[Bug 296304] [NEW] computer hangs accessing a cifs share with kubuntu 8.10

When i try to access to my cifs share (an Apple TimeCapsule connected via wifi) 
with juk (to add the Music/ directory to my collection) or with dolphin to see 
what's in that directory the computer hangs (not only the de or X, everything 
stops working)
I also noticed that navigating in the folder via konsole shows a lot less files 
than what are supposed to be there.
I can access them directly with "cp", "mv", ecc. but can't see them using "ls".

Everything was fine with my previous installation of kubuntu 8.04.1 (on
the same machine)

Nothing is going on! There's no X!
It simply doesn't switch to a console that doesn't exist!

And I don't see what could be necessary to make it complete.
Tell me what's needed and I'll try to provide it.

I'm trying to register a complete kernel log but haven't been very
successful.

today i was able to get the last 9 kernel logs, cut into days.

some could not be related to this issue some others are, i don't know
how to help you more on this regard.

Last operations i did:
-switch to tty1 and give <1> to change loglevel to 1
-give  to show tasks
-shutdown
-notice the usual hang
-give another time 
-give the usual  to shutdown
-reboot
-cat /var/log/kern.log and cut today first session log

in this log the problem should be clearly recognisable (from a person who knows 
what to search)

latest update in intrepid the bug is still present.

here's the full session log, this is everything i can provide...

it's quite frustrating too see no action around this bug, noone seems to
care but that could be very simple to fix (i suppose) just because, as i
said before, everything was just fine in hardy, gutsy, feisty, ecc.

with intrepid it happened for the first time and isn't going away...

I won't add the log to the comment because i suppose it could contain
sensible informations...

When Shutdown/Reboot after killing X computer doesn't show any
progressbar and hangs. The only way to shutdown is to power down the pc
with the hard key.

dist-upgrade after some other problems i found that no kde setting had
been saved. kde3 to kde4 migration should work without problem (as said
here: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/KDE3-KDE4Migration) but why kde4
to kde4 migration should be broken?

isn't it enough to do a  cp -R .kde4 .kde ?

the bug happend after the installation of openttd, today, one day after,
it eats way less CPU and I'm not sure if I can reproduce it again.

I wasn't able to provide the openttd -d 4 log because redirection
doesn't work and the output is too long to be entirely copied from the
terminal screen.

ps aux is useless because no other hungry process is running and openttd
CPU usage has significantly lowered from ~90% to ~10%.

yesterday it was ~90% both in the menu and the game

In the attached screenshot you could see that the sender name has no
capital letters, but I stored that contact with both name and surname
with capital letters.

this happened to me too, when I was using ext4 it was way more frequent.
Now that I'm using ext3, it happened again.
I removed all ibex.index files and folders.db in ~/.evolution/mail/local and 
the index was rebuilt and evolution now goes fine.
I made an evolution backup when my evolution was broken, maybe it could contain 
some useful infos about how to reproduce the bug. Tell me..

this way to treat bug makes me think that all of you don't really want
to improve software using user suggestions, if i'm wrong you would have
probably split this bug in pieces or opened others with the same content
to separate all the features...

this could be the way to address all the problem in the right way, not
complaining about "not 1 report-1 bug", if you (aka "the people that
keep on closing bug reports) don't want to do so, some users with a lot
of patience, will report those wishes again in a way that you'd be happy
with and a lot of time will pass. Well done!

the me menu to select your status is quite unuseful if most of the space is 
taken by status list all grayed out...
empathy should at least be launched to allow to choose your status via the me 
menu.

I tried the test:
on the first test it didn't go to suspend, on the second (unplugged AC) it 
suspended but didn't wake up.

Useful informations:
- When I suspend the machine, it doesn't wake up (resuming problem)
- It happend every time i tried this feature (100%)
- Never worked AFAIK
- No kernel panic
- actually Apport doesn't see the issue (9.10 updated to now)

i tried to suspend from VT1, it worked fine suspend and resume.

switching back to the X-server the computer hanged.

another thing i noticed: everytime i reboot my pc in my session i found
the volume set to MUTE

If I open the «Help» menu in evolution I see (translated options): «Send bug 
report» and «Report a bug».
The former refers to bug buddy (which is not in the default installation of 
ubuntu), the other opens apport (which is the default in ubuntu).

This leads to one non-working option and a bit of confusion in a new
user.

I'll attach a screenshot.

Anyway I think this would be a perfect paper-cut

When I receive an email with a .doc, .od*, .pdf attachment the button to
directly open it is grayed out and not clickable, to see them I have to
click on the right arrow and then choose «Open with *».

This is quite annoying and forces the user to a non standard
interaction. Everything works fine when the attachment is an image or
something else.
