[Bug 146515] Re: fglrx - gutsy - ati: Black Screen with ATI RV535 [Radeon X1650 Series] [1002:71c7]

2008-11-04 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Thanks,

good constructive advice and thorough walkthrough, which I followed
perfectly - but still 'desktop effects could not be enabled'.

I followed pts [1-6], hurried to enable desktop effects after reboot,
upon which the Download and Install dialog re-appears, runs and the
notorious popup says 'desktop effects could not be enabled'.

Bug is alive and kicking, as far as I'm concerned.

I attach new Xorg.0.log, as per your #7

[Bug 146515] Re: fglrx - gutsy - ati: Black Screen with ATI RV535 [Radeon X1650 Series] [1002:71c7]

2008-11-02 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Hi again,

well - I have hoped and prayed that Intrepid would bring a solution to this bug
but alas: the driver activation just fails a bit more graceful - but still it
fails.
During reboot after upgrade, an error msg appeared, stating 'Unsure what to do'
regarding multible occurrences of flgrx [something]. But X started up
nonetheless and everything appeared to work as before the upgrade, i.e. ATI
driver doesn't work.
Then the 'Hardware Drivers' icon appeared and I go there to activate - and hit
the designated Activate button, which launches a 'Download and Install' dialog
box...which hangs and causes an application crash.

I reboot and this time no error on boot - and I do the Activate Hardware
Drivers thing... which apparently works: it downloads the driver and I'm
all excitement. I turn on the visual effects under appearence and
behold: It does not turn white on me, leaving me blindfolded - but it
turns back to 'No visual effects'.

Only thing changed afaik: Graceful fail!

I attach my Xorg.0.log.

[Bug 398045] [NEW] daap share fails in Rhythmbox

2009-07-10 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mt-daapd

I'm running a FreeNAS 0.7RC1 Sardaukar server at home. Just started with
the iTunes/DAAP service on this box, I'm annoyed that Rhythmbox sees the
daap share alright but no files get listed. It works fine in iTunes on
Win and Mac.

Currently, I've tested Rhythmbox 0.12.0-0ubuntu4 using Jaunty and
0.11.6-1 on 'Debian 5 for Asus Eee' on my eee900; it fails for both,
even thought all machines reside on the same subnet. So: It is not
strictly a Ubuntu problem - what is it then?

I did see the other bugs regarding daap but then again I didn't think
they match this particularly. Therefore I posted this as a new bug. Hope
it's OK...

[Bug 407959] [NEW] Probe for Intel 82852/82855 gfx card fails - introduced in Jaunty?

2009-08-02 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Public bug reported:

I've tested all versions of Ubuntu since Warty on my aging Acer
TravelMate 291 XC and never before Jaunty did I get this problem: The
Intel 82852/82855 gfx card is not recognized and xorg falls back to
'vesa'.

I can see that the gfx is working; the progress bar during boot shows
correct maximum resolution (1024x768). But entering the login screen and
from there on, we're in 800x600.

I've searched for fixes and found none that worked, so I edited conf manually,
adding 'intel' for Driver and
'
"Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Configured Video Device"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
DefaultDepth 16
SubSection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768"
EndSubSection
EndSection
'
which worked; it's just not optimal.

xserver-xorg-video-intel is version 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.3

[Bug 407959] Re: Probe for Intel 82852/82855 gfx card fails - introduced in Jaunty?

2009-08-06 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Hi again,

I tried the 9.10 Live-CD but didn't install. Resolution is OK and
System>Preferences>Display shows everything as normal: monitor is Laptop
at 1024x768 (4:3) 60hz.

It should perhaps be mentioned that I did fresh install last with Hoary
and online Distribution Upgrade from Hoary>Intrepid and again
Intrepid>Jaunty. Resolution was OK up to Intrepid but broke in Jaunty.

Would you still like me to fire 'apport-collect'? And in which version?

[Bug 214119] Re: [HARDY] Koolu W.E. (ION A603) does not detect higher resolution than 800x600

2008-05-03 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
This was a treasure to stumble upon :)

After much investigation, I tried David Bensimon's workaround from 21/4 and
finally managed to get my fit-PC
(http://www.fit-pc.com/new/specifications.html) to show a resolution greater
than 800x600 when running Hardy.
Unfortunately, I'm not able to test for greater than 1280x1024.

Thanks again.

[Bug 146515] Re: fglrx - gutsy - ati: Black Screen with ATI RV535 [Radeon X1650 Series] [1002:71c7]

2008-05-05 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Thanks Paganini. That was good constructive advice, only the card is 512 Mb and
max setting in my BIOS is 256mb.
Anyway, it did enhance the overall performance a bit but unfortunately it
didn't solve my main problem - it only puzzled me further!

After updating from 7.10 to 8.04, in my GRUB boot menu, I have two
entries for Ubuntu 8.04: kernel 2.6.22-14-generic and 2.6.22-16-generic.

And of those two, I'm only able to boot normally, sort of, into
2.6.22-14-generic and I can even enable the restricted ATI driver and
reboot into this same kernel, now without any black screen - but it
seems like the card isn't doing much good.

When I go for 'Appearance' to turn 'Extra' on under Visual Effects, the
screen turns all white! Fortunately, I'm able to guess what to do to go
back to the None setting.

What's going on.,..

2008-05-06 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
That's correct - enabling the restricted driver (aka 'fglrx') now works with
kernel 2.6.22-14 without the screen going black.
On enabling Desktop Effects, the screen goes white instantly.

Same old problem with black screen persists when using kernel 2.6.22-16.

I too experience exactly the same problem with my ATI Radeon x1650 on my fresh

black screen.

The only graphics setting that lets me see the Desktop is 'vesa'. See my

[Bug 433699] [NEW] Failed to set gfx for Geode on Jaunty (fresh install on Fit-PC 1)

2009-09-20 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Public bug reported:

This is related to my previous enthusiasm mentioned in bug 214119, in
which I found a workaround to make gfx (AMD Geode) for the Fit-PC 1
(fit-pc.com) work on Hardy.

This does not work with fresh install on Jaunty, which I performed twice
just the other day on the exact same unit as I did Hardy.

Boot halts, grey prompt saying
'
(EE)Geode(0): GPIO pins are in serial mode.
Assuming no DDC
'

Next grey prompt offers to 'Run Ubuntu in low graphics mode for one session
only' + a 'Review logs' and 'Edit configuration'.
I go with the first option: 'It appears that the screen number (x.x) is already
in use'
I can then get a 800x600 res.

Someone know a fix?

I have also run 'ubuntu-bug -p xserver-xorg-video-geode'

[Bug 474270] [NEW] Ubuntu Netbook Remix (9.10) fails to connect to Ubuntu One

2009-11-04 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

Having installed Karmic on several machines, they all failed to connect to
Ubuntu One at first, due to 'Compatibility mismatch', which then was easily
fixed with a apt-get upgrade. As of now, I have two successful installs, using
One and everything. However, on my Asus eee 901, it does appear to work, I get
no errors as such...but the icon keeps displaying 'Disconnected' and hitting
'Connect' shows some activity but after approx. 5-6 seconds, it goes back to
*Disconnected' mode.
I use the latest UNR.

[Bug 433699] Re: Failed to set gfx for Geode on Jaunty (fresh install on Fit-PC 1)

2010-08-20 Thread Dávur Eyðunsson
Yes - last attempt with Ubuntu 10.04 approx. 1 month ago, when I re-
installed one of my two Fit-PC1 units. After two attempts with Lucid, I
gave up and went for Debian 5, which is now running on both and playing
like a charm with 1280x1024. I really would have preferred Ubuntu as
this was meant to be my web development workstation for a while.

Install for Debian 5:
Base install
xserver core
gnome core
gdm
gnome-app-install
iceweasel
NoMachine Free Ed. Server
Apache/PHP5/MariaDB/MySQL Tools

Not much I can do now in terms of testing Ubuntu further for you,
unfortunately - I'm in the middle of a project.
