I don't want to use the open source driver because my video card has 2 coolers on it that start working like crazy if they are not controlled by a driver (and they're pretty noisy too). Nop, I don't have a Sony Vaio. I attached my lspci output. I'm pretty sure it's a kernel problem because I recompiled a Ubuntu Kernel (2.6.27) on Hardy and it had the same effect. Now I'm using Intrepid Ibex Beta and when the system boots up, at some point the display gets dimmed. I tough this kernel was missing ACPI, (I saw that there is a separate package for it) and I went and downloaded the source and compiled my own kernel from the ubuntu site (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/linux_2.6.27-2.3.tar.gz). I used standard Debian tools (make-kpkg and so on) to build the kernel. Same problem. No control over the brightness :( . I hope this can be fixed. I attached the config I used to build my kernel. I downloaded the kernel from hardy, booted up with it and still nothing :| Same thing. I'm think it has something to do with HAL or ACPI. With the LiveCD I can see the drive identified by /dev/sr0. It uses the sr_mod kernel module.
