Some changes to the deck format are not backwards compatible. If you create a deck on the latest version on Windows, you will not be able to read it with 0.9.5.7. You have it backwards. This bug is because the SQLAlchemy libraries were upgraded. The latest version of Anki does not have this problem, but unfortunately the Debian maintainer does not seem to be actively maintaining the package. This is somewhat irritating as people upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 keep posting on the Anki bugtracker that Anki is broken, when the issues are just that Debian/Ubuntu have out of date packages. I provide a .deb of the latest version of Anki on the Anki website, but I do not know enough about package authoring to ensure it complies with all the packaging rules.
