[Bug 372268] [NEW] KPackageKit update caused immediate power down

had seen this before and not thought much of it. However as soon as
progress hit 100% my computer immediately cut power. Everything appears

[Bug 256188] Re: [intrepid] high cpu usage after boot

2008-11-06 Thread colin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 113184 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/113184

I was able to get the CPU usage to go down by killing the gnome-
settings-daemon as well.

After some investigation I found continuous wabcom errors in the xorg
log file.

I commented out all of the wabcom entries in the xorg.conf file,
restarted GDM and the problem went away. Make sure you look for wabcom
entries in section "ServerLayout" in addition to "InputDevice" sections.

[Bug 217789] Re: Realtek ALC888 low sound

2008-12-19 Thread Colin
I have an HP Pavilion with the ECS MCP61PM-HM board (HP/Compaq name:
Nettle3-GL8E)

I tried adding "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack-hp" to
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

This made the unknown HDA error in dmesg go away, and the volume
controls which were previously set to 100% across the board were reset
to somewhere in the 60% region. When I crank them back up to 100%, I
believe it may have increased the volume somewhat from where it was
previously, but its still nowhere near the volume you would expect (and
that I was able to get on the PC I just replaced.) For the record,
these are powered (by 110v) speakers.

I experimented with "options snd-hda-intel model=6-stack-dig" since this
system does have 6 jacks on the back, 2 in the front (but no unused
digital out that I can see). The dmesg error is still gone, but the
volume seems identical. One side effect though, is that the volume
slider in xmms no longer actually adjusts the volume.

For what its worth, this is not limited to Ubuntu - the same behavior
occurs in Fedora Core 10, so I'm thinking that this is related to Alsa
perhaps as your post would suggest.

I will experiment with some of the others and see if I do any better.
Thanks a ton for the pointers!!!

[Bug 217789] Re: Realtek ALC888 low sound

2008-12-20 Thread Colin
After intense amounts of experimentation (and googling) I found a post
which suggested that this was related to pulseaudio (and that their
removal of it fixed a similar problem.) Since half my system depends on
pulseaudio, its not easily removable but I see that others simply killed
it and removed the reference to it from /etc/asound.conf

Turns out I didn't do either, but rather just used "alsamixer -c 0" and
two of the sliders were set real low (despite the Pulseaudio volume
control being maxed on every channel. I cranked those up, and all of a
sudden my speakers have life :)

Yes, I'm a bit red-faced, but maybe this will help somebody else with a
simple fix. I don't remember seeing those channels in the console-based
alsamixer before, so its possible that Peter's fix enabled me to see
those?

Thanks to all!

[Bug 372268] Re: KPackageKit update caused immediate power down

2009-08-20 Thread Colin
I suspect that in order to reproduce this bug I'd have to revert not
only my system's configuration back before I encountered the problem but
also any repositories that it was connecting to. Particularly, kpackage
kit back to the one I was using on my computer and whichever version I
was trying to install back up to the repositories.

Since the power cut I don't know how reliable the end of the log file
is. I'm guessing it had a lot more trouble trying to install kpackagekit
that simply didn't get written out before the power cut. Prehaps it was
this deadlock that caused it? If you know a way to artificially recreate
such a situation then you may be able to find out if that was what
caused it.

[Bug 407480] [NEW] Amarok stops playing flac files 3 seconds early

2009-07-31 Thread Colin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: amarok

Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04
amarok 2:2.0.2mysql5.1.30-0ubuntu3

I expected Amarok to play the song to the end. Instead it stopped 3
seconds early.

The problem mostly seems to be with flac files. Other files seem to play
fine.

Amarok also seems to have trouble adjusting its progress through flac
files and sometimes even reading them at all.

[Bug 70842] Re: MP3s or OGGs won't play in xine-based apps after upgrade from Dapper to Edgy

2006-11-11 Thread Colin
I don't think it's a problem with the MP3 - that MP3 played fine in xine
before the upgrade to Edgy.

I have several thousand MP3s created with a variety of different
encoders on a variety of different computers - they all played fine in
Dapper, and now none play in Edgy.

I've attached a xine bug report for a different MP3.

[Bug 25106] Re: evolution-exchange: unable to setup exchange account

2008-04-26 Thread Colin
Just hit the same problem with the 8.04 LTS using 2.22.1 release of
Evolution. It manifests in exactly the same way: you can't get by the
authentication step in the account set up when specifying
domain\username. I have this account setup and working in Outlook on
another machine and it works fine (so, I know the OWA address and
username/password I'm using are all correct.) Can I help gather info? If
so, please give me explicit instructions how. (I'm still relatively new
to the environment.)

I have not been able to get a backtrace because I don't think that

[Bug 91816] Re: volume and mixer applets crash on login

2007-03-14 Thread colin
I initially thought it was crashing but realized after filing the bug
report that it was having problems loading. By trying to run the
application from the command line per your instruction I discovered that
the gnome applets package was no longer installed. I tried to apt-get
install it but it failed due to a dependency problem. After updating
the system with the latest packages today I was able install the gnome-
applets package.

I am new to gnome (I have been a long time kde user) so I was unaware of
the names of the applet binaries.

Thanks again for your help!

[Bug 461903] Re: boot passphrase entry for subsequent crypto disks interrupted

2009-11-10 Thread Colin
I am also having trouble with this. Before I can enter all the
passphrases it finishes booting. There doesn't seem to be any way around
it either.

It seems to constantly try and finish booting and only comes back to the
passphrase prompt when it fails. It's repeated failed attempts to boot
actually slow the process down significantly.

I am using a fresh Kubuntu 9.10 alternate 64bit install with manually
repaired grub since there seems to be something wrong with the alternate
installer.

2010-03-26 Thread Colin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

causing no changes.

[Bug 1736965] [NEW] "netplan apply" does not set file mode, umask 077 causes systemd-networkd to be unable to start

2017-12-07 Thread Colin
Public bug reported:

If you set your UMASK in /etc/login.defs to 077 then after running "netplan
apply" systemd-networkd won't be able to read its configuration files and start:
systemd-networkd[2826]: Could not load configuration files: Permission denied

Annoyingly to report such a thing as bug you need a proper network
connection with working DNS before you submit in ubuntu-bug or it will
just quit and lose the report. A workaround seems to be to run "ubuntu-
bug nplan" then in another terminal run "umask 022" then "netplan apply"
before submitting.

[Bug 1736975] [NEW] netplan does not bring up anonymous bridge on boot

2017-12-07 Thread Colin
Public bug reported:

Configuring "/etc/netplan/01-netcfg.yaml" with an anonymous bridge seems
to require running "ip link set dev br0 up" to bring the bridge up after
boot. A bridge configured with an IP address is automatically up after
boot.

This is only a problem if you want an anonymous bridge which comes up
automatically after boot. For example, if you preferred to isolate host
traffic from your autostarting virtual machine traffic.

Configuration that results in the bridge being down after boot:
network:
  version: 2
  renderer: networkd
  ethernets:
enp22s2:
  dhcp4: yes
enp22s3:
  dhcp4: no
  bridges:

Enabling DHCP results in a bridge that is automatically up after boot:

[Bug 1223594] [NEW] Audio CD Issues in Kubuntu-Desktop

2013-09-10 Thread Colin
Public bug reported:

It seems that many Kubuntu-Desktop programs have problems with Audio
CDs, especially K3b. Audio CDs in Ubuntu-Desktop programs seem to work
perfectally until a Kubuntu-Desktop program is run, especially K3b.

I should note that I'm using an external optical drive: RDED-12001. If I
open K3b or change folders in Dolphin too fast then the drive stops
responding. I can't even eject. This doesn't seem to be an issue with
"Files" or Rhythmbox unless KDE already has the drive locked up. I seem
to be able to get some responsiveness with a replug but I don't think
the drive itself is the issue.

I'm also using a custom kernel 3.10.10 to get audio working over HDMI on
Haswell. I think I complied from this commit:
https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-
stable.git/commit/?id=8bf3379a74bc9132751bfa685bad2da318fd59d7. I copied
the ubuntu kernel config and used the defaults for anything new when
compiling.

[Bug 1223594] Re: Audio CD Issues in Kubuntu-Desktop

2013-09-10 Thread Colin
I just tested this out in the latest stock kernel 3.8.0-30-generic and
it's still an issue. Inserting, ejecting and playing audio CDs work
great in Ubuntu-Desktop programs while Kubuntu-Desktop programs struggle
with them so much that they often cause the drive to become completely
unresponsive, especially K3b.

kdemultimedia-kio-plugins.

2015-09-11 Thread Colin
Adam Lee - you are a legend mate! Used the 1.1 patch from 244. Had to
use a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.04 with the 3.19.0-28 kernel. My 14.04
installation just would not work, no matter which kernel I tried.
Machine is an Alienware-15 laptop. Last up is fixing the sound. Thanks
again, major kudos!!

[Bug 1336801] Re: 12.04 guest hangs on a 14.04 host server with cirrus graphics

2014-10-03 Thread Colin
I'm also having issues with libvirt/kvm guests becoming unresponsive and
they were all using cirrus as their video model. I've tried switching
some to vga to see if that helps.
