laptop continues to have decent connection speed through the same
ADSL modem/router (wirelessly).

Some debug info:
$ ping -c 100 192.168.1.1

100 packets transmitted, 91 received, 9% packet loss, time 99041ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.603/0.689/0.747/0.043 ms

[Bug 336674] [NEW] No network after putting Jaunty on EeePC 900

2009-03-02 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

I upgraded my EeePC 900 from Easy Peasy to Jaunty yesterday and now it
can't get wired or wireless network connection.

The modules appear to be loading and the hardware working - both atl2 and ath5k
are present in lsmod.
NetworkManager can see my wireless network, but fails to connect to it. I get
notifications of failing to connect with wired network, and dmesg shows the

[Bug 336674] Re: No network after putting Jaunty on EeePC 900

2009-03-04 Thread Dave-B
The bug was fixed by downloading and installing the package linux-
image-2.6.28-8-generic (and dependencies).

I think that the problem was, in upgrading from Easy Peasy to a Jaunty
Alpha, the kernel was left at Easy Peasy's version - with no Jaunty
kernel installed.

Is this a problem with the upgrade routine?
Should a new bug be raised?

Fair enough if the update works when OOo isn't running - but if that's a
requirement, shouldn't the package system check and warn the user, or
delay installation?

[Bug 279062] Re: evolution-alarm-notify crashed with SIGSEGV in g_str_hash()

2010-04-14 Thread Dave-B
Surely Triaged is the correct status for Ubuntu's Evolution package.

It seems like there's some circular logic happening on this bug status -
it's reported here, but closed at gnome because it's a dupe, the dupe is
a reference to this bug, and this is invalid because there's an upstream
bug. Bleh!

If I encounter the crash again, I'll come back and see If I can tidy it
up - but that's not likely as I've just ended up using Outlook on a
VM...

[Bug 549384] Re: pitivi crashed with ValueError in computeZoomLevel()

2010-04-07 Thread Dave-B
I'm getting this error as well, when I try and move a clip from the
library to the timeline, this is using the clip
http://www.archive.org/download/Sita_Sings_the_Blues/Sita_Sings_the_Blues.ogv
from http://www.archive.org/details/Sita_Sings_the_Blues.

As with other reporters, Apport appeared, but Pitivi was still running.

This is on an old-ish machine, and trying to load the clip onto the
timeline thrashes the CPU, with a load average ~2.3.

[Bug 516051] Re: gst-launch cannot connect to gspca webcam

2010-03-08 Thread Dave-B
Ok, I've set gstreamer-properties video output to "X Window System (No
Xv)" (ximagesink), and the test works, but Cheese still doesn't.

In fact it shows just a single still image, rather than video.

With `cheese --gst-debug-level=2` I get the following warnings:

...and the same warning appears at different frame sizes.

When I change the frame size, I get this critical error:

[Bug 446872] Re: gnome-panel keeps disappearing

2010-03-04 Thread Dave-B
This happens to me as well, most recently when switching from non
composited to composited desktop using gnome-appearance-properties.

already one running.".

Workaround: `nohup gnome-panel &`

[Bug 516051] Re: gst-launch cannot connect to gspca webcam

2010-03-05 Thread Dave-B
Ok, after looking around some more, I find that `gst-launch v4l2src !
ffmpegcolorspace ! xvimagesink` doesn't work because the video chipset
and/or driver doesn't support xvideo.

Running `gst-launch v4l2src ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ximagesink` (i.e.
using ximagesink instead of xvimagesink) shows the webcam as expected.

This suggests to me that it's not a gstreamer problem (as I first
thought), but a pipeline setup problem in the applications (Cheese,
mousetrap) - where do I look to establish how the pipelines are created?

[Bug 516051] Re: gst-launch cannot connect to gspca webcam

2010-03-05 Thread Dave-B
Running `cheese --gst-debug-level=2` gives several warnings starting
with these:

0:00:03.338641523 4010 0x884d430 WARN xvimagesink
xvimagesink.c:1416:gst_xvimagesink_get_xv_support:

xvimagesink.c:1416:gst_xvimagesink_get_xv_support:
 error: No port available

So I haven't got xvimagesink, but cheese/gstreamer is still trying to
use it.

[Bug 521096] [NEW] No video in gnome-mousetrap

2010-02-12 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-mousetrap

There's no video from my webcam (Bus 005 Device 002: ID 046d:092c

tracking seems to happening.

Cheese shows the webcam video as expected.

This is after Mousetrap not working at all due to a dependency on Python

[Bug 522142] [NEW] Unable to configure Cacti database on install (no MySQL root password)

2010-02-15 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cacti

Short version:

The Cacti install should set up the database by prompting the user for
database and database user information, rather than a) requiring them to
research/already know about dbconfig-common, and b) fail to install the
database because of not asking for the MySQL root password.

Long version:

I ran `sudo apt-get install cacti` and the system installed MySQL (with
root password prompt) and other dependencies, but when it gets to
configuring cacti, I get an error "No database user specified.". To
continue, I'm given a choice of:

abort
retry
retry (skip questions)
ignore

Via Google I figure out that I need to set some database connection
information in /etc/dbconfig-common/cacti.conf, so I add values for,
database user, database user password, database name, and database
admin.

I'm puzzled that there's no mention of the database admin password, but
I'll try and carry on. I get no obvious Google hits around ucf, root,
and password.

I re-read /usr/share/doc/cacti/README.Debian.gz, which says
configuration dbconfig-common should be automatic.

Retrying the database installation step, I now get the error:
"ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password:
NO)"

Obviously dbconfig-common is not getting into MySQL without a password,
and is not asking me for the password.

Maybe I'm missing some "commonly known" approach to setting it up, but
there's nothing in the processes telling me how to get the automatic
install to work.

In the end I chose "abort", and created the database manually, as
described in /usr/share/doc/cacti/README.Debian.gz. It took a bit of
fiddling, but it seems to be running now.

delay before the switcher with previews appears.
It seems like more windows to be switched through results in a longer delay.

Without compiz (and no previews) the switcher appears immediately.

On Karmic with 128MB nVidia Corporation NV43GL [Quadro FX 550], using
nVidia driver 185.18.36

[Bug 299330] Re: Alt+Tab - switching applications delay. slow

2009-11-10 Thread Dave-B
FWIW, this essentially makes ALT+TAB with Compiz unusable for me. I have
to take a hand off the keyboard to focus the other window with the mouse
instead.

Possibly related: When typing monitor break kicks in with a break,
there's a delay of 3 seconds between input being frozen and the
countdown appearing (the counter appears saying 2:57).

[Bug 476822] Re: Installs old grub on grub2 karmic systems, breaks update-grub

2010-01-10 Thread dave b.
I had to help a friend re-order their default grub "default". They had
installed a free 9.10 ubuntu. Grub2 was installed. However the grub
(old grub) package was still installed. I installed the dummy package
grub2 which removed the old grub and reinstalled grub-pc.

This bug means that new users cannot use a graphical tool such as
StartUp Manager do not work. Also sudo update-grub *does* not work
either (it will not find /boot/grub/menu.lst).

[Bug 915371] [NEW] Randomly breaks mouse and keyboard input

2012-01-12 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

Occasionally, my X session stops accepting mouse clicks and keyboard presses
(although the mouse cursor will still move)
I can't interact with the PC, and have to power-cycle to continue working.

This only happens when I'm running a LibreOffice program (most recently
calc).

I'm running Xmonad, so it's possible that the problem lies in using them
together.

I temporarily switched to Unity and the same problem occurred, so it's
probably not Xmonad-related.

I know I'm not on the latest Ubuntu version, but wanted to report this
so there's at least this record of it. I'll report back after I upgrade.

[Bug 1175123] [NEW] Media key events duplicated or ignored

2013-05-01 Thread Dave-B
Public bug reported:

I loaded rhythmbox by clicking its name in the sound menu, and press my
multimedia keyboard play/pause button - this works fine and a song
starts playing. Pressing the play/pause button a second time also works
as expected, pausing the track.

However, pressing play/pause a third time doesn't start the song again, but
either:
 1. does nothing, and the whole rhythmbox interface becomes unresponsive,
 2. starts the song again, but starts another song as well - two songs playing
at the same time (or possibly the same song at different positions in the song)
 3. Skips several tracks, before maybe playing one.

Possible relevant segment of `rhythmbox -d` output when play/pause not
restarting song:

[Bug 820375] Re: Lockup when switching video modes

2011-08-24 Thread Dave-B
Installing a mainline build was easier than burning a CD, so I did that
first.

I was unable to reproduce the crash when using:
3.1.0-999-generic #201108231207 SMP Tue Aug 23 13:08:44 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386
GNU/Linux
